[viii], 187 pp. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth binding, with front board and spine stamped in black. It shows general wear all over (some scuffing and spotting, etc.) and is faded on spine. The opening and closing text leaves are foxed just along their fore-edges; otherwise the text is clean. The bookblock is overopened in a few places and is weak at those points, but is still soundly in its cloth binding. Early ownership marks and a small bookseller's label (Lauriat's of Boston, MA) on ffep. Edmund Gill Swain (1861 - 1938) was an author and a chaplain of King's College, Cambridge, and a colleague and contemporary of the scholar and author M. R. James, and a regular member of the select group to whom James delivered his famous annual Christmas Eve reading of a ghost story composed specially for the occasion. This collection of nine ghost stories is Swain's most famous and is dedicated James.
