Edna O'Brien's commanding new novel is a story of attachments; especially the attachment between a mother and daughter, who yearn for closeness but are also estranged. From her hospital bed in Dublin, the elderly Dilly awaits the visit of her daughter, Eleanora, from London. The epochs of her life pass before her; emigrating to America in the 1920s,a romantic liaison she had there, the destiny that brought her back to Ireland, and her marriage into the stately Rusheen. She also retraces Eleanora's precipitate marriage to a foreigner, which alienated mother and daughter even more, and Dilly's heart-rending letters sent over the years in a determination to reclaim her daughter. Eleanora's visit does not prove to be the glad reunion that it might have been and,in her sudden departure, she leaves behind the secret journal of their stormy relationship,a revelation which brings the novel to a shocking close. Ireland is always the inner and outer landscape for Edna O'Brien's fiction but, with 'The Light of Evening',we also have a cinematic portrait of Brooklyn in the 1920s,seen through the eyes of a young emigrant. It is a novel of dreams and broken dreams but, at its core,is the realisation that the bond between mother and child is unbreakable, stronger than even death. A powerful, ambitious and disturbing novel,it is sure to bring this daring author her widest audience yet. Want more Edna O'BRIEN titles? In Wild Decembers,Edna O'Brien completes her brilliant depiction of contemporary Ireland, which began with 'House of Splendid Isolation' (see rja1260) and continued with 'Down by the River.' 'Heraldic and unflagging it chugged up the mountain road, the sound,' a new sound jarring in on that profoundly pensive landscape.' The arrival of a tractor, and its enigmatic owner precipitate a chain of events in an isolated Irish community. Joseph Brennan, who had ruled the mountain, sees in Michael Bugler, the returned exile,a threat. For Breege,Joseph's younger sister,Bugler is an irresistible stranger to whose magnetism she must not succumb for fear of betraying her brother.A love-hate story on many levels,'Wild Decembers' explores the depth and darkness at the root of all possession. With a rich and comic cast of characters, this primal story is set in the same locale as in Edna O'Brien's earlier novels. It is a complex and daring work, fixed in time and a place, yet imbued with the permanence of myth. In British folktale, legend and literature,King Arthur, the saviour hero of the land, lives on.He takes his origin from a possible heroic warrior of the Celtic races who was the dominant leader of the resistance movement against the invading English. But in the Middle Ages the English themselves came to adopt him as their representative king, and the stories of his exploits,of his knights - Lancelot,Gawain, Kay and the rest - and of his beautiful Queen Guinevere and her fatal love affair with Lancelot all took their settings from Britain. Nowhere are these stories more vividly perpetuated than on the face of the British landscape. From Loch Lomond to St Michael's Mount, from Wookey Hole to the Brecon Beacons, striking natural features throughout England,Scotland and Wales have tales of Arthur and his knights attached to them; and so do man-made monuments, from pre-historic stone circles and burial chambers to medieval fortified castles and inaccessible hermit's cells. In all their variety of shape and mood the major Arthurian sites of Britain are illustrated here,in colour throughout,by Ernest Frankl (well known as the photographer of the Pevensey Press souvenir guidebooks),who evokes their quintessential character. In his commentary, the distinguished medieval scholar Derek Brewer first traces the growth of Arthurian stories in literature, and then takes a refreshingly direct look at the tales surrounding each site - without minimising the power of the legends, and of the locations that have fostered them,to stir the imagination. Usefully divided into four main regions to serve as a guide for planning holidays and as a gazetteer whilst travelling, this handsome book will be welcomed as a unique compilation by all lovers of Britain's heritage. Utterly original, deeply moving and very funny, 'Ethel & Ernest is the story of Raymond Briggs's parents from their first chance encounter to their deaths, told in Briggs's unique strip-cartoon format. Nothing is invented, nothing embroidered - this is the reality of two decent, ordinary lives,of two people who,as Briggs tells their story, become representative of us all.The book is also social history: we see the dark days of the Second World War,the birth of the Welfare State, the advent of television, and all the changes that were so exhilarating and bewildering for Ethel and Ernest to experience as they brought up their only son. Raymond Briggs's earlier books -'Father Christmas', 'Fungus the Bogeyman', 'The Snowman', 'When the Wind Blows', 'The Man' - are acknowledged classics.'Ethel & Ernest',a marvellous,life-enhancing book for all ages,is his most extraordinary achievement yet (then 1998). Raymond Redvers Briggs (b.1934).Born in London, son of a milkman.Studied at Wimbledon School of Art (at the age of fifteen,1949-53) and completed a typography course at the Central School of Art.And after National Service,he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1955- 57).Since 1957,he has been a full-time illustrator and author, mainly of children's books; since 1961,he has been a part-time lecturer in illustration at Brighton Polytechnic. He won the Kate Greenaway Medal for 'The Mother Goose Treasury' (1966) and 'Father Christmas' (1973),the first book for which he adopted the distinctive strip-cartoon format that he has since used frequently.'The Snowman' had no words, and was adapted by him for television (December 1982); 'When the Wind Blows',a powerful condemnation of nuclear defence (for adults),was adapted for radio (February 1983) and the theatre (April 1983).An accomplished draughtsman,he works in line and watercolour, gouache, pencil and crayons. Raymond Briggs is one of our most respected and beloved artists, and went on to produce a notable treasure trove of work.Characters that he's created are now icons for generations of children, include 'Fungus the Bogeyman', 'Father Christmas' and,of course, the beloved 'Snowman.' The biography of his parents in graphic novel form,'Ethel & Ernest',also became a bestseller in the UK,and an animated feature film based on the novel will be released in 2016.Briggs has won many other awards over his career including the Kurt Maschler Award, The Children's Book of the Year, the Dutch Silver Pen Award. UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued, illustrated 1st edn.FINE-.No owner inscrptn.Bright, crisp, sharp-cornered,original paper-covered,glossy laminated, colour pictorial artwork by Raymond Briggs, illustrated boards front and back, with a black-outlined white panel with black lettered author's name and book's title within it,inset into top edge of the mirror's reflection coloured illustration to front board, black lettered white spine/backstrip,and black outline-bordered full-colour illustration to rear board respectively; with minimal, negligible shelf-wear,bumping to edges and corners, both head+foot of spine/backstrip minisculely bumped - as usual/normal - but with no nicks, tears or splits present, and immaculate plain white endpapers. The only overall detraction being the assorted sized 8/9 rust colour spots to rear board - a production fault? Possibly some impurity in the board used as the spots seem to be under the laminate, and concomitant area of the internal rear endpaper unaffected. Both boards virtually scoring/indent free - certainly much less the could be reasonably expected for a book of its age,and front board's fore-edge with a small dent and concomitant crease wrinkling for approx. 1.5".Top+fore-edges very lightly aged/toned but still clean and without blemish; contents bright, tight clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread, other than my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj as issued, illustrated 1st edn,32pp [unpaginated and includes title page],includes colour artwork by Raymond Briggs, illustrated comic-strip story with speech+thought bubbles format.See also my book ID rja2176 for another copy of same title. Visually the exterior appearance is still more than acceptable for a book of it's age and nature,i.e a child's book, and particularly internally, the contents are in a really exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent an overall higher grading.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for brightness and cleanliness. 'Gentleman Jim',is the author's first homage to his parents and his upbringing,in an affectionate satire on the reveries of Jim Bloggs,a British lavatory cleaner, frustrated at his lack of education, who day dreams of being a highwayman and/or other raffish, glamorous figures - thus enabling Briggs scope to play with episodic adventurous, painterly background imagery.Briggs’ first adult work but also because it’s the first book to feature Jim & Hilda Bloggs, later to appear in Briggs’ masterpiece of nuclear terror; 'When The Wind Blows.' A graphic novel classic from one of the world's best-known cartoonists. He won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice, once for 'The Mother Goose Treasury' (1966) and then the other one for 'Father Christmas' (1973),the first book for which he adopted the distinctive strip-cartoon format that he has since used frequently. 'The Snowman' had no words, and was adapted by him for television (December 1982); 'When the Wind Blows',a powerful condemnation of nuclear defence (for adults),was adapted for radio (February 1983) and the theatre (April 1983).An accomplished draughtsman,he works in line and watercolour, gouache, pencil and crayons. One Saturday morning John wakes up to find an invisible something sitting on the end of his bed.The something seems to be gigantic but John can`t work out just how big it is.He tries to measure it,but the invisible giant won`t let him. When John asks this strange new friend its name, the letters IVO appear on his mirror, so John decides to call him Ivor. The invisible giant plays tricks on John`s mum and dad, whizzing the washing line round, spraying the neighbours with a hose pipe and stealing the cherries from the trifle when Auntie Barbara comes to tea.But he can be helpful too: he hoovers the carpets and even does the washing up. When Ivor tells John that he wants to go out with him,John takes him to the park where he gets up to even more mischief. but it is when John takes Ivor to school that the trouble really starts. . . 'IVOR THE INVISIBLE' accompanies the film of the same name produced by Screen First for Channel 4.For the first time,Raymond Briggs has written a story especially for the screen and this book uses images based on his original drawings, selected and compiled by Sue Tong. Asa Briggs was a codebreaker at Bletchley Park from 1943 to 1945,serving as a part of a team of men and women who worked to crack Axis codes and ciphers. Many books have been written about the Buckinghamshire mansion during the Second World War since secrecy rules were relaxed in the 1970's,but Briggs' memoirs are one of only a few first-hand accounts of life at the Park written by a professional historian. Briggs was a history student at Sidney Sussex College,Cambridge, when war was declared in 1939.After graduating in 1941, he taught history at Keighley Grammar School and served in the Royal Corps of Signals before joining the Intelligence Corps in 1942.At Bletchley Park,he worked in Hut Six under the guidance of the brilliant mathematician Gordon Welchman. 'Secret Days' is a meticulously researched account of daily life at Bletchley Park.It covers the range of work done at Bletchley Park, from code-breaking to radio interception to translation to 'administration' to catering and maintenance work.It also describes the two camps that accommodated many of Bletchley's employees.Bletchley's vibrant and diverse community fostered many friendships and Briggs' account provides a fascinating insight the social life of 'BP',as it was known. 'Secret Days' also contains a detailed, critical review of the historiography of Bletchley Park. The title 'Secret Days' reflects the way in which workers at Bletchley Park thought and worked in terms of days, rather than months or years. Each 'day' was divided into three eight-hour shifts, often with deadlines to meet at the end of each shift. There's a bear in Tilly's house! Unperturbed by this,Tilly sets about the seemingly impossible task of making the bear welcome. The bear is vast, snowy white, and not very easy to manage. Raymond Briggs's pictures for this wonderful book have a larger-than-life exuberance. "Everyone," he says,"has at least one bear book in them." But this is no cosy teddy bear story - it turns a real bear into a real character,to be loved and cherished by all the millions of children who have already taken 'The Snowman' (see book ID rja1627),'Father Christmas','The Man' (see book ID rja411112),'Fungus the Bogeyman'(see book ID rja315),and all the great gallery of Briiggs characters to their hearts. A 1982 graphic novel by British artist Raymond Briggs, showing a nuclear attack on Britain by the Soviet Union from the viewpoint of a retired couple,Jim and Hilda Bloggs. The book was later made into an animated film,by director Jimmy Murakami in 1986.The couple were voiced by Sir John Mills and Dame Peggy Ashcroft. The soundtrack consisted of songs, many with an anti-nuclear bent,by rock musicians and groups, such as Roger waters, Genesis, and David Bowie. There was also a BBC R4 dramatisation in 1983, with the voices of Peter Sallis and Brenda Bruce, directed by John Tydeman. The book follows the story of the Bloggs,a couple previously seen in the book 'Gentleman Jim.' One afternoon, the couple hear a message on the radio about an "outbreak of hostilities" in three days' time.Jim immediately starts construction of a fallout shelter (in accordance with the government-issued Protect and Survive brochure, obtained from a public library),while the two reminisce about WW2.Their reminiscences are used both for comic effect and to show how the geopolitical situation has changed, but also how nostalgia has blotted out the horrors of war.A constant theme is Jim's optimistic outlook and his unshakeable belief that the government knows what is best and has the situation under full control, coupled with Hilda's attempts to carry on life as normal. Into the jaws of death, into the mouth of hell rode the six hundred. . . . . On 25 October 1854,during the Crimean War,the Light Brigade of the British Cavalry Division made the most magnificent and most brutal charge in military history. Almost seven hundred men armed with sabre and lance charged straight at the muzzles of the Russian cannons. In the slaughter that followed, many fell to roundshot and shell fired from the front and from both sides. Those who survived took a terrible revenge on the enemy. This vivid and extraordinarily detailed account of the charge and the bloody melee that followed,by an author with unique access to regimental archives,is told largely in the words of the survivors themselves.Terry Brighton brings twenty years' research to life, sets aside our most cherished historical theories about what happened and who was to blame, and asks what can be concluded from the written accounts of the cavalrymen who rode hell's mile. 'Hell Riders' shatters many popular myths about the charge, and names the officer the men believed was to blame for the blunder. Its most extraordinary conclusion is that far from being a miserable failure, the charge must be considered an astonishing success. This book takes the reader closer than ever before to the experience of charging down the valley of death, and reveals the horrific truth about the charge of the Light Brigade exactly as the survivors told it. Forensic psychologist Paul Britton can 'walk through the minds' of those who murder, rape, torture, extort and kidnap. He can see the world through their eyes and know what they're thinking. That is why the police have called on him to help with many high-profile criminal investigations and catch those responsible. How does he do it? In 'Picking Up the Pieces',Paul Britton reveals the psychological and forensic foundations upon which he has based his expertise. It is a remarkable journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind. From top-security prisons and mental hospitals to ordinary outpatients' clinics,Britton introduces us to his clinical and forensic work.A man turns into a werewolf at four o'clock every afternoon.Another has built an electric chair in his basement to kill his father. A woman accepts the blame for abusing her child when she had nothing to do with it. How can they be helped? When Britton so accurately profiled the child killers of James Bulger in Liverpool,or told the police the true nature of Frederick and Rosemary West,he could do so because he had treated disturbed children and confronted sadistic sexual murderers in his consulting room. For twenty years Britton has interviewed, assessed and treated people with damaged or broken minds. Some were responsible for terrible crimes, others were stopped before it was too late. The answers aren't hidden at bloody crime scenes or in the post- mortem photographs.Instead, they are often buried within someone's mind or deep in their past.Paul Britton reveals the process of unlocking and deciphering the truth. 'Picking Up the Pieces' is a companion volume to Britton's award-winning autobiography,'The Jigsaw Man'.It is a unique and revealing book that provides important insight into the complex organism we call the human mind.Born in 1946,and following degrees obtained in psychology from Warwick and Sheffield Universities,Britton has spent the last twenty years working as a consultant clinical and forensic psychologist. He has advised the Association of Chief Police Officers' Crime Committee on offender profiling for many years and currently teaches postgraduates in clinical and forensic psychology. What lies behind the mask of St George? Most modern researchers believe he never existed as a historical character, and yet he is still revered throughout the world as an inspirational guide and spiritual power. The truth is that he is far older than we might imagine,pre-dating Christianity by many thousands of years. He has powerful links with the enigmatic Green Man and the Knights Templar who understood the mythical traditions of those former times. Is he really an ancient God of the earth from the very beginning of time? This quest to discover the real St George leads to Ancient Egypt, the Holy Land, the megalithic temples of Britain and Ireland and the cathedrals and churches of Europe. It is the story of human evolution from the earliest times, and includes the rediscovery of a science of the forces of Nature, symbolised by the dragon. Within this book is a key to discovering the principles that guided ancient religions and civilizations across the world, and the power of self-transformation that comes with a true understanding of the Mystery behind the myth. BROCHU,JIM:
Lucy IN THE AFTERNOON - an intimate memoir of Lucille Ball.

Imprint: LONDON.NEL,1990.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback., With Dust Jacket

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn,no price-clip to dw/dj.8vo,271pp includes b/w photographs and an index. 'The most beloved star in show business' was how Ed Sullivan described Lucille Ball. For twenty three years she and, for most of the time, her producer and co-starring husband,Desi Arnaz, wound their way into the hearts of an adoring world-wide public with 'I Love Lucy', 'The Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy'.They were the most famously married couple in America. The birth of Desi Jnr., upstaged the inauguration of President Eisenhower. When Lucy and Desi divorced 'I Love Lucy' ended, their friends were distraught.Happily, their professional partnership survived their matrimonal one. Lucille Ball was the Goldwyn Girl who became Queen of the B's and ended up buying RKO, the studio in which she had learned her craft. She worked with all of the Hollywood greats - Orson Welles, Katherine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Henry Fonda, Judy Garland, Jack Benny. Then in Aug 1988 she added Jim Brochu to her inner circle of friends. BROCHU had sent her a play to read.Because he was also a mega-fan, he followed it with two hundred roses and a challenge to a game of back-gammon.Lucy, now in her seveties, was recovering from a stroke and a slight heart attack, but she accepted the challenge and that was the start of a magical nine months for BROCHU, the devoted fan, who visited Lucy in the afternoons for back-gammon, lemonade and laughter and gradually became the indispensable friend and confidant who saw her right up to the week of her death.Over the months Lucy opened up the most personal memories of her private and professional life, the difficulties of her marriage to Desi;the creation of their film empire;her relationship with her public;and her views on the stars who queued to be on her show. The result is a delightfully informal and indivdual tribute to the queen of comedy from a very loving friend.

Hugh Brogan writes in his Introduction: 'Ransome in large art lived through his correspondence.he wrote letters as easily as we make phone calls (he did not possess a telephone until he was in his fifties). Their language is still vital with his character.Hundreds survive and add up to a literary achievement that deserves to be put into print as much as his stories for children. We seem to come especially close to the man writing . . . and because of the letter's spontaneity,I have let them compose themselves into a portrait of the writer,in all his boyishness, his energy, his intelligence, his geniality (and his fretfulness) and the immense variety of his skills and interests.' Brogan says he has 'tried to be as light-handed an editor as possible',producing 'a reader-friendly selection rather than a definitive edition of the documents'. He begins with Ransome in St Petersburg at the start of the Great War in 1914 and as a witness of the Russian Revolution; then charts his stormy marriages, his love of large yachts (of which he owned five) and his tribulations writing the 'Swallows and Amazons' books which brought him lasting fame and a sale in the English language alone some five million copies. The book is illustrated with many of Ransome's own margin drawings. Hugh Brogan is Professor of History at the University of Essex and the author of 'The Life of Arthur Ransome' and 'Kennedy'. A number of men cooped up in a pillbox remain true unto death. It rains - unendingly - continuously - hopelessly. Shells burst overhead; an enemy plane flies over with devastating effect - one dead, three wounded. Two set forth on a quest for assistance, and we follow them in their exciting journey; but no help is possible till darkness has fallen. Meanwhile the pillbox falls in: the occupants are buried alive - thirst overpowers them - they try to open a way out - they try and they fail.At last help comes but too late - corpses are all that is to be found in Pillbox 17.This is the tale of true comradeship - a 'comradeship-in-arms'. Although a commonplace title, this particular item despite its fairly and honestly described faults,is all the more intriguing and interesting because of the contempraneous association of the post war-related activity of the signee and therefore probably quite scarce. Brooke's sonnet "The Soldier" is a poem that was the fifth poem in a series of poems entitled '1914 and Other Poems.' published in 1915. This collection of poetry outsold most others of the time, reaching an incredible 24th reprint by 1918.The poem is regarded as one of the most famous war poems ever written, reflecting British sorrow over and pride in the young men who died in World War I.A deeply patriotic and idealistic poem expressing a soldier's love for his homeland - in this case England, which is portrayed as a kind of nurturing paradise. Dorothy Brooke (b. 1st June,1883 – d. 10th June 1955) was the founder of The Old War Horse Memorial Hospital in 1934 in Cairo - renamed The Brooke Hospital for Animals in 1961.Developing from a single operation in Cairo into one of the world’s largest equine's welfare organisations,at work in many countries, with headquarters in London, it is known today as Brooke. She was first married in 1905 to Lt.-Col. James Gerald Lamb Searight,The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). They divorced in 1926.Brooke married again in 1926,to Major-General Geoffrey Francis Heremon Brooke,C.B., D.S.O., M.C. (1884–1966),16th/5th Lancers. Geoffrey Brooke was a recognised horse expert and author. He trained and rode his own steeplechasers,he was a polo-player and show-jumper and competed as a member of the British equestrian team in the Paris,1924 Summer Olympics. During World War I,horses cast from the veterinary hospitals had initially been sold to Egyptian dealers.British residents in Cairo had protested so forcefully that this practice was halted. In 1919,the cavalry, artillery and draught horses that had served in the British Army in the Egypt and Palestine campaigns of WW1 were sold in their many thousands to a life of continuous hard labour and a painful old age. Many had been requisitioned in England and had served in the British Yeomanry. Some had seen active service on the Western Front before being drafted as remounts to the Near East. After the Armistice, with 22,000 horses, mostly in Palestine and Sinai, requiring transport or disposal, the Remounts Directorate of the War Office ordered the local sale of all animals of 12 years and under that were deemed up to some work - those over 12 and the unsound, were destroyed. Animal welfare charity founder Dorothy Brooke was honoured with a blue plaque in Salisbury, where she lived with her husband from 1939-55. He and his youthful admirer meet again later at Oxford and in London.Facts come to light which cast doubt and then the shadow of discredit on the once glittering figure of the hero, until finally, after a spectacular wartime death,he sinks at once into utter obscurity. An old friend once described Sir Neville Cardus as 'his own man'.It is difficult to imagine a more perceptive description of the slight young lad from Rusholme in Manchester who,by dint of his own effort, ability and imagination, created an international reputation and a beguiling personal legend in the course of a career which extended over fifty years. As a writer on both cricket and music,Sir Neville achieved a stature which is perhaps without parallel: as a man he was an enigmatic mixture of determination and diffidence,self-doubt and self-indulgence, introspection and garrulity. Brookes has spent five years exploring Sir Neville's life and work. With the aid of letters, hitherto unpublished manuscripts, and material gathered from conversations with many of Cardus's closest friends and colleagues,he builds up a fascinating portrait of one of England's greatest journalists. Peter Brookes is an English political cartoonist who produced work for many publications, most notably The Times (UK newspaper),for which he is the leader-page cartoonist. In 1996,Political Cartoonist of the Year Peter Brookes launched a new series of cartoons in the The Times newspaper on Saturdays called 'Nature Notes' - brilliantly executed drawings of both domestic MPs and international leaders as members of a weird and wonderful world.A menagerie with a vegetable patch, the world of 'Nature Notes' is a place where the great and the good can and do become the small and the furry: Boris Yeltsin as a Muscovy (lame) duck; Ian Paisley as an Orange-Utan ('Devours all greenery'); and Baroness Thatcher as a rabid old bat ('Its venom is of European origin, and any bite can prove gravely injurious to grey-haired, bespectacled gentlemen'). Anything is possible - John Prescott can even become a Great Tit. 'Nature Notes' brings together over fifty of the first 'Nature Notes' cartoons to appear in The Times.Covering the period from February,1996 to June,1997,just after Labour's landslide victory in the General Election, each cartoon takes as its theme a news story of the time - among them Tory splits, sleaze and Euro-bickering; Labour's ruthlessly inexorable path to power; BSE,Budgets and Britannia; crime and royalty and Northern Ireland. Both a revealing commentary on the dog-days of Tory Britain and a hilarious succession of merciless character studies,'Nature Notes' is essential reading for the politically informed. Brookes is particularly noted for his "Nature Notes" series of cartoons, begun in February 1996,which portray various fictitious beasts, based on the appearance (and supposed habits) of well-known politicians. He has noted that a benefit of using animal images is that he can show his subjects doing things that, for reasons of decency, could not be published if they were portrayed as human.Brookes said: "you are able to depict crap and fornication and that sort of thing".During the coalition government in 2010, he began a notable series of cartoons known as the "Westminster Academy",which depicted Nick Clegg as a public school fag to a red cheeked David Cameron, who was portrayed as a prefect dressed in an Eton suit and Union Jack waistcoat, with Boris Johnson and George Osborne also appearing in some cartoons as his cronies. During this period also,he depicted leader of the opposition Ed Miliband and shadow Chancellor Ed Balls as Wallace and Gromit.[Wiki.] Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas customers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! UK,landscape 8vo HB+dw/dj,SIGNED bookplate,1st edn,6- 112pp [paginated] includes 54 full-page, full-colour political cartoons collected from 'THE TIMES' (a UK newspaper) from July,1999 to June,2001 - all by Peter Brookes,Text on opposite pages; plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages and dedication. Following the success of 'Nature Notes', the first two collections of his award-winning cartoons for 'The Times' newspaper on Saturdays, Peter Brookes now presents a third selection of brilliantly executed drawings of the people and stories that make the headlines. Covering two years of New Labour government since 1999 including the landslide victory at the General Election in June 2001,Nature Notes III shows how the great and the good might look as small, feathered or furry,or large and pachyderm, with Deputy Prime minister John Prescott as both an Unhappypotamus and a Rail- 'a bird that travels nowhere, fast' - William Hague as a MORI eel 'on the rocks' on the Blackpool shoreline at party conference time; Prime Minister 'Tony' Darwin's Theory of Devolution ('he denied he was attacking God's work because, after all,he was God'). Here also are hilariously acute insights into the top international news events of the last two years, from the Pond Life of Europe - a guide to the depth of Anglo-French understanding ('In Veto Fertilization - the dominant partner holds its mate firmly in its grip. Will not take "non" for an answer) - to the riches of the US presidential election with its Allitigator ('thick-skinned and lethal, this charmer thrives in the legal quagmire that is Florida') and Birds of America - your cut-out-and-keep guide to the high flyers, including former President Clinton as a hornbill ('often flies undone'); Texas woodpecker George W. Bush (Thickasa bricka); and the pregnant chadfinch. From political intrigue and scandal to crises of state abroad,Peter Brookes' dazzling portraits represent a uniquely individual and perceptive view of those who inhabit the corridors of power.
