On Sunday,13th April,1919,during a rebellion in the Punjab,Brigadier-General Dyer marched ninety Indian and Gurkha troops into an enclosed space known as the Jallianwala Bagh,in Amritsar, where a mass meeting was taking place.
He opened fire without warning, killing 379 men and children, wounding 1,500 others. The rebellion collapsed; within ten days the whole Punjab returned to peace and order.
At first,Dyer was praised as 'the saviour of the Punjab',but as the political agitation grew, a Committee of Enquiry was set up,which eventually condemned him.By the summer of 1920 the issue had become a storm in which the British Government found itself fighting for its life.Politicians, soldiers, indeed the whole
country was split on the Amritsar issue, half upholding Dyer as a soldier who had carried out his duty with great courage, others denouncing him as the perpetrator of an atrocity. The argument engendered so much heat that it seemed impossible to conduct it on any clear basis; moral, legal, humanitarian, military, and political considerations were hopelessly mixed and misunderstood.Dyer was disgraced without ever being tried.
Arthur Swinson, who served in wartime India, has investigated the whole story. With the co-operation of the Dyer family,he has traced and interviewed many people who knew the general, including officers who were serving under him at the time. From these and other sources he has uncovered many important facts which have enabled him to tell the story against a comprehensive historical background,to present this definitive account of the most explosive incident in the history of the British Empire.
