West, Francis: : A View of the East India House, Leadenhall Street

Copper engraving, 42.5 x 28 cms, , from ‘A Collection of Views of old London and its environs’.

West was a Fleet Street optician, also active as a printseller c. 1830-50. He acquired a number of copper plates of London views - mostly engraved in the mid eighteenth-century by John Bowles - probably after the sale of the trade stock of Bowles’ successor Robert Wilkinson, in 1825. This view was originally published by Bowles & Carver, circa 1802. East India House was rebuilt by the architect Richard Jupp in 1799-1800 and demolished in the late 1920s. It was headquarters to the East India Company which still governed much of India at the time this print was published; it was of course overtaken by the events of 1857-1858., Adams 193/14
