Dimensions 11 x 7 inches. Black ink, three vignettes: 1 - two women with a shield - center top, 2 - a bridge over a river - left bottom, 3 - a Grecian looking woman sitting by a river - right bottom, with decorative border. "Shares $50 Each" printed along top border. No. 11221, canceled, originally issued to Gordon Monges & Co. on March 5, 1886. Signed by the President, "Chas. Lafferty", and the Treasurer, whose name is obscured by several cancellation punch holes. The next day, March 6, 1886, Mr. Monges transferred the certificate to George T. Lewis. Gordon Monges was a stock broker, one of the partners in Brice, Monges and Company. Left edge has some discoloration, possibly from moisture. Top edge also darkened. Triangular cut from bottom edge. The Hestonville, Mantua & Fairmount Passenger Rail Road Company, AKA the "Arch Street Railway", provided street car service in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1859 to 1895, when it was acquired by the Union Traction Company.. The Michigan Central Railroad Company eventually included lines through Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario, Canada. After 1867, it was controlled by the New York Central.. Book. The New York, Providence and Boston Railroad, AKA "The Stonington Line" was chartered in 1832 and opened in 1837. It enabled people to travel from New York City to Boston without navigating through the rough waters of Point Judith, Rhode Island. Instead, people could take a steamboat over Long Island Sound to Stonington, Connecticut, and take this railroad to Providence, Rhode Island, and transfer to the Boston and Providence Railroad. The New York, Providence and Boston was acquired by the J. P. Morgan's New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1893. It is now part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor.. Book. Multiple punch holes, including some arranged to say "Canceled 5-14-17", purple cancellation stamp. This certificate was originally issued to Benjamin C. Creelman on November 15, 1898, and transferred to Anna Creelman Swan on May 5, 1917, upon Benjamin's decease. Pullman's Palace Car Company was founded by George Pullman in 1862 to build sleeping cars for trains. The company was embroiled in the famous "Pullman Strike" in 1894. After Pullman's death in 1897, Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of President Abraham Lincoln, took over as Company president. Embossed stamp dated 1876. Fold lines. No. 616, originally issued to Charles Burleigh on August 16, 1876. Signed by the Treasurer "Laurence G_____" and the President "Solomon H. Howe". Mr. Burleigh transferred the stock to the Worcester North Savings Institution as collateral for a loan on September 7, 1876. The Boston, Clinton, Fitchburg and New Bedford Railroad was formed in 1876 from the merger of the Boston, Clinton, and Fitchburg Railroad with the New Bedford Railroad. In 1879, it was leased to the Old Colony Railroad, which absorbed it outright in 1883. Solomon Howe was a successful mill owner in Boxford, Massachusetts. Charles Burleigh (1824-1883) was a business man and machinist in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and one of the first directors of this railroad. In 1865, he invented the Burleigh Rock Drill and Patent Air Compressor for use on the Hoosac Tunnel in Western Massachusetts. He established the Burleigh Rock Drill Company in 1867. Both of these signatures have strike lines through them. The Old Colony Railroad was a major railroad system in southeastern Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island. No. 2712, this certificate was originally issued to F. A. Bradley on September 6, 1887. Signed by the President, "W. Birch Dumau" and the Secretary, "___ Walsh". The Mobile & Ohio Railroad was first chartered in 1848 to provide railroad service from Mobile, Alabama, to the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois. It reached Columbus, Kentucky, on the Mississippi River in 1861. It was appropriated for military use during the Civil War and was almost completely destroyed and went into receivership. It emerged in 1883, after having built the extension to Cairo, and acquired the St. Louis and Cairo Railroad, so now it had a line all the way from Mobile to St. Louis. The railroad ran into trouble during the Great Depression, and was eventually merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad to form the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad in 1940.. Book. The New York and New England Railroad was chartered by a special act of the Massachusetts Legislature on April 17, 1873, to reorganize the bankrupt Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad. It ran from 1873 to 1895 and provided transportation from New York to Hartford, Connecticut, Providence, Rhode Island and Boston, Massachusetts. Dimensions 11 x 7 1/2 inches. Black ink, vignette of woman sitting next to picture of Independence Hall with a Militia man sitting next to a picture of a ship and an angle bearing a trumpet between them, top center, and a vignette of two horses pulling a street car past an imposing building, bottom center. 14 punch holes and a diamond shaped cut out. Fold lines, embossed stamp, left edge cut unevenly. Hole punch canceled stamp dated January 18, 1913. This certificate was originally issued to Martha Thomas on April 4, 1884. Signatures obscured by punch holes. The Frankford & Southwark Philadelphia City Railroad was chartered in 1858 by Act of Assembly to take over the Philadelphia and Delaware Railroad. It was the first real passenger street railway in Philadelphia, serving the citizens of the city. In 1863, it began using steam-driven engines, called "dummies" because the route was too long for horses. It was also known as the 5th and 6th Street Lines.. Book. Its first editor was James Russell Lowell. The magazine is still published to this day as the Atlantic. This is the March 1862 (Vol. IX, No. III) issue of the Atlantic Monthly.
