Original tax stamp on beige paper. 8" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with eleven triangular punched holes showing it has been used or invalidated. Paper is very clean and intact. A few minuscule wrinkles. Almost imperceptible pinhole in lower-right corner. A Fine copy. Most of text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in red is the number of the tax stamp, the year "1876," and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). The stamp has fill-in sections but there is no handwriting. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for April 1877." and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "5 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
