UK,thick 8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn.VG-. Owner's handwritten, inked name to ffe. Publisher's original red cloth boards with shelf-wear,rubbing to edges and bumped corners,a dulled spine with dulled but still discernible, gilt letters to same. Both boards with sun bleaching to tops (approx 1.1/2" wide horizontal band) and towards the gutter's edges (approx 1/2" vertical strip) due to proximity of smaller sized books being stored either side of the book, along with other sporadic, minor blemishes, spots.Front board with blind-tooled double-line border at edges, rear board plain and undecorated. Plain white endpapers clean - owner name excepted to front - with rear hinge cracked and some minimal spotting to rear pastedown.Head+foot of spine with inevitable and usual but minimal bumping with reciprocal creasing and miniscule splits and fraying and minimal loss,if any at all.Top+fore-edges lightly aged/toned but clean without any trace of foxing/ spotting - particularly,if not exceptionally, clean for book of its age. Contents bright, generally tight and firmly bound but lightly strained in a couple of signatures, clean with no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread - apart from my own collation. The only corner creases result from the bumped corners of boards, particularly both lower corners to a minor degree.UK,thick 8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn, vii-xivpp+17-349pp [paginated] includes acknowledgements,a preface, separate contents+illustrations lists/tables,Pts I-V (1-5) comprising 8,2,3,4 and 8 chapters respectively, appendices (2,one with b/w facsimile reproduction of script used in Yazidi Holy Books),68 contemporary monochrome photographs (majority taken by author herself, others lent by Sir Arnold Wilson,Messrs Victor and others) - all called for and present, though pp288 is partially attached but still in situ, and an index.Plus [unpaginated] half-title with offset foxing shadow from front free endpaper,b/w photographic frntis, title page with minimal, faint sporadic foxing/ spotting, similarly affected dedication page, individual Pts+Index separator pages and to the rear of book,2pp blanks with both recto+verso with foxing.
Described in detail, but honestly and fairly. An uncommon, almost scarce - only ONE other example noted listing - title from amongst her travelogue works. As such, a collectable example in her erudite style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon of her Middle Eastern cultural anthropology.
Several of the chapters have appeared in either part or whole as articles in the; Near East','Outward Bound',Baghdad Times' and 'Times of Mesopotamia'.
