Walter James Turner was born in Melbourne in 1884 and moved to England when he was twenty-three to pursue a career as a writer. He befriended Siegfried Sassoon, Virginia Woolf, Vita Sackville-West and Lady Ottoline Morrell (a caricature of her in his book 'The Aesthetes' ended that friendship).
