Original black and white photo postcard. No date, circa 1939-1940s. 3 1/2" x 5 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Imprint of "Zan M 8" in the lower-right corner of the image. Postcard is unused. Postcard is virtually pristine and intact. A Fine copy. This postcard shows a man standing on a wall ladder with his hands at his sides, who, in a seemingly inexplicable fashion, leans outward toward the center of the room without falling. The Mystery Spot was founded by George Prather in 1939 and is a tourist attraction that relies on optical illusions. The attraction features a house in which the rules of physics and gravity do not seem to apply. In the house, visitors can witness "gravity-defying" experiences such as people leaning forward without falling and round objects on the floor rolling upward. The illusion is produced by the house being tilted at a twenty-degree angle as well as the house being located on a gravity hill, which is an optical illusion in which a downhill slope that appears to go visually upward. The Mystery Spot was very popular in the mid-twentieth century and was the first tourist attraction in California to feature optical illusions with a "gravity" component.. Postcard. Domenico "Domingo" Ghirardelli, Sr. (1817-1894) was a chocolatier who founded the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company at what is now Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco, California. Ghirardelli founded his famous chocolate company in 1852 but moved to Hornitos as a business venture during the California Gold Rush. In 1855, Ghirardelli opened his general store in Hornitos. The general store was frequented by the local miners in need of supplies. After three years of successful operation, Ghirardelli closed the general store in 1858 to focus more attention on the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company in San Francisco.. Postcard. Newton Booth School is named after the businessman and politician, Newton Booth (1825-1892). Booth served as the 11th governor of California and as a United States Senator from California. Newton Booth School was a private school that opened during the 1920s. The school closed in the 1970s due to the lack of earthquake retrofitting. However, the building underwent renovations in 1984 and housed a consulting office until 2007. The building became vacant again and another private school, Merryhill School Midtown, stepped in to make further renovations to the building. This postcard shows a close-up action shot of what may be a horse in a field at center with people on horseback surrounding it. Dust is shown being kicked up in the air. This scene took place in Hanford, California and may possibly either be showing people breaking a horse or training their horses for a show. There is handwriting on the back in pencil. This postcard shows the throne room of 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawai'i. In 1844, Mataio Kekuanao'a began to build a house for his daughter, Princess Victoria Kamamalu on what would become the royal estate of 'Iolani Palace. Kekuanao'a called the building Hale Ali'i. However, after King Kamehameha III moved the capital of Hawai'i from Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845, he purchased the estate and used the building as his royal residence. It became 'Iolani Palace during the reign of King Kamehameha V. The palace was used as the royal residence until the annexation of Hawai'i in 1893. The last monarch to use 'Iolani Palace was Queen Lili'uokalani, the last and only queen of Hawai'i. King Kalakaua was her brother and the last king of Hawai'i who had named her as his successor. After Queen Lili'uokalani's reign, 'Iolani Palace was turned over to the Provisional Government of Hawai'i, which used the palace as the capitol building. The palace continued to be used as the capitol by the governments that followed, namely, the Republic, Territory, and State of Hawai'i, until 1969. This postcard shows the front of the Library of Hawai'i in Honolulu with trees flanking either side. This library was the first public library in Hawai'i. Its predecessor was the Honolulu Library and Reading Room Association (HLRRA) which had been formed in 1879 as a subscription library. Notably, King Kalakaua, Queen Kapi'olani, Queen Emma, and Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop gave both financial support and their personal book collections to the HLRRA. In 1909, the HLRRA signed an agreement with the trustees of the Library of Hawai'i to give their books and resources to them. Construction for the Library of Hawai'i began in 1911 and it opened in 1913. Since then, the library has undergone several expansions, renovations, and restorations and is remains open to this day.. The Singua were a pre-Columbian culture thought to be the ancestors of many Indigenous tribes in the Southwest today. "Montezuma Castle" is a bit of a misnomer as it was given this name by settlers who thought the dwellings were constructed by the Aztecs (hence, "Montezuma") and that they formed a castle. The construction of the Singua cliff dwellings is estimated to have begun during the 12th century, and it is likely that new dwellings were added over different generations.
