Wrap-around colour pictorial artwork illustrated dw/dj with ubiquitous white scratches/abrasions to dw/dj where protective top gloss has been rubbed, with b/w+blue lettering to front and a slightly sunned/faded spine/backstrip with author's redlettered name faded but along with other letters still legible. With shelf-wear,rubbing and minimal creasing to edges and corners - all corner tips rubbed with some minimal chipping and losses to same and minimal chipping to head with small loss, lettering unaffected, miniscule chipping at foot of spine/backstrip affecting publisher's name with similar minimal loss - but overall, still approx. 99% present.Internally to dw/dj, water-stain to top edge of front, inner flap, the front top edge, the spine/ backstrip and also to the rear, top edges and top edge of rear, inner flap.Water-stains also visible externally to front inner flap's vertical fold/crease and along top edge of rear inner flap too. From the presence of internal water-stains to dw/dj - results in concomitant speckling/ mottling/blemishes to sharp-cornered, publisher's original, black cloth boards/ covers with publisher facsimile signature/ device to front, lower leading corner and lettering to spine/backstrip: generally bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettering with some partial, but very minimal, dulling. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears, splits or fraying present, plain white eps - some minimal foxing/spotting to verso+recto of rear free endpaper - but both hinges solid and sound with no splits, tears or cracking.Top edges very lightly toned and without foxing/spotting,fore-edges bright and clean with minimal, faint sporadic foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight - text body virtually foxing-free - some sporadic foxing to first few pages' margins - but no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,5-291pp [paginated] includes novel spanning from Monday,4th May 4th to Monday,3rd July,1945 in daily/weekly form, plus [unpaginated] sporadically foxed/ spotted half-title,title page with dedication to reverse.
Described hard but fairly and honestly. Considering the faults, discolouration and other imperfections commensurate with book's age, this is still an opportunity to acquire what the author himself believes to be his most frightening novel/work,and a classic of the genre. It is also a very uncommon 1st edn title with it's dw/dj.
