Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's 25+ year-old age,and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It realy is an exceptional, exemplary example for its brightness, cleanliness and lack of detracting faults. See als my book ID rja31208 'Nature Notes III', UK,HB+dw/dj,author SIGNED,1st edn. Peter Brookes is an English political cartoonist who produced work for many publications, most notably The Times (UK newspaper),for which he is the leader-page cartoonist. In 1996,Political Cartoonist of the Year Peter Brookes launched a new series of cartoons in the The Times newspaper on Saturdays called 'Nature Notes' - brilliantly executed drawings of both domestic MPs and international leaders as members of a weird and wonderful world.A menagerie with a vegetable patch, the world of 'Nature Notes' is a place where the great and the good can and do become the small and the furry: Boris Yeltsin as a Muscovy (lame) duck; Ian Paisley as an Orange-Utan ('Devours all greenery'); and Baroness Thatcher as a rabid old bat ('Its venom is of European origin, and any bite can prove gravely injurious to grey-haired, bespectacled gentlemen').Anything is possible - John Prescott can even become a Great Tit. 'Nature Notes' brings together over fifty of the first 'Nature Notes' cartoons to appear in The Times.Covering the period from February,1996 to June,1997,just after Labour's landslide victory in the General Election, each cartoon takes as its theme a news story of the time - among them Tory splits, sleaze and Euro-bickering; Labour's ruthlessly inexorable path to power; BSE,Budgets and Britannia; crime and royalty and Northern Ireland. Both a revealing commentary on the dog-days of Tory Britain and a hilarious succession of merciless character studies,'Nature Notes' is essential reading for the politically informed. Brookes is particularly noted for his "Nature Notes" series of cartoons, begun in February 1996,which portray various fictitious beasts, based on the appearance (and supposed habits) of well-known politicians. He has noted that a benefit of using animal images is that he can show his subjects doing things that, for reasons of decency, could not be published if they were portrayed as human.Brookes said: "you are able to depict crap and fornication and that sort of thing".During the coalition government in 2010, he began a notable series of cartoons known as the "Westminster Academy",which depicted Nick Clegg as a public school fag to a red cheeked David Cameron, who was portrayed as a prefect dressed in an Eton suit and Union Jack waistcoat, with Boris Johnson and George Osborne also appearing in some cartoons as his cronies. During this period also,he depicted leader of the opposition Ed Miliband and shadow Chancellor Ed Balls as Wallace and Gromit. When Trevor Brooking was still at school, the Essex-born teenager was one of the most eagerly pursued prospects in London, but he chose to go to West Ham United - the only club that was prepared to allow him to complete his studies - and so began a lifelong attachment to the Upton Park outfit. In 1967 he made his debut for the club, and went on to play for them until 1984, helping them to win two FA Cup trophies, and scoring the only goal in the 1980 final.A cultured midfielder at the heart of West Ham's side,he was soon seen as crucial to England's fortunes, helping them to qualify for the World Cup finals in 1982. Brooking recalls the highlights of his career, playing with and against some of the most famous names in the sport, and provides revealing details about life with West Ham and England. His story recalls a time when he was a symbol of solidity during the era of flared trousers, punk, and the turmoil of the Revie regime. Respected by fans and his peers alike,Brooking has been at the forefront of the FA's work to develop the game in recent years, and his views on the future of football are essential reading. Authoress's 12th novel. When Anna Durrant is reported missing her friends seem unconcerned at her disappearance. After all,her life has been one of concealment: for years Anna submitted to the protective dependence of her mother, and even after Amy Durrant's death she simply conformed to the expectations of others. Increasingly,Anna finds herself trapped by the uneasy friendship of Mrs Marsh - a well-meaning,if not uncritical, friend of her mother - and the studied indifference of Mrs Marsh's son Nick. She must suffer, too,the insincere attentions of Doctor Halliday and his predatory wife Vickie. Only by drawing on extraordinary vigilance and determination,Anna realises, can she truly break away and enjoy her freedom. An uncommon and rare SIGNED example. Blessed with one of the richest and most distinctive voices in the music business,Elkie Brooks has been entertaining people around the world since the age of fifteen - and even longer,if you count the weddings and bar mitzvahs at which she was asked to perform in her native Manchester (UK) as a young girl! It was Don Arden, father of Sharon Osbourne and the notorious 'Mr Big' of the music world, who discovered her, making her change her name from Bookbinder and sending her on a tour of Germany. It was make or break for the still raw Elkie, but as always her voice won through. She went on to become part of cult rock groups such as Dada and Vinegar Joe,before establishing herself as one of the UK's most successful female vocalists.[In the 1990s she was recognised in the Guinness Book of Records as the most charted female of the last twenty years.] Yet the road to stardom was never an easy one.But for the support of Elkie's great friend Humphrey Littleton, she says she might have been dead from drink. She has experienced hardships that would have daunted most, and dealt with them with the same spirit, grit and humour that make her singing so powerful.Along the way she has worked with many of the biggest names in the business and recorded some of the most iconic songs in rock history, including 'Lilac Rain', 'Sunshine After the Rain' and her signature tune,'Pearl's a Singer'. In 'Finding My Voice',Elkie tells her remarkable story in her own unique voice, laying bare the reality of stardom and sharing her committment to the great passion of her life - music. Elkie has had sixteen UK hit albums and continues to record, releasing her twentieth studio album 'Powerless',in 2010. Terry Brooks, having written more than 40+ books,3/4s of which are related to one another. If read chronologically,it will spoil your reading of the epic Shannara series. For example, 'First King of Shannara' despite being a 'prequel' to 'The Sword of Shannara' would be best read after finishing 'The Heritage of Shannara' series - which includes The Scion of, The Druid of, The Elf Queen of and 'The Talismans of Shannara'- see my book ID rja117524 for UK,HB+dw/dj,1st edn example.                  Visually, the external appearance is more than acceptable, and particularly internally,is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's 25+ year-old age.It is only the toning faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite that,it really is still an exemplary example for it's lack of other age-acquired detracting faults commonly encountered in a book of this age.                                      The prequel to the 'Shannara' Series.            Set 500 years before "The Sword of Shannara",this is the story of the fall of the Druids and their city,Paranor. Horrified by the misuse of magic they had witnessed during the First War of the Races, the Druids at Paranor devoted themselves to the study of the old sciences, from the period before the collapse of civilization a thousand years before.Only the Bremen and a few trusted associates still studied the arcane arts. And for his persistence, Bremen found himself outcast, avoided by all but the few free-thinkers among the Druids. But his removal from Paranor was not altogether a terrible thing, for Bremen learned that dark forces were on the move from the Northlands. That seemingly invincible armies of trolls were fast conquering all that lay to their south. That the scouts for the army - and its principal assassins - were Skull Bearers, disfigured and transformed Druids who had fallen prey to the seductions of the magic arts. And that at the heart of the evil tide was an archmage and former Druid named Brona! Using the special skills he had acquired through his own study of Magic,Bremen was able to penetrate the huge camp of the Troll army and learn many of its secrets. And he immediately understood that if the peoples of the Four Lands were to escape eternal subjugation they would need to unite. But,even united, they would need a weapon, something so powerful that the evil magic of Brona, the Warlock Lord, would fail before its might. . .                                        Dark forces are on the move from the Northlands, and Bremen, an outcast Druid, learns of the huge Troll armies on the march and the Skull Bearers who act as their spies. To save the Druids,Bremen must convince the people of the Four Lands that their only hope lies in uniting - and in using the magic they fear above all else.                       Please contact the seller, particularly ALL overseas buyers, for correct [insured,or uninsured at own risk] shipping/P+p quotes BEFORE placing your order, especially if ordering any multiples.                            N.B. Now in 'Running with the Demon',Brooks does nothing less than revitalize fantasy fiction again, inventing the complex and powerful new mythos of the Word and the Void, good versus evil still, but played out in the "real world" of our present. On the hottest Fourth of July weekend in decades, two men have come to Hopewell,Illinois, site of a long and bitter steel strike. One is a demon,a dark servant of the Void, who will use the anger and frustration of the community to attain a terrible secret goal. The other is John Ross,a Knight of the Word,a man who, while he sleeps, lives in the hell the world will become if he fails to change its course on waking.Ross has been given the ability to see the future. But does he have the power to change it? At stake is the soul of a fourteen-year-old girl mysteriously linked to both men.And the lives of the people of Hopewell. And the future of the country. This Fourth of July, while friends and families picnic in Sinnissippi Park and fireworks explode in celebration of freedom and independence, the fate of humanity will be decided. Signalling at sea started when ships found themselves beyond shouting distance from one another.Today it has developed to the point when a fleet could be manoeuvred on another planet by means of radio telephone and television set (then 1973/4). Through all its restless stages of progress signal intercommunication has been the Royal Navy's lifeblood. 'Make Another Signal' is an anthology of signals from the logs of our warships past and present; some recapture the tension of a sea fight by on the spot signal commentary; others pinpoint and illuminate great naval moments. Then there are examples of how close or how far apart two minds concerned with the same problem - but separated by distance - can be.Add to this a large and varied collection of wit, drama, fun, sarcasm and pomposity which at some time has been flagged, flashed or tapped through the ether - each message having in common a thought in the mind of the sender at some past moment which has been preserved fresh from the tarnish of hindsight. The author wrote and published 'Make A Signal' some twenty years previous, which had also been out-of-print for over ten years. This could be considered a 'companion volume'. This title is also by a publisher who is no longer trading - so out-of-print too, and therefore quite scarce. London is the only city in the world where you could ever find Gilbert and George sharing space with the Gherkin and the Globe while the Great Fire burns and a gin drinker glugs her favorite tipple, and where members of the Bloomsbury Group hail a black cab while barrage balloons hover over Broadcasting House during the Blitz. In 'A London Alphabet',Christopher Brown presents a series of wonderfully whimsical linocuts illustrating every aspect of London past and present, including personalities, buildings, monuments, legends, historic events, and other metropolitan icons. From Dickens,Dr Johnson,Tower Bridge, and the Shard to the Diamond Jubilee,Wimbledon, pigeons, and jellied eels, all London life is here.A born-and- bred Londoner,Brown recounts his own memories of growing up in the capital, and also describes how he creates his distinctive prints. His unique, often humorous take on London will delight anyone who lives in or visits the city. Mass-Observation is a UK social research project; originally the name of an organisation which ran from 1937 to the mid-1960s,and was revived in 1981 at the University of Sussex. Originally aimed to record everyday life in Britain through a panel of about 500 untrained volunteer observers who either maintained diaries or replied to open-ended questionnaires (known as directives). The organisation also paid investigators to anonymously record people's conversations, their behaviour in workplaces, and on the street and also at various public occasions, amongst them and including public meetings, sporting and religious events too. During the period of WW2,Mass-Observation research was occasionally influential in shaping British public policy. In 1939 Mass-Observation publicly criticised the Ministry of Information's posters, which in turn, led to their being replaced with more appropriate ones.In addition, their study of saving habits was successfully used by John Maynard Keynes to argue for tax policy changes. Also, during the war, there were also a few cases of Mass Observation (MO) doing research on commission for government authorities trying to shape recruiting and war propaganda. Throughout WW2,hundreds of people kept diaries of their private daily lives as part of a groundbreaking nationa experiment. They were warehousemen and WRENS,soldiers and farmhands, housewives and journalists, united only by a desire to record the history they were living through. For decades their words have been held in the Mass-Observation Archive,a time capsule of ordinary voices that might otherwise have been forgotten. These voices tell the human story behind the iconic events of those six years,of the individuals grappling with a world turned upside down. From panic-buying and cpmpetitively digging for victory to extraordinary acts of bravery.'BLITZ SOIRIT' is a remarkable collection of real wartime experiences that represent the best and worst of human nature in the face of adversity. Resonant, darkly funny and deeply moving, this new collection will reveal what it was like to live through a crisis of unprecedented proportions.'BLITZ SPIRIT' celebrates ordinary lives - however small - and shines a light on the people we were, and the people we are now. First and originally published in 1970 (US, Holt,Rinehart & Winston and UK,BARRIE & JENKINS),this extraordinary book changed the way Americans think about the original inhabitants of their country. Beginning with the Long Walk of the Navajos in 1860 and ending 30 years later with the massacre of Sioux men, women, and children at Wounded Knee in South Dakota,it tells how the American Indians lost their land and lives to a dynamically expanding white society.During these three decades,America's population doubled from 31 million to 62 million. Again and again, promises made to the Indians fell victim to the ruthlessness and greed of settlers pushing westward to make new lives. The Indians were herded off their ancestral lands into ever-shrinking reservations, and were starved and killed if they resisted. It is a truism that "history is written by the victors"; and for the first time, this book described the opening of the West from the Indians' viewpoint. Accustomed to stereotypes of Indians as red savages, white Americans were shocked to read the reasoned eloquence of Indian leaders and learn of the bravery with which they and their peoples endured suffering. With meticulous research and in measured language overlaying brutal narrative,Dee Brown has focused attention on a national disgrace.Still controversial, but with many of its premises now accepted,'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' has sold millions of copies worldwide and reissues still continue. In less than six years the Fleet Air Arm grew from a small force, limited in numbers, manpower and material,to a powerful startegic weapon as large as the pre-war Royal Air Force in terms of effective front-line aircraft.Conceived and initially employed as an extension of the big guns of the Fleet, naval aviation was developed to the point where the aircraft carrier became the vital ship in any formation, offensive or defensive. Carrier-based aircraft supported every major amphibious operation from the landings in Norway in April 1940 right through to the re-occupation of Singapore in September 1945,with the sole exception of Dunkirk.Complemented by many action photographs, this book tells the story of operations taken part in by the carrier-borne aircraft, including the difficulties experienced with aircraft equipment, and the expansion of the Fleet Air Arm. Volume I of an intended two-volume work,by the Royal Navy's official historian, covering the carrier operations of the RN and describing the activities and operation of them. The second volume is intended to deal with the work of the Fleet Air Arm units not directly engaged in aircraft carrier operations, but which contributed so much to the fine operational record of the Fleet Air Arm during WW2. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! At Christmas 1914 on the Western Front, British and German soldiers sang carols to each other and fraternized openly in No Man's Land. They exchanged souvenirs, took photographs and in many cases freely admitted they had no wish to make war.A British officer who took part in the Christmas Truce wrote (thus reversing an old saying) 'It wasn't war,but it was magnificent.' People who find no interest in tales of battles and campaigns are drawn to the story of the Christmas Truce, yet among the thousands of books on the Great War,there has never been one on this highly emotive and fascinating subject. This book is intended to fill the gap.Its authors demonstrate that the truce was much more extensive, involved many more and lasted far longer than has hitherto been realized. In some areas,it was not until February 1915 that war began again in earnest and it was characterized in many cases by the most astonishing friendliness and courtesy between opposing trenches. The authors who also collaborated in the BBC television documentary 'Peace in No Man's Land' have undertaken a far-reaching programme of research. They have combed the war diaries of units involved, talked to participants, collected a remarkable range of contemporary letters and journals and even unearthed some amusing anecdotes. "One human episode amid all the atrocities",was Conan Doyle's verdict on the Christmas Truce - and it is the human aspect which the authors believe give it its particular significance and appeal. 'It is' they suggest,'perhaps the best and most heartening Christmas story of modern times.' The outbreak of war in 1939 saw the disappearance of many traditional British celebrations.Guy Fawkes' Night went immediately - gunpowder production was needed for the war effort and bonfires contravened the blackout. Summer holidays became a thing of the past and Easter all but disappeared as chocolate - and even real eggs - went 'on the ration'.In spite of this the nation remained determined to celebrate Christmas as a time of family and community; a time when war could be set aside,if only for a day. Drawing upon personal recollections, contemporary Mass Observation reports, newspaper articles and advertisements, personal and archive photographs,Mike Brown looks at each wartime Christmas on the British Home Front, from 1939 to 1944.He explores how people celebrted Christmas despite the problems of shortages, rationing, the blackout,Luftwaffe raids and the absence of family members who had been called up or evacuated. Life in Britain changed dramatically as the war progressed; the annual celebration of Christmas provides fascinating yearly 'snapshots', illuminating the changes over six years of conflict. What was the weather like? What was on the wireless? What were the popular records and sheet music of the time? What films were showing at the cinema? What about the pantomimes, shows and concerts? Parties, decorations and trees? Gifts and food are discussed with a look at the presents available, and in vogue. As shortages really took a hold, the various make-do-and-mend solutions are described, and insights are gained into how people adapted food recipes to cope. John Prescott is a fighter. He is notorious for his outspokenness. Nicknamed 'Thumper' and 'Rambo',his aura of raw honesty, thumping beliefs and bruising delivery can often reach where Tony Blair cannot. He is the rough diamond of the party,as well as its unlikeliest sex symbol, about whom poet Fleur Adcock penned passionate poems. Prescott has been patronised by the chattering classes,side-lined by spin doctors, and mocked by Tory ministers. He is said to have a chip on both shoulders. And yet, those who know him well say he is misunderstood and under-rated,that he is an ideas man.His complimentary relationship with Blair is crucial to Labour's success and Blair's continuing efforts to modernise the Labour party. So who is the real Prescott? He is seen as a champion of the traditional Labour, the trade unions, the left wing, the working-class.Yet his upbringing in Chester, after a childhood in working-class Wales and South Yorkshire was relatively middle-class and his career was shaped when,as a ship's steward,he served the rich and famous on-board Cunard liners. He was fighting for trade union ballots when Blair was still at school and he had spent half a decade in politics before entered Parliament.Yet he is known to be fully behind Blair's leadership and has no personal ambitions to be Prime Minister. Colin Brown pulls no punches in this fascinating and entertaining biography. He has been granted exclusive access to Prescott's private documents, files and photographs and exclusive interviews with those close to Prescott. With the full co-operation of his family and his fiercely loyal friends,he has been able to marry many of the contradictions between the public persona and the private man. 'Fighting Talk' documents, for the first time, Prescott's rise to power and the contribution he has made to Blair's modernised Labour Party. It explores the inevitable tensions that lie behind two very different driving forces at the top and what this could mean for a Labour government. Anecdotal, insightful and brilliantly lucid 'Fighting Talk' is a riveting account of an enigmatic man and a powerfully effective politician. Colin Brown is the chief Political Correspondent for the 'Independent' which he joined at its launch in 1986.He became a lobby journalist with the 'Yorkshire Post' before moving to the 'Guardian'.He has reported on Westminster since 1978. Thomas Hardy is one of Britain's best-loved writers, not least because of his exquisite descriptions of rural life in the 19thC.His accounts are based on observation and experience - he believed that:"At the dates represented in the various narrations things were like that in Wessex:the inhabitants lived in certain ways, engaged in certain occupations, kept alive certain customs, just as they are shown doing in these pages. . . " Even some apparently far-fetched incidents like wife-selling were taken from local newspaper accounts.Written with often painfully unsentimental realism, his accounts offer probably the most comprehensive and authentic picture of country life in all English literature. Hardy wrote fourteen novels, about a thousand poems, two poetic dramas, many articles and over forty not-so-short stories - a daunting body of work for any but the most dedicated student. In this beautiful book Joanna Cullen Brown has collected and linked passages from his extensive writings to provide a full but accessible picture of life in the English countryside in the late Georgian and Victorian era. These extracts are arranged according to theme; there are sections, for example,on folklore, medicine and disease, music, dialect, the law, power and poverty, farming, poaching and rural skills, religion and education, entertainments, eating and drinking and love. A brilliantly written and lovingly assembled picture of Dorset life - the country year, the people and their activities and attitudes. The book is further enhanced by the watercolours of Henry Moule. A close friend of Thomas Hardy,Moule painted many of the scenes that Hardy described, and indeed the two considered collaborating on a book of Dorset life.It was never done in their life time and Moule's paintings are here published for the first time. 'Gamlingay' tells the intriguing story of the generations of people who lived in this isolated and often lawless East Anglian village and, through them, the history of village life itself. Like the village, they were by and large unremarkable, but their lives and the times in which they lived were complex, tough and often revealing. What makes the characters in Gamlingay's history different is not that they lived in a world long since vanished, but that they lived in one of the best-documented villages in Britain. It is around this wealth of information that 'Gamlingay' is based. The book covers a period of some six hundred years, starting in 1279 at the height of the medieval open-field system, and ends in 1850 with the coming of Enclosure, and the death throes of that system. The immaculately researched narrative takes the reader from a village still living in the shadow of its Saxon predecessor through to the same village in the Victorian age. 'Gamlingay' is not history as such. It is a true story, beautifully written, based on hard historical evidence. As Rowland Parker stated in his Foreword '. . . .the history of one village is in a sense the history of them all. . . In respect of source material Jim Brown has been outstandingly fortunate, commendably diligent and truly wise.' T.E. Lawrence ws the first modern celebrity. From the moment, not long after his death in 1935,that Alexander Korda set out (to) make a film of his life - a dream that only became a reality in the hands of David Lean in the 1960s through Peter O'Toole's riveting performance - the almost mythic figure of the man on a camel enacting a heroic dream has captured the imagination of each succeeding generation. Now,seventy years from Lawrence's death, this visual biography takes us inside the mind of a man of extraordinary energy, ability and charisma who seemed to have everything in his hands only to throw it away, turning the rest of his life into an obsessive quest for anonymity and sanctuary. In Lawrence's own atmospheric photographs, haunting paintings of the desert and its peoples, evocative drawings and ephemera, all supported by quotations from his personal account of his experiences,we are able to enjoy the unfolding drama at first hand. Fiercely ambitious, yet fatally ambivalent about recognition,Lawrence made a brilliant academic career at Oxford before the First World War with a thesis on Crusader castles, before excavating at Carchemish while learning Arabic.Army intelligence work in Egypt in the early years of he war was the prelude to his paticipation in the great Arab Revolt against the Ottomans, fame at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 and work with Winston Churchill in the war's aftermath. But then came a relentlees,restless,self-abasing search for obscurity under assumed names, culminating in a motorbike crash and death at the age of only forty six. This book, and the major exhibition at the Imperial War Museum that it accompanies, combine to shed new light on this enigmatic, contradictory and troubled man - a character of universal appeal who lived on the edge in all that he did. 'Miles Aircraft since 1925' tells the story of a company founded by two brothers with the help of a handful of friends and enthusiasts.Starting with a single Avro 504K giving five shilling joyrides, they built up an organisation which, over the next twenty years, built some 7,000 aeroplanes.Throughout this period the whole firm was characterised by enthusiasm and drive which stemmed initially from F. G. Miles and resulted in a prodigious number of designs and projects, many of which were built but some of which never saw the light of day. One,for instance, was a contender for the Brabazon I contract for the first civil transport capable of operating a regular non-stop service between London and New York in both directions.Another was the design of what should of been the world's first supersonic aeroplane which, when nearing completion, was summarily cancelled. Owing to the successes in the King's Cup and other air races, the name of Miles is usually associated with light aeroplanes, but actually about 6,000 of the 7,000 aeroplanes built were of 700 hp or over. The first chapter, entitled 'Shoreham', describes the early 'barnstorming' days when the little band of enthusiasts eked out a precarious existence, never doubting for a moment that they would ultimately succeed in becoming designers and manufacturers in their own right. The second chapter, entitled 'Reading', describes the fifteen years during which the firm grew from a mere handful of men to an organisation with some 6,000 employees. Thereafter follows a description, illustrated by b/w drawings,b/w photographs and tables of dimensions, weights and performance of every design whether built or merely projected, produced by the firm - nearly 100 in all. Also included are details of numbers of aircraft built, racing successes, contractor's numbers, civil registrations, dates of first flights and, where known, the ultimate fate of the individual aircraft. The author has been associated with the building of Miles aircraft since the early days at Shoreham. Over forty years ago (then 1970) he was privileged to be admitted to that small band of enthusiasts who, under the inspiring leadership of F.G. Miles, were operating an Avro 504K,giving five-shilling joyrides, always with the ultimate object of learning to design and build aeroplanes. His job was to swing the propeller, take the money, hang on to the wingtip when taxi-ing and, between flights, to teach F.G. Miles mathematics. Many years later, when George Miles was appointed technical director and chief designer of Miles Aircraft Ltd.,he became his personal assistant. An unusual, intriguing association item, and uncommon - particularly with association signatures/dedications. Whilst the number of authoritative books about Miles aircraft is limited, this title /edn is much recommended, and is very highly sought after - even more so,with the company founder's dedications to one of it's important employees. Since April 2013,and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! 'The Art of Suicide' is a history of the visual representation of suicide or self- murder, from the ancient world with Greek scenes of the hero Ajax impaling himself on his sword,to its decriminalization in the twentieth century. After looking at instances of voluntary death in ancient Greece,Ron Brown discusses the contrast between the extraordinary absence of such events in early Christianity and the proliferation of images of biblical suicides in the late medieval Middle Ages era.He emphasizes how differing attitudes to suicide in the early modern world slowly merged, and pays particular attention to the one-time chasm between so-called heroic suicide and self-destruction as a 'crying crime'.Brown tracks the changes surrounding the perception of suicide into the pivotal Romantic era, with its notions of the 'man of feeling',ready to hurl himself into the abyss over a woman or an unfinishable poem.It is possible to see how, after the First World War,the meaning of death and attitudes towards suicide changed radically, and in time this led to its decriminalization. The 20th century in fact witnessed a growing ambivalence towards suicidal acts, which today are widely regarded either as expressions of a death-wish or as cries for help.Brown concludes with Warhol's picture of Marilyn Monroe and the videos taken by the notorious Dr Kevorkian. Brown's sensitive study reminds us that the history of self-murder and of its delineation is neither simple nor straightforward. Sir Francis Drake is one of history's enduring figures. His exploits as a mariner, explorer and military genius are fixed amongst those most celebrated in British history, while his deeds and enigmatic character continue to attract the attention of historian's the world over. Few of Drake's personal possessions survive and,of these, his drum is perhaps the best known but least studied artefact of almost any from that period.Charged with the essence of Drake's own bombastic character, this is the drum that thrilled his men and their captain with its call to arms.Famed also for it's mystic property in foretelling possible attack upon the English shore, and celebrated in Newbolt's eponymous poem,no detailed study has previously been made of the drum,or of the military flags (amongst the oldest surviving in Europe),also the property of Drake. FHM (For Him Magazine) was a British multinational men's lifestyle magazine that was published in several countries. It contained features such as the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World, which featured models, actresses, musicians,TV presenters, and reality stars. The magazine began publication in 1985 in the UK under the name For Him Magazine, changing its title to FHM in May 1992,although the full 'For Him Magazine' continued to be printed on the spine of each issue. The first woman to appear on the cover was Gina Davies in February 1993. Circulation expanded to newsagents as a quarterly by the Spring of 1987 and then monthly in 1994. EMAP Consumer Media bought the magazine in 1994 and it subsequently went on to dominate the UK men's market and began to expand internationally, being published in 32 countries. Each of FHM's international editions published yearly rankings for the sexiest women alive, based on public and editorial voting through the magazine's website. In the British edition for 2004,the winner was 22 year-old Britney Spears - whilst the rankings for the international editions vary widely, with many top-ranking women in some editions not appearing at all in others. The final printed issue of British FHM was produced in December 2015,after which the magazine moved to a digital-only platform Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! One of the more SCARCE and uncommoner titles from this celebrated series. Clifford and Rosemary Ellis - East Anglia -based artists - were the chosen illustrators for most of the 100 titles in the then 'New Naturalist' series (which also includes 22 single species monographs) - 2 exceptions were 'The Broads' and the 'Snowdonia National Park' issue/edns which had photographic dw/djs. Considering that they were originally contracted to produce dw/djs for only the first four titles of the then new series, their distinctive lithographic artwork was so popular - they worked on all the series books until their deaths in the mid-1980s. The diurnal raptors are among the most arresting and dramatic of British bird species, from the magnificent and immense Golden Eagle of the Highlands to the more widespread but equally spectacular peregrine falcon and the frequent and adaptable kestrel of motorways and urban ledges. Leslie Brown's account of our 15 resident,7 vagrant and 2 migrant species of eagles, falcons, hawks and vultures in Britain presents a great mass of scientific information about these birds in a manner as attractive to the general reader as to the dedicated ornithologist. Each of the resident species is discussed in detail - its status, past and present; its feeding and hunting behaviour: its life history; its breeding behaviour; migration and the threats to its survival. Then the biology of the birds of prey, changes in their habitat and status, their food habits, breeding behaviour, their territories and populations are examined in depth in separate chapters. One issue of particular interest and importance is the question of whether certain species do real harm to man's interests, and the related threats to their survival - a threat posed chiefly by game- keepers, assisted by casual walkers, rock climbers and photographers and, additionally,by pesticides. An acknowledged world authority on birds of prey - co-author with Dean Amadon of 'Eagles,Hawks and Falcons of the World', and author of many other books besides - Leslie Brown is immensely enthusiastic; and the many tables, maps, figures and bibliography are all indicative of the thoroughness of his research. Also illustrated with 40 superb b/w photographs. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact seller, because of the weight/value of this item for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
