Printed Legal Brief. "The State of California vs. Fred Bose." (Lewd and Lascivious Conduct with a Child Under the Age of Fourteen.) Petition for a Hearing of the Case in the Supreme Court. Sacramento, 1915.

Imprint: Sacramento, CA, 1915
Binding: Softback

Original publisher's gray wrapper. December 1915. 7" x 10." Thirty-four pages, complete. A clean copy. The petition, jointly submitted by the state and the attorney for Fred Bose, describes Bose's conviction of child molestation in a Sacramento County court, his sentence to ten years in a Folsom prison, and his request for a new trial denied by the Third District Court of Appeals. The petition asks for a new trial before the Supreme Court. The alleged incident for which Bose ("an older man") was convicted took place on a park bench outside of an amusement park in Oak Park, Sacramento in the summer of 1914. The incident involved a twelve-year-old girl. Some testimony and summary of the testimony from the original trial are included. Both the state and Bose's attorney, R. P. Talbot, argue for a new trial because they believe the young girl's accusations are "improbable," that the jury acted out of "passion and prejudice," and that both judges and the prosecuting attorney were guilty of incompetence and misconduct.. Printed Legal Brief. "The State of California vs. Thomas L. Knight." (Lewd and Lascicious Acts Committed upon a Child Under the Age of Fourteen Years.) Respondent's Brief. San Francisco, 1923.

Imprint: Sacramento, CA, 1923
Binding: Softback

Original publisher's gray wrapper. March 1923. 7" x 10." Sixteen pages, complete. A clean copy. This brief filed by the State Attorney General in the District Court of Appeal describes Thomas L. Knight's conviction for child molestation in San Francisco Superior Court and argues against his appeal. Knight, age 57, had been convicted of molesting a nine-year-old neighborhood girl in his basement on 20th Street in San Francisco. This molestation is briefly described. Knight's appeal is that during his first trial, the testimony of two other girls, who also claimed to have been molested, prejudiced the jury against him. He felt these testimonies should not have been allowed because they implied a disposition on his part towards such behavior. The state, citing legal precedents, argues that the testimony of the two other girls established Knight's intent to molest and the preconceived design of his action. The state also argues there is enough additional evidence against Knight that even without the testimony of the two other girls, the jury would have convicted him anyway.. Book. Real Photo Post Card: "Meany Hall - U-W Campus - 1117 -"

Original black and white photo postcard. No date, circa 1930s. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Postcard is unused. Postcard is very clean and intact overall. Slight wear and a couple bumps at the edges. A Near Fine copy. This postcard shows the original Meany Hall on the University of Washington (UW) campus. Meany Hall, or Auditorium Hall as it was known then, was built in 1909 for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition by Howard & Galloway. After the exposition, Meany Hall was used as an auditorium for student assemblies and music, dance, and theater performances. Auditorium Hall eventually took on the name of Meany Hall when Professor Edmond S. Meany, head of the UW History Department, made significant contributions to the university, namely, helping with the organization of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at UW and the construction of many of the campus's buildings. In 1958, Meany Hall underwent renovations but was damaged in 1965 from the Puget Sound earthquake. The building was subsequently deemed unsafe, so it was demolished. The new vacancy factored into a restructuring plan of the area, which is now an open plaza called Red Square. In 1974, a new Meany Hall was constructed in another location and followed a more contemporary style matching the Odegaard Undergraduate Library instead of the original's Victorian-era, Neoclassical style. In 1995, UW's Allen Center for the Visual Arts was constructed in the spot formerly occupied by the original Meany Hall.. Postcard. Book Condition: Collectible-Near Fine (Near Fine). Real Photo Post Card: "The New Alki Beach Bathing and Recreation Pavilion, Seattle"

Postcard is unused. Postcard is very clean and intact overall. A few faint smudges on the image and on the back. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows the new Alki Beach Park on Alki Beach, Seattle. Alki Beach was already a popular tourist destination by 1902, and in 1907, an amusement park called Luna Park had been built there. In 1911, the city of Seattle opened another amusement park, Alki Beach Park, which was built alongside Luna Park and its famous swimming pools, the Natatorium. The Pavilion was innovative in that it featured luxury locker rooms, a cafe, gym, clubrooms, and a viewing balcony. It is presumably from this balcony that crowds of people are depicted in the postcard. Crowds are also shown on the first floor and in the water below. The following is printed on the back: "The Pacific Northwest Photographic Series; Post Card; Seattle, U.S.A., Robert A Reid, Publisher, 488 Arcade; 55. Real Photo Post Card: "Perkins Hotel, Portland, Ore."

Imprint: Portland, OR, Knight Drug Company, 1908

Original black and white photo postcard. Postmarked August 8, 1908 in Portland, Oregon. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Postcard is used. The author writes, "Dear Verna: I'm here today. The x is where my room is situated." To the side of the hotel building, a small "x" marks the room where the author is staying. The Perkins Hotel was built by Richard S. Perkins (1831-1902), an English-American businessman, in 1891 at the corner of Washington Street and Southwest Fifth Street in Portland. The hotel had 125 rooms, a restaurant and bar, and modern amenities such as electric lighting, bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and steam heat. One distinct ornamental feature of the hotel was a gilded cedar statue of a longhorn steer located in an alcove at the top of the hotel's corner tower. The steer symbolized Perkins's longtime career as a cattle drover from which he gained much of his prosperity and wealth. Unfortunately, the financial panic of 1893-1894 led to Perkins selling the hotel in 1896 or 1897 to C. W. Knowles or Charles McIlrath. The hotel regained success by the early 1900s and was a popular meeting place for wealthy socialites. After changing several hands, the hotel building was leased by A. Everett Meyers in 1924. The statue of the steer was removed in 1957, and the building was demolished in 1962 after not meeting safety building codes and standards. However, the hotel's famous statue was preserved and is currently owned by the Oregon Historical Society. From the angle at which the hotel is shown on the postcard, the statue can be seen in its niche on the tower.. Postcard. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
