Nathaniel Parker (N. P.) Willis (1806-1867) was an American author, poet, and editor. After college, Willis began working for the New York Mirror and made his own publication, Town & Country, in 1846. Willis became the highest-paid magazine writer in his time and also worked with notable literary figures such as Edgar Allen Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Of these "fun-jottings," the Preface notes, "They record, under more or less of disguise, turns of event or of character, which have amused him. In re-compiling his past writings into volumes, these lighter ones have been laid aside, and they are not trusted to take their chance by themselves, appealing to whatever indulgence may be in store, in the reader's mind, for a working-pen at play."
