Original tax stamp on beige paper. The only date on this stamp is 1874, but the publication year may be 1873. 7 3/4" x 7." This stamp is a perfin with four triangular punched holes showing it has been used or invalidated. One of the punched holes is on the left edge. Paper is very clean and intact. Horizontal fold line and subtle wear. Most of text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a women with an eagle behind her, posed by common taxable items, including a box of cigars, a barrel of tobacco, and a bottle of Scotch. Printed in blue is the stamp number. Printed in red is the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). The stamp has fill-in sections but no handwriting. Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: "Coupon for Dealers in Manufacturers of Cigars Special Tax for April 1884." Printed text at the bottom: "10 Dollars Per Year." and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
