Orkney has been described as a land where the lives of living people turn into legend.George Mackay Brown elaborates this idea in his introduction to a collection of its tales: 'In a small community, enclosed by sea and sky and fields,it is possible to see man's life as a whole. It has a clear outline, and becomes larger than life.' The islander's love of legends extended beyond a natural curiosity about the lives of their neighbours - the laird, the minister, smugglers and lovers - and the many mysterious phenomena around them - standing stones, green knowes, the scree-littered hills of Hoy.Into more elemental regions their gift for story-making led them, their imaginations being challenged alike by the taste of the sea,the connection between music and corn and death, the seal's particular love of music. Beside the fish-oil lamps, through the winter evenings of many centuries, the Orkney people developed their unique art,to which George Mackay Brown - master storyteller, poet, and himself a native of Orkney - now pays tribute in a language as powerful and haunting as the landscape which was the source of its inspiration. 'The story of the American West has all the elements of the Iliad and Odyssey. It is a heroic world of quests and wars,of journeyings into remote lands,of daring hunts, last stands, and legendary exploits. It is an epic of mighty deeds,of triumphs and failures,of inconsistent heroes and heroines.' In 'The Westerners' Dee Brown follows the frontiersmen into this heroic world. His earliest guides are the Spaniards, the first Europeans to explore the American Southwest in the sixteenth century. But from here, instead of writing another chronological history of the opening of America's West,Mr Brown tells the story through the experiences of a few influential or representative Westerners - white men and white women and Indians - people like Jedediah Strong Smith,Susan Magoffin,Brigham Young and Sitting Bull. It is primarily a story of movement - of the early mappers of water-routes for the fur traders,of travellers on treks and trails,of gold-rushers,of the builders and operators of stagecoach and mail services, telegraphs and rail roads, and not least of the Indians they pushed before them.It is also a tale of invasion. Many of the explorers were motivated by greed rather than by adventure; developers imagined that Indian land was theirs for the taking. There were those who were on friendly terms with the Indians: George Caitlin, for instance, whose paintings of Indian life provide some of the 32 color and 120 black-and-white illustrations. But generally the spirit of the pioneer was embodied in Theodore Roosevelt who,as Dee Brown writes, mixed a self-reliance and hearty friendliness towards his own kind with a deep suspicion of different peoples, used naked force to resolve disputes and gain objectives, and who as President did much to imprint these traits into the American ethos where they endure to this day. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! James Billington, formerly a pub entertainer and then a barber, had been single-minded in his determination to secure the post of executioner for London and the Home Counties. But did he really feel he was primarily a benefit to society and justice,or were his reasons for wanting the position far more personal? Three of his sons,Thomas,William and John, followed in his footsteps and together the family were responsible for 235 executions in Great Britain between 1884 and 1905. They hanged many notorious murderers, but equally fascinating is the story of the family. 'Billington: Victorian Executioner' provides a complete account of the stories behind James Billington's 151 executions, as well as introducing the reader to the real man behind the rope - a man whose business was death. This fascinating biography is an exciting addition to any true crime bookshelf or collection. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 15 year age and nature, i.e. an unused companion, reference book.It really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness, brightness, crispness and uncommon availabilty. This book analyses the tactics and techniques of the armies that struggled for supremacy in Europe from the end of the French Revolution to Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. Book is divided into 5 chapters covering the main elements of Revolutionary and Napoleonic warfare: infantry, cavalry, generalship, artillery and siege warfare and naval combat. Each chapter features four battles to demonstrate the strrengths, pitfalls and characteristics of the style of warfare. The first chapter considers the crucial role of infantry by examining the battles of Rivoli(1797), Maida (1806), Auerstadt (1806) and Waterloo (1815). The uses and merits of light infantry, elite infantry formations (such as the Imperial Guard),line versus column, and the use of defensive squares, are explored. The second chapter examines the importance of cavalry as both reconnaissance and shock troops, with accounts of famous actions by elite cavalry at Somosierra (1808) and Borodino (1812) turning the tide of the battle.Using examples such as Austerlitz (1805) and Wagram (1809),the third chapter discusses the command structure and tactics of the era and investigates how the great generals were able to combine cavalry, infantry and artillery effectively on the battlefield. The fourth chapter looks at the employment of massed artillery as a key component on the battlefield - for example,at Friedland (1807) - the revolutionary use of horse artillery and the siege tactics employed at great sieges such as Badajoz (1812) and Hamburg (1813). The final chapter explores the role of naval warfare, examing key encounters at the Nile (1798), Trafalgar (1805) and Lake Erie (1813). Using specially-commissioned colour and b/w artworks to illustrate the battles, equipment and tactics of the era,'Fighting Techniques of the napoleonic Age' explores the methods by which the great commanders of the era - such as Napoleon, Wellington and Nelso - won battles and campaignes, and why others were less successful. The book is an essential companion for anyone interested in warfare in the Napoleonic era. Paul Bruce was a tough, idealistic young trooper in the SAS when he was despatched to Northern Ireland. His top-secret mission:to execute unarmed IRA suspects in cold blood. His story, told with chilling candour, gives an astonishing insight into the role of the SAS in the bitter conflict of Northern Ireland. It is also a devastating indictment of British government policy in the Province. Bruce and three SAS comrades shot down one terrified victim after another, leaving their bodies to be buried in deep, unmarked woodland graves. The soldiers grew their hair long, wore civilian clothes and drove ordinary-looking cars. But they always carried pistols and sub-machine guns. They worked to the direct command of the Intelligence Services based at 39th Infantry Headquarters in Lisburn. Their task:to destabilise the IRA.Their orders:to kill.Their secret code sign:NEMESIS.The squad had been trained for the honourable tasks of covert action and secret warfare.Slowly they grew bitter at the sordidness of their terrible assignment. But worse was to follow.Britain's frustrated military leaders next ordered Bruce and his squad to foment sectarian violence by shooting down young men on the streets of Roman Catholic areas. In this historic, deeply disturbing book the author describes many of his victims and produces maps to show where the bodies lie secretly buried. This is not simply a breathtaking story of Special Forces soldiering, of treachery and betrayal at the highest level, but a chronicle of the mental breakdown of crack SAS troops ordered to carry out the dirtiest job in a secret war.It is also the tale of the extraordinary inner struggle of one man, a man devoted to the SAS and its fine principles of professionalism and obedience.A man who finally found the moral courage to rebel.

The World's Greatest Detective becomes the world's greatest explainer of physics in baffling cases of science gone mad,and nature gone murderous! In this suspenseful volume Colin Bruce has recreated the atmosphere of the original Sherlock Holmes stories to explain the most fascinating principles of physics in a new, exciting way - through twelve completely original adventures of London's most famous fictional inhabitant. In this face-paced collection,Sherlock Holmes, ably assisted by the faithful Watson,Professor Challenger, and other beloved Conan Doyle characters, must unravel the paradoxes and principles of classical and quantum physics in order to solve a crime, prevent an assassination,or rescue a damsel in distress. In the title story, years before Schrodinger put his uncertain cat into its deadly box,Holmes and Watson discover that a harmless lottery may have catastrophic quantum effects on their landlady's poor tabby. In the Case of the Pre-Atomic Doctor, the detectives can only save a lonely widow from the chicanery of a charlatan by anticipating Einstein's discovery of random molecular jumps of Brownian motion. In the Case of the Missing Energy, the arrogant, quirky Professor Challenger is called upon to solve the eerie thermodynamics puzzle of divers found dead of heatstroke at the bottom of an icy sea.And in the Case of the Energetic Anarchist,Holmes and Watson must brave the inevitable laws of nuclear physics to stop a terrorist from setting off the ultimate weapon. These and eight more physics paradoxes and conundrums will astound and instruct the curious armchair physicist or detective. For while they read just like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own legendary mystery stories, these suspenseful new tales have a dual purpose: to entertain, and to explain the fascinating laws of physics the way that the great detective would have done. They succeed in both objectives so brilliantly, you won't even realise you've learned something until it's too late! Colin Bruce is a physicist and science writer living in Oxford,England. He is an expert in physics paradoxes, and a lover of mysteries. During the 1750s, rival European colonists sought allies amongst Native American tribes.Abenaki warbands raided the English settlements and participated in the infamous massacre at Fort William Henry - an incident immortalised in "The Last of the Mohicans". This episode fuelled an escalating cycle of revenge that reached a bloody climax two years later when Robert Rogers and his rangers were ordered deep within enemy territory to destroy the Abenaki village of St Francis, which they did with ruthless efficiency. However the raiders endured a nightmare journey as they struggled home. Several were caught by vengeful pursuers and tortured to death; others resorted to cannibalism rather than starve in the wilderness. Rogers' raid was celebrated by Anglo-American colonists, and its leader is credited with founding the 'special forces' tradition in the US Army.Others view the St Francis raid as an eighteenth-century My Lai massacre,in which helpless men and women were butchered.Eschewing prejudices,Stephen Brumwell deploys vivid prose and meticulous research to reconstruct this controversial and dramatic episode from America's violent frontier past. Originally serialised in 2 parts in 'Amazing Stories' December,1966 and in February,1967 respectively. When mankind colonized the stars, they travelled out from Earth in two directions - to Centaurus and its Southern Hemisphere neighbors and to Ursa Major and the constellations around Polaris. And strange to say the humans who settled on those various worlds began to develop into two differing and antagonistic types. For Ray Mallin, born under the surface of Mars in the sparse colony of Earth's inhospitable old neighbor, neither the anarchic 'Bears' nor the autocratic 'Centaurs' commanded his loyalty. So when secret agents of both galactic groupings suddenly focused their unwelcome attention on his most recent star-piloting mission, he knew only that something of vast significance was up - and that he unknowingly was the key to it. The Crutch of Memory.**

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG-.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.4-colour block, pictorial illustrated upper panel and spine/backstrip,with red, yellow and white letters,by Barbara Walton,b/w publishers advert+critics' reviews of other titles to rear panel.Minimal shelf- wear to bottom edges, but some creasing to top edges with some minimal bumping and reciprocal creasing and a couple of small nicks with minimal loss to head of spine/ backstrip.Dw/dj internally darkened to some edges with an internal water-stain (?) to head of spine/backstrip which has bled through - though the boards are unaffected.Top edge lightly aged and lightly dust-soiled with some miniscule foxing; fore-edge slightly more darker and aged but again with miniscule foxing; contents bright, tight and generally clean with minimal sporadic foxing.Virtually unblemished, light tan paper-covered boards with bright, crisp, stamped black ink letters to spine/backstrip and generally clean, plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,9-246pp. Hugh Collins came to Greece for a holiday. He was twenty-five, personable and successful, and drove across Europe to be a tourist in this welcoming but inscrutable land.Quite casually he came together with Wendy Drake, young and pretty, competently hitch-hiking.She, a happy, natural person, was deeply puzzled by Hugh's withdrawn and complex emotions and with single-minded purpose set out to find the answer to them, because she hated things that stunted people and made them miserable.By the time she had succeeded, by the time she had shown Hugh a truth he had hidden from himself since childhood, even Wendy's gaeity and self-assurance were reduced to tears.Hugh and Wendy were made loving prisoners by the harsh land of Greece, where the people were and remain civilised to a depth northerners find incredible. For Hugh, the arid personal failure behind his outward success could be rectified only by his final response to the austere command made by Greece: know thyself! This book can be read in several ways.A love story in an exotic setting,a travel book recording a voyage of self- discovery,a psychological novel treating a major sexual problem with insight and sympathy, but as any of these it is to read with increasing excitement and pleasure. One of Britain's most prominent and prolific authors in the sci-fi genre - converted to it by early readings of H. G. Wells - he had written and published his first novel by 17.His American debut was with 'Thou Good and Faithful' in Astounding,in 1953.In 1958 he was actively involved in the CND,subsequently touring many countries to further its cause. It was from a visit to Greece in 1960,that this novel is inspired. This is the author's first general and non sci-fi novel. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It really is an exceptional example for its cleanliness and brightness. It was during the Victorian era that the first obituaries appeared in The Times, documenting the lives of the great and the good.Nearly two centuries later our evaluation of many of these historical figures has changed, and deserves reassessment. Obituaries of some of the most significant and influential scientists, social reformers, composers, writers and politicians of the Victorian era - including Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Charles Dickens, William Gladstone, Karl Marx, Louis Pasteur, Christina Rosetti, Thomas Cook and Oscar Wilde - have been selected by Ian Brunskill, the Obituaries Editor of The Times. Professor Andrew Sanders has edited each obituary, with insightful commentary to reveal the subtexts and omissions of those early accounts. Arranged according to the date of their death - beginning with Thomas Arnold and finishing with Sarah Bernhardt - many are illustrated with rare pictures, these great lives offer a fascinating analysis of one of the most interesting eras in history, examining the society, people, values, and, indirectly, the legacy of the men and women who lived through, and influenced, the Victorian world. Bright, clean,sharp-cornered,publisher's original, plain black cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn,viipp+1-180pp [paginated] includes contents list/table, foreword (by Sir Steve Redgrave),25 chapters,24pp contemporary colour action photographs from races,in 3 blocks of 8pp apice, between pp56/7,pp136/7 and pp216/7 respectively, appendix, index, acknowledgements, plus [unpaginated] half-title page and SIGNED+dedicated title-page and dedication. THE LONDON MARATHON salutes 25 years of the incredible physical and mental challenge that lies at the very heart of marathon running. It begins with the author standing on the start line at Blackheath for the very first London Marathon in March 1981.And it ends 26 miles and 25 yeas later,as the author emerges, still running, past Buckingham Palace and on through the miles and memories to the finish. The marathon is at once the greatest trial and the greatest motivation for millions of runners. The very word 'marathon',rooted in Greek legend, has echoes of heroism. This is the story not just of the world's greatest runners, but also of those thousands of ordinary men and women who make up the mass fields of the great city marathons. Some of the runners are young and strong.Others are older, but defiantly determined not to be overtaken by time. All of them yearn to find a new meaning in life,to tackle a distance that both excites and terrifies them. From the legend of Pheidippides and the mystery of Spiridon Louis - who won the first modern Olympic marathon in 1896 - to the agony of Paula Radcliffe, reduced to tears on the long road to Athens more than a century later, this is a story of dreams, pain, struggle and achievement. The courage and the craziness of characters who for 25 years have run the streets of London, have turned this race into the greatest marathon in the world. 'THE LONDON MARATHON' is a testament to their endeavour, and to the spirit that leads them each spring to tackle their own surburban Everest. This is their story. John Bryant has worked as a Fleet Street journalist since 1971.For a decade he was deputy editor of The Times. He is a former editor of the Sunday Correspondent and The European and is currently consultant editor of the Daily Mail. Yul Brynner electrified three generations of theatre and movie goers with his portrayal of the tragic and despotic King of Siam in 'The King and I',a role he played in almost 4,500 performances over thirty-five years. It was a role he made his own in every sense, for Yul was as much in love with power - and as much a victim of its illusions - as the King he played so brilliantly on stage. In this deeply personal and loving memoir,Rock Brynner comes to terms with the amalgam of autocratic star, legendary womanizer and extravagant egotist that was his father. He solves the mystery of Yul's origins and separates the truths from the fantasies in his life and career. This is the story of a man who regarded his only son,Rock,as the extension of his genius into the next generation - a burden no son could carry.Yet,after all their clashes and reconciliations,Rock was there to hold Yul's hand as he died.[October, 1985 in New York City,New York.] Intimates like Judy Garland,Marlene Dietrich,Marilyn Monroe and Ingrid Bergman fill the pages of this remarkable and moving book.We see Yul smoking opium with Jean Cocteau; making and breaking mariages, deals and friendships; and moving restlessly from one film, one love affair, to the next. All his life Yul created a romantic persona for the world; now,at last,Rock Brynner sets the record straight and pays the tribute of honesty to a magical actor,a difficult father, and an extraordinary enigma. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! These men and the beliefs held about women at the time helped to shape Mary's life. She was trained to be a dutiful wife and at the age of eighteen Mary married the French king, Louis XII, thirty-four years her senior.          When her husband died three months after the marriage,Mary took charge of her life and shaped her own destiny. As a young widow, Mary blossomed. This was the opportunity to show the world the strong, self-willed, determined woman she always had been. She remarried for love and at great personal risk to herself. She loved and respected Katherine of Aragon and despised Anne Boleyn again, a dangerous position to take.      Author Sarah Bryson has returned to primary sources, state papers and letters, to unearth the truth about this intelligent and passionate woman. This is the story of Mary Tudor, told through her own words for the first time.        Please contact the seller, particularly ALL overseas buyers, for correct [insured,or uninsured at own risk] shipping/P+p quotes BEFORE placing your order, especially if ordering any multiples.                          N.B. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.No owner inscrptn, no price-clip to dw/dj.Colour,pictorial art-work illustrated dw/dj by David Clark with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to dw/dj's top edge - no nicks or tears present - and lightly grubbed/ marked rear wrap.Top+fore-edges bright and clean, contents bright, tight and clean. Bill Bryson has the rare knack of being out of his depth wherever he goes - even (perhaps especially) in the land of his birth. This became all too apparent when, after nearly two decades in England, the world's best-loved travel writer upped sticks with Mrs Bryson, little Jimmy et al. and returned to live in the country he had left as a youth.Of course there were things Bryson missed about Blighty - the Open University, Boxing Day, Branston Pickle and irony, to name but a few.But any sense of loss was countered by the joy of rediscovering some of the forgotten treasures of his childhood: the glories of a New England autumn;the pleasingly comical sight of oneself in shorts, and motel rooms where you can generally count on being wakened in the night by a piercing shriek and the sound of a female voice pleading, "Put the gun down, Vinnie, I'll do anything you say." When an old friend asked him to write a weekly dispatch from New Hampshire for the Mail on Sunday's Night and Day magazine, Bill firmly turned him down.So firm was he, in fact, that gathered here is eighteen months' worth of his popular columns about the strangest of phenomena - the American way of life.Whether discussing the dazzling efficiency of the garbage disposal unit, the exoticism of having your groceries bagged for you, the jaw-slackening direness of American TV or the smug pleasure of being able to eat beef without having to wonder if when you rise from the table you will walk sideways into the wall, Bill Bryson brings his inimitable brand of bemused wit to bear on the world's richest and craziest country. Bill Bryson's irrevent and hilarious journey through the beloved island nation he called home for two decades. From Downing Street to Loch Ness, this is a delightful look at the United Kingdom. Before New York Times bestselling author Bill Bryson wrote The Road to Little Dribbling, he took this delightfully irreverent jaunt around the unparalleled floating nation of Great Britain, which has produced Marmite,a military hero whose dying wish ws to be kissed by a fellow named Hardy, zebra crossings, Shakespeare, Twiggie Winkie's Farm, and places with names like Farleigh Wallop,Titsey and Shellow Bowells, people who said 'Mustn't grumble',and Gardeners' Question Time. In a journey down the streets of Shakespeare's time, Bryson brings to life the hubbub of Elizabethan England and delights in details of his folios and quartos, poetry and plays. Four generations of Brandon men lived and served six English kings, the most famous being Charles Brandon,Duke of Suffolk, best friend and brother-in-law to King Henry VIII. Yet his family had a long history tied closely to the kings of the Wars of the Roses back to Henry VI.Charles Brandons father,Sir William Brandon, supported Henry Tudors claim on the throne and became his standard bearer, dying at the Battle of Bosworth.Charles's uncle,Sir Thomas Brandon, was Henry VII's Master of the Horse, one of the three highest positions within the court.Charles's grandfather had ties with Henry VI,Edward IV and Richard III. These men held important offices, made great sacrifices, walked the fine line between being loyal courtiers and traitors, and even gave their lives, all in the name of loyalty to the king they served.                                      No more shall the Brandon name be an obscure reference in archives. It is time for them to emerge from the shadows of history.   Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk (c. 1484 – 22 August,1545) was an English military leader and courtier.Through his third wife,Mary Tudor, he was brother-in-law to King Henry VIII. Bryson has made his living out of traveling and then writing about it. In 'The Lost Continent' he re-created the road trips of his childhood; in 'Neither Here nor There' he retraced the route he followed as a young backpacker traversing Europe. When he decided to return home to America, he made a farewell walking tour of the British countryside and produced 'Notes from a Small Island.' - see my book ID rja1146624 - Once back on American soil and safely settled in New Hampshire,Bryson once again hears the siren call of the open road - only this time it's a trail. The Appalachian Trail,to be exact. In 'A Walk in the Woods' Bill Bryson tackles what is,for him, an entirely new subject: the American wilderness. Accompanied only by his old college buddy Stephen Katz,Bryson starts out one March morning in north Georgia, intending to walk the entire 2,100 miles to trail's end atop Maine's Mount Katahdin. If nothing else,'A Walk in the Woods' is proof positive that the journey is the destination. See my book IDs' rja1146624 and rja1146824 for UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus of 'Notes FROM A SMALL ISLAND' and 'Notes FROM A BIG COUNTRY' respectively. With perception, style, wit and a penetratingly clear eye, she brings vividly to life this remarkable man and his times.                    John Buchan's name is known across the world for The Thirty-Nine Steps. In the past hundred years the classic thriller has never been out of print and has inspired numerous adaptations for film, television, radio and stage, beginning with the celebrated version by Alfred Hitchcock.  Yet there was vastly more to 'JB'. He wrote more than a hundred books - fiction and non-fiction - and a thousand articles for newspapers and magazines. He was a scholar, antiquarian, barrister, colonial administrator, journal editor, literary critic, publisher, war correspondent, director of wartime propaganda, member of parliament and imperial proconsul - given a state funeral when he died, a deeply admired and loved Governor-General of Canada.  His teenage years in Glasgow's Gorbals, where his father was the Free Church minister, contributed to his ease with shepherds and ambassadors, fur-trappers and prime ministers. His improbable marriage to a member of the aristocratic Grosvenor family means that this account of his life contains, at its heart, an enduring love story. Ursula Buchan is one of those rare gardening writers who is read with pleasure by people who have never picked up a trowel or pruned a rose - in fact by people who don't have gardens at all.She puts gardening into a wider perspective,a million miles from the depressingly familiar gardening-by-numbers approach. 'Good in a Bed' contains wisdom accumulated over two decades, from practical advice on plants, garden design and pests - not to mention how to make a cricket wicket or rugby pitch - to thoughts on horticultural trends and fashions, like the development of dwarf varieties and the encouragement of wildlife. There are reviews of books, gardens and flower shows (including Chelsea, of course) and fascinating information on gardening history and gardening people. In this delightful and witty book,Ursula Buchan shares with us her own experiences and preferences: her dislike of herb gardens and timid planting, her battles with plastic netting and problems with doing the church flowers. As well as being a goldmine of practical information,'Good in a Bed' gives an intriguing picture of the development of gardening during the 1980s and 1990s.This is a perfect present for any gardener - armchair, green or mature. Author's 5th 'Jennings' title. A highly collected and prolific children's book author, and will be an important and welcome addition to the Buckeridge/schoolboy fiction canon. It is a good thing to keep a diary; and an even better one to safeguard its secret by writing them in code. But the trouble with Jennings' was that it made his most innocent entries read like the secret dossier of some Eastern-European spy organisation. many hilarious incidents of the Easter term at Linbury Court School are recorded for posterity in the ink-splashed pages of Jennings Diary. There was,for instance, the astounding excvation of an alleged Roman chariot-wheel; Darbishire's illfated attempt, when laden with valuable glassware,to ride a bicycle fitted with sliding saddle; and Mr Wilkins' anguish and frustration at finding his missing mark book at the bottom of Jennings trunk. Another 'Jennings' is really something to look forward to,and Anthony Buckeridge's numerous young admirers will find in this story everything they have come to expect in a 'Jennings' book. This larger-than-life-size schoolboy character first became popular on B.B.C. Children's Hour, and his somewhat erratic career at Linbury Court School has proved to be every bit as amusing in print as on the air. Anthony Buckeridge,British author, born London 1912 and probably best known for his Jennings and Rex Milligan schoolboy novels. He taught in a prep school, having his first success as a writer with a handful of adult plays broadcast on BBC Radio. These were then followed by a series of radio scripts featuring the schoolboy,Jennings, who subsequently featured in two dozen books, beginning with 'Jennings Goes to School' (1950).He has also written four novels featuring the grammar schoolboy,Rex Milligan. Salomon van Abbe, brother of Joseph van Abbe.Born in Amersterdam,July 31,1883 - d.Feb 28,1955 in London but lived in England from an early age.He was also known as Jack van Abbé or Jack Abbey, and was an artist, etcher and illustrator of books and magazines. He studied at local state schools, the People's Palace, Toynbee Hall,Central School of Art, and at the London County Council School of Photo-engraving and Lithography at Bolt Court, where he met, amongst others Edmund Blampied,Robert Charles Peter and John Nicolson - all fellow etchers.Although he was noted for his drypoints of the legal profession and the law, much of his commercial was to design the dust jackets for books from for publishers as diverse as Ward,Lock & Co,Collins,Thomas Nelson,Methuen,John Murray Hamish Hamilton and Herbert Jenkins. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Author's 7th Jennings title. A highly collected and prolific children's book author, and will be an important and welcome addition to the Buckeridge/schoolboy fiction canon. When Jennings came to look back upon it, it seemed that the whole term had billowed along in a torrent of ups and downs.Even the simplest problems develop in alarming fashion when Jennings tries to solve them, and though Darbishire does his best to steer clear of trouble there is little hope for him so long as Jennings' fertile brain is at work. It is small wonder, then, that the preparations for the end-of-term concert give rise to scenes of turmoil and confusion when Jennings takes the stage. "Jennings and Darbishire. . . .It would be!" says Mr Carter, when he finds them accidently locked in the out-of-bounds boiler room - or discovers them travelling by bus on the last stages of a cross-country run. However, the term,so full of excitement and humour, finishes up with the boys on a crest of the wave. And that, Jennings maintained,waS what really mattered. Anthony Buckeridge, who has endeared these characters of Linbury Court School to a wide public, both through his books and on the air,has given us another wonderful story in the true Jennings tradition.
