Ian Harrad has been in the Foreign Office. He has been a writer. Now he has a rich wife,a house in Hampstead and an undemanding position in television. When his wife leaves him,he is amazed. But after
all,he reflects, his happiness does not depend on her or his children.Bachelor pleasures come easily: girls, the younger and sexier the better; travel, the ultimate in non-responsibility;and above all, food,
an obsession encouraged by London's success world.Life,so perfectly organized,
moves faster and faster - smart dinner parties, nightclubs,a trip to Venice,a stay in a fashionable health hydro - until
it reaches a crisis. It is easier to get on the Big Dipper than to get off . . .
After her vivid New York novel,'All Things Nice',Rachel Billington takes a wryly humorous and penetrating look at London's media people. Her remarkable insight into the male mind, her taut construction and the wit and clarity of her style make this an arresting and original novel. This is her 2nd novel.See also rja321,and rja1439.

children, work, divorce and tragedy, during a period that saw dramatic change in the lives and hopes of women everywhere.

She roars through life,never looking
before she leaps, sometimes onto rocks.Nina is English and middle-class,the shy, thoughtful daughter of an army officer. She marries her girlhood love and has two children before realising how unfulfilled she is,and that her true passion is to paint.Fay is a Jewish-American,the granddaughter of a holocaust survivor.

The setting of Maeve Binchy's new novel is a small Irish seaside town in the 50's and 60's.
There two very different children are growing up,shouting their heart's desires into the echo cave, praying that their destiny will lead them far away from the town in which they live.Castlebay,in winter empty and grey with wind and sea spray, becomes all bustle and colour in the
gaudy days of summer - and Tom O'Brien's shop on the edge of the cliff besieged by holidaymakers.
One of those children with ambitions to leave Castlebay is Clare,Tom O'Brien's younger daughter.A favourite with the local schoolteacher, she wins a scholarship
to University College,Dublin and seems all
set for a path of academic glory. The other
child dreaming of escape is David Power,
the doctor's son, also bound for Dublin University, and probably a dazzling future as a specialist.
The paths of these two characters are destined to criss-cross in a quite unforeseen way,and eventually both roads will lead back to Castlebay. The end of this long drama of ambition, betrayal and love is played out in the seaside town where it began, against a backdrop of whispered family gossip and the tangled skein of past friendships.

The struggle waged by women for emancipation from the tyranny of convention has been a constant theme over the centuries.'Ministering Angels' examines a central part of this theme; it is a complete history of the first profession that not only opened its doors to women, but was also largely created by them.
Starting as far back as medieval times, with the role of nuns as nurses in feudal communities, the book contains fascinating stories of courage and single-minded determination, epitomised in very different ways by such figures as Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell. It charts the fight the first women nurses waged against bigotry and prejudice, and how they overcame the popular notion of a nurse as a gin-soaked Mrs Gamp, both in fact and in the fictional portrait of Charles Dickens. It tells the stories of the volunteer nurses of the two world wars,an experience which gave middle-class women in particular their first taste of working life.International in scope,it shows in essence a social revolution in action, which has had a profound effect on the place that women hold in the world of today.

Val Meers was eighteen. Her father was dead, and her mother was a tramp. The only thing Val wanted from life was kicks - and the fastest way to get them was to join a gang. After all, what did she have to lose?
So she joined the Panther Debs, the toughest girl gang in Brooklyn. The Panthers taught her all the tricks they knew - how to fight, steal and make love to teenage hoods.
Now Val really belonged. She didn't care what anybody said.Alone she was nothing. With the gang she was the greatest.
And that's all that mattered - until the day the gang pushed her too far. Then she learned she had to stand alone or face a vengeance that would destroy her.
The pulp novel genre which peaked in popularity in the 1950s - it's ingredients of hard-boiled detective, sultry blondes, women as sex-kittens,juvenile delinquents, murdered husbands et al - and of course, the lurid cover art - had little of literary merit.A term used to describe trashy story magazines produced on cheap, rough paper and by the 1930s,when their first paperbacks appeared,it was synonymous with fast-paced thrillers of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.
Paper shortages during and after WW2 meant both the banning of US pulp imports and with paper rationing and conservation of that and other materials, pulping was actively encouraged,so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing, opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced.Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster, exhibiting several faults, blemishes, foxing /spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition.

Visually, the external appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for it’s brightnesss, cleanliness and lack of detracting faults.
On 3 April 2020, Kate Bingham was told that the likelihood of any Covid-19 vaccine working was 15% at best. But on 8 December 2020, the first NHS patient received a vaccine. Now over 141 million vaccine doses have been administered. What lies behind this staggering success story? Lockdowns are lifted and we can finally see a way to live with Covid.
From a small cottage, Bingham juggled vaccine suppliers, Whitehall, the media circus and her daughters exams.Political manoeuvring, miscommunications and administrative meddling nearly jeopardised the project. But perseverance paid off: the overwhelming majority of Britons are fully vaccinated.
This is an unmissable insider view into how the Vaccine Taskforce beat the odds and pulled off the biggest vaccination campaign in Britains history.
How Covid-19 vaccines went from the laboratory to people's arms - the inside story of an extraordinary national campaign against all odds.

Special Operations Executive was formed by Winston Churchill in 1940 'to set Europe ablaze'.In SOE women were trained to handle guns and explosives, work undercover, endure interrogation by the Gestapo, and use complex codes. This is the story of ten remarkable women who were dropped in occupied territories to work as secret agents.
Once in enemy territory, theirs was the most dangerous war of all, leading an apparently normal civilian life but in constant danger of arrest. They organised dropping grounds for arms and explosives destined for the Resistance, helped operate escape lines for airmen who had been shot down over Europe, and provided Allied Command with vital intelligence.
SOE women agents came from all walks of life: from the dazzling Polish Countess Krystyna Skarbek (alias Christine Granville) and the American Virginia Hall, from a rich Baltimore family,to Marguerite Knight,a secretary in Walthamstow.
Petite Lise de Baissac lived next to
Gestapo headquarters in Poitiers playing the part of a quiet widow, whilst twenty-year-old student Paola Del Din was sent to find a way through the German front line in Florence.Hot tempered Paddy (Maureen) O'Sullivan deflected a German officer from examining her suitcase by making a date with him and Alex d'Unienville feigned madness when captured.
The stories of these women agents -some famous, some virtually unknown -are told with the help of extensive new archive material.Their exploits form a new chapter of heroism in the history of warfare matched only by their determination,
resourcefulness and ability to stay cool in the face of extreme danger.

The Special Operations Executive was formed by Winston Churchill in 1940 'to set Europe ablaze'.In SOE women were trained to handle guns and explosives, work undercover, endure interrogation by the Gestapo, and use complex codes.
SOE women agents came from all walks of life: from the dazzling Polish Countess Krystyna SkarbeK (alias Christine Granville) and the American Virginia Hall, from a rich Baltimore family,to Marguerite Knight,a secretary in Walthamstow.Petite Lise de Baissac lived next to Gestapo headquarters in Poitires playing the part of a quiet widow, whilst twenty-year-old student Paola Del Din was sent to find a way through the German front line in Florence.Hot-tempered Paddy O'Sullivan deflected a German officer from examining her suitcase by making a date with him and Alex d'Unieville feigned madness when captured.
The stories of these women agents - some famous, some virtually unknown - are told with the help of extemsive new archive material.Their exploits form a new chapter of heroism in the history of warfare matched only by their determination, resourcefulness and ability to stay cool in the face of extreme danger.
Marcus Binney grew up hearing stories of Special Forces from his father, stepfather and especially from his mother, who served with the FANYs (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry) in which almost all SOE women agents were enlisted.

See rja27857 for 'White Cap and Bails' (subject SIGNED autobiography) and also rja25347 - for subject's another, but different biography.
'Dickie Bird's Britain' is about people and events and places that make Dickie unashamedly proud to be British. On a Bank Holiday weekend he is delighted to be on Scarborough sands,or at York races, but he is as much in his element discussing poultry rearing with the Duchess of Devonshire.
Welsh male voice choirs and Highland caber tossers are all grist to his mill,as much as pigeon racing and monster vegetable competitions.
Yet a remote village church can always lure him in,if it's open.
Dickie refreshes his memory by visiting Hambledon, the cradle of cricket, and where the MCC ladies are now included in the fixture list; then it's on to the arena that gives him the most pleasure of all,to Lord's,the mecca of cricket.
Dickie Bird earned the respect of everyone involved in the cricket world and has become a household name. However, 'Dickie Bird's Britain' will appeal not only to cricket lovers, but to anyone who enjoys an uplifting,heart-warming read.

In this sequel to his autobiography (see my book ID rja455413 - also SIGNED by him),Dickie takes a humorous, nostalgic look at the county clubs and the Test match arenas which have created such dramas in his life and provided him with so many friends.
Prompted by reference to his astounding collection of memorabilia,'White Cap and Bails' has given Dickie the opportunity to reflect on the ambience of the great cricket grounds. He describes the very special behind-the-scenes characters who work as well as play for the clubs and provide the life-blood of the game.Dickie still has time to make challenging points about the future of the game and to give his opinion on the great players and matches, but all in all this is an infectious, anecdotal, roundabout ride through the world of cricket. Turning his attention, for instance,to Derby's Chesterfield ground with its beautiful lake, Dickie remembers Laurie Johnston. In a county match he was out first ball in the first innings, and out first ball in the second innings. As he made his lonely way back to the pavilion he was followed by a pair of ducks from the lake.Dickie first takes his readers round the county grounds before flying them off to the great clubs in Australia,New Zealand, the West Indies,South Africa and the other major cricket playing countries. He tells his hilarious stories in his unique style, and the end result is a total involvement in Dickie's wonderful world.
Born in Barnsley in 1933,the son of a miner, Dickie Bird was signed up to play for Yorkshire at the age of nineteen. He played on the county circuit for the next thirteen years, six of them for Leicestershire, but it is as an umpire that he has become so well known. He umpired first-class cricket for thirty years and achieved every honour it is possible to achieve. In 1996 he was voted Yorkshireman of the Year.A qualified MCC advanced cricket coach,Dickie is an honorary life member of the MCC,Yorkshire CCC and Leicestshire CCC.He was awarded the MBE in 1986.The announcement that he would umpire his final Test at Lord's in June 1996, signalled the end of an international career which has won him worldwide affection as the finest umpire in cricket history.

UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG++/VG-.[This dw/dj issued as a replacement for the original full-colour dw/dj,supplies of which are now exhausted (then 1955).] No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip (25/-) to dw/dj.A nondescript, glassine, pale green+white typographically designed dw/dj. Basically a pale green background with white lower-case lettering of 'batsfordbooks' continously repeated in horizontal lines from left to right; and from top to bottom of dw/dj. Negligible shelf-wear to lower edges with some minimal chipping with reciprocal loss to foot of dw/dj's spine/backstrip.Top edges have borne the majority of the creasing, with several tiny closed tears and snicks - with no significant loss - if any at all incurred.Upper panel of dw/dj has a small tear with crease/fold - but no loss - towards the front, right edge, with bright, clean front inner flap with publisher's blurb. Spine/backstrip of dw/dj slightly darkened - as usual/normal.Rear panel of dw/dj slightly grubbed and a clean, blank, rear inner flap.Publisher's bright and generally clean, sharp-cornered,original green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked cricketing motif (crossed cricket bats behind cricket stumps with a cricket ball in front of,and at foot of stumps) centrally of upper third of front board; slightly oxidised lettering to spine/backstrip with some of the edges minimally sunned; some minimal mottling (damp?) effect to rear board's lower edge and a small water(?) stain/mark to foot of spine/backstrip too. Both front+rear pastedowns near pristine and unmarked.Top edges coloured green with some light fading,fore-edges lightly aged and very lightly, sporadically foxed/spotted; contents generally bright and clean, tight and solidly bound with some noticeable but minimal,foxing/spotting to pages of both the first and last signatures (16pp in each) of the book; book's other signatures appear virtually unspotted and foxing-free.UK, slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-144pp [paginated] includes minimally foxed/spotted contents list/ table, similar foxing to the following:- author's acknowledgements, illus list/table and separator page of author's introductory essay (comprising of 6 chapters),a mixture of 35 cricketing-related plates/illustrations - 17 in colour, Diana Rait Kerr's notes on the b/w+colour illustrations, and an index (with aforementioned spotting/foxing to pages of same).Plus,[unpaginated]spotted/foxed front+rear free endpapers, foxed title page, foxed colour frntis (a painting of W. G. Grace at stumps,by Archibald Stuart-Wortley,1890) and lightly spotted/foxed title page.Described hard but fairly and honestly - is far better than it reads or sounds - particularly considering that the (uncommon) presence of the dw/dj has protected the book possibly, from far more serious, multiple faults/damage!
The Game of Cricket has as long a lineage, and has been as widely celebrated both by writers and by artists,as any the world has known.
For cricket, with its traditions, its ritual and its subtlety,is outstandingly a connoisseur's game.To foreigners it is incomprehensible, but to its devotees, whether Indian,Australian,South African, West Indian or English,it inspires an affection which continues long after active playing days are over.
Sir Norman Birkett is known as one of cricket's most discriminating enthusiasts. In this book he has written an account of the game which is compounded equally of his own experience as a player and as a spectator, and of his knowledge of cricketing history. To Sir Norman Birkett's essay has been added as fine a collection of historic cricket pictures as have ever illustrated a book on the game.In date, these illustrations range from the 18thC pictures of Paul Sandby and Francis Hayman to a contemporary painting of Lord's by Charles Cundall. Some 17 are reproduced in colour and among them are the cream of the collection of the late Sir Jeremiah Colman.Miss Diana Rait Kerr,Librarian to the M.C.C.,has been actively engaged both in the selection of these illustrations and in writing the notes on them which are printed in this book.
Here,it will be generally agreed,is an addition of permanent value to the long and illustrious literature of the Game of Cricket.

On 16 March 1244 more than 200 Cathar 'Perfects' - heretics in the eyes of the Catholic Church - were taken from the castle of Montsegur in the foothills of the Pyrenees and burned alive in the fields below. But they went to their deaths willingly, knowing that their ultimate secret - the Treasure of Montsegur - was safe, smuggled out of the castle by four of their number.
For 700 years the Cathars' secret resisted all attempts to unravel it and fuelled the bizarre speculations of occultists and neo-Cathars.Now, as a result of painstaking scholarly analysis, the true nature of the 'Treasure of Montsegur' is revealed and the real significance of the Cathars themselves in the development of western religious thought is finally made clear.
'The Treasure of Montsegur' opens up completely new perspectives on the historical Cathars and on the fantasies that have grown up around them. As much a detective story as a work of scholarship,it strips away the accretions of ignorance and misconception to reveal the simple truth about the Cathars of Languedoc - a truth that,by its very nature, holds meaning for us all.

This is the first full biography of Freddie Mills, the former British,European,Empire and world light-heavyweight champion, who died tragically in 1965,apparently having committed suicide.
Few people, however, accept that a man of Mills's character and immense courage could have ended his own life, and the popular belief among his friends and thousands of fans and admirers is that he was murdered by gangsters for refusing to pay protection money for his London nightclub.
The author,Jack Birtley,has painstakingly
researched into Mills's life to unravel the mystery surrounding this much-loved sportsman - a man who made more than £100,000 during his boxing career, but who died with little more than £300 in the bank.Where did this money go? Was Mills murdered,or had mounting pressures - including a secret love affair - forced him to shoot himself?
The author has come up with a verdict which will invite the public at large to take a closer look at a man who became a living legend.[Author also wrote The Tragedy of Randolph Turpin, his first book.]

It is the early 1840's,and Cranford,a picturesque Cheshire market town of some two thousand souls,is on the verge of great change.
While it is not a complete backwater - being on the coaching route from Chester to London - Cranford is a tranquil place. None of the town's most respectable inhabitants speak of money because that subject savours of trade and, though some might be poor, they feel compelled to keep up the appearance of gentility - they call it 'Elegant Economy'. Within these polite circles,an old-fashioned code of etiquette prevails, benignly enforced by the Amazons, the ladies of a certain age who are Cranford's unofficial moral guardians. Foremost among these pillars of the community are Miss Deborah and Miss Matty Jenkyns,Miss Octavia Pole and Mrs Forrester.
But whether the townsfolk like it or not, change is on the way,and it threatens the old order. The district's most aristocratic family, represented by Lady Ludlow at Hanbury Court,is already in decline.
Meanwhile, talented men and women from the lower classes are advancing due to the education that had previously been denied them.
Scientific ideas are driving the progress - a rigour underpins new medical practices, such as those of the forward-thinking Dr Harrison; while the recent invention of the steam engine is causing the globe to shrink drastically.Close to home, the imminent arrival of the railway - which will link Cranford to the dirty industrial metropolis of Manchester only fifteen miles away, and thence to the wider world - threatens to divide the community, and to alter its character for ever.
'The Cranford Companion' is an invitation into this charming town,an opportunity to make the full acquaintance of its inhabitants, and a unique chance to witness the creativity and the camaraderie that characterised the making of the BAFTA- and Emmy-award-winning series.
Co-creators Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin, who had previously collaborated on the BBC's acclaimed adaptations of 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Wives and Daughters', document the challenges and delights of bringing Elizabeth Gaskell's much-loved Cranford stories to the screen.Perhaps the finest ensemble cast ever seen on British television was assembled - among them Judi Dench,Eileen Atkins,Francesca Annis,Michael Gambon,Philip Glenister,Julia McKenzie, Jonathan Pryce and Imelda Staunton - as well as a production team comprised of some of television's most talented creatives.
The limitations of filming on a tight budget and to a strict deadline meant that the spirit of 'Elegant Economy',so much a part of daily life in the fictional Cranford, had to be embraced in the production too.Quite apart from the logistical challenges posed by locations, costumes, machinery and rain, there were numerous sleights-of-hand to be pulled off: among them a train crash, deep snow in high summer,a candlelit operation,a magic show and a cow in pyjamas. The secrets of all these episodes, and more, are revealed within. With hundreds of photographs taken on- and off-set,illustrations by artist Posy Simmonds, contributions by the social historian Jenny Uglow, the script writer Heidi Thomas and dozens of key members of the cast and crew,'The Cranford Companion' is an unmissable treat, whether or not you have seen this enchanting series.

As a student,Bishop had published poetry, travel accounts, and fiction in periodicals in as diverse locations as Saint John, Halifax and Montreal,Boston and New York, Philadelphia, and Wolfville. Her poetry tended to be more conventional, often focusing on landscape and religious themes. Her long poem 'Tidal Years' was read at the alumni reception at the Acadia College jubilee in 1888,and three of her poems were selected for inclusion in T. H. Rand’s A Treasury of Canadian verse [1900]. In 1918,immediately after her death, there were discussions about issuing a memorial volume of her poetry and selected prose. However, only her verse appears in Poems, published privately in 1929 - this issue/edn.
Her career represents the way in which young middle-class women in Canada began to push for greater educational opportunities in the 1880s and 1890s and translated these opportunities into national and international travel, mobility in their careers, and independence in expressing their views. While exerting a liberating educational influence on the young women whom she taught, she also succeeded in achieving some modest success as a writer. Her impatience with cant, her pride in women’s accomplishments, and her commitment to a sense of community informed both her writing and her teaching.[attribn. In 2018 the RAF is one hundred years old.In his new book (then 2017),destined to be a classic, Patrick Bishop examines the high point of its existence - the Second World War,when the Air Force saved the nation from defeat then led the advance to victory.
Air warfare was a terrible novelty of the modern age, requiring a new military outlook. From the beginning, the RAF's identity set it apart from the traditional services. It was innovative, flexible and comparatively meritocratic, advancing the quasi-revolutionary idea that competence was more important than background.
The Air Force went into the war with inadequate machines, training and tactics, and the early phase was littered with setbacks and debacles. Then,in the summer of 1940,in full view of the population,Fighter Command won one of the decisive battles of the struggle.Thereafter the RAF was gilded with an aura of success that never tarnished, going on to make a vital contribution to Allied victory in all theatres.
Drawing from diaries, letters, memoirs and interviews,'Air Force Blue' captures the nature of combat in the skies over the corrugated wastes of the Atlantic, the sands of the Western Desert and the jungles of Burma. It also brings to life the intensely lived dramas, romances, friendships and fun that were as important a part of the experience as the fighting. 'Air Force Blue' portrays the spirit of the RAF - its heart and soul - during its finest hours. It is essential reading for the millions in Britain and the Commonwealth whose loved ones served, and for anyone who wants to understand the Second World War.

From the bestselling author of 'Fighter Boys' and 'Bomber Boys','Battle of Britain' is a magesterial and stunningly illustrated account of a defining episode in modern British history: the epic struggle of RAF Fighter Command with the Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940.
From the shock of defeat and evacuation from Dunkirk in May/June 1940 to Fighter Command's assertion of superiority over the Luftwaffe in mid-September of that year,Patrick Bishop charts the key staging-posts of Britain's fight for national survival. The day-to-day progress of the battle - its dogfights, its heroes and victims, its impact on flyers and civilians alike (from the Luftwaffe's 'Black Thursday' of 15 August,to the opening day of 'the Blitz' on 7 September) - is evoked in a richly compelling and moving narrative.Alongside the chronological account,an array of feature panels provides a wealth of detailed information on aspects of the battle as diverse as radar and air-raid protection, high-octane fuel and 'shadow' factories, the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and the contribution of the Polish and Czech
squadrons.Eye-witness descriptions,
accounts and extracts fron diaries and journals evoke the often horrific reality of war in the air, while 'pilot profiles' tell the human stories behind such celebrated 'aces' as Douglas Bader,'Paddy' Finucane and 'Ginger' Lacey.
Among the volume's 250 images are numerous contemporary photographs of planes, pilots and aerial combat, authentic pages from pilots' logbooks, public information posters and leaflets, paintings by celebrated war artists such as Paul Nash and Norman Wilkinson, and maps locating Fighter Command groups and sectors and the air fleets of the Luftwaffe.A full-colour appendix anatomizes the aircraft that won - and lost - the Battle of Britain, including the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Messerschmitt 109.
As enthrallingly written as it is sumptuously presented,'Battle of Britain' is the definitive account of 20thC Britain's 'finest hour' from a master of popular historical narrative. No one with an interest in the history of WW2 or of modern Britain will wish to be without it.

In 'Fighter Boys' Patrick Bishop brought to life the pilots who flew Spitfires and Hurricanes in the summer of 1940.Their skill and bravery decided the Battle of Britain, saved the nation from invasion and
created conditions for Hitler's defeat.
In 'Bomber Boys',Bishop tells a different
but equally fascinating story. The 125,000 men from all over the world who passed through Bomber Command during the Second World War were engaged in a form of warfare that had never been implemented before and never would be again.Between 1940 and 1945 they flew continuously, stopping only when weather conditions made operations impossible. For much of that time they were the only fighters capable of attacking Germany in its own territory.
There was nothing romantic about their struggle.Often barely out of boyhood, they
lived on bleak bases, flying at night on long,nerve-racking missions that often ended in death. The odds of surviving were stacked heavily against them.In all,
55,000 were killed, counting for nearly one in ten of all British and Commonwealth
dead.Despite these sacrifices, the Bomber Boys have remained on the edges of our collective memory.
When the fighting stopped, they became something of a political embarrassment.
Their actions have been the subject of a controversy that continues to the present,
obscuring not only the losses they suffered but also the courage, comradeship and fortitude with which they fought. In this powerful and moving work of history, Patrick Bishop brilliantly captures the character, feelings and motivations of the
bomber crews and pays tribute to their heroism and determination. They were among the best of their generation, who were called on to carry out one of the grimmest
duties of the Second World War.'Bomber Boys' brilliantly restores these men to their rightful place in our consciousness.

Tirpitz was the pride of Hitler's navy, the largest and most powerful battleship in Europe. To Churchill she was 'the Beast',a menace to Britain's supply lines and a threat to the convoys sustaining Stalin's armies. To those who sailed in her she seemed impregnable,an 'Iron Castle' that could withstand any bomb or torpedo. Tirpitz rarely fired her monster guns. She did not need to.Her mere presence in the fjords of Norway kept a large part of the British Fleet tied to home waters guarding against a breakout. In the summer of 1942, fear that Tirpitz was at sea led the Admiralty to recall ships escorting a convoy to Russia, leaving it virtually undefended. In an episode that became one of the darkest chapters of the war at sea,24 of 35 merchantmen were sunk.
Tirpitz haunted the imagination of the men directing Britain's war.The prospect that she might set up base on the French Atlantic coast led to the raid on St Nazaire, one of the most dramatic actions of the war.Plan after plan was hatched to send her to the bottom. From the first days, she was subjected to air attack but it was soon clear the RAF did not have the bombs to sink her.Nor were the torpedoes of the Fleet Air Arm any more effective. The failures forced attention onto unorthodox weapons. In 1942 'human torpedo' teams launched a high-risk operation that ended in gallant failure. The following year, midget submarines carried out a daring and costly attack that left Tirpitz crippled, but only temporarily.
In the end it was Bomber Command, led by one of Britain's most remarkable but least-known war heroes, who finished her off.In the autumn of 1944,Wing Commander Janes 'Willie' Tait,a man of outstanding courage and modesty, led Lancasters from 617 Squadron - the famous 'Dambusters' - and 9 Squadron on a series of raids that stretched endurance, skill and bravery to the limit. It ended with the destruction of the battleship that had come to symbolise the hubris of Hitler's Germany.
Full of colour, insight and drama,'Target Tirpitz' is Second World War storytelling at is best.

(Helena Morley),and 3 chapters/parts covering the years of 1893/4/5.
This is a true diary, kept by a girl between the ages of twelve and fifteen,in
a provincial diamond-mining town called Diamantina, the highest town in Brazil, during the years 1893 and 1895.The author,
who is half-English is now seventy-six (then 1958).
When Elizabeth Bishop - the translator of
this book - first went to Brazil in 1952 and asked friends which Brazilian books she should begin reading, this diary was most frequently mentioned. It had been published privately in a small edition in 1942.Georges Bernanos, who was living in Brazil in exile, discovered it (see his letter on the front of the dw/dj) and gave away many copies. Its reputation began to spread in literary circles, new editions
followed, and now it is a classic.
As the translator says "Much of it could have happened in any small provincial town
or village, and at almost any period of history - at least before the arrival of the automobile and the moving-picture theatre.Certain pages remind me of more famous and 'literary' ones:Nausicca doing her laundry on the beach, possibly with the
help of her freed slaves;bits from Chaucer; Wordsworth's poetical children and country people . . . ." And Miss Bishop justly describes one aspect of the Diary as "notes for an unwritten,
Brazilian, feminine version of Tom Sawyer and Nigger Jim."
Though preceded by the US,NY,Farrar Straus & Cudahy 1957 edn (4,000 copies), this UK edn is the rarer, only 1500 being published.

This book tells the story of the last 100 years [then 1989] - the most exciting, innovative, invigorating century of modern times. The momentous events described in these pages were unimaginable in 1890 when Queen Victoria reigned as the doyen of European Royal Families.Britain was the foremost world power, the whole of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, women had no vote,Sundays were only for worship, children were seen and not heard - and The Illustrated London News was busy reporting it all.Respected and influential for nearly a hundred and fifty years,'The Illustrated London News' provides a unique picture of a singularly spectacular era, during which,The atom, the air, and the airwaves were mastered. The first motor car heralded a transport revolution.Television and computers widened the world's horizons in work and leisure.Mankind took a 'giant leap' on the surface of the moon.An American president was assassinated, another left office in disgrace.
With commentaries written especially for the book by experts on each period, this volume reflects these and other events in words and pictures, many of them published at the time in the pages of the magazine. Plus six feature sections ranging from the changing role of women to great sporting achievements of the century.Above all, this book conveys a fascinating perspective of Britain and the world in the 20thC, interpreted by the magazine's many eminent contributors, among them G.K. Chesterton and historian Arthur Bryant.

SOLDIER, ESCAPER, SPYMASTER, POLITICIAN - Airey Neave was assassinated in the House of Commons car park in 1979.Forty years after his death, Patrick Bishop's lively, action-packed biography examines the life, heroic war and death of one of Britain's most remarkable 20th century figures.
Airey Neave was one of the most extraordinary figures of his generation. Taken prisoner during WW2,he was the first British officer to escape from Colditz and using the code name 'Saturday' became a key figure in the IS9 escape and evasion organisation which spirited hundreds of Allied airmen and soldiers out of Occupied Europe.
A lawyer by training,he served the indictments on the Nazi leaders at the Nuremburg war trials. An ardent Cold War warrior,he was mixed up in several of the great spy scandals of the period. Most people might consider these achievements enough for a single career, but he went on to become the man who made Margaret Thatcher, mounting a brilliantly manipulative campaign in the 1975 Tory leadership to bring her to power.
And yet his death is as fascinating as his remarkable life.On Friday,30 March 1979,a bomb planted beneath his car exploded while he was driving up the ramp of the House of Commons underground car park, killing him instantly. The murder was claimed by the breakaway Irish Republican group, the INLA. His killers have never been identified.
Patrick Bishop's new book, published to mark the 40th anniversary of his death,is a lively and concise biography of this remarkable man.It answers the question of who killed him and why their identities have been hidden for so long and is written with the support of the Neave family.

Despite their success in the invasion of Poland, the Waffen-SS still had something to prove as a fighting organization when they arrived in the West for the attack on th Low countries.'SS: Hell on the Western Front' describes in vivid detail the explots of the Waffen-SS in Western Europe from 1940 to 1945.
Illustrated with rare action photographs, the book begins with the formation of the Waffen-SS and its growth and development into a combat arm.The striking success of 1940 is examined,as the SS troopers swept all opposition before them,as is the darker side of the organization, with the first atrocities committed against Allied prisoners. After the German victory, Himmler used the new conquered territories as a fertile recruiting ground for the 'war against Communism'.As the preparations for the invasion od the Soviet Union advanced,Hitler was distracted by the crisis in the Balkans, where the Waffen-SS added to their growing reputation, capturing Belgrade and driving the Allied troops out of Greece.By 1944 the Waffen-SS were back in France in numbers,in readiness to repel the expected Allied invasion. After the loss of Normandy, the Waffen-SS fought hard at Arnhem and in the Ardennes offensive, winning respect from the Allied troops that faced them.
'SS: Hell on the Western Front' features the actions and atrocities of such famous Waffen-SS divisions as the Liebstandarte Adolf Hitler,Das Reich,Hitlerjugend and Totenkopf, and provides an insignt into how these ideologically and motivated uniyts consistently outfought the Allies even when seriously disadvantaged due to lack of fuel or air support.'SS: Hell on the Western Front' is a thorough study of the Waffen-SS in the western theatre.

An important addition to any SF enthusiast's shelf, and essential reading for a newcomer to the genre.
In a clearing of the great forest of the planet Bosk Veld,a strange,ape-like species of alien, the Asadi, act out their almost-incomprehensible rituals, rainbow eyes flashing, spinning like pinwheels.Egon Chaney,in his athropological study,'Death and Designation Among the Asadi' has shown how their life-style has apparently degenerated from a level of complex technological sophistication and devolved to a primal simplicity.Long after his disappearance in the forest his daughter, Elegy Cather, comes to Bosk Veld to carry on his studies of the Asadi where he left off. With her is an intelligent ape, Kretzoi, physically adapted to resemble the aliens.Together with Thomas Benedict, Chaney's old partner,Elegy begins to unravel the enigma of the asadi. As Kretzoi insinuates himself into their rituals,so we are drawn into what is perhaps the most convincing portrayal of the alien yet.

The Royal Air Force is synonymous with its heroic achievements in the summer of 1940, when Winston Churchill's 'famous few' - the Hurricane and Spitfire pilots of RAF Fighter Command - held Goering's
Luftwaffe at bay in the Battle of Britain, thereby changing the course of the war.For much of the twentieth century, warplanes were fixed in the world's imagination,a symbol of the perils and excitements of the modern era.But within the space of a hundred years, military aviation has morphed from the exotic to the mundane. An activity which was charged with danger - the domain of the daring - is now carried out by computers and unpiloted drones.
Aviators have always seemed different from soldiers and sailors - more adventurous, questing and imaginative. In both world wars air aces dominated each side's propaganda, capturing hearts and dreams.Writing with the verve, passion and the sheer narrative aplomb familiar to many thousands of readers from his bestselling Second World War aerial histories,'Fighter Boys' and 'Bomber Boys' - see book ID rja32298, Patrick Bishop's 'WINGS' is a rich and compelling account of military flying from its heroic early days to the present.

On July 4,1862,Charles Dodgson took
his neighbour Alice Liddell on a picnic and told her a story that later became a book called 'Alice's adventures in Wonderland' (which he published under the name Lewis Carroll).Mr Dodgson taught mathematics at Christ Church at Oxford University in England. He was a shy man,but he always felt comfortable with children, whom he got to know by photographing them.
Alice was the child friend he liked best of all.Her favourite words were
"Let's pretend",so they were a good match. 'The Other Alice' lets readers imagine what it must have been like to be a child in Victorian England and to know a man as unusual as Mr Dodgson. And anyone who has read
'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' will find lots of things that are familiar in Alice's world.
Illustrated with photographs by Mr. Dodgson and full-colour paintings by the illustrator Inga-Karin Eriksson,'The Other Alice' also offers instructions for some of Mr. Dodgson's favourite games, including how to make a hankerchief rabbit and
how to count with cakes.

The King Arthur Discoveries are explosive and final, made by careful industrial analysis techniques, skilful planning and superslick organisation.A technique seemingly never used by conventional historians and scholars.By combining a careful study of manuscripts, maps, antiquarian books, documents, inscribed stones and other writings - with personal dedication, persistence and fieldwork throughout the UK and much of Europe, WILSON and BLACKETT have unravelled the enigmatic mystery - all facts uncanny in their accuracy - backed by overwhelming evidence.

Helen Waddell was one of the most sensitive and scholarly best-selling authors of the 1920's and 1930's.'Peter Abelard' has been reprinted over thirty times in its original edition,as well as having been translated into nine European languages.A recent adaptation has also had a record-breaking run on the stage (then 1973).But before writing what turned out to be her most popular work, she had already been made famous by 'The Wandering Scholar',for which the critical acclaim is quoted in this book.
Her other books on the Middle Ages include 'Mediaeval Latin Lyrics','The Desert Fathers',and 'Beasts and Saints'. She was born in 1889,the youngest of ten children of an Ulster Presbyterian minister,a pioneer missionary in Manchuria and Japan, 'the Vicar of Wakefield turned Chinese Scholar',as she later described him.Her mother died when she was two,but her career at school and later at Queen's University, Belfast and Somerville College,Oxford, was a series of triumphs.
In 1934 her books had made her comfortably off,and when her London flat was pulled down, she made what proved the fatal mistake of buying a large, damp and unwieldly house in Primrose Hill Road,to accomodate 'all her beloved family and still have rooms to spare'.Even before it was badly damaged in the Blitz,it was to be a constant source of trouble and expense, and a disastrous distraction from the work that was the mainspring of her life.
Throughout the war years she continued her work both for Constable (UK publisher),and the magazine 'The Nineteenth Century',while being gradually worn out by constant major domestic difficulties, and the incessant personal demands that were made on her.In 1947 she gave the eighth W.P. Ker Memorial Lecture at Glasgow, reprinted here, but ill-health prevented any other major work up till her death in 1965.Her most illustrious admirers included professors such as George Saintsbury, J.W. Mackail,Gilbert Murray and Sir Frederick Pollock; among poets,Yeats, Walter de la Mare and Siegfried Sassoon; public men like Stanley Baldwin and Lord Londonderry; and a wide range of authors, among them Max Beerbohm,Virginia Woolf,Enid Starkie,Rose Macaulay,Charles Morgan and David Cecil.
The author and her brother were among Helen Waddell's closest friends.

In February 1985,fifty years after T. E. Lawrence was killed in a motor bicycle accident in Dorset,Captain Charles Blackmore and three others of the Royal Green Jackets Regiment set out to retrace Lawrence's exploits in the Arab Revolt during the First World War.
Using Lawrence's classic account,"Seven Pillars of Wisdom," as their guide, the members of this expedition spent twenty-nine days with meagre supplies and under extreme conditions, riding and walking to the source of the Lawrence legend. What the young men discovered about Lawrence and the legend was matched only by what they discovered about themselves.
Blackmore insisted on living as Lawrence did: as a true Bedouin. But it did not take long for the romantic images to vanish. Extreme heat, cold, virtually no food and little water,an inability to communicate with the Arabs and a growing realisation of their lack of preparation, all combined to turn their thoughts and fears to conspiracy.
The author bases his account on a diary he kept of the expedition. As we explore and sometimes test the legend of "Lawrence of Arabia," we begin to understand that this was a commemorative venture in the best sense: in modern Jordan it is unlikely ever to be repeated.

Visually the exterior appearance is still exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its near 20-year-old age and nature, i.e. a child's book.It is only the minimal exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher overall grading.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of other detracting faults.
Corky and Loopy are two perfectly normal girls. They like chocolate biscuits, fizzy drinks, screaming at each other and drawing. But they are also a little bit special .because they are angels. One day they visit Sid,a pavement artist. Sid is sad because he wants to take part in the big drawing competition but can't work out how the judges will ever get to see his work. Corky and Loopy decide to help and give him a very special pencil from their collection.
So begins a bright and colourful adventure from the brilliant Quentin Blake.
