Letter handwritten in ink on 4 3/4" x 7 3/4" paper. Dated November 17, 1873 and written in New York. One page. Edmund Clarence Stedman (1833-1908) was an American poet, editor, and businessman. In this letter to fellow poet Henry Alexander Lavely (1831-1920), Stedman thanks Lavely for sending him a poem that Lavely had written. Stedman also talks about not having time to write because of his work as a stockbroker: "... the constant and vulgar demand for cash makes it impossible for me to compose at all, except for hours stolen from sleep and rest.".
