Weiss was born in Moravia in 1815, and began studying at a yeshiva at the age of eight. He had great interest in both religious and secular studies, and repeatedly changed schools in search of one that could sate all his intellectual interests. Dor Dor ye-Dorshav, a five volume work, is a history of Jewish oral law from Biblical times to the fifteenth century, when the Jews were expelled from Spain. While most Talmud scholars immediately adopted the work as their standard history, there was some “malcontents, ” in particular Isaac Halevy and Eleazer Zarkes.
