Leaflet is virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and slight wear along spine where it was formerly bound. A Fine copy. This is a two-page leaflet about public lands in California. The leaflet consists of propositions submitted to United States Congress by the convention assembled to form the California Constitution. There are six propositions listed. The first proposition allocates one section of land in every quarter township of the public lands be used for schools. The next proposition sets aide seventy-two sections of unappropriated lands for universities. The third proposition allocates four sections of land to be used in establishing the seat of government. The fourth proposition sells 500,000 acres of unappropriated public lands, in addition to 500,000 acres granted to new states by an 1841 act by Congress, "for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the State government and other State purposes; and five per cent. of the nett [sic] proceeds of the sale of all lands lying withing the State ... after deducting all expenses incident to the same, shall also be appropriated for the encouragement of learning." The fifth proposition establishes that at least one section of salt springs or lands reserved for the use of such springs be "used or disposed of as the legislature may direct." The last proposition establishes the duties and responsibilities of the first senators and representatives of California Congress to make or assent to future propositions and related articles of compact within the state and between California and the U.S. government.. There is a dampstain measuring 1" x 5" mostly limited to margins near spine, light to moderate foxing on back, a few small bumps and chips along edges and corners, a few wrinkles, and light age toning. A Good copy. This is a brief Congressional leaflet that lists six propositions that will be submitted by the convention assembled to form the California Constitution to United States Congress. The propositions dictate the use of California public lands. The first proposition grants "one section of land in every quarter township of the public lands" for the use of public schools. The second proposition sets aside "seventy-two sections of the unappropriated lands lying within this state" for the use and support of universities. The third proposition allocates "four sections of land ... from any of the unappropriated lands belonging to the United States within [California]" for the "use in establishing a seat of government, or to defray the expenses of public buildings at the same." The fourth proposition designates that 500,000 acres of unappropriated public lands and an additional 500,000 acres granted to California from an 1841 act of Congress will be used for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the "State government and other State purposes" and that 5% of the net proceeds of the sale of all California lands will be appropriated for the "encouragement of learning." The fifth proposition states that all salt springs and at least one section of the associated lands shall be used as the state legislature directs. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Five pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact overall except for light age toning and occasional foxing. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. This is a memorial advocating for an increase in salary for the district judge of the Northern District of California, Judge Ogden Hoffman. The members represented in the memorial make a plea to raise Hoffman's salary noting his ability, experience, "professional knowledge," and good character. They also express concern about expenses associated with Hoffman's profession and the general cost of living in California. The memorial is very brief and printed on the first two pages. The remaining three pages list the names of the memorialists, comprising members of the bar and California citizens, who are making their plea for Hoffman. Ogden Hoffman (1822-1891) served from 1851-1891 as the United States district judge for the Northern District of California (1851-1866 and 1886-1891), Southern District of California (1852-1854), and District of California (1866-1886). Hoffman was nominated to a new seat for district judge for the Northern District of California on February 1, 1851 by President Millard Fillmore. By operation of law, Hoffman was later assigned on August 31, 1852 to a seat as district judge for the Southern District of California, reassigned on July 27, 1866 to the District of California, and reassigned again on August 5, 1886 to the Northern District of California. Hoffman served as a district judge until his passing on August 1, 1891. Hoffman was succeeded by Judge William W. Morrow.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding

Margarita Agreneva Slaviansky (1880/81-1964) was a Russian vocalist and choral conductor and daughter of Prince Dimitri (or Dmitry) Alexandrovitch Agreneff. Prince Dimitri received the honorary name of "Slaviansky" after he drafted vocalists and visited Slavic villages to learn about Slavic culture and music for the Royal Choir under the orders of the Czar of Russia. Prince Dimitri founded the Slaviansky Russian Chorus in 1858. Princess Margarita inherited her father's business and legacy after his passing in 1908.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Some specific places of interest or organization are named such as Neptune Beach, Sunny Cover, the Aeolian Yacht Club, Alameda Bank, and Alameda Sanitarium. One leaf folded in half and printed on all sides. Brochure is very clean and intact. A few minuscule wrinkles and a small, very faint smudge on the last page. A Fine copy. This is an announcement advertising the limited fourth edition of Merle Johnson's American First Editions, which was edited by Jacob Blanck. The first two pages of the brochure give some background on the book. Excerpts from the first two pages: "'American First Editions,' first issued in 1929 to become the daily guide of collectors, booksellers and students of literary history, has now been given most thorough and painstaking revision--a monument to American bibliography. Nearly 200 authors from Philip Freneau to John Steinbeck are included and every one of the 10,000 titles have in the revision been rechecked, hundreds of new items added, disputed claims studied, missing details supplied. ... Vol. I, No.3 issue of Back to the Farm, a newspaper dedicated to farming and agriculture. Contains a variety of articles, most of which are relatively brief (about one to a few paragraphs) and appear to double as promotional material encouraging settlement and farming in Sacramento Valley. The front-page articles are about the Sacramento Valley. One of the articles on the front page describes the many farms available in the Sacramento Valley at a cheap cost. This article includes an anecdote by a new resident, Mrs. R. Thompson, originally from Chicago, who praises the residents of Willows in Glenn County ("cordial, and although everybody is busy, ... they do not rush around as in Chicago") and general environment and infrastructure of Willows. Another front-page article features a man, W. F. Burt, who won prize money for having the "best developed farm in the valley," and says that he supports himself and his family comfortably. Also noted on front are the Sacramento Valley's plentiful almond and sugar beet crops and "healthful climate." The following are some of the subjects addressed on the two inside pages: Colusa oranges, hog-raising, raising poultry and cultivating fruit on one farm, alfalfa, and peach cultivation. Begun in 1867 by Connecticut entrepreneur David Lyman, the New Haven, Middletown and Willimantic Railroad Company began service from New Haven to Middletown in 1870, built a drawbridge across the Connecticut River at Middletown, and reached Willimatic in 1873. Unfortunately, the construction was much more expensive than anticipated. The company was unable to pay the interest on their bonds, went into bankruptcy, and was taken over by the Boston and New York Air Line Railroad in 1875.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Transferred to Kuyvet W. Sears of Nahant, Massachusetts, on November 9, 1889. The Old Colony Steamboat Company was chartered in 1874 and provided steamboat service from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, to New York City. It was controlled by the Old Colony Railroad, but was sold to the New England Navigation Company in 1905.
