Postcard is very clean and intact except for slight corner and edge wear and some discoloration on the back. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows a portrait of a young child standing on a sidewalk. A wagon or carriage is visible in the background along with other people. "Mandel's" stamp box on the back. This stamp box was printed exclusively in 1911. The following text doubles as the borders of the stamp box, "Mandel's Produces Positives, No Negatives." Mandel's refers to the Mandel Photo Postcard Machine or Mandel-ette that was produced by the Chicago Ferrotype Company from about 1911-1930. The Mandel Photo Postcard Machine, like other brands at the time, developed and printed instant photographs within minutes. These photos could then be used as photo postcards, like the one here. This photo postcard is also an example of a ferrotype (tintype). Ferrotypes came from one of the earlier photographic processes and remained popular until about the 1950s, in part because they could be developed quickly. This postcard shows the USS Cavalier in Hong Kong. The USS Cavalier was a Bayfield-class attack transport in the United States Navy. The ship was named after Cavalier County, North Dakota and was launched on March 15, 1943. The ship saw action during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The USS Cavalier was decommissioned in 1968. The depicted scene may be from one of the ship's two tours of duty to China from 1946-1947 and in 1948. The USS Cavalier also visited Hong Kong in 1951.. The USS Montague was an Andromeda-class attack cargo ship and saw action during World War II. The ship was eventually decommissioned in 1955 and was sold for scrap in 1971.. Postcard. C." printed on back. Postcard is used but was never formally sent with postage. Postcard is very clean and intact except for slight discoloration on the image. A Very Good copy. This postcard shows the SS Princess Alice with a scenic landscape in the background. The SS Princess Alice was a passenger cruise ship that was built in 1911 by the shipbuilding company, Swan Hunter. It was part of the Canada Pacific Railway (CPR)'s "Princess fleet," which were passenger ships with "Princess" in their title. The Princess Alice was eventually sold to Typaldos Lines in 1949 after which it was named the SS Aegaeon. The ship went out of service in 1966 after it was wrecked in tow in Civitavecchia. There is handwriting on back in blue ink. The writer talks about leaving Victoria, B.C. on September 26 at 4:30 p.m. and arriving at Seattle, Washington at 9:50 p.m. They also write briefly about how the sun is "shining brightly." Gowen & Stevens was a photography studio founded in 1916 by Frank Gowen and Sidney Stevens of Vancouver, B.C. From 1919-1920, the studio operated as the Frank Gowen Company. Alfred Sutton had been a shareholder and business partner in the Frank Gowen Company and continued to do so when the studio was renamed the Gowen Sutton Company in 1920. In 1930, Gowen sold his shares to Sutton. The Gowen Sutton Company kept its name after Gowen left, and the studio remained in business until 1987.. Postcard. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. This postcard shows a schooner, the Teddy Bear, as it travels through sea ice in Alaska. A man is visible at the crow's nest on the ship. The Teddy Bear was owned by Captain Joseph F. Bernard (1878-1972), a Canadian explorer, fisherman, and shipbuilder. Bernard lived a storied and adventurous life. When he was twenty years old, Bernard began traveling between Prince Edward Island, where he was born, and Alaska to work as a trader. Over the years, Bernard collected a number of Inuit artifacts which he gave or loaned to several museums. The Teddy Bear is notable for apparently being the smallest ship to travel in Arctic waters at the time. Documentation notes the final resting place of the Teddy Bear to be in Alaska.. Postcard. The Taft Museum was originally a residence built in 1820 for Martin Baum and is done in the Federal style. Nicholas Longworth was the house's next owner. The residence's affiliation with the Taft family began when David Sinton, father of Anna Sinton Taft, purchased the property. Anna married Charles Phelps Taft, the half-brother of President William Howard Taft. Anna and Charles lived there from 1873 until their respective passings in 1931 and 1929. This postcard shows President Dwight D. Eisenhower placing a wreath at the base of a Lincoln statue in Hodgenville, Kentucky. There are two statues of Abraham Lincoln in Hodgenville, Kentucky. The one pictured in the photograph was commissioned in 1904 by the Kentucky General Assembly to celebrate the centennial of Lincoln's birth. The statue was made by sculptor Adolph Alexander Weiman. The statue was officially dedicated on May 31, 1909. Notably, Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and Lincoln's sister-in-law, Emilie (Emilie) Todd Helm, attended the ceremony, and Helm also unveiled the statue. The origin of Springwood is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have been built around the year 1800 as a farmhouse done in the Federal style. Subsequent owners made renovations so the residence followed the Italianate style. Roosevelt's father, James Roosevelt, later purchased the property in 1866. Roosevelt was born in 1882, and for the rest of his life, he and other members of the Roosevelt family found their home at Springwood. Springwood became a National Historic Site in 1945.. Postcard. Montana's Virginia City was founded as a boomtown upon the discovery of gold in 1863. This prompted a local gold rush and the town became the new capital of Montana Territory in 1865. However, the prosperity of Virginia City was relatively short-lived. In 1875, the territorial capital was moved to Helena where more gold had been found. Virginia City became somewhat a ghost town, but during the 1940s, efforts were made to preserve the town for historical purposes and to draw tourists. Hendred House is the manor house of Arches Manor. Hendred House was first owned by the Turbervilles, who were part of the Dorset family, from the mid-twelfth century to the early fourteenth century. The property was then passed down to the Arches family in the mid-fourteenth century. Through marriage, Hendred House became the property of the Eystons in the mid-fifteenth century who have since owned the property to this day. The Eyston family has the distinction of being the oldest family in the area (Hendred House was originally in Berkshire but is now in Oxfordshire) to have stayed in a single residence.. Postcard.
