Ralph Steadman's 'Between the Eyes' is a view of the world by a sheep in wolf's clothing. In deciding to squeeze the results of twenty-seven years of work into a single book at least one of Steadman's aims was to stop people asking him how such angst-filled drawings could emerge from such a kind and gentle soul as himself.Steadman doesn't go out of his way to shock. He is genuinely wounded each time a world event rears its ugly head.Just as man first used simple lines on cave walls to exorcise his fears before the hunt,Steadman uses lines and blots to condemn injustices, expose hypocrisy and exorcise his own fears about what humanity would do to itself unchecked. He is also touched by the simplicity of life, which is what makes this a book of such startling, eloquent contrasts - from the savagery of his Save the Children drawings and Falklands commentaries to the sublime images of Alice,Freud and Leonardo.
'Between the Eyes' is neither chronological nor strictly autobiographical. It is a kaleidoscope of what struck this artist's eye.You will travel with Alice and Richard Nixon down their own rabbit holes. You will find cartoons by 'Stead' from the Daily Sketch, scandals of the 1960's from Private Eye and a head-on collision with the screaming lifestyle of America. Here is Steadman's own version of fear and loathing with Hunter S. Thompson (as Thompson and Tom Wolfe have had theirs); here are violence, religion and police; Thatcher,Reagan and Zeno the sheep; flying visits to four corners of the earth, philosophical gardening notes and riding dolphins in mid-ocean.
'Between the Eyes' will make you laugh. It may make you gasp, lose sleep, change your politics or turn over a page or two in horror. But the genius of Ralph Steadman - the warmth, cynicism, vision of three decades - will not fail to hit you (like the man says) right between the eyes.
