Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age.It really is an exceptional example for its cleanliness and brightness.
In April 1916,a group of early aviators gathered in the fields beneath the crags and ramparts of Stirling Castle to form what was to become one of the Royal Air Force's most distinguished fighter squadrons.Few squadrons can match the history of 43 Squadron which has included being the first to undertake ground attack operations during the First World War,shooting down the first enemy aircraft over England in the Second World War, and achieving the remarkable double of shooting down 6 enemy aircraft in one day in both World Wars.
Its distinctive emblem of the Fighting Cock embodies the spirit and resilience of a fighter squadron that has been in the vanguard of RAF operations for almost a century. Perhaps the Fighting Cocks' finest period occurred during the Battle of Britain when its Hurricanes destroyed 60 enemy aircraft with a further thirteen "probables" and twenty-five more damaged.
With the advent of the jet age, 43 Squadron became the first unit to fly the Hunter, seeing operational duties in Aden, before re-equipping with the Phantom until the end of the Cold War.This new edition of the Fighting Cocks' history brings the story up to date and covers its 20 years of service with the Tornado F3, including the Gulf War, NATO operations over Bosnia, and the Iraq War. * Few squadrons can match the history of 43 Squadron,Fighting Cock embodies the spirit and resilience of a fighter squadron that has been in the vanguard of RAF operations for almost a century.

enjoy the story Best Wishes Stephen P. Beeler.4-21-08.',no price-clip - absence of publisher's price.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy, colour pictorial illustrated upper panel, with red fluorescent gilt, silver+ black lettering, critics' reviews to rear panel; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present - though some inevitable but light and superficial scoring/indents - without affecting the boards beneath.
Internally to dw/dj,a waterstain to length of front inner flap's crease, smaller near imperceptible waterstains to both head+foot of spine/backstrip also - nothing visible externally and WITHOUT affecting the boards beneath at all.Top rear corner minimally bumped.Though top edges bright and generally clean, some very faint and near imperceptible dust-soiling(?) spotting, fore-edges bright and generally clean too, though a light trace of waterstaining to foot at bottom of page edges, but invisible internally.Bottom edges similarly affected with watermarks towards spine/backstrip edges and towards the fore-edges edge. Described hard, but fairly and honestly and in detail (probably too much!) - nowhere as bad as it reads or may sound!Bright, crisp, clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's black flecked, white paper-covered boards with dark grey cloth blind spine, with red fluorescent gilt ink letters to spine/ backstrip and white endpapers.Feps show small, slight waterstain to spine/backstrip's gutter's edge with
another noticeable,small colour bled
waterstain to bottom right-hand corner which has lightly and very faintly affected the same corner to the following half-title page.Associated and included ephemera of author's own personal, headed notepaper typewritten dated (April 21,2008) letter to recipient dedicatee (Charlotte) explaining donation of book and inclusion of his resume describing his law enforcement experience in L.A County Sheriff's Dept (for 21 years),his law enforcement consulting services to film production companies etc.[The recipient has some connection to/with Two Four Studios,Bush Park,Estover,Plymouth,Devon.UK.] His resume includes design, development and management of private guarded security operations, seminars etc.,lists his achievements and career achievements,a card bookmark, and a b/w photocopied, folded A4 paper sheet,of two US police deputies (one of them holding an automatic rifle/shotgun - standing behind a written placard stating 'Turn left of Get Shot') at Firestone Station during the Sixties, just after the riots of 1965. Where folded in half, the bottom,right-hand edge has a waterstain - which when placed within the feps,is revealed to be the source of the waterstain marking to the book!
Author Stephen Beeler, worked for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department for 21 years, serving as everything from a patrol officer to working in administration. He knows law enforcement, and what can go wrong with it.
'The Firestone Syndrome' portrays what happens when officers of the law act above the law, taking things into their own hands. It also shows the checks and balances that provide damage control, and the bravery of thse who patrol their own.
The "Stoney Boys," an elitist group of deputies assigned to the Firetone Station in South Central Los Angeles accept the axiom "absence of crime" - just not the method by which it should be achieved. Through the hard work of their superiors and one very brave fellow officer, this network of renegade cops is revealed and dealt with - but not without danger to their opposition.
Fiction? Yes,but as Deputy Chief of
Police Robert P. White of Flagstaff,AZ,put it,"This story reflects what can happen when the 'police' think that they are at war with their community.Who becomes the 'enemy'? Although situated in Los Angeles,
this syndrome can occur anywhere that police leaders aren't diligent.

The pavement chalk artist is a master of art, perspective, creativity and performance. Julian Beever is one such extraordinary master.More than just traditional flat drawings, the works Beever creates are uniquely three-dimensional anamorphic drawings. They are drawn in perspective and distorted so the subject can be viewed properly only from one particular viewpoint. For those who are standing in the right place, his chalk drawings invite them to step right into the scene or,in the case of the artists well-known Swimming Pool in the High Street, dive right into the water. Pavement Chalk Artist includes a fabulous selection of Beever's most intriguing anamorphic drawings. Each one is accompanied by a description of the techniques he used and the challenges he overcame. These photographs record the development of his unusual skill and understanding of perspective.
Readers can see how his art progresses and matures as he takes on commissioned works and a wealth of original, inventive subjects in locations worldwide. The photographs tell the story, giving readers both an understanding of the principles of this 3-D art form and the pleasure of sharing the scenes that passersby once enjoyed before these unique works disappeared forever.

150 years ago, amid considerable public suspicion,a tiny squad of six plain-clothes detectives was set up at Scotland Yard. From this grew the formidable Criminal Investigation Department, reknowned throughout the world for its unparalleled skill and experience in catching criminals. The famous newspaper headline,'SCOTLAND YARD CALLED IN.' still evokes all the pride and excitement of a crack team of detectives tackling the most notorious and baffling of crimes.
Working with the full support of Scotland Yard, the authors present the first history of the C.I.D. to appear for half a century.Paul Begg and Keith Skinner have discovered documents, memoirs and photographs never published before, some not even known to have existed. They give a full picture of the development of the detective and, uniquely, set it against a changing social scene.
'The Scotland Yard Files' scans the fascinating history of the C.I.D. from the first Great Train Robbery in 1885 to Jack the Ripper;Crippen to the Kray Twins; the Siege of Sidney Street to the Iranian Embassy Siege. It also chronicles the scandals which have periodically rocked the force, from the Great Scotland Yard Scandal, out of which the C.I.D. was born,to the Porn Enquiry.
What emerges is a story which shows that crime essentially hasn't changed - people have - and that the C.I.D.'s most difficult job is to adapt to changing social standards.Through this survey
of 150 years,'The Scotland Yard Files' looks at the type of police force we have now and that we may get in the future.

For over 75 years, the loss of the Titanic has captured the popular imagination, and one of the most intriguing aspects is the number of people who claimed to have received a psychic portent of the tragedy. Many heeded the warnings and were saved. But others went ahead in spite of their serious misgivings and so were lost with the ship.
George Behe here investigates 135 fascinating cases which claimed to have a pyschic element. On closer scrutiny he has found that some seem to be mere coincidence, while others are genuine mistakes or deliberate hoaxes. Many accounts do indeed have a possible psychic connection, but lack some vital piece of evidence to prove the case conclusively either way. Most baffling of all are those incidents which cannot be explained away purely in rational terms, and which do indeed seem to be examples of genuine paranormal phenomena. After careful study, some curious events are revealed that have no apparent origin in normal human experience. With fifty photographs, many published here for the first time, this book provides an unusual perspective on the story of the Titanic which every open-minded reader will find engrossing. George Behe has been fascinated by the Titanic story since he was a small boy, when his grandmother told him about it - she lost two relatives in the disaster. He is a member of the Titanic Historical Society and spends most of his spare time undertaking further research into the ship and its passengers. He is fortunate in counting several Titanic survivors among his friends.
As the Titanic sailed majestically out of Southampton on the first leg of her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912,she was heralded as 'practically unsinkable'.Four nights later she brushed an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic and took Captain Smith and 1,500 of his passengers and crew to their deaths in the freezing water.Since that tragic night, reports have come to light of people who,by word or deed, seemingly exhibited foreknowledge of the Titanic disaster.Amongst those who perished was the famous spiritualist W.T.Stead and many paranormal phenomena were reported which coincided with his death. But people from all walks of life - crew, eminent passengers, even the Captain - were involved in some way with apparently psychic occurences. This dispassionate critique looks at 135 carefully documented instances of psychic activity, the unlikely, the possible and the inexplicable, giving a new slant to an endlessly fascinating episode of history.

For this dramatic record of Westcountry shipwrecks spanning more than a century John Behenna has drawn upon his own remarkable collection of wreck photographs,as well as other private and public sources,to assemble over one hundred illustrations, many of which have never previously been published.
All victims come alike to the treacherous,reef-strewn coastlines of Devon,Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and among the great variety of stricken vessels featured in this book are tall ships from the golden age of sail - the 'Queen Margaret',the 'Cromdale' and the 'Herzogin Cecile' - ocean liners and tankers, including the infamous 'Torrey Canyon',and a host of other types, large and small, from trading schooners and tramp steamers to trawlers, drifters and luggers of the off-shore fishing fleets.
Many of the photographs are of particular interest to maritime history as the only surviving pictorial record of certain ships, whilst others,by the contrast they provide with the contemporary scene, are a valuable record of coastlines and havens as they were before they were spoilt by modern development.

Les Miserables has made musical history.
It has become a cultural, financial and social phenomenon. In just three years(then
1989),over a million people have flocked to see it and in ticket revenues alone it has grossed 150 million dollars. It is currently being performed worldwide and in 1992 Alan Parker celebrates Les Miserables in celluloid with another major feature film. It all began with the book,'Les Miserables',which Victor Hugo started writing in 1836.It was not until 1980 that
its musical potential was realised when two young Frenchmen - Alain Boublil and Cluade-Michel Schonberg - adapted Les Miserables for the French stage. In 1982 the impresario Cameron Mackintosh stumbled on their record, decided to work on it in English and the trials and tribulations behind the genesis of a major international hit began.
Edward Behr goes right back to the book and the fascinating events surrounding its
development, not least the dramas in Victor Hugo's own personal life.He conveys the sheer excitement and wonder surrounding the conception and production of the musical. 'Les Miserables - History in the Making' incorporates first-hand interviews (with casts, directors, producers),hundreds of photographs, set and costume illustrations (some of which never before reproduced) and the complete libretto from the show.It offers a historically informed and challenging thesis and makes a lasting record of a unique and unforgettable venture.

Described hard but honestly and fairly appears better than it reads! Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age 50+ year-old age. It is only the described faults that prevents a slightly higher overall grading.Despite them,it is still an acceptable example. When newly married young woman Frances Aldridge loses her husband in a freak car accident, friends persuade her that a holiday in the United States would help her to recover her vitality.Deciding to travel by bus, she chooses a route which transverses the vast American landscape, from New York to Colorado. As she crosses the States she begins to fall in love with their splendour, and on the bus, she encounters many friendly people who share their stories, including Jim Field - strangely enigmatic in this open country, handsome and travelling with a companion who she takes to be his mother. One night in Cleveland, Frances is woken abruptly in the middle of the night, by what she thinks is the door to her hotel room clicking shut. The next morning, she discovers that her pearl earrings are missing. She does not bother to report this minor theft, but is appalled to read in the news a few days later that an elderly woman had been murdered in the same hotel the very night she had been there.
In the dramatic story that unfolds, Frances finds herself increasingly feeling as though she is being followed, state to state, city to city . . . and murder to murder.

On 1 January 1915,Virginia Woolf set herself to write a day-by-day diary; interrupted after a few weeks by illness,
she began again in 1917,and from then until a few days before her death in 1941 habitually used the diary to record her activities, observations and preoccupations. The result is one of the great diaries, now available for the first time in a one-volume,abridged edition (originally a 5-volume set).
Virginia Woolf turned to her diary as to an intimate friend,to whom she could freely and spontaneously confide the thoughts and images uppermost in her mind.
Whether describing public events or the joys and trials of domestic life,
gossiping about her friends or wrestling with the difficulties of her art,Virginia Woolf writes with unfailing grace, courage and honesty, and a lively wit which makes her one of the most moving and entertaining diarists of this,or any,
century.

All the books illustrated in this irresistible little volume were collected by Michael Bell when he owned an antiquarian bookshop. His criterion for inclusion in his 'Not for Sale' bookshop's window display was simple: these were old books - that had graced publishers' catalogues prior to WW2 - that raised a grin if not a guffaw from his customers as soon as they saw them.
Some of the titles are simply mystifying like the enigmatic 'Book of Blank Maps - With Instructions'; or bizarre like Frances E. Willard's perfectly straight-faced account,'How I Learned to Ride the Bicycle',others evoke a world which has long since vanished, like Paulo Montegazza's manual on 'The Art of Taking a Wife',but most frequent of all are the titles, like 'Scouts in Bondage' itself, along with the boy's story 'Invisible Dick',for example,or another children's novel,'How Nell Scored' that now suggest something quite at odds with the authors' original intentions.

The River Yangtze - rock-infested,rapid-strewn,the Everest of rivers.
No-one has successfully travelled up-river towards the source.
Squadron Leader Mike Cole, veteran of hovercraft expeditions all over the world, rose to the challenge. In March 1990,the British Hovercraft Expedition to China was launched from Hong Kong.
This was to be adventure with a purpose. With the explorers went a team of doctors, aiming to take a UNICEF vaccination programme to the remote riverside areas. They were joined by engineers to test the new hovercraft materials in the harshest
conditions.
The obstacles faced by the expedition were immense - endless negotiations with the Chinese authorities, lethal road conditions as they towed the hovercraft over high mountain passes, the virtual cancellation of their ambitious medical programme, and the death-defying challenges of the mighty river itself.
Dick Bell tells of the heartaches as well as the triumphs as the team overcame these obstacles.Thirty-two pages of colour photographs give fascinating glimpses of the real China, and capture all the excitement of tackling the great river.

Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable and particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 50+ year-old age.It is only the faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite them it really is still an exemplary example for its brightness and lack of major detracting faults.
The 2nd volume of a two-volume biography of Virginia Woolf, written posthumously by her nephew Quentin Bell and the book is unique, being based upon unpublished rather than published sources.Prior to his death Leanard Woolf invited the author [Virginia's nephew] to write her biography, giving him access to all her private documents including the diaries which she kept for most of her life; and in addition he had access to two important archives and has seen a great many letters, memoirs, and unpublished works of her fiction.
Volume Two discusses in detail her life with Leonard Woolf and the prolonged mental breakdown of the years 1912-1915.The origins and growth of the Hogarth Press are described and also Virginia's gradual emergence as a novelist of ever-increasing reputation. The later history of her friends in the 'Bloomsbury Group' is examined as also some new and important friends of her later years: Katherine Mansfield, T.S. Eliot, Ethel Smyth, Hugh Walpole and, most important of all,Vita Sackville-West.Professor Bell describes the struggles involved in the writing of 'The Waves' and later of 'The Years',the political and personal distresses of Virginia's last decade which end with the war and her suicide.
Woolf's character was difficult and complex but Professor Bell has succeeded in presenting her with skill, humour and candour. He has produced a truthful, fascinating and extraordinarily evocative portrait of this remarkable woman. CRAIG BELLAMY is one of those footballers
you can't ignore.If he plays for your team,you love him.If he doesn't . . .
Everyone thinks they know Bellamy.Pace and passion.A handful for defenders.
Scoring goals and winding up opponents.Winning friends - and making enemies.
Blessed with a natural talent,he has enjoyed a colourful career at a host of top clubs. The proud Welshman is one of the top ten appearance makers for his country.
But his rise to the top of the game wasn't
easy.It could have all been so different.
He came from a loving family but temptations lay in his way.Follow the crowd or follow a dream? Join your mates in a gang on the streets or try to make it as a pro? It was a choice between the two.
Bellamy chose football and became a rebel
with a cause. He quickly climbed the ladder
and shared dressing rooms with some of the
biggest stars in football - from Ryan Giggs to Steven Gerrard. His burning desire to succeed made him a winner on the pitch, but that same passion also got him into trouble. There were famous bust-ups with John Arne Riise and Alan Shearer, not to mention rows with Graeme Souness, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Mancini.
Away from the spotlight, there is a different side to Bellamy. His earnings from this book will be going to the Craig Bellamy Foundation,a charity which offers children in Sierra Leone the chance to fulfil their sporting potential. He is a devoted dad and was brokenhearted at the tragic and shocking death of his close friend Gary Speed.
'Craig Bellamy: GoodFella' uncovers the real man behind the player and reveals the untold stories of a life inside football's
fast lane.
Like Bellamy himself,it doesn't hold back.

Despite mechanization, industrialization and conurbations familiar to us all, there are areas unspoilt by man's hand; the wild and sometimes lonely places of Britain where nature and the elements are the predominant forces. In this beautiful book the artist David Bellamy captures through his many paintings and sketches the very essence of the untouched landscape.
It is difficult to convey in words the atmosphere, attraction and mystery of Britain's wild places evoked by his paintings, most of which have never been published. In his foreword John Hillaby writes:
'David Bellamy is a master at image-making ... he has the extra-normal gift of the poet's eye.At all times, especially during storms, places speak to him ... he can interpret visually the landscapes, ... landscapes as distinctive as fingerprints.'
The beauty of Bellamy's paintings tell their own story. How he managed to paint and sketch many of the places, often against great odds and in terrible weather conditions,is his own personal and exciting story and is full of anecdotes.A delight to look at,a joy to read which awaken the compelling attraction of the wild places.

[unpaginated] half-title+title pages, colour frntis,b/w lozenge vignetted contents page.
The River Thames has been the pivot of much of
England's history, and it runs from the Cotswolds to London through some of the country's loveliest and most typical scenery.
'The Historic Thames', celebrates both these aspects through A.R. Quinton's inimitable paintings of the riverside villages and landscape and Hilaire Belloc's fascinating and wide-ranging survey of the river's history and topography.
Some seventy+ of Quinton's paintings have been
chosen for this volume and, like all his work, they convey a glorious sense of the richness and tranquility of life at the turn of the century.
Belloc's absorbing essay touches on
innumerable subjects, from the derivation of place names to military strategy, from politics to geology, revealing his belief in the
importance of the past to give meaning to the present, and showing the diversity of Britain's heritage.
'The Historic Thames' is a companion to 'A.R. Quinton's England' (Webb & Bower/Michael Joseph
1987).Both books bear witness to the special charms of the English countryside and its history.
Alfred Robert Quinton was born in Peckham (London) in 1853.He studied at Heatherly's Art School and started work as an engraver. From 1885 he concentrated on watercolours, especially landscapes, showing his work regularly in London galleries.Towards the end of the 1890's he started illustrating books on English scenic subjects. He is best known for the postcards of villages, towns and holiday areas reproduced from his paintings by J. Salmon Ltd., of Sevenoaks, Kent, between 1912 and his death in 1934.

Players, managers, direcors and now even grounds come and go,but football supporters are always there. As such, football clubs do not belong to boards, shareholders or chairmen, they are the fans'.So it is from their point of view, and their moment in time, from the Boxer Uprising in China, through two World Wars, the Fifties and CND,Sixties London, the slump of the Eighties and into the future - the Irons of 2095,their second centenary year - that 'Bubbles,Hammers & Dreams' looks at the growth of West Ham United Football Club.
Arthur Hopcroft,in his classic work 'The Football Man',wrote: 'Football has not been a sideshow of this century. What happens on the football field matters, not in the way that food matters, but as poetry does to some people and alcohol does to others; it engages the personality.'
In 'Bubble,Hammers & Dreams' this is essentially what Brian Belton has captured. Across the decades and generations, his book looks at West Ham United through the lens of historic events and the eyes of the past.
And this is not just a book for West Ham supporters. It should be read by anyone who has an interest in football and who seeks to understand how passion, loyalty and love for a football club are transported over thousands of miles, down the years and across entire communities.

On 1 April 1972 West Ham United made sporting history by becoming the first club from the highest echelon of English football to field three black players in League competition.Their manager,Ron Greenwood, picked: Clive Charles (born in Canning Town, just a few miles from the Hammer's Upton Park home); Ade Coker (from Nigeria),and Clyde Best, who had made his way to London's Docklands from Bermuda. Together, these three players smashed a social barrier for this most romantic and enigmatic of clubs.
'East End Heroes,Stateside Kings' tells of the origins of these players, that fateful day in '72 and their lives over the following 30 years as they became pioneering figurs in the success of the North american Soccer League.
After being named by Pele in the all-time greatest NASL team,Charles managed the leading College side Portland Timbers, guided the American Women to World Cup glory and achieved historic results in Olympic competition with the US Under-23s.
Coker was another leading light in the modern American game and represented the USA at international level, overcoming devastating injury problems.
Best grew to be a legend in the NASL,and along with Charles, was one of only four former West Ham players to manage at internationa; level when he took over the Bermudan national team.He has recently been awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) - (then circa 2008.)
Painstakingly researched and including a foreword and interview with Kenny Lynch, one of Britain's best-loved entertainers and lifelong West Ham fan, this book tells the story of three young black men who genuinely broke the mould.
Dr Brian Belton was born within a short walk from West Ham's Boleyn ground. He is a senior lecturer at the YMCA George Williams College in Canning and has written more than twenty books, more than a dozen of which relate to the chronicles of West Ham Unites, making him the foremost historian of the club.
Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.

Sincere thanks to Mrs Ludwig Bemelmans and Barbara Bemelmans for their help and advice in adapting and restoring the text and art for 'Madeline's Christmas',and for lending us the few remaining pieces of original art.For this book, the art has been photographically enlarged and recoloured by Jody Wheeler to prepare it for reproduction.
"In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines."
It's Christmas Eve and all is not well with Miss Clavel and her charges. They are in bed with colds, feeling miserable.
All except Madeline. She is busy tending to her friends, until a knock comes at the door...
The rug-selling magician is a Christmas blessing.Madeline buys his rugs, and then, colds forgotten, the twelve little girls are whisked away on magic carpet rides. . .
Madeline's one of twelve girls in a convent boarding school in Paris - the only one out of pattern. She is the only child not afraid of mice, the only one who even breaks out of the 'two straight lines' in which they walk out 'in rain or shine',the only one who has an appendix scar, the only one who falls into the river and is fished out by a dog - and the only one who knows best 'How to frighten Miss Clavel',their strict but devoted teacher.
Ingenious rhymes and the endless inventiveness of a superb caricaturist have established for all time Pepito the Bad Hat,Genevieve the excessively fertile bitch adopted by the school, Miss Clavel (always seen either stiffly vertical or fully extended as she runs ever faster towards some anticipated disaster),and the demure individualist Madeline.
Ludwig Bemelmans,an Austrian author, born in 1898 and emigrated to America in 1914.Notable for his 'Madeline' picture books with verse texts.'Madeline's Rescue' (1953) won the Caldecott medal. He died in 1962.

A wide ranging and entertaining celebration of cricket.
'My Spin on Cricket' tells the story of the great game through the eyes of one of its most popular commentators.Richie Benaud, former Australian cricket captain of distinction, has been a successful and highly respected writer on the sport for many years and is now globally admired for
his work with both Australian and British television.Affectionately known as 'The
Voice of Cricket',he is uniquely qualified
to pass comment on the state of the game,
past and present, which he does in his own inimitable style.
Cricket is put under the spotlight as Richie Benaud covers all aspects of the game.Gambling, sledging, umpiring and showmanship do not escape his attention,
and the future is also well considered,
together with the roles of leadership and sponsorship and the benefits of various technological advances.
Full of personal anecdotes and infused with his distinctive sense of humour and thoughtful opinions, this book is entertaining and well informed in equal measure.Richie Benaud's spin on cricket will absorb cricket lovers the world over.
Born in New South Wales in 1930,Richie Benaud was a high-class allrounder,
captaining Australia in twenty-eight of sixty-three Tests in which he played and never losing a series while in charge. In 1963 he became the first cricketer to complete the 'double' of 2,000 runs and 200 wickets in Test cricket. He remains one
of only ten Australians to have scored more than 10,000 runs and taken over 500 wickets in first-class cricket and was the
first player to complete the double of 2,000 runs and 200 wickets in Australian Sheffield Shield cricket.
He began his broadcasting career on BBC Radio in 1960 and moved across to BBC Television three years later while still playing for Australia. He has worked for Australia's Channel NIne since 1977 and joined Britain's Channel Four in 1999.
Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, colour pictorial,wrap-around artwork,by Gillian Hills, illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners.Minimal bumping with reciprocal creasing to both head+foot of spine/backstrip and miniscule rubbing to corners, and bookseller's label to front inner flap of dw/dj. A small scratch/scrape with miniscule loss of colour paper of artwork,on upper wrap, towards top right-hand corner.Top edge lightly aged and dust-soiled,with minimal spotting/foxing,fore- edge brighter and cleaner; contents bright, tight and clean.Bright,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original pale blue+brown speckled cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean, plain white endpapers with minimal,faint,off-set foxing from dw/dj's inner flaps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn, 7-251pp [paginated] includes 11 chapters; plus [unpaginated] blank,half-title-title pages,a dedication, author's note on last page and a blank to rear.
'The Deep' has all the drama and suspense
that made Peter Benchley's first novel,
'Jaws',a worldwide bestseller and the most
successful in history (then 1976).
The secret which unlocks the story lies on a coral reef off Bermuda.
It's a harmless-looking ampoule - presumably from the medicine chest of the schooner Goliath which went down during World War Two.It is found by Gail and David Sanders, honeymooners who chose Bermuda for the diving they love.An agreeable underwater potter,a curious find .... and suddenly Gailand David are plunged headlong into a situation of appalling danger.
It comes from Cloche, the sinister revolutionary whose political pull embraces the island's authorities and whose reputation as a 'bush' magician terrifies the poplace. To get his hands on what that ampoule represents,Cloche will stop at nothing. The Sanders' only ally against him is Romer Treece, diver and treasue-hunter extraordinairy, who is afraid of nothing in or out of water and has his own good reasons for thwarting Cloche. From him they learn that the
'Goliath' was not the reef's only victim, nor is her cargo its only secret.
What follows is a race against time,a battle of wits against Cloche, and a daring challenge to the sea and the perils it conceals.
Peter Benchley writes of the underwater world with breathtaking authority: the terrors that lurk at the edge of the diver's vision, the seductive promise of what may be hidden under the next lump of coral,or the next. And his touch is no less sure with the desperate human drama triggered by that small, apparently harmless object picked up off the sand.
The innumerable admirers of 'Jaws' will expect a great deal from 'The Deep'.They will not be disappointed.

and a less crooked world. As he takes his place in the receiving line,he looks forward to meeting the guest of honour, Miss Rose Tuckaloo, fashion model, but when his turn comes he disgraces himself and runs.As a result of the festivities,he is cruelly interrogated by sophisticated and witty politicians who take him to Paris for lunch. The nightmare hounding and final

"HALLO,EVERYONE.I'M BACK!" The Rumours are true - Christopher Robin is back in the Hundred Acre Wood. A.A. Milne's stories about Pooh and his Forest friends have been loved by generations of children and their parents ever since the publication of 'Winnie-the-Pooh' in 1926.Now eighty years on,David Benedictus takes up the pen where Milne left off.'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood' is the much-anticipated official sequel to 'Winnie-the-Pooh' and 'The House at Pooh Corner'.
'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood' by author David Benedictus picks up from the poignant ending of Milne's last Pooh book,'The House at Pooh Corner',in which Christopher Robin is growing up and heading away to school. "Pooh, promise you won't forget about me,ever. Not even when I'm a hundred," he tells the bear, and they leave together. In these new adventures we revisit all our favourite characters, and are introduced to someone new - Lottie the otter!
E[rnest].H.Shepard's decorations played as much a part in Pooh's widespread appeal as Milne's words. Following in his footsteps is no mean feat, but Mark Burgess's new illustrations capture the charm and humour of these stories beautifully. This book is a delightfully entertaining sequel to one of the classics of children's literature. David Benedictus brought Winnie-the-Pooh to life in his audio dramatisations starring Dame Judi Dench,Stephen Fry and Jane Horrocks. He published his first novel at 22,and saw his second adapted for film by Francis Ford Coppola. Mark Burgess has been an illustrator of children's books for over twenty years. He studied Fine Art at the Slade School in London. He then worked for a short time at London Zoo and in a library in Cambridge before becoming a full-time artist and writer.Mark was also the colourist for E.H. Shepard's drawings in 'When We Were Very Young' and 'Now We Are Six'.

In the eighty years that have passed since A. A. Milne last visited the Hundred Acre Wood, millions of readers have befriended the world's best-loved Bear of Very Little Brain.
Happily, eighty years is but a day in the enchanted place at the top of the Forest, and Pooh and his friends have never stopped playing.Among the new adventures in this volume of ten stories, the animals anticipate the return of Christopher Robin, meet a new friend, and solve the mystery of some missing bees.
Capturing the spirit of A. A. Milne and Ernest H. Shepard's original work,'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood' will charm readers of all ages.
David Benedictus's stories were inspired by his familiarity with Pooh's adventures after having worked on audio book adaptations of previous Winnie-the-Pooh tales. The author of over twenty books,he has also worked as a journalist, director, and teacher.IN writing 'Return to the Hundred Acre Wood',Mr. Benedictus hopes to "both complement and maintain Milne's idea that whatever happens,a little boy and his Bear will always be playing."
Mark Burgess has been illustrating children's books for many years and has drawn countless classic characters, including Paddington Bear and Winnie-the- Pooh.He spends his free time reading, gardening, and walking in the woods near his home in south-west England, where he lives with his wife and cat.Mr. Burgess illustrated this sequel in the style of E. H. Shepard with the approval of Mr. Shepard's estate.
A. A. Milne (1882-1956) was a playwright and a journalist as well as a poet and storyteller.Inspired by his son, Christopher Robin,Milne published his first stories about Pooh in 1926.An instant success,Milne's children's books have since sold millions of copies and have been translated into fifty languages.
Ernest.H. Shepard (1879-1976) gained renown as a cartoonist and illustrator. His witty and loving illustrations of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends have become an inseparable part of the Pooh stories.

This is the first reassessment in more than a quarter of a century of one of the most brilliant and fascinating figures in American literature - the novelist born in
1879, six years after the war he memorialised in his universally acclaimed The Red Badge of Courage and dead from tuberculosis aged 28.
Recounting Crane's brief life,Benfey identifies a curious pattern:Crane tried to live what he had already written.Barely
22 when he wrote Red Badge,he later became
the leading war correspondent of his time
- in order to see, he told Joseph Conrad, whether Red Badge was 'alright'.He wrote Maggie - A Girl of the Streets more out of curiousity than knowledge;a few years later he took as his common-law wife the madam of a Jacksonville whorehouse. He made
a life with her in England, where their circle of friends included CONRAD,Henry JAMES,Ford Maddox FORD and H.G.WELLS.

who cherish East Anglia's distinctive traditions and value the study of its social history, for this book follows closely the growth and decline of the East Coast ports and traces the development of the many coastal trades which flourished in those years.Pages filled with yarns and anecdotes that bring the places and people alive and recall the age when wrecks were counted by the hundred and smugglers and privateers plied their dangerous trades on land and sea.The easy flowing narrative and numerous complementary illustrations make this book a unique readable record of an era, when the life of the waterside ebbed and flowed with each tide and the steamship and the railway had not yet stripped the sea of sail.

Beningfield is one of the country's finest and best-loved painters of the English landscape. His campaigning for the English countryside encompasses a passionate concern for the conservation of our villages.Encircled by its rural landscape, the ideal village is made of local materials, with local people and local occupations in mind. But all too often villages no longer reflect their location. For this book, the author went in search of traditional village life, finding special places with interesting architecture, wildlife and country characters. Here he records in words and pictures what he found.Cottages, people, shops,windmills,oast-houses,orchards, churches, ponds - all are delightfully recorded here. And in his quest for the perfect village there were many moments of pure magic:a cricket match, washing on the line in a cottage garden, the laying of a hedge, the discovery of an old-fashioned post office or a surprisingly attractive little garden. The result is a wonderfully evocative and beautiful celebration of the English village in all its glory.
Gordon Beningfield began his career as an eccliastical artist, but, since the early 1960's,he has built a reputation as a painter of the countryside, and his work has in recent years reached wide audiences through his appearance on television.
Beningfield's first book,'Beningfield's Butterflies',was published in 1978 and paved the way for the very popular
'Beningfield's Countryside'(1980),which has appeared in 5 languages,with over 100,000 copies in print.His third book,
'Hardy Country',in 1983 was celebrated by major exhibitions in both Dorchester and London, and a film has been made about the painting of the pictures for it.He has
designed two sets of stamps for the British Post office, showing butterflies (1981) and other insects (issued in 1985).

In this book Gordon Beningfield celebrates a classic countryside that was once typical of much of England but is increasingly falling victim to modern intensive farming and the spread of urbanization.Gordon Beningfield's world is centred on the gentle, rural landscapes of Hertfordshire and the open downs and lush valleys of Dorset.
Gordon Beningfield is almost unique
among artists who have made a reputation painting wildlife since he is also a perceptive and gifted landscape painter. 'Beningfield's Countryside' combines intimate close-ups of animals and flowers with broad landscapes that provide a setting and at the same time convey a powerful feeling for the special qualities of English scenery. In these fine pictures, Beningfield's talent as a painter of
landscapes is displayed to the general public for the first time.
In his text, his sketches and his exquisitely detailed watercolours and oil paintings Beningfield again shows himself to be a skilled and observant naturalist.'Beningfield's Countryside' is irresistable in its evocation of the small-scale pleasures of the country - here a pile of nuts neatly opened by a dormouse, there a fox basking only half asleep in a shaft of sunlight or a yellowhammer singing boldly from the top of a hawthorn bush.
In all,'Beningfield's Countryside' is a moving visual tribute to a countryside that is universally loved.
His last exhibition (at that time, then 1980) was in 1978 and was devoted to butterflies, and the pictures in it formed the basis of the successful book, 'Beningfield's Butterflies' (see my book ID rja577015 - PENGUIN,1981,Qrto wraps - with extra additional illustrations than the prior Chatto/Windus,1978,hardback.) The pictures in this book coincide with his largest show/exhibition of his work.

Britain's woodlands are cherished by everyone who loves the countryside and values its richness.Few people who have been lucky enough to see a bluebell wood in spring will forget this magical experience, and the splendour of an ancient oakwood is a truly impressive sight. Sadly, only a fraction of this country's once extensive forests, woods and coppices remain, and all too few of them are properly managed.Almost nothing has survived of the variety of crafts and industries that they once supported. But the pockets of woodland that remain harbour some of our most attractive animals and plants,as this beautiful book shows.
Gordon Beningfield has sought out some of the quiet corners where English woodland continues to flourish in all its glory, and reminds us of the delights to be found in this most precious part of our natural heritage. Here are the pollarded beeches, the old oak trees with their enormous gnarled trunks, the primroses on mossy banks and the delicate wood anemones scattered across the woodland floor.Gordon Beningfield also celebrates the wildlife of the woods: tawny owls, woodpeckers, foxes and fallow deer, and - a Beningfield speciality, this - the woodland butterflies. There is room, too, for the creatures that are not wholly wood- dwelling but depend on woodland for sustenance, cover or a place to raise their young. In this glorious collection of watercolours and sketches, all produced specially for this book,Beningfield once again delights us both with his skill as an artist and with his countryman's eye for detail.
Gordon Beningfield began his career as an eccliastical artist, but, since the early 1960's,he has built a reputation as a painter of the countryside, and his work has in recent years reached wide audiences through his appearance on television.
