268 pages (complete). In a review of this progressive, trusting book The Spectator wrote that perhaps Toynbee was hoping for, searching for a new picture of Britain at the beginning of the 1960s. Toynbee found the selection he had to make to be severe and painful. In the end he chose a wide-spectrum of 'Underdogs' at the time from the miner who in his fifties regretted leaving school at thirteen to a young criminal, from the about to be incarcerated homosexual to the orphan. Toynbee, rebellious and searching as ever, compiled a book that still resonates and fascinates as a novel by Patrick Hamilton. This copy is in general good condition.
