The ultimate blonde bombshell,Lana Turner's life is the stuff of legend - and
scandal.Born Julia Turner in February 1920
in Idaho, she was a teenager at high school in Hollywood when she was 'discovered' drinking a Coke at the Top Hat Cafe on Sunset Blvd,by Billy Wilkerson, publisher of the Hollywood Reporter, who felt sure he had the right connections to get this pretty girl noticed in tinsel town. After working as an extra on one film,A Star is Born, Julia became Lana and shot to fame as 'The Sweater Girl' in the appropriately named movie They Won't Forget. . . . And they certainly never did.
Her films - over fifty in all and including such classics as Ziegfeld Girl, The Postman Always Rings Twice,The Merry Widow and Peyton Place - took second billing to her dramatic private life, including seven marriages and romances with a number of Hollywood legends, including Clark Gable,Howard Hughes and Tyrone Power. But the real scandal of her life came on 4 April 1958,when her only daughter,Cheryl Crane, stabbed Lana's mobster lover Johnny Stompanato to death in a killing that was later ruled 'justifiable homicide'. Lana Turner was undoubtedly a product of the Golden Era of films and more particularly of Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer and its head,Louis B.Meyer.
He moulded her character, made her one of his creations - one of his best and one of
his last.In this in-depth portrait Jane Ellen Wayne tells the real story of the last truly great screen goddess,a legend who has come to be known as the last reigning queen of film's Golden Era.
