Original black and white photo postcard. Postmarked March 26, 1941 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title is printed at the bottom of the image. There is a green, one-cent Statue of Liberty stamp tipped in on the back. The stamp reads, "Industry-Agriculture; For Defense." Postcard is used. Postcard is very clean and intact except for some corner and edge wear and a few marks on the image. The discoloration may have come from the postcard being previously mounted. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows the Mooney Apartments in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. An "x" in black ink on one of the apartments may show where the writer of the postcard stayed. There is also handwriting in black ink on the back. Mabel (?) writes to Mae and Harold Gray in Piedmont, California about getting away "from snow and cold for a while - it lasted too long. This postcard shows a scenic view of the Ozarks, possibly in Missouri. The postcard was sent from Missouri and is addressed to someone in Little Rock, Arkansas. The correspondence begins with, "Dear Edward, This is by far the most beautiful place I have ever seen." After talking a bit more about the scene, the writer mentions recent events, namely, that they are doing "O.K." except for a "sore foot [?] caused by trimming a corn [?]." This postcard shows a spring festival outside the original Oneonta Normal School in Oneonta, New York. Normal schools are colleges that train students to be teachers. People are seated or standing on a lawn in front of the school's building called the "Old Main." Cars are parked out in the back. The Old Main was the school's only building until 1933 when the Bugbee School, a training facility, was built. The Oneonta Normal School was founded in 1889 and became one of the first colleges to become a State University of New York in 1948. Today, the Oneonta Normal School is known as the State University of New York at Oneonta, or SUNY Oneonta, which is now a liberal arts college. There is handwriting on the back in blue ink. The anonymous author of the correspondence writes to Mr. E. R. Proctor in New York City, "Dear Elliott: Just saw Mr. Geo. I. Wilber of the Wilber Bank, & said he had been in your place to lunch & saw you.--he is the biggest man in Oneonta." George I. It appears that this is the childhood house of the writer, which was owned by their mother. The style of stamp box on the back with "39-1" and "Printed in Great Britain" is similar to that of a Valentine & Sons stamp box used from 1928-1951. Postcard is unused. Postcard is virtually pristine and intact except for a few light marks on the back. A Fine copy. This postcard shows Kimberley Park in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. The park first opened to the public during the nineteenth century when the Earl of Kimberley leased it to the Borough of Falmouth. Kimberley Park is still open to this day. Valentine & Sons was founded in 1825 as a lithographic company by John Valentine in Dundee, Scotland. John's son, James Valentine (1815-1879), joined as a business partner just five years later. James eventually took over the business and restructured the company in 1851. Valentine & Sons became a leading manufacturer of postcards in both Scotland and abroad when it ventured into the industry during the 1890s. After James's passing, the company was run by his two sons, William Dobson Valentine (1844-1907) and George Valentine (1852-1890). The company continued to operate until 1963 when it was sold to John Waddington, Limited. John Waddington then sold the business to Hallmark Cards in 1980. This postcard shows a view of one the camps at Codford, England during World War I. The Codford camps were initially built for British troops but they eventually accommodated troops from New Zealand and Australia. The "Grosvenor" series of postcards was published by W. H. Smith & Son. The company had its beginnings in 1796 as a newspaper vendor on Little Grosvenor Street, London and was founded by Henry Walton Smith (1738-1792) and his wife, Anna. Their son, William Henry Smith, took over the business after their passing. The company became W. H. Smith & Son when William's own son, William Henry Smith, Jr., joined as a business partner. Over the years, W. H. Smith & Son remained a newspaper and bookselling retailer but also expanded into other retail sectors such as stationery, magazines, and even confectionery. The Coulee Dam is a concrete gravity dam situated on the Columbia River in Washington. It is near the Grand Coulee, an ancient riverbed. Initial plans considered a low dam, supplying only hydroelectric power, but the final decision resulted in a high dam supplying both hydroelectric power and irrigation. The Coulee Dam was one of many projects that were part of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, the Public Works Administration (PWA), and the Work Progress Administration (WPA). Construction of the dam began in 1933 and finished in 1942. The dam's reservoir is called Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake (or Lake Roosevelt).. Postcard. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. This postcard shows the dirt road of the Gunflint Trail in Cook County, Minnesota. The Gunflint Trail began as a footpath and was turned into a dirt road during the 1890s to accommodate traffic from the Paulson Mine. Further road development was made during the 1920s and the portion between Grand Marais and Hungry Jack Lake was paved in 1957. The remaining gravel portion of the trail south of Sea Gull Lake was eventually paved in 1979. Today, the Gunflint Trail is a National Scenic Byway and goes by other names such as Country Road (CR) 12 and County State-Aid Highway 12. Postcard is very clean and intact except for slight corner and edge wear, a few small wrinkles, and age toning on back. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows what appears to be a family portrait in front of a house. There is handwriting in red-brown ink that fills the entire back. The writer addresses their friend and talks about the house in the photo as well as the surrounding foliage. They write about their roses; how they have red, white, and yellow roses; and that the rose bush behind the people in the photo is as tall as the house. To the left of the group is a palm tree. A green, one-cent George Washington stamp is tipped in on the back. Postcard is used but has an inscription in black ink on the back. Postcard is very clean and intact overall but has surface cracking on the front and a few small marks and stains on the front and back. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows a man standing outside of a house with a tree in the front yard. "Loyd & Edna Crose [?] home" is written faintly on the front in the margin. Edna (perhaps the same individual named on the front) addresses Mrs. G. N. Wayland, or Lois, in Huntsville, Missouri.
