One of the largest battle cruisers ever built by the United States Navy, the Memphis (originally U.S.S. Tennessee in 1904),was utterly wrecked in one of the worst catastrophes ever recorded in naval history. Now,in the swift, vivid prose which distinguished his best-selling book 'Run Silent,Run Deep',Captain Beach tells the full story of the Memphis,of the man (his father) who commanded her,and of the court-martial which shattered a brilliant naval career. On 29 August 1916,the Memphis was anchored off the shoals of Santo Domingo harbour in roughly 50 feet of water.Soon after 3.00 p.m. the ship began to roll, and a short time later a huge wave appeared to the southeast - a wave which raced towards the harbour at 40 miles an hour and which grew until its tops were 80 to 100 feet above the normal level. What happened then - the desperate attempts to raise steam, the violent destruction of the cruiser, the 200 men injured, the 43 killed - is told in objective,minute-by-minute detail by an author who has lived with the tragedy all his life.Captain Beach writes: 'The survivors - their numbers now greatly depleted - meet once a year on the anniversary of the disaster, and it is from them,as well as from Father's old papers and official Navy documents, that I have been able to reconstruct the story of that day.' Edward L. Beach was born in New York in 1918 and entered the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis at the age of 17.During WW2 he served in submarines in the Central Pacific, commanding the U.S.S. Piper in 1945. From 1953-57 he was Naval Aide to the President of the United States, after which he was given command of the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Triton which he took on the first submerged circumnavigation of the world in 1960.Until his retirement from active service at the end of 1966 he was working at the Pentagon. He is also the author of 'Submarine!',the already mentioned 'Run Silent,Run Deep',which was made into a Hollywood film, and of 'Around the World Submerged',the story of U.S.S. Triton's voyage. Please contact seller, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B. From shortly after D-Day on 6 June 1944 up until the end of the war in Europe on 8 May 1945,the men and Churchill tanks of the 9th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment saw plenty of combat. After crossing the English Channel in the ferocious storm of 18-20 June 1944,the 9th formed up for their first action in support of the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division in Operation 'Epsom'. More battles swiftly followed in which the battalion repelled the weight of several German armoured divisions. They fought alongside the Canadians on the way to Falaise, helped the 49th Division to force crossings of five rivers on the way to the Seine, and fought again alongside the 49th in the capture of Le Havre. Moving up to Holland, the 9th helped to enlarge the Arnhem salient in September and then spent several days in heavy fighting which ended with the capture of Roosendaal by the Allies. Advancing into Germany at the end of 1944,they were suddenly called upon to help repulse the German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. Successful in their task, the 9th returned in February to spend weeks fighting their way through the Reichswald Forest on the borders of Germany, then across the Rhine and finally into the Fatherland itself before the war ended in May. 'Tank Tracks' makes extensive use of the (the Battalion's War Diary, interwoven with letters, personal recollections and the author's own narrative. It describes the formation of a heavy tank battalion in the UK in 1940,its exhaustive training for operations, and then its subsequent deployment for action in North West Europe following D-Day in 1944. Complemented by more than forty rare photographs and a selection of specially drawn maps,'Tank Tracks' graphically reveals to the reader just what it was like to live and fight as a member of a British heavy tank battalion during the Second World War. The author himself,is name checked in his and the book's narrative. He served with the battalion from early 1943 to July 1945 as a troop leader in a sabre squadron. He was wounded twice during the North West Europe campaign. The extraordinary and untold story of Britain's child migrants is one of shaming exploitation.Around 130,000 children, some just 3 or 4 years old, were shipped off to distant parts of the Empire, the last as recently as 1967. For Britain it was a cheap way of emptying children's homes and populating the colonies with 'good British stock'; for the colonies it was a source of cheap labour. The so-called philanthropists and chid 'care' agencies which set up migration schemes in the last century built up the dream of a new life in new lands. But in practice, life for the 90,000 children exported to Canada from the 1860s to the 1920s was often one of unremitting harship, working a sixteen-hour day on isolated farmsteads; they were often beaten and mistreated and never saw their families or the shores of Britain again. But the real shock is that child migration did not end in the 1920s. Even after the Second World War,until it ended some twenty years ago (then 1989), around 10,000 were transported to Australia - where many were subjected to at best uncarng abandonment, and at worst a regime of appalling cruelty. Abuse and deception characterised the Australian schemes.Parents were told that their children had been adopted in Britain, children were brought up in Australian institutions to believe they were orphans. Now adults, they still break down when they relate their experiences, and for many the search for family has become a lifelong crusade.Because of the withholding or absence of information, only some are reunited with mothers and relatives they did not know existed - a reunion of happiness and confusion on one side, and guilt and disbelief on the other. 'Lost Children of the Empire' tells the remarkable story of the Child Migrants Trust set up,in 1987,to trace families and to help those involved to come to terms with what has happened. But nothing can explain away the connivance and irresponsiblity of the governments and organisations involved in this inhuman chapter of British history. 'Lost Children of the Empire' was the subject of a major British ITV documentary screened in May 1989. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact seller, because of the weight/value of this item for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

Sometimes childish, sometimes rude, always clever and always very, very funny, this book has delighted most, and outraged a few,Tolkien fans in the US for nearly 30 years. Pulling in references to popular culture and fantasy literature as a whole, this is a killingly effective parody of 'LORD OF THE RINGS'.From the dreary Goddamn (Gollum),to the feckless Arrowroot (Aragorn),the bungling Goodgulf (Gandalf) to the timid, meanminded boggies Frito (Frodo) and Dildo (Bilbo),no character is safe. Fleeing the Nozdrul, bored by acid- casualty Tim Benzedrine and harrassed throughout by the minions of Sorhed, the fellowship move through a Middle Earth like no other.Short, sharp and very much to the point, even Tolkien would be hard-pressed to suppress a giggle at 'BORED OF THE RINGS.' F. Kersting have been secially taken for this book.                    The colour and monochrome illustrations are divided into three main sections: a small group of portraits of Robert and his family; reproductions of drawings made by him,or under his direction, both on his Italian tour and for the later commissions; general views and details of most of the completed and extant works, ranging from grand conceptions such as the south front of Kedleston, and the richly decorated interiors at Syon and Osterley,to the minute detailing of such objects as door furnishings, mirrors, tables, chimneypieces, chairs, silverware, and carpets.                  Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!  N.B. On the night of 28 August 1944,three torpedoes from the German submarine U-859 sank the American merchant ship USS John Barry in the Arabian Sea off the eastern seaboard of Oman. The holds of the John Barry contained 3 million silver Saudi riyals worth 80 million dollars(US) and over 300 million dollars(US) in silver bullion. The 7,200-ton ship broke into two pieces and sank to a depth of 8,500 feet, more than one and a half miles. For forty-five years the great depth of the wreck ruled out any thoughts of salvage. However,in 1989 salvage rights were acquired by Sheikh Ahmed Farid al Aulaqi who engaged the French International Maritime Institute and Jean Roux, leader of the team which recovered artefacts from the Titanic.Roux and his team have developed technology which has resulted in an operation of deep-sea recovery never before possible. In 'Stalin's Silver' the story of the USS John Barry is recreated with the help of living survivors, including one of the German U-boat officers, and the mystery of the intended destination of 300 million dollars in silver is resolved.Stalin's Silver is as much a sensational story of politics and intrigue between governments during WW2 as it is the story of the salvage of the world's most valuable and mysterious sunken treasure. A wealthy widow who sent Agatha a letter before her death saying one of her family intended to kill her has been found dead. Author died 30th December,2019. Agatha Raisin has never been one for enforced holiday cheer, but her friendly little village of Carsely has always prided itself on its traditional Christmas festivities. But this year Mr John Sunday, an officer with the Cotswold Health and Safety Board, has chosen Christmas to crack down on what he sees as gross misconduct by every man, woman and child in the vicinity. The village shop is told it can no longer have wooden shelves 'in case someone is inflicted with a splinter'.The village school is ordered to leave lights on at night 'to prevent unauthorized intruders from tripping in the dark'.And children are warned not to play with 'counterfeit banknotes' after passing around toy money in the playground. Finally Mr Sunday goes too far when he rules that there cannot be a Christmas tree atop the church tower this year.Soon after the decree, and just before Christmas,Agatha is sipping a cup of tea and trying to stay awake at the Carsely Ladies Society meeting when a sudden scream wakes her from her stupor. The ladies rush out of the vicarage building to find Sunday lying face down in a holly bush, dead.Agatha is instantly on the case, but with such an unpopular victim,it's impossible to know where to start . . . Author's 21st Agatha Raisin novel to date (then 2010.She has also written 25 Hamish Macbeth tales - see my book ID rja682017 for UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn 'DEATH OF A POLICEMAN'. But when her body is discovered in a ditch, Hamish is forced to investigate a crime that the only known witness - now dead - has forgotten. . .   Hamish Macbeth as a character made his debut in fiction in 'Death of a Gossip',March 1985.        Hamish Macbeth was a Scottish mystery comdey-drama television series produced by BBC Scotland that aired from 26 March 1995 to 4 May 1997.It was loosely based on a series of mystery novels by M. Through the touching beauty of stained glass memorial windows in churches, cathedrals and RAF stations throughout Britain from the North of Scotland to the tip of Cornwall,in Wales and Northern Ireland,'Light Perpetual' briefly traces the history of aviation,in whose service so many men and women gave their lives. The narrative begins with the eleventh century monk who made a pair of wings and threw himself off Malmesbury Abbey tower. It continues through the First World War, through the feats of the early pioneers, and into the immense destructive power of aviation in the Second World War. Our deliverance in the Battle of Britain, our peril in the Battle of the Atlantic, the might of the American partnership, the Bomber offensive against Fortress Europe, and throughout the courage of the aircrews is recounted in relation to the windows. Survivors of the RAF,the USAAF,Dominion and Allied Air Forces gave windows in memory of their comrades, families gave them in memory of sons and brothers and villages erected them in memory of friends. The service of all these young men and women is brought to life in what Sir Basil Spence called 'living, breathing windows'. There is no better medium to remember them, their heroic stories crystallised in glass which lets in the light and whose background is the freedom of their element, the sky. The narrative of 'Light Perpetual' ends with the story of Gustav Anton,eighteen-year-old rear gunner of a Heinkel shot down near Southampton, who through the years until the end of his life filled a British church with stained glass in thankfulness and reconciliation. Any conventional account of the life of Edward Montagu,3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, will describe his passion for motorcars, which led to the founding of the National Motor Museum at his Hampshire home, his accession to the Montagu barony before his third birthday, his membership of the House of Lords for more than fifty years, founder chairman of both the Historic Houses Association and English Heritage, and his lifetime championship of Tourism. But his 'Who's Who' entry makes no mention of what became known as 'the Montagu Case',an event in his life in the early 1950s that had a direct influence on the changing of the law regarding consenting adult homosexuals. In 'Wheels Within Wheels' Montagu reveals for the first time his account of the events which resulted in two trials at Winchester Assizes,at the second of which, he and the other co-defendants,Peter Wildeblood and Michael Pitt-Rivers, were ultimately sentenced to imprisonment. Montagu was only 27 years old at the time and had hitherto refused to discuss these events. Now he writes for the very first time with great frankness. His account of what life was like in prison in the mid-1950s and how he,a peer, was treated by his fellow inmates is told with good humour. His memoirs benefit from the memories and diaries kept by his mother, who only died, aged 101,in 1996.Lord Montagu is one of the longest serving and active members of the House of Lords, being one of the 92 hereditary peers, elected in 1999,to continue to sit following the Labour Government's reforms. Besides motoring,Lord Montagu has enjoyed a full life in many other spheres,a life he relates wih gusto - be it about the heritage, the countryside, music, travel, film and sport. For the first time in one volume, here is a comprehensive review of naval flying from the end of WWII to the present day (then 1987).A fascinating work of reference in its own right,it also forms a superb companion to PSL's highly acclaimed encyclopaedias of the modern British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Paul Beaver begins by giving the background to the story in an introduction explaining the origins of naval aviation in 1904 and its development through the First and Second World Wars. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of the Fleet Air Arm's role in a wide variety of post-war campaigns from Korea and Suez to the Falklands and Beirut. The modern command structure and organization are then set out and a further chapter is devoted to explaining the technology involved in flying aircraft from ships, including such innovative devices as the angled flight deck and the mirror landing sight. All the squadrons, carriers,fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and weapons of the Fleet Air Arm are listed, with relevant histories, specifications and performance data. The book is packed with illustrations, including excellent b/w photographs and accurate scale drawings of the ships and aircraft which make it especially useful to model makers. 'Encyclopaedia of the Fleet Air Arm since 1945' provides an invaluable insight into the role of aircraft in the Royal Navy which no naval or aviation enthusiast will want to be without.See also rja2042.Please contact seller, because of the value of this item, for corrxct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

Aided by the enigmatic Celyn, who slipped across the boundary with reasons of her own to fear those who followed her,the brothers discover they have just one chance to undo the damage, triggering a desperate race against the approaching solstice. Travis hadn't been expecting snow.He also hadn't been expecting to encounter the ethereally beautiful Celyn inexplicably lost in his back garden.Finding himself as the quarry of a spectral hunt from another world came as something of a surprise too. And he certainly wasn't expecting today be the last he would ever know. Ancient mythology and the modern world collide in a quiet Cornish town in a race against the approaching winter solstice. What Brunel achieved in his short career, and the way he changed the face of parts of Britain, were truly astonishing. His most famous works such as the Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash, the Clifton Suspension Bridge,Paddington Station and Bristol Temple Meads too, have long been accepted as part of our heritage, but four generations after his death, there are numerous lesser known structures still functioning efficiently - and often more in harmony with the landscape than later projects. Here is the first systematic appraisal of Brunel's engineering achievements, arguably the greatest contribution to 19thC industrial architecture. They are seen in historical perspective and in close-up from the engineering and architectural points of view. Why did Brunel decide to do it that way; what were his alternatives? Was he wasteful? Daniel Gooch, his locomotive engineer, and later chairman of the GWR,once said: 'The commercial world thought him extravagant, but although he was so,great things are not done by those who count the cost of every thought and act.' and yet we learn here that Brunel's attention to detail was usually meticulous. A gazetteer encourages the reader to inspect what remains of structures engineered with an enthusiasm, imagination and flair the life of which has rarely been equalled. The text is enhanced by over eighty beautifully drawn diagrams, some likely to be of particular interest to the modeller, and over sixty outstanding photographs which where mostly taken for a public exhibition on Brunel's life and work. Back in the days of the smoke-filled rooms, the Tory grandee Lord Salisbury, who could not pronounce his Rs,invited the Cabinet into his room one by one and asked: 'Is it Wab or Hawold?' The smart money was on them all saying Wab. . . . Had J. R. Clynes pipped Ramsay MacDonald to the party Leadership, the millworker who'd left school at ten wOpuld have become Labour's first Prime Minister. In the dark days of war.Lord Halifax had first refusal on the premiership ahead of Winston Churchill. Both Hugh Gaitskell and John Smith would have been Prime Minister but for their sudden, early deaths. The contributors, each of them experts in political history, have asked themselves questions like: what shape would the welfare state and the cold war have taken if the Prime Minister had been Herbert Morrison instead of Clement Attlee? What would have been consequences for Northern Ireland had Norman Tebbit succeeded Margaret Thatcher? How would our present life be different without New Labour - a name we would never have heard if either Kinnock or Smith had become Prime Minister and not Tony Blair? Each of the chapters in this book describes events that really might have happened. 'Delta Force' is the only (then 1984) authoritative account of America's elite counter-terrorist unit and the definitive work on its personnel - their selection, training, weapons, and tactics. Because the action is also the man,the book chronicles the career of Colonel Charlie A. Beckwith and reveals how his combat record and experience with the British SAS Regiment and the Green Berets inspired him to bring Delta Force into being - and earned him the right to command it.Here is told for the first time the story of the gallant rescue,by a small force commanded by Beckwith,of the besieged Special Forces camp at Plei Me, which in October 1965 was surrounded by two North Vietnamese regiments. Here too are Beckwith's struggles against the military bureaucracy as he attempts to create and build America's only military counter-terrorist unit. An account of a bold, complex and incredibly difficult rescue mission - told by the man who led the assault team. The book reveals what was then America's closest-kept secret: the plan to release the US Embassy personnel held hostage in Iran. Here is a complete,minute-by-minute account of what happened in Iran the night of 24 April 1980: the landing of Desert One,the late arrival of the Marine helicopters, the terribly painful decision not to go forward and the tragic events leading to the fiery accident that cost eight American lives. A number of years ago, while on a business trip to London,I went to the British Museum and happened upon an exhibition of ancient playing cards. At the the very end of the exhibition was an incomplete deck of cards, illuminated by an unusual glow, almost as though the cards were alive.I was intrigued by the exhibit and captivated by the images on the cards: this was Alice in Wonderland as I had never seen it before. On the way to the airport the next morning,I stopped at a dealer's specialising in antique cards. When I told the dealer about the unusual exhibit,he revealed that he in fact owned the other cards missing from the deck.He then proceeded to tell me the story of 'The Looking Glass Wars'.That story is the one you now hold . . . Alyss was born into a world of unearthly delights.Destined to grow up and become Wonderland's most beloved Queen. Until her fairy-tale life was shattered. Like the reflection in a looking glass. Seeing her parents killed, she seeks refuge in our world, forgetting her own. Years later a stranger stirs her memory, compelling her to return. But her evil aunt,Queen Redd, now rules the land.Shrieking Seekers command the air. And deep in the darkness, something far more frightening is watching. And waiting. Purring with contentment.Grinning in anticipation . . . Forget all you know.Put aside your preconceived notions. And prepare to experience the extraordinary reality behind the fantasy . . . of Wonderland. Author's debut novel.                            Bedford plunges the reader into the frightening world of a man obsessed by vengeance.A world at once repulsive and irresistible, where the divisions between fantasy and reality, guilt and innocence become so blurred - that almost without realising it - we are ensnared by the apalling logic of a psychopath. Aldous Huxley, whose works are translated and studied throughout the world, will surely rank as one of the outstanding English men of letters of his time. His enquiring mind and acute intelligence led him into many and diverse fields of thought. He was also a man of great sweetness of temper, ith an unfailing sense of enjoyment and fun,and this made his company endlessly stimulating and entertaining. In writing the biography of such a man,Sybille Bedford,a friend of some thirty years, gives shape and coherence to the development of a life, that for all its extraordinary quality, had its common share of ups and downs. As a girl she lived for long periods in his household: the details of his life - gossip, picnics, jokes, money, work, the endless house-moves - were familiar to her at first hand. His friends were, often, her friends. His immense reading helped to form her mind.Like him her great distinction as a writer extends over other forms besides the novels for which she is best known on both sides of the Atlantic. So perfect a coming together of author and subject could hardly fail to produce a biography of high order.Companion volume to rja208. In the second half of his life Aldous Huxley became ever more deeply concerned with the condition of man in the 20thC,his power to multiply and to destroy himself, his relation to nature,to society,to the planet on which he must live and to the values he must live by. Yet as before Huxley is presented not only as a writer and thinker, but as a private man.We see him in his day-to-day life, in the free and easy world of Hollywood or at his isolated house in the arid beauty of the Nevada desert, his ventures into the world of films and the theatre,in the anxieties of WW2 and the trials of bereavement as well as the gaiety and happiness of his family relationships. These were the years of Grey Eminence,a historical biography that offers insight into the mysticism with which he was increasingly preoccupied; of 'Time Must Have A Stop' and 'Perennial Philosophy; The Doors of Perception',his controversial book on the use of hallucinogenic drugs; of 'Island',the 'good' Utopia that complements the satire of 'Brave New World'.However his achievements are rated, Huxley was an exceptional human being. So it is not altogether surprising that his life should exemplify to an exceptional degree the contradictions of the human condition. How does one reconcile, for instance,Huxley's devotion to his first wife with his seeming blindness to the stresses his dependence imposed upon her, and his renaissance after her death? How can one explain the diverse, sometimes perverse, methods he employed in his search for a state of self-transcendence? This evidence, above all, reveals Huxley as a man whose extraordinary range of knowledge was matched by kindness, fortitude and compassion; a man who was much loved. His lectures on American university campuses attracted many thousands of young people who instinctively recognised in him both the wisdom born of self-knowledge and true humanity. The reader of this biography will share that perception.Companion volume to rja329. Colour photographic wrap round dw/dj.Blue- green paper-covered bds with gilt letters to spine/backstrip and plain yellow eps. 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,310pp. Fletcher Brandon - nicknamed 'Red' - is a professional magician, and a good one.He has taught himself dexterity and ambidexterity; he has mastered the art of illusion. And he enjoys the thought that he has beguiled Rosa - dark hair, blue eyes, wicked combination - into falling for him. Then one evening after a successful show in Bradford where he performed his great Zigzag illusion - two large blades apparently being thrust into the body of The Lovely Kim - Red is told that Rosa is dead; fallen bizarrely to her death from a train.Red is grief-stricken - but dumbstruck, too, because he has no idea what she was doing on a train leaving Oxford on a Friday afternoon when she should have been at work. The arrival through the post of an anonymous parcel containing a few of her belongings sets him off on a trail of investigation and discovery; into Rosa's past, but also into the nature of their relationship. Red is a magician,a dealer in tricks and illusions; now he has to unscramble the real from the unreal in himself and in his life. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age.It really is an exceptional example for its cleanliness and brightness. In April 1916,a group of early aviators gathered in the fields beneath the crags and ramparts of Stirling Castle to form what was to become one of the Royal Air Force's most distinguished fighter squadrons.Few squadrons can match the history of 43 Squadron which has included being the first to undertake ground attack operations during the First World War,shooting down the first enemy aircraft over England in the Second World War, and achieving the remarkable double of shooting down 6 enemy aircraft in one day in both World Wars. Its distinctive emblem of the Fighting Cock embodies the spirit and resilience of a fighter squadron that has been in the vanguard of RAF operations for almost a century. Perhaps the Fighting Cocks' finest period occurred during the Battle of Britain when its Hurricanes destroyed 60 enemy aircraft with a further thirteen "probables" and twenty-five more damaged. With the advent of the jet age, 43 Squadron became the first unit to fly the Hunter, seeing operational duties in Aden, before re-equipping with the Phantom until the end of the Cold War.This new edition of the Fighting Cocks' history brings the story up to date and covers its 20 years of service with the Tornado F3, including the Gulf War, NATO operations over Bosnia, and the Iraq War. * Few squadrons can match the history of 43 Squadron,Fighting Cock embodies the spirit and resilience of a fighter squadron that has been in the vanguard of RAF operations for almost a century. Described hard, but fairly and honestly and in detail (probably too much!) - nowhere as bad as it reads or may sound!Bright, crisp, clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's black flecked, white paper-covered boards with dark grey cloth blind spine, with red fluorescent gilt ink letters to spine/ backstrip and white endpapers.Feps show small, slight waterstain to spine/backstrip's gutter's edge with another noticeable, small colour bled waterstain to bottom right-hand corner which has lightly and very faintly affected the same corner to the following half-title page.Associated and included ephemera of author's own personal, headed notepaper typewritten dated (April 21,2008) letter to recipient dedicatee (Charlotte) explaining donation of book and inclusion of his resume describing his law enforcement experience in L.A County Sheriff's Dept (for 21 years),his law enforcement consulting services to film production companies etc.[The recipient has some connection to/with Two Four Studios,Bush Park,Estover,Plymouth,Devon.UK.] His resume includes design, development and management of private guarded security operations, seminars etc.,lists his achievements and career achievements,a card bookmark, and a b/w photocopied, folded A4 paper sheet,of two US police deputies (one of them holding an automatic rifle/shotgun - standing behind a written placard stating 'Turn left of Get Shot') at Firestone Station during the Sixties, just after the riots of 1965. Where folded in half, the bottom,right-hand edge has a waterstain - which when placed within the feps,is revealed to be the source of the waterstain marking to the book! Author Stephen Beeler, worked for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department for 21 years, serving as everything from a patrol officer to working in administration. He knows law enforcement, and what can go wrong with it. 'The Firestone Syndrome' portrays what happens when officers of the law act above the law, taking things into their own hands. It also shows the checks and balances that provide damage control, and the bravery of thse who patrol their own. The "Stoney Boys," an elitist group of deputies assigned to the Firetone Station in South Central Los Angeles accept the axiom "absence of crime" - just not the method by which it should be achieved. Through the hard work of their superiors and one very brave fellow officer, this network of renegade cops is revealed and dealt with - but not without danger to their opposition. Fiction? Yes,but as Deputy Chief of Police Robert P. White of Flagstaff,AZ,put it,"This story reflects what can happen when the 'police' think that they are at war with their community.Who becomes the 'enemy'? Although situated in Los Angeles, this syndrome can occur anywhere that police leaders aren't diligent. Julian Beever is one such extraordinary master.More than just traditional flat drawings, the works Beever creates are uniquely three-dimensional anamorphic drawings. They are drawn in perspective and distorted so the subject can be viewed properly only from one particular viewpoint. For those who are standing in the right place, his chalk drawings invite them to step right into the scene or,in the case of the artists well-known Swimming Pool in the High Street, dive right into the water. Pavement Chalk Artist includes a fabulous selection of Beever's most intriguing anamorphic drawings. Each one is accompanied by a description of the techniques he used and the challenges he overcame. These photographs record the development of his unusual skill and understanding of perspective. Readers can see how his art progresses and matures as he takes on commissioned works and a wealth of original, inventive subjects in locations worldwide. The photographs tell the story, giving readers both an understanding of the principles of this 3-D art form and the pleasure of sharing the scenes that passersby once enjoyed before these unique works disappeared forever. Working with the full support of Scotland Yard, the authors present the first history of the C.I.D. to appear for half a century.Paul Begg and Keith Skinner have discovered documents, memoirs and photographs never published before, some not even known to have existed. They give a full picture of the development of the detective and, uniquely, set it against a changing social scene. 'The Scotland Yard Files' scans the fascinating history of the C.I.D. from the first Great Train Robbery in 1885 to Jack the Ripper;Crippen to the Kray Twins; the Siege of Sidney Street to the Iranian Embassy Siege. It also chronicles the scandals which have periodically rocked the force, from the Great Scotland Yard Scandal, out of which the C.I.D. was born,to the Porn Enquiry. What emerges is a story which shows that crime essentially hasn't changed - people have - and that the C.I.D.'s most difficult job is to adapt to changing social standards.Through this survey of 150 years,'The Scotland Yard Files' looks at the type of police force we have now and that we may get in the future. For over 75 years, the loss of the Titanic has captured the popular imagination, and one of the most intriguing aspects is the number of people who claimed to have received a psychic portent of the tragedy. Many heeded the warnings and were saved. But others went ahead in spite of their serious misgivings and so were lost with the ship. George Behe here investigates 135 fascinating cases which claimed to have a pyschic element. On closer scrutiny he has found that some seem to be mere coincidence, while others are genuine mistakes or deliberate hoaxes. Many accounts do indeed have a possible psychic connection, but lack some vital piece of evidence to prove the case conclusively either way. Most baffling of all are those incidents which cannot be explained away purely in rational terms, and which do indeed seem to be examples of genuine paranormal phenomena. After careful study, some curious events are revealed that have no apparent origin in normal human experience. With fifty photographs, many published here for the first time, this book provides an unusual perspective on the story of the Titanic which every open-minded reader will find engrossing. George Behe has been fascinated by the Titanic story since he was a small boy, when his grandmother told him about it - she lost two relatives in the disaster. He is a member of the Titanic Historical Society and spends most of his spare time undertaking further research into the ship and its passengers. He is fortunate in counting several Titanic survivors among his friends. As the Titanic sailed majestically out of Southampton on the first leg of her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912,she was heralded as 'practically unsinkable'.Four nights later she brushed an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic and took Captain Smith and 1,500 of his passengers and crew to their deaths in the freezing water.Since that tragic night, reports have come to light of people who,by word or deed, seemingly exhibited foreknowledge of the Titanic disaster.Amongst those who perished was the famous spiritualist W.T.Stead and many paranormal phenomena were reported which coincided with his death. But people from all walks of life - crew, eminent passengers, even the Captain - were involved in some way with apparently psychic occurences. This dispassionate critique looks at 135 carefully documented instances of psychic activity, the unlikely, the possible and the inexplicable, giving a new slant to an endlessly fascinating episode of history. For this dramatic record of Westcountry shipwrecks spanning more than a century John Behenna has drawn upon his own remarkable collection of wreck photographs,as well as other private and public sources,to assemble over one hundred illustrations, many of which have never previously been published. All victims come alike to the treacherous,reef-strewn coastlines of Devon,Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and among the great variety of stricken vessels featured in this book are tall ships from the golden age of sail - the 'Queen Margaret',the 'Cromdale' and the 'Herzogin Cecile' - ocean liners and tankers, including the infamous 'Torrey Canyon',and a host of other types, large and small, from trading schooners and tramp steamers to trawlers, drifters and luggers of the off-shore fishing fleets. Many of the photographs are of particular interest to maritime history as the only surviving pictorial record of certain ships, whilst others,by the contrast they provide with the contemporary scene, are a valuable record of coastlines and havens as they were before they were spoilt by modern development. Les Miserables has made musical history. It has become a cultural, financial and social phenomenon. In just three years(then 1989),over a million people have flocked to see it and in ticket revenues alone it has grossed 150 million dollars. It is currently being performed worldwide and in 1992 Alan Parker celebrates Les Miserables in celluloid with another major feature film. It all began with the book,'Les Miserables',which Victor Hugo started writing in 1836.It was not until 1980 that its musical potential was realised when two young Frenchmen - Alain Boublil and Cluade-Michel Schonberg - adapted Les Miserables for the French stage. In 1982 the impresario Cameron Mackintosh stumbled on their record, decided to work on it in English and the trials and tribulations behind the genesis of a major international hit began. Edward Behr goes right back to the book and the fascinating events surrounding its development, not least the dramas in Victor Hugo's own personal life.He conveys the sheer excitement and wonder surrounding the conception and production of the musical. 'Les Miserables - History in the Making' incorporates first-hand interviews (with casts, directors, producers),hundreds of photographs, set and costume illustrations (some of which never before reproduced) and the complete libretto from the show.It offers a historically informed and challenging thesis and makes a lasting record of a unique and unforgettable venture. 'My vivid memories are all of the sea.' Keith Beken, sailing photographer extraordinary, never spoke a truer word. The sea lives, pounds and glistens through this biography of a life spent on it and beside it,photographing boats of every description - the great yachts of the past, elegant liners, naval vessels, power boats, tall ships, the racing yachts of today - these boats, and the people who sailed them, live in these pages. All the great sailing events of a century - Edward VII and the German Kaiser racing against each other in their mighty yachts,George V racing Britannia in the Big Time, the America's Cup,Uffa Foxx's new dinghy designs after the war, transatlantic and transoceanic races,Tall Ships meetings,Cowes Weeks and Round the Island races - all are recaptured here in vivid phrase and living picture. Keith Beken's humorous, vigorous personality, his lively approach to every situation - marooned in the Shetland Islands in the early days of the war, failing to get pictures of Olympic sailing events in Italy - convey his enthusiasm on every page - action, sparkle, excitement abound.Beken of Cowes is not just Keith Beken himself - it's a family tradition now three generations strong - innovators and inventors in photography at sea.Part of the fascination of 'Thr Beken File' lies in the story of the camera problems faced and solved, from the first sea-going camera built in their chemist's shop last century onwards. His advice on how to get the best camera shots of racing yachts and speed boats comes from expert knowledge of how the boats perform, how the sea behaves, and how the camera reacts - a unique combination of skills which have earned Keith Beken his royal warrant as photographer to HRH Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh, and his renown as the greatest sailing photographer of them all. There is a delight of many kinds for the readers of this book - delight for the eye in the wonderful photographs;delight in the exuberant and vivid peronality of the author, and pleasures and delight in sharing the adventures of a life lived to the full.
