Original tax stamp on beige paper. 7 3/4" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with three triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact. Subtle horizontal fold line at center. A couple wrinkles at the top and lower-right corner. Minuscule closed tear in the top margin. A Fine copy. Most of text and illustrations are printed in black ink including the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). "USIR" watermark. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in red is the stamp number. The stamp has fill-in sections. Only one line has handwriting, the signature of the tax collector. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufactured Tobacco Special Tax for April 1886." Printed text at the bottom: "$2.40 Per Year." and "Bureau, Engraving & Printing." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
