Arthur Pearson (1909) and Edward Hulton (1910).He was a bright, stylish illustrator who worked in pen and ink or pencil, often with broad expanses of shading. However his style varied according to his subject - for example, in 'Will You Come As Well' (Milne-like verses about children),he adopted a technique similar to that of E.H. Shepard. He also illustrated a further four other Blyton titles from this series: 'The Mystery of the Vanished Prince' (1951), 'The Mystery of the Strange Bundle' (1952), 'The Mystery of Holly Lane' (1953) and 'The Mystery of Tally-Ho Cottage' (1954).

Another story about a group of children who form a band and call themselves The Put-Em-Rights.It was the Tramping Preacher who first gave them the idea, when he stirred their hearts and imaginations by saying that they could help the world along by trying to help put the wrong things right. It was not long before the band found their first task, and it fell to Micky to tackle the gardener about his unkindness to his dog. Then the tasks come rolling along, and soon each member of the little band has a particular person to help or problem to solve. The tasks they set themselves are ambitious, and their resolves do not always turn out as expected. In spite of valiant efforts, things get rather out of hand and almost too involved for them to manage; but The Put-Em-Rights,although sometimes despondent, are never really dismayed and they go on trying.
How they emerge from the difficulties which beset them comes at the end of the story,of course. It is full of fun and excitement, and the children in it are so real that they might easily be you and your own friends.

'The Sea of Adventure' tells how Jack, Lucy-Ann,Dinah (and Kiki the parrot,of course) go off for a holiday together, with their old friend Bill Smugs.
Bill is in danger from his enemies. He must "disappear" for a while,so what could be better than to visit the lonely bird- islands on the far-off northern sea,in company with the four children and Kiki? And then,of course, they sail straight into Adventure! What is going on among these lonely islands? Bill can guess - and pays for for his guessing - and then the four children are left all alone on Puffin Island, expecting the enemy to come and capture them.Thrills and alarms, excitement and shocks come one after the other, until even the reader's heart begins to beat as fast as Lucy-Ann's.Kiki makes friends with Huffin and Puffin, the two tame puffins, and has as big a share in the adventure as anyone.

This is the 4th book of the popular St. Clare's series by Enid Blyton. These exciting school stories are unusul in their aliveness and humour. The girls are real characters, bad and good, kind and unkind, happy and unhappy. In this book we follow especially the fortunes of the two head-girls of the second form,Lazy Anna and Spiteful Elsie, and of two new girls,Mirabel, tiresome and silly, and Gladys, the little Misery-Girl.All the familiar characters from the first form are here too,the O'Sullivan twins,Don't- Care-Bobby (with a mischievious trick for Mam'zelle!),Carlotta the circus-girl,feather-headed Alison, and serious Hilary, once head-girl of the first form.
Lessons and games, feasts and matches, tricks and concerts, rewards and punishments - all the stuff of school-life is here, readable, amusing, instructive and amazingly entertaining.

An important and welcome addition to the Enid Blyton adventure story canon for all Blyton fiction collectors/officianados.
Harry Rountree (1878-1950) Born Auckland, New Zealand, son of a banker.Worked as a lithographer in a commercial studio. Attracted by British illustration,he moved to London in 1910,where his work was noticed by S. H. Hamer, the editor of Little Folks (a British periodical). Working for books as well as magazines,he became known for his drawings of animals, which he drew with a keen eye for humorous detail. His distinctive style has a faintly fin-de-siecle flavour, with densely worked areas of deep shadow contrasting with 'bleached out' areas of light, creating an insistent surface pattern. He was a member of the London Sketch Club, and a friend of Harold Earnshaw, with whom he played golf. [Earnshaw studied art in London and also was a member of the Sketch Club and the Chelsea Arts Club.He lost his arm in WW1, but taught himself to draw left-handed.His work appeared regularly in children's annuals and anthologies, where his drawings and colour plates can be seen to echo the work of John Hassall in their humour and bold conception. He married Mabel Lucie Attwell**,and is thought to have been responsible for some of the more naturalistic parts of her drawings, such as the animals.Died as a result of his war injuries,in 1937.]
Harry Rountree seemed to have outlived his popularity as an illustrator - one of his last commissions was Winifred Humphries' 'Wog and Wig.'(1947) - dying in relative poverty at St. Ives,Cornwall, where he is commemorated by a plaque on the harbour jetty.
Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!

A highly collected and prolific children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item/ephemera in Blyton's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.Wartime issues/editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and as such, are highly sought after.
As an extremely scarce UK,1st edn, this is the earliest reprint edn noted or listed elsewhere and equally as such,an important and welcome addition to the Enid Blyton adventure story canon for all Blyton collectors/officianados. Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers. Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.

Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers. Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration - as this example can testify - and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/ title.

The 3rd book of 6 in the 'Malory Towers' series.A stand alone novel but still about the same girls in the other titles in the series. The stories have followed Darrell and the other girls from her very first day, when she was 12 years old, through all the forms of the school, one in each book, until she becomes head-girl of the school and leaves.
We meet again most of the girls we met in the first 2 Malory Towers books, and a few more. Darrell is here again,of course.Alicia and her tricks,Irene and Belinda the madcaps, stolid Jean, loyal Sally.
We meet Zerelda too,the American girl with her "wunnerful" ways; Bill, short for Wilhelmina, mad on horses; Mavis, who has a remarkable voice and is sure she is going to be an opera singer. How do they settle down with the other girls? And what about the two Mam'zelles, and Matron, and Miss Potts, the house-mistress? They are all here again, lively, real, part of Malory Towers. The whole school comes to life with its work and games, its fun and laughter, its ups and downs and never-failing interest. One of the best Malory Towers books to date (then 1949).
An exceptional example in exceptional condition notwithstanding dw/dj's presence - an important and welcome addition to the Blyton/Malory Towers canon for all Blyton/ schoolgirls fiction collectors/officianados.

Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker forged their internationally famous Himalayan climbing partnership during the second half of the 1970's and when they died together on the North-East Ridge of Everest in 1982 they left behind a track record of totally committing lightweight first ascents which was to be the inspiration of a whole new generation of alpine-syle expeditions. They each wrote two accomplished books which, deservedly, soon acquired classic status and became required reading for all venturing to high
altitude. It is fitting that the memorial to these two exceptional climbers and writers should take the form of the annual
Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature. As for their own four books, these are now reprinted for the first time in one volume.[Publisher's blurb.]
Savage Arena was published posthumously in 1982,but covers a span of Tasker's remarkable climbing career from the first British winter ascent of the Eigerwand, via
Dunagiri South Face with Dick Renshaw (1975), Changabang West Wall with Peter Boardman(1976), Kangchenjunga North Ridge with Boardman, Scott and Bettembourg (1979),and two thwarted attempts on the West and the Abruzzi Ridges of K2 in 1978 and 1980.
Everest the Cruel Way,is Tasker's account
of the 1980 British eight-man attempt to climb Everest in winter,by the notorious West Ridge with Alan Rouse,John Porter, Brian Hall, Pete Thexton, Paul Nunn and Al and Aid Burgess.
The Shining Mountain was published in 1978,three years after Boardman had reached the summit of Everest on Chris Bonington's large-scale South-West Face expedition (which Boardman irreverently described as 'the last great colonial experience').The two-man ascent of Changabang, with Tasker, could not have been a more different undertaking, and was
rated the hardest climb achieved in the Himalaya to that date. The book went on to win the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize in 1979.
Sacred Summits was already in proof when Boardman went off to Everest for the last time in 1982.It covers three very different expeditions - to the Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea with his future wife
in 1978-9,the impressive four-man first ascent of Kangchenjunga North Ridge(1979),
and later that year the first ascent of the South Summit of Gauri Sankar by its gruelling West Ridge in a team of five.As they interweave their stories, these four books convey the addictive exhilaration, the frustrations and the tragedies of high-altitude climbing, and the single-minded committment involved in getting to the top for two men who were both friends and rivals and blessed with the eloquence to decribe their passion thoughtfully, honestly and with a wry humour.

Poet, visionary, iconoclast, feminist icon, and High Priestess of Punk,Patti Smith is widely recognised as one of the most influential musicians of her time and a pivotal figure in popular culture.
Patti Smith was born in Chicago and
raised in the swamps of New Jersey.
Pregnant at sixteen, she escaped small-town life in 1967 to find fame in New York City.As flatmate and muse to Robert Mapplethorpe and lover of junkie poet Jim Carroll and playwright Sam Shepard, she developed her skills as a poet, actress and rock writer.Later, during affairs with musicians Todd Rundgren,Tom Verlaine and Allen Lanier, she prepared herself for rock
and roll fame.In 1972 Patti published her first book of poetry,'Seventh Heaven'.
Slowly her ground-breaking poetry performances began to include musicians: Lenny Kaye on guitar and later drums, bass and keyboard. She recorded her first single 'Piss Factory',in 1974 and in 1975 found recognition with the release of her first album, the seminal Horses.Over the next years she changed the face of rock and roll and became the first international punk star.
Suddenly, however,at the pinnacle of her success in 1979,the 'Field Marshall of Rock and Roll' moved from Manhattan to suburban Detroit to live with her husband, the legendary Fred 'Sonic' Smith, guitarist for the MC5s.For fifteen years, she lived far away from the rock world, raising her two children and working with her husband whose long-term illness, exacerbated by alcohol, led to his death in 1994.
Since then she has staged one of the
most remarkable comebacks in rock history.
This vivid and authoritative biography celebrates the life of a punk survivor, poet and icon who defines her times,a biography that places her at the centre of the New York underground that included Andy Warhol,Lou Reed,Bob Dylan,Blondie and William Burroughs.
Not to be confused with an unauthorised biography by the same author and with Roberta Bayley; ISBN 0684823632.

The Twelfth Man,in cricketing parlance,is the player who acts as a fielding substitute when a member of his side is ill or injured;more important, perhaps,it is the Twelfth Man who brings out the trays of drinks to sustain players wilting in the hot sun of an Australian, West Indian,South African,New Zealand,or even an English summer's afternoon. The Twelfth Man of the Lord's Taverners, that remarkable Commonwealth-wide organisation of "good fellows" from the worlds of sport and the arts, dedicated to the task of raising money for charity, has made for himself a very special place in the Commonwealth - and indeed the World - side. The sustenance he has given wilting players over the years has varied considerably in its content; sometimes it has soothed, sometimes it has inspired, sometimes it has been in the shape of a hearty kick on the backside, but never has it been placed with less than painstaking accuracy.
On 10 June 1971,the Twelfth Man,HRH the Prince Philip,Duke of Edinburgh, reaches his half century, his fiftieth birthday. There will be much made in celebration, but it is doubtful if any present will give him greater pleasure than this book, a gift given to him as a mark of loyalty and devotion by his fellow Lord's Taverners. Their happy idea was to ask the writers, artists, sportsmen and show business personalties listed on the back of the dw/dj to give an original piece of work of their own choice as a birthday present to Prince Philip. These have been combined by a founder-member of the Lord's Taverners,Martin Boddey,in a book printed and specially bound for presentation to HRH.Further to celebrate the occasion,an edition of the book for the general public has been printed from the same type, and the royalties from its sale will be put to a fund to be administered by Prince Philip.
The Twelfth Man is that book,an incomparable anthology and permanent bedside book of essays, stories, paintings and drawings by an incomparable list of contributors, who could only have been brought together in such a good cause. No happier way of presenting one's own good wishes to HRH on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday could be made than by purchasing a copy of this book and thereby contributing to a cause which is dear to his own heart and interests.
The Lord's Taverners, since their foundation in 1950 by a small group of actors and their friends in the world of art and entertainment, have raised a fund of £200,000 (then 1971).The fund is administered by The National Playing Fields Association for the provision of cricket pitches and playing facilities of all kinds for boys' clubs, village teams and such-like who might otherwise be denied the means of playing the noble game.Their beneficiaries now number well over 1,500 clubs and youth organisations throughout the country,(again, then 1971) and special grants have been made to help representative schoolboy teams to tour in the Commonwealth.See below, for complete list of contributors: Annigoni (Mini-car designer), John Arlott, Douglas Bader, Roger Bannister, Raymond Baxter, Nicholas Bentley, Patrick Beresford, John Betjeman, Basil Boothroyd, Jack Broome, Patrick Campbell, Neville Cardus, Dennis Castle, John Chamier, Daphne du Maurier, Gerald Durrell, Hugh Falkus, James Fisher, Clement Freud, Paul Gallico, GILES, GILROY, Robert Gittings, James Gleeson, Seton Gordon, C.Gordon Glover, Nathaniel Gubbins and HARGREAVES (cartoonist). Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 30 year-old age and nature, i.e an ephemeral paperback Proof. It really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and the lack of book's physical detracting faults commonly found in a decades old paperback.See also my book ID rja1211 for UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn of author's 'Voices in the Garden' novel.
There are no such places as Bargemon-sur-Yves, Saint-Basile or any of the other villages. They come strictly from my imagination and are,in some cases, composites of places which once I knew well in the late eighties, which is when this story is set - before a number of rules and regulations were altered in France, before the European Community existed, and when AIDS had only just started to wreak havoc among the young of both sexes.

This book, which makes use of computerized data,is the most thorough study of 1/72 scale models in the world presently available (then 1988).It lists all the models that have been produced in all the countires of the world since the inception of kits.It constitutes a truly encyclopaedic guide encompassing nearly 5,900 different mouldings and should prove useful to several categories of readers.
Modellers will be able to use it as
a reliable reference to obtain the kits they are interested in.They will also find over 60 colour photographs of models assembled by experts - food for thought and maybe self-criticism to assess their own modelling skills or set exacting standards before tackling a new model. Collectors are sure to find at least a few specimens hitherto unknown to them among the 500 colour photographs of boxtops spanning the period from 1935 to the present. The addresses provided in the book should also help them find the models they are looking for.
The scale model is the ideal medium to portray the amazing variety of aircraft produced from the early days to the present times. But 'Encyclopaedia of Military Models' deals not only with 1/72 scale aircraft but also with missiles,
science-fiction,vehicles,artillery,
dioramas and various accessories including figures and even ships.

First UK and first English language edition of this collection of two suspense novellas - The Evil Eye and The Sleeping Beauty.
French authors credited with having established an authentically French sub-genre of crime fiction with its emphasis on mounting psychological suspense and ingenious plotting.
This successful collaboration produced 43 novels,100 short stories and 4 plays.Their works were adapted into numerous films, but most notably Les Diaboliques (1955), directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, and Vertigo (1958),directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
Whilst not a huge output, nevertheless,a highly sought after and collected authored-genre of crime fiction in their typical style and format and will be an important and welcome addition to the Boileau & Narcejac canon. With only a handful of English translations and with most out-of-print,all English 1st edns can be regarded as uncommon, especially in collectable states, some being rare and valued/priced accordingly.

The four great railways of the between the wars period, the LMS, LNER, GWR and SR,have been the subject of numerous books in past years, mostly written in the form of company histories and dealing primarily with mechanical engineering and train performance. This book fills a gap between these previously published works and the more erudite studies of transport economists, with a fresh appraisal of the railways as a whole, and how each company tackled the problems, both of its own making and those forced on it by outside influences. The author served the former LNER and subsequently held high office in various parts of the British Rail network concerned with modernisation, planning, training and education, retiring as director of the Channel Tunnel scheme. He is thus eminently qualified to write about
the four great railways from the inside.
The book discusses the need for the 1923 grouping and how it came about;there are character sketches of each of the four main line companies, and chapters dealing with mechanical engineering, civil engineering, train services, road competiton, the railway-men themselves, and
the many other facets, including shipping and hotels, allied to each company. But this
is much more than a mere historical record, for the author examines closely many of the policy decisions of the twenties and thirties and discusses why some brought benefits while others went disastrously wrong. This is a valuable new study of the heyday of the traditional steam railway in Britain, concluding with the run-up to nationalisation in which the
author was personally involved.A superb copy of an out-of-print 1st edition,as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's.

"A bear? On Paddington Station?" Mrs Brown looked at her husband in amazement. "Don't be silly, Henry. There can't be!"
Paddington Bear had travelled all the way from Darkest Peru when the Brown family first met him on Paddington station.Since then their lives have never been quite the same. . . for ordinary things become quite extraordinary when a bear called Paddington is involved.
Unabridged and illustrated in glorious full-colour throughout, this exquisite gift edition of the original story is truly to be treasured!
It was Christmas Eve,1956,when BBC Television cameraman and freelance writer Michael Bond came across a toy bear sitting all by itself on a shelf in a London department store. He couldn't resist buying it for a stocking filler for his wife, and they named it 'Paddington' after the railway station near their flat.Had it been any other kind of toy the story might have ended there. But with bears one thing often leads to another,so when Michael wondered what might have happened had a real bear found itself alone on a big train terminus, the muse struck and 'A Bear Called Paddington' was born.
Fifty years and many millions of books later, Paddington continues to touch the hearts of adults and children worldwide with his earnest good intentions and humorous misadventures.
Michael Bond was awarded the OBE for services to children's literature in 1997,and in 2007 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Reading University.Born in Newbury and raised in Reading he lives in London with his wife, Sue,and two guinea pigs named Olga da Polga and Vladimir.

Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable and even particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation but for the Contents page, and for a book of its near 50 year-old age and nature, i.e. a children's ephemeral, interactive book.It is only the faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite the described faults it is still an acceptable example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of other detracting faults.
Games, puzzles, activity features, jokes and quizzes; play Paddington's Great Train Race, make a puppet show, learn to tell fortunes, and make gingerbread bears.A brand new story and lots of exciting features and Paddington invites all his friends into his world of fun and games.
