Stewart, Jo Ann : The Three Musketeers: A Compilation Of Letters

8vo. No place, 54pp, red cloth with gilt lettering at cover, extremities worn, top corners bumped a bit, fore edges untrimmed, minor water staining noted at bottom outer corner of front and rear pastedowns, otherwise a fresh, bright copy inside and out. The author, Jo Ann Stewart, along with two friends, Moreen and Barbie (one of whose surnames was Gullander, the other Laird), left San Francisco by plane for New York, then on to Montreal by Greyhound bus, and ultimately away to Europe on the Cunard Line R. M. S. Saxonia, from which the author posted her first letter home, June 29, 1957. The final letter was dated August 20, 1957, from on board the S. S Venus, and the Epilogue notes the author spent 2 nights on ship before landing in Newcastle, Scotland, then took a train to Edinburgh, from where she caught a flight to New York City and met family friends Marge and Len Mooney who helped her catch the plane to San Francisco. From the Foreword by the author's father Don Stewart, "Because of the pleasure and enlightment [sic] relatives, friends and ourselves received reading Jo Ann's letters from her European tour, we decided to put them in narrative form as a permanent remembrance of her trip. Hence, this little book was designed and printed." Additional names include Commodore P. D. H. Stewart, who was apparently Captain of the S. S. Venus, the ship Arosa Star which was initially supposed to be the ship that would take the travelers across the Atlantic, the author's pet Jim-Jim, or Jimmie back home, who was apparently a wire-haired French Poodle, Elaine, Marilyn, Nick Nicole, Carolyn, Ruth, and the Gelett family, tour leader Mrs. Mendenhall in Belgium, Puddles the San Francisco Zoo's hippopotamus, Edie, Lillian, and Dr. Flood, who was foot-noted as Jo Ann's and Peter's pediatrician. Identifying details include the mention that the author had to return post haste to New Haven, Connecticut, where she was to enter Yale University on September 2, 1957. The author also noted her brother, Peter Stewart, and Bob, who might be another brother. A rare volume, with Worldcat locating zero copies.. Book. Book Condition: VG. Binding: Hardcover
