ZERVOS, Christian (Edited by), and Other Authors : Fernand Leger

Editions Cahiers D'art, Paris, 1933

A fine copy in contempoary beige coarse linen, paper title label to front board. INSCRIBED by LEGER on the Man Ray portrait to Rex Martienssen: "A Mr. Martienssenen souvenir desu visite a mon atelier 3.3.38 cordialement F. Leger". Rex Martienssen (1905-1942), pioneer South African architect, is credited with having brought the International Style developed by Le Corbusier, to South Africa. Deeply influence by both Le Corbusier and the mechanistic art of Fernand Leger, his two prime influences, Martienssen and his new wife Heather went to Europe in 1938. The highlight of that visit was Martienssen's first encounter with Leger, arranged by Le Corbusier. This meeting is well chronicled by Gilbert HERBERT "Rex Martienssen and the International Style" (Balkema 1974), pp.191-193. Inscribed by Leger on the occasion of that significant encounter, this important association copy documents one of the pivotal occasions in the development of South African architecture, and constitutes a unique link between this important international art movement and its spread outside Europe to the African subcontinent.
