UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,reprinted edn.[Originally and first published 1944,1st reprint in 1945 and then this reprinted edn in 1947,but with fresh illustrations,so 1st thus.] FINE/GOOD-. Pencilled owner name+address and bookseller's price (15/-) along top edge of front pastedown and ffe respectively.Uncommon example with a dw/dj (albeit fragile),in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942- 1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration (as attested to in this example - very thin, brittle and fragile) and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.
Original, but brittle, thin paper, colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj with edge wear, folds and creases, rubbing, chipping with some loss, several small closed tears along top+bottom edges, some splits along folds - i.e the top corners,dw/dj flaps; bottom corners with closed tears and some minimal loss ocCuring, some further small losses to both head+foot and a couple of other spots of spine/backstrip of dw/dj - dw/dj overall approx 98% present. Both panels of dw/dj with multiple creases of varying lengths and contemporary but amateurish internal, gummed paper repairs to some tears but not all - to front panel only.Despite damage to dw/dj.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,pale green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to front board and spine/backstrip,with concomitant spots to spine very minimally sunned/faded from missing portions of dw/dj.Immaculate green+white artwork by Donia Nachshen, woodland scene with ramblers and woodland flora+fauna, illustrated endpapers. Top edges coloured green,and/but with original(?) mottling,fore-edge slightly toned with minimal foxing/spotting and thumbing; contents exceptionally bright, crisp, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread - apart from my own collation. UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,reprinted edn,5-255pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,b/w line illustrated, year's month-by-month with 2 Walks stories, poems, things to do,Do you know these flowers, birds, further poems, this tree? sections and 6 nature stories - all/each with profuse b/w line illustrations throughout that text,an alphabetical list/table of illustrations, and 16 full-page,full colour illustrations/plates by Noel Hopking interspersed throughout the book.A really exceptional example with only the dw/dj detracting from it's overall appearance and grade.
A highly collected and prolific children's book illustrator, and a collectable item in Blyton's usual style and will be an important and welcome addition to the BLYTON canon.

UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[Originally published July,1945.Reverse of title page states 'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORISED ECONOMY STANDARDS.] VG++/G.Owner's child-like,blue ink handwritten name+address at top of the reverse of the front free endpaper along with a blue ink familial (parents to daughter) dedication, inscription and date [Christmas 1945] and no price-clip (6/- net.) to dw/dj.Colour,pictorial artwork by Eileen Soper, illustrated front panel of dw/dj with white-outlined blue ink lettering with contemporary brown adhesive paper repairs internally to virtually whole of the dw/dj - top +bottom edges, front inner flap fold,spine/ backstrip, with only the rear inner flap fold unrepaired - apart from width of adhesive repair to it's top+bottom edges. Those repairs causing the front panel,spine/backstrip and rear panel all to experience horizontal wrinkling/ crinkling.Further slight chipping, rubbing and creasing to top+bottom edges, some with minimal loss.Blue+black lettering to a white but grubbed spine/backstrip and a small loss at foot of same, affecting the publisher's name with only 'Hodder' visible. Both exterior vertical edges of dw/dj's inner flaps with chipping, tiny tears, rubbing and creasing, rear panel lightly grubbed. A blue ink underscored number 23 to top corner of front, inner flap of dw/dj.Top+fore-edges both slightly toned with sporadic foxing/spotting; contents remarkably bright, crisp, and clean with a very few page-edge smudges - solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation. Internally an exceptional copy/ example.Bright, crisp, clean with very minor speckling, publisher's original, fairly sharp-cornered,pale cornflower-blue cloth boards with black ink printed titles to front+spine/backstrip and clean 3-colour block (bluey-green,black and white) pictorial illustrated endpapers.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-192pp [paginated] includes 22 chapters,8 pages of 2 sets of 3-colour block (blue, black and white and red, black and white respectively,full-page illustrations - 4 of each colour,8 full page b/w line illustrations, profuse part-page b/w line illustrations interspersed throughout the text and the book - all by Eileen Soper; plus [unpaginated] b/w vignette illustration to half-title page with author's other titles checklist to it's reverse,a colour pictorial frntis, title page, and contents list/table with story's precis to it's reverse.
A highly collected and prolific children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item/ephemera in Blyton's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.Wartime issues/ editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and as such, are highly sought after.Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration - as testified by this example - and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.

Famous Five's 6th adventure. The 'Five': Julian, Dick,George,Anne and Timmy the dog in another adventure. The Five discover a secret tunnel under the sea.
They are back at Kirrin, where George's island is,the exciting island where they have already had so many thrilling adventures.

The Five go across to see him - and leave Timmy behind to guard him! But what happens to Timmy? And where is the hidden work-room? What is happening on Kirrin Island? A highly collected and prolific children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item/ephemera in Blyton's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.Wartime issues/ editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and as such, are highly sought after.Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942- 1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/ title.
Eileen [Alice] Soper (b. 1905 - d.1990) Daughter of George Soper under whom she studied and was artistically trained. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the early age of 15.She derived much of her subject matter from her father's garden,in the house her father built and which along with her sister she lived and inherited, the greater part of her life. She and her sister have maintained and preserved it as a nature sanctuary.A painter of wildlife, children, portraits and miniatures, and engraver. She was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, and elected to the RMS (Royal Society of Miniature Painters,Sculptors and Gravers) in 1972.
Eileen is most remembered for her collaboration with Enid Blyton, notably for the 'Famous Five' series (1942-1963) - though she also published her own children's books in the 1940s,and then working mainly on her wildlife illustrations from the 1950s onwards, based on the wildlife in her garden.
Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author. She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as 'The Famous Five','The Secret Seven','The Magic Faraway Tree','Malory Towers' and 'Noddy'. Born in London in 1897,Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs, gardening and the countryside. She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers.

A mystery story!
Better still,an Enid Blyton mystery story!
Yes,here it is - a new one - the third of the mystery sories about Roger,Diana, Snubby and Barney - and,of course,Miranda, the monkey, must not be forgotten, nor must Loony, the mad, black spaniel. He finds a friend in this book - a golden spaniel as mad as himself, called Loopy. They certainly add to the fun.
After 'flu, the children are sent off to Ring o' Bells Village for a holiday. The old village is full of queer stories and legends.Ringo' Bells Hall, whose bells ring out of their own accord when enemies are near - Mother Hubbard's Cottage, where Old Grandad lives, with his incredible memories - his old map of Ring o' Bells Hall with its secret passages and hidden chamber - explorations - discoveries - surprises!
This is a real Enid Blyton story, full of fun, surprise, shocks and absorbing interest.Be sure to give yourself a nice long time to read it in,because you won't be able to put it down once you've begun it!
Gilbert Dunlop (active 1949-66) A prolific children's book illustrator during the postwar period. He worked in pen or brush and ink or full colour, producing cheerful uncomplicated illustrations. He illustrated all six of Blyton's 'Barney Junior Mystery' series (1949-1959) and seven of Pamela Mainsbridge's (Family Adventure.') titles, spanning 1953 to 1964. His work was published mainly by Nelson and Collins.

[True UK first edn with the 'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STANDARDS' advice/ notification and stated 'First published in 1947' to recto of title page.Uncommon example in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.Stanley Lloyd illustrated all six titles in the series.) VG++/POOR.Neat, handwritten inked owner's name+address to recto of front free endpaper.Dw/dj heavily creased, chipped, rubbed and torn with loss and with aged/browned heavily sellotaped repaired/strengthened both internally+ externally to dw/dj's inner flaps' folds/ creases, the top front edge and brown adhesive paper tape internally to spine. Really poor, only included for completeness.Remarkably bright, crisp and clean, publisher's original vibrant orange (?) cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped black ink printed vignette and lettering which include author's facsimile signature to front bd and with stamped, printed black ink lettering to spine/backstrip and black /grey illustration by Richard Cribb,to cream eps and pastedowns. Some sellotape 'ghost' residue from sellotaped dw/dj to fore-edges of both the front pastedown and front free endpaper and the rear fore-edge of rear pastedown respectively - but no noticeable foxing/spotting.Front board/ cover with a tiny margin of minimal bleaching/sunning/fading to it's top edge, head of spine and fore-edge and corners. All corners inevitably but minisculely bumped with negligible fraying.Top edges aged/toned and lightly toned without foxing/spotting,fore-edges also aged/toned but to a lesser degree,so therefore slightly brighter and also without foxing; contents bright, tight and clean, solid and sound.Text body bright and generally clean with negligible blemishes and no foxing/ spotting - near pristine - one dog-ear reading crease to pp53/4 top corner - otherwise appears unread apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn, vpp+1-151pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,22 (XXII) chapters,8 full-page b/w illustrations by Stanley Lloyd interspersed throughout the text and the book, plus [unpaginated] half-title page with b/w illustrated frntis to it's recto, title page and publisher advert to rear. Described hard but fairly and honestly - an exceptional example - dw/dj obviously excepted - book nowhere as detracting as it reads or sounds!
The 2nd of the 6 published 'Malory Towers' books/series (1946-51).Wartime issues/editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and this makes an important and welcome addition to the Blyton/ Malory Towers schoolgirls story canon for all Blyton/Schoolgirl fiction collectors/officianados.
Here is another first-class school story by Enid Blyton. It is the second book about Malory Towers, and this time,Darrell,Sally, Gwendoline,Mary-Lou,and the girls we knew so well in the first book, have gone up to the second form. The fun they have, the tricks they play, the rows they get into, work, games, exams, all are here just as they are in real life.
It is an exciting, vivid, readable tale of boarding-school life, full of humour and character. We see Mam'zelle Dupont scolding the girls,we join Alicia in playing that terrible trick with the invisible chalk, we watch the foolish Gwendoline and the silly Daphne getting into inevitable trouble, and again we look on whilst Darrell loses her temper! It is all so real that we feel that somewhere these girls and their mistresses really do exist and live out their daily lives just as they do in the book.
The first book of the series had a tremendous welcome. This one,and the ones to come, will be as popular a school series as Enid Blyton's St. Clare books - and that is saying a good deal.
Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!

This is the third book of six of the popular series about St.Clare's.The series begins with the O'Sullivan twins entering on their first term there, and takes them and their friends, book by book, all the way up the school. The six books make a delightful series of pictures of life in a modern boarding- school from the first form to the sixth.
The same girls, and new ones too, figure in this book, which is even more exciting than its two forerunners,"The Twins at St. Clare's." and "The O'Sullivan Twins."
The book centres around the O'Sullivan Twins, and five exciting new girls - Carlotta who was once a circus-girl and tries to hide the fact,Sadie the amusing American girl,Pam the young and earnest scholar,Don't Care Bobby, whose tricks and mad behaviour enthrall the whole class, and Prudence, snob and sneak, who is heartily disliked by everyone.
W. Lindsay Cable (active 1927-51). Illustrator, mainly of girls' school stories,in pen and ink, brush and ink,and pencil.Initially, her work was rather reminiscent of fashion plates, but by the late 1940s it had become more independent in style, employing a good range of textures and shading.

UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.[The 2nd of 8 adventures and all of them were illustrated by Stuart Tresilian.] VG-. ,blue inked familial gift presentation inscrptn and date (13th April,1946) to front free endpaper and further owner (recipient) childish handwritten name/ address to top of half-title page. Negligible shelf-wear to edges and generally clean with the usual minimal soiling/grubbing seen when lacking a dw/dj for protection, publisher's original cream cloth bds with colour (black+green) pictorial decorated front bd+spine with bright, crisp, stamped black+green letters to same, all corners minimally bumped, rubbed and with some fraying and plain, generally clean, white eps - inscrptn excepted.Top edges minimally dust-soiled and minimally speckled with blemishes, fore-edges with lightest hint of ageing - very considerably much less than is usual/ normal or encountered - so bright and clean with no foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - minimal foxing/blemishing to text body and no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn,v-viiipp+1-318pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,31 chapters, profuse part-page and full-page b/w line illustrations by Stuart Tresilian throughout the text and the book, plus [unpaginated] half-title page with b/w line illustrated frntis to its verso and b/w vignette illustrated title page - both pages minimally foxed/spotted.
Author's 2nd title in this series of 8 adventures and quite scarce as a true UK,HB 1st edn - particularly with a dw/dj. Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing, and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/ title.
An important and welcome addition to the Enid Blyton adventure story canon for all Blyton fiction collectors/officianados.
