Postcard is virtually pristine and intact except for slight corner wear. A Fine copy. This postcard shows the Bowers Mansion, an ornate two-story mansion with an American flag draped from the rooftop balcony. The mansion was originally built on land that would become Washoe City, Nevada. The mansion was commissioned by Alison "Eilley" Oram Bowers (1826-1903) and her husband, Lemuel "Sandy" Bowers (1833-1868). The couple had become millionaires after cashing in on the Comstock Lode. The mansion was designed by J. Neely Johnson (1825-1872), an architect and the 4th Governor of California. Unfortunately, Eilley's life from about the 1860s onward was filled with personal tragedy when Sandy and their three children passed away. Compounding her hardships was the end of the Comstock Lode mining boom. In an effort to pay off her debts, Eilley added a third floor to the mansion and rented out rooms. She also became a professional fortune-teller who went by the name of the "Washoe Seeress." However, her efforts were in vain and she remained financially destitute for the rest of her life. Today, Eilley is one of the most famous nineteenth-century female pioneers and her life has been the subject of much research by historians. The Bowers Mansion also stands to this day and is open to the public after having been restored to its original state.. Postcard. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding

In addition to serving as Mayor of Traverse City, Foster was the first to bring movies with sound to Northern Michigan. He also established Clinch Park on the Bayfront after the Hannah Lay Lumber Mill closed. Foster envisioned a local history museum in this park that would showcase his collection. During the 1930s, Foster had traveled around the United States collecting thousands of Indigenous and American pioneer artifacts, and the Con Foster Museum opened in 1934 under the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The museum closed in 1999, but the Con Foster collection was transferred to the History Center of Traverse City. After the History Center closed, the collection was then given to the Crooked Art Tree Center. Much of Foster's collection are Indigenous artifacts, so there is an ongoing effort to repatriate them to the tribes who own them. After sitting unused for many years, the Con Foster Museum building reopened as a movie theater, Bijou by the Bay, in 2013 with the help of Michael Moore, the founder and president of the Traverse City Film Festival, Richard and Diana Milock, and hundreds of community members and other individuals..
