The Grand Canyon: Native People and Early Visitors
Imprint: Charleston, South Carolina, Arcadia Publishers, 2000
Edition: First Edition
2000-2004. First Edition, paperback formats. SET OF TWO BOOKS: The Grand Canyon: Native People and Early Visitors (2000), 160 pages; and Visiting the Grand Canyon: Views of Early Tourism (2004), 128 pages, both published by Arcadia. Both in Fine, New condition. Free of stickers, bookplates, writing in text, and page tears. Free of smelly damp stains and the smell of smoke from a smoker. Not library books. Books in gift-giving condition. The two books offer vintage images of the human drama of survival and coexistence in the canyon, from the native tribes who struggled with life on the rim, to the pioneers who came to foster and manipulate the early tourist industry. Between the 1890s and the 1920s, horses, mules, river rafts, stagecoaches, and later railroads and automobiles permitted increasing access to the area. Here is a wonderful selection of photographs that helps present the development of the Arizona landmark from the Forest Reserve in 1893 to full national status in 1919. Here too are photos of popular tourist spots like the El Tovar Hotel and the Navajo Bridge, as well as early conservationist faces of U.S. Presidents. Historical, collectible. Two books to enjoy. The Grapes of Wrath was first published in the spring of 1939 by John Steinbeck, when America was still all too intimately involved with the Great Depression. The migration of a family from the Oklahoma Dust Bowl to California is magnificently presented to the reader, describing the family's subsequent exploitation by a ruthless system of agricultural economics. A Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award were granted to Steinbeck for this work. A classic. Franklin Library (a division of Franklin Mint), published collectible books of high quality materials. Since the publisher ceased operations in 2000, all editions are considered out-of-print, many uncommon and highly collectible. Binding:
Hardback
[June 1947] Paperback, 91 pages. Condition of binding: Creases, old stains, age toning, piece missing from top left corner (same with top of spine, several pages). Stamp of Child Welfare League of America on half-title page. Edges toned, as expected. Internally: Pages are clear and readable. Free of bookplates and stickers, writing, underlines and page tears. Not a former library book. Overall, Good (Very Good internally). This book is a step back in time, a wonderful read on what experts believed about children, teens, and juveniles in the late 1940s (included are crazy ideas, naïve beliefs, and unsound thinking - but this is what many experts believed in the 1940s). The goal of the guidebook was to give housemothers and housefathers in children's institutions guidelines and insights. It deals with the many problems and challenges encountered in raising other people's children. It includes practical suggestions (remember this was the 1940s!) and gives the reader new insights into the why and how of relationships. Every teacher, counselor, psychologist, therapist, and child specialist should read this booklet - see how far we've come since the 1940s. Fascinating.
