"Born in Ermsleben, Sombart acquired a reputation through his work Der Morderne Kapitalismus (1902) in which he traced the development of capitalism fromt he later Middle Ages." This work aroused considerable controversy because Sombart wrote that the Jews were the principal cause of the disruption of the medieval economic system and its replacement by capitalism. The Jews, he said, undermined the guilds and promoted international trade which lead to capitalism. Sombart's work was later cited as a primary influence on Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda because "he stressed the incompatibility of Jewish commercialism with the spirit of the 'nordic farmer'" and in his 1934 work Deutscher Sozialismus he favored Nazi policies that excluded Jews from economic and cultural life (EJ) .
