Original tax stamp on green paper. 8" x 7 1/4." This stamp is a perfin with twelve triangular punched holes showing it has been used. Paper is very clean and intact. Horizontal fold line at center. Slight discoloration on the bottom and left edges (mostly on back). Small closed tear from part of a punched hole at the left edge. Most of the text and illustrations are printed in black ink. In the center at the top is an illustration of a Mercury holding a caduceus, seating around a variety of kegs, barrels, and vessels containing alcoholic drinks. Printed in red is the stamp number. Printed in blue is the year "1876" and the seal of the United States Internal Revenue (IRS). The stamp has fill-in sections. There are three lines of handwriting including the signature of the tax collector, the district number, and "Ohio." Printed text includes the following at the top: "Stamp for Special Tax; United States Internal Revenue." Printed text on the side: part of "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for March 1876. [cut in half laterally]," "Coupon for Retail Liquor Dealers Special Tax for April 1876.," and "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing." Printed text at the bottom: "25 Dollars Per Year." There is a notice of penalties being imposed for not displaying this stamp in the applicable place of business. Tax, or revenue, stamps are special stamps that confirm a tax has been paid on certain items. Punched holes prevented stamps from being used more than once.. Ephemera.
