Vice-President Johnson, the South's most famous Unionist, had retired on the night of April 14, 1865. Later he was roused by pounding at his door; a messenger blurted out the news - President Abraham Lincoln had been shot at Ford's Theater. The next morning Johnson became the 17th President of the United States. He was a staunch defender of the Union, but he also could not simply dismiss the credo of states' rights that every Democrat since Andrew Jackson had embraced. He found himself at odds with the Republican-dominated Congress. Author Robert W. Winston's book is a thought-provoking look at a President who has not fared well in the judgement of history. However, the author believes Johnson was a man of deep convictions who sincerely believed the Constitution was being subverted by Congressional demagogues. Johnson did not get a fair deal, that his life, though angular and old-fashioned, was honest and a real contribution, it must be remembered he had a rough job. This is must reading; a wonderful, historical biography. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991.
