Presently (then 2004) at the peak of her career after her towering performance in 'Kill Bill', Uma Thurman is an intriguing figure: the beautiful muse of Quentin Taratino whose struggle with body dysmorphic disorder has at times rendered her crippled with insecurity. The daughter of Robert Thurman, the celebrated professor of Buddhism, and Nena Schlebrugge,a model and psychotherapist,Uma enjoyed a bohemian upbringing in Boston. After leaving boarding school at fifteen to pursue an acting career in New York, she soon found herself washing dishes and modelling instead. Before long,Uma gained recognition as a promising young actress playing the vulnerable ingenue seduced by John Malkovich in 1988's 'Dangerous Liaisons',followed by another successful outing in 'Henry & June' in 1990. Later the same year, she was swept off her feet by gifted British actor Gary Oldman, but their marriage was short-lived,dissolving in 1991 amid rumours of his excessive drinking. In the early 1990s,Uma's dedication to trying her hand at all genres didn't always pay off at the box office and her career stalled for a while.Fortunately, she accepted a part as a reckless gangster's moll in Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction',which fast became one of the most talked-about films of the decade and garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She met her second husband,Ethan Hawke,on the set of the science-fiction movie 'Gattica' in 1996 and the couple were maried in May 1998, having a daughter,Maya, two months later. But Uma's career again went into decline: her next projects,'Batman And Robin','The Avengers' and 'Les Miserables',were all box-office flops. Woody Allen's 'Sweet And Lowdown',followed by two lavish period dramas,Merchant Ivory's 'The Golden Bowl' and Roland Joffe's 'Vatel',helped restore Uma's status, and she received a Golden Globe for her performance in 'Hysterical Blindness' in 2003. Back at her best after the birth of her second child,a son called Roan,in 2002,Uma gave a mesmerising performance as the wronged bride on a rampage of revenge in Quentin Tarantino's eagerly awaited comeback 'Kill Bill',released in October 2003; the part was created expressly for Uma and it earned her another Golden Globe nomination. However, amid rumours that the close relationship between Tarantino and his muse had dveloped ino something deeper,Ethan Hawke embarked on an affair with a female co-star; the couple's struggle to save their marriage appears to have faltered. This biography, the first to be published, tells the whole story of Una Thurman's extraordinary life: the ups and downs of her acting career; her two troubled marriages to fellow actors; her role as devoted mother; and her triumphant return to form in 'Kill Bill Volumes 1' and '2'.
