Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is a German Engineer student handwritten notebook, written probably between the years of 1912 and 1928. The front board has a paper label which reads: “Technische Staatslehranstalten Hamburg. Johannes Kreibel Nachf., Buchhandlung, Hamburg, Steindamm 3.” The school was founded in 1893 and in 1912 its name was hanged to the ‘Technische Staatslehranstalten zu Hamburg.’ It’s name changed again in 1928 and it is now a department of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. The book contains a large number of different topics in mechanical engineering. Some of the topic headings are: “Festigkeitslehre” (Strength of Materials), “Biegungspannungen” (Bending Stresses), “Scherfestigkeit” (Shear Strength), “Umfangsgeschwindigkeit” (Circumferential Speed), “Drab Seiltriebe” (Drab Cabled Actuators), “Theorie der Dampfmaschine” (Theory of the Steam Engine) and many more. Included with the notes about the various topics are dozens and dozens of hand drawn diagrams, charts, figures, and equations that add an attractive visual element to the pages. The information contained in the book is obviously of quite an advanced level and is befitting of the “Technische Staatlehranstalt” (Technical State Institute) name. There are two loosely inserted technical drawings at the front of the volume and a drawing inside the front board. One of the drawings appears to be a motor vehicle. The book measures 12 1/2” x 8” inches. It is hardcover with a tan cloth spine on blue cloth boards. The spine cover is soiled and frayed with rust stains from the binding staples. The rear board is missing the cloth covering in the upper corner and the edges of both cov3rs are well worn. The text block is loose from the binding with the first page almost wholly detached. The pages themselves show some age-toning and occasional foxing. The contents inside are mostly in good to very condition. The handwriting throughout is legible and easily readable once the reader gets a hang of the author’s script style. The black ink has faded in many parts of the book, but this does not affect the legibility of the German. The book contains 64 pages of notes and drawings all dealing with the science and theory of mechanical engineering. OVERALL: VG. Manuscript.
