The story centers around Senator Krull, a conservative senator from South Carolina, and his family when they move to New York. The Senator's daughter, Emma Kroll, becomes engaged to a young man, Joe Gresham, whom he finds unsuitable and of ill repute. Emma soon finds herself in a tricky situation involving Joe's past entanglements. This Is New York was later adapted into a movie, Two Kinds of Women (1932). Robert E. Sherwood (1896-1955). Sherwood had a prolific and successful career. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1936, 1939, and 1941; the Academy Award for Best Screenplay (1947); and the Pulitzer Prize for Biography (1948)..
