Something is wrong with professional cricket in England. Three years after the great Ashes victory in 2005,the England cricket team has reverted to type.In 2007,it lost three out of four Test series and got nowhere in the ICC World Cup and Twenty20 tournaments. Since 1987,Australia has thrashed England 34 games to nine in Tests and won four World Cups to England's none (then 1998). Today (2008),Australia has five cricket stadiums with more than 30,000 seats to England's none.Their team is accessible to all on (Australia) Channel Nine, but England's fans have to pay £400 a year for/to Sky. Why was the 2005 resurgence so short-lived? Why has England's performance been generally mediocre since the mid-1980's? Why is cricket on Sky and not on (UK) Channel 4 or the BBC? Why are so many of England's players injured? Why is Lord's so exclusive and expensive? Why does the fan on the back cover of this dw/dj have to go to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to watch her team? Who actually runs this game and what are they trying to do? Using Australia as the model and inspiration, 'Pommies' explains what is wrong with England cricket and presents a radical plan to improve the national team and open up the game for fans. Once you have read this book, you will never see England cricket the same way again. BUCKTON, HENRY:
POLITICIANS AT WAR: Post-war Members of Parliament recall their war-time military service.

Imprint: UK.BARNSLEY,S. YORKS.LEO COOPER/PEN & SWORD BOOKS LTD.,2003
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE+/FINE+.No owner inscrptn but price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, montage'd monochrome photographic illustrated dw/dj panels, with orange+white lettering to front and spine, black lettering to rear panel; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+ fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean, sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK, 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,1-280pp [paginated] includes author's introduction,Parts One to Eight, 16pp contemporary autobiographical b/w portrait photographs in 1 block, between pp120/21,a bibliography and an index; plus [unpaginated] half- title+title pages, contents list/table,and an MPs'featured list/table. Not all that long ago,in common with the rest of the population, the majority of Members of Parliament had at one time or another worn the service uniforms.Today the situation is very different indeed and the lack of military experience among our law-makers and opinion-formers is all too often apparent - and not necessarily beneficially. What is not in doubt is that service in the Armed Forces, particularly in wartime, has a long lasting, even life-long, influence on the individual concerned. The memories of training, comradeship, fear, discipline, hardship and, yes, humour are enduring. The war generation now is inevitably and sadly diminishing and Henry Buckton has set out to record the prominent politician's experiences and impressions. The result is both refreshing and fascinating.Determined to cast the net widely,he has gathered accounts of those from right across the political divide and from all three services covering very varied theatres.By nature, politicians tend to be articulate and,as a result, they tell their stories fluently yet with welcome and, dare it be said, surprising humility.A number of those who share their exploits and feelings with the reader are household names including prime ministers (Heath and Callaghan) and very senior figures (Jenkins and Healey),while others will be less familiar. But all have superb stories to tell which will certainly interest and often surprise the reader. 'Politician's At War' is a forceful reminder that, when nations fight each other, citizens of all classes and political views get caught up and,if they survive, their lives are changed for ever. It is a humbling reminder that whatever may have happened in the House of Commons, these men once risked their lives in a common cause and we have every reason to be thankful to them and their comrades. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact seller, because of the weight/value of this item for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

The Missing Adventures series was introduced by Virgin Publishing in July,1994 as the demand for the books showed that new, original novels featuring past Doctors would be as popular as the 'New Adventures' series featuring the 7th Doctor.Thirty-three original novels were produced and this title is the 31st novel of that series.Featuring the 4th Doctor,Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, this book is now out-of-print and with an extremely low print run and with no reprint,is a scarce and highly sought after title.See also rja2183,and rja2184 for other titles in the same series. 'As a member of an inferior race, you either work to serve the cause of Averon,or die.' Sarah is marooned on a slave world where the only escape is death.Harry is caught in the middle of an interplanetary invasion, and has to combine medicine with a desperate mission. And the Doctor lands on a world so secret it does not even have a name. Why have the TARDIS crew been scattered across the stars? What terrible accident could have wiped the Doctor's memory? And what could interest the Time Lords in this war-torn sector of space? At the heart of a star-spanning conspiracy lies an ancient quest: people have been making weapons since the dawn of time - but perhaps someone has finally discovered the ultimate device of death. What price loyalty? If loyalty were even modestly rewarded in football today,Matthew Le Tissier would not have been persistently pilloried as 'unambitious' for wishing to to remain with Southampton. So what price TED BATES who has been at The Dell ever since 1937? How unanbitious can you get? Arriving as a player on his 19th birthday,he has since filled eight different posts at The Dell, becoming President in 1998,shortly before his 80th birthday. But some things haven't changed.Former team-mates,players he managed, later managers and other staff, directors and his family, all testify to his enduring ommitment to the Saints and his passion for football - as a game demanding devotion and hard work. And loyalty if you can get it. This book tells the story of Ted Bates's first 60 seasons with the Saints. It is a story of working to overcome limited resources - first his own and then the Club's. As a player,Ted Bates had no hugely enviable talent, apart from an ability to jump higher that you ould expect of a 5ft 9ins inside-forward.And yet he was much admired by team-mates for finding space to receive the ball, for getting it accurayely to his wingers and, most of all,for diving in where it hurt to score 'impossible' goals. As a manager,he brought Southanpton from Division Three to Division One on next to nothing, starting with an astute three-for-one deal in 1959 that complemented his successful youth policy. Then, beginning with Ron Davies in 1966,he found the blend to take the Saints into Europe. Since handing over in 1973 to Lawrie McMeneny, he has continued to go to every home game amd most away games - forever seizing opportunities to talk football with a succession of heirs and to give incoming directors an induction to what the game is all about. Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age,and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior dw/dj faults described that prevents a higher grading. 'The Road TO RACQUE + Rouen!' marks Tim Bulmer's authorial debut,he has turned his hand from the figurative to the literary with some considerable assurance and produced a unique and highly entertaining study of one of his great loves.....France. The book loosely follows the author's boozy progress from region to region, taking in the motley crew of characters he meets enroute. These range from the deliciously flirtatious Madame Frou Frou, with her impressive decollage and insatiable appetites,to the rather more down to earth wine growers and estate workers who labours are responsible for the many of our most memorable evenings out (and forgettable mornings after....) Tangents and diversions are frequent, and the author's great love for the country, the food, the cars, the women, and most of all the wine,is presented in his usual wicked, and irresistible style. Featuring over 100 designs of etchings and new watercolours from the Winner of the Fine Arts Trade Guild' Best Selling Original Print Artist Award,2001.'The Road to Racque and Rouen is both an entertaining romp, and a superb collector's item. Panther Books proudly presents the first independent Western evaluation of the Russian space programme and the flight of Major Yuri Gagarin - the first man into space. This is not simply Gagarin's life story; it is the history of the whole Soviet effort in this field, with its problems, its successes and its failures. For the first time: Gagarin himself,in the first private interview that the Russians allowed with Western journalists, describes his feelings during his historic 108-minute orbit of the world. The answers to the questions: Why are the Russians ahead? What will they do next? What is their national policy on space research? Why is the West behind? Russian scientists give their opinion of the U.S. efforts, comparing them with their own.Russian biologists depict fully the extraordinary training of animals and men for space flight.Details are given of the construction and equipment of their space-ships,together with an account of the experiments which led up to final designs and the first prototype of a manned rocket. In this fascinating and important book, the authors have uncovered and presented the facts behind the most momentous event in history. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 25+ year-old age and nature, i.e an ephemeral paperback Proof copy.It is only the minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite that,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults usually present in a decades old paperback. Seems pretty scarce as a UK proof and therefore highly collectable with it preceding the US issue. America's finest crime writer returns to the bayou country with a wrenching story of racial violence, class warfare and the cruelty that privilege often brings. The forty-year-old crucifixion of a prominent labor leader named Jack Flynn remains an unsolved atrocity in New Iberia, Louisianna. And when Flynn's daughter Megan,a photojournalist drawn to controversial subjects, returns,it becomes clear to Robicheaux that her family's blood-stained past will not stay buried for long. With nail-biting suspense, dead-on dialogue and characters as memorable as the Louisianna setting they call home, this tale of historic violence and soiled redemption finds James Lee Burke at the top of his form.Another Detective Dave Robicheaux novel. No visitor to Scotland can escape for a moment the powerful presence of the past. On every side castles, kirks, monuments, even the echoing emptiness of glens and lochs, speak of great events - often tragic events, yet leavened by the happier contributions of whisky distilleries, golf courses, and a long tradition of hospitality and wry humour. In this book John Burke brilliantly interweaves history and topography. Scotland is divided chapter by chapter into regions so that the reader, wherever he is,can look around him at the very stage on which the drama on the page was enacted.Yet the book as a whole presents a complete and compelling readable narrative. It encourages the visitor - even the armchair traveller,in spirit wandering into a far, fascinating land - to explore beyond the obvious sights and understand how the present scene relates to past events and people: past, yet still vividly alive. No other book, whether guidebook or formal history, could convey the reader quite so directly to Scotland's heart. The Beales,a strange, reclusive family living on the edge of Dartmoor in Ashill House, consist of Simon,an old man entirely withdrawn from active life,Nicholas and Gertrude, perpetually hitting the bottle and playing war games, and the painter Edward, who takes long walks along the moors in search of artistic inspiration. The only one with any drive or ambition is Gertrude's husband Frank Vicary, and all of his time is absorbed by the task of running the family business. When a murder rocks their local community,no-one has any reason for suspecting one of the Beales, until Detective Chief Inspector Wycliffe arrives on the case and finds his investigation leading him up the Beales's garden path. William John Burley (b. 1st August,1914 – d. 15th November,2002) was a British crime writer, best known for his books featuring the detective Charles Wycliffe, which became the basis of the popular television series Wycliffe, shown from 1994 to 1998.Burley was born in Falmouth, Cornwall. Bright, crisp, clean, glossy, distinctive Gollancz yellow background dw/dj,with red+black lettered front panel, black lettered spine/backstrip and red+black lettered publisher's advert for other assorted authors' published titles to rear panel - all with negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks tears or splits present.Top edges lightly aged/toned with minimal sporadic dust flecking,fore-edges slightly brighter and less affected with very minimal, faint foxing; contents bright, tight, and clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread, other than my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp, clean, red cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for overall brightness and cleanliness and lack of detracting faults. He began with books about an amateur detective before deciding to concentrate on the investigations of a professional policeman - Wycliffe - who had made his bow in 'Three-Toed Pussy' (1968) moved on to centre stage in 'To Kill a Cat' (1970). The recent TV showings of six of Chief Superintendent Wycliffe's most baffling cases attracted audiences of more than ten million a week, and created a huge new audience hungry for more. Now Wycliffe returns with another intriguing mystery. The Kemps,a Cornish Catholic family, have hung onto Kellycoryk, their ancestral home, for almost five hundred years, but it is beginning to look as though the present century will be their last.Roger, head of the shrinking clan,is desperate to stave off the inevitable. His second marriage, this time to Bridget,a prosperous business-woman with her own ideas for the radical development of the estate, offers a possible way out.But it will be painful. Then Bridget disappears, and inevitably the local tongues start to wag.Didn't Julia,Roger's first wife (herself moderately well-heeled), disappear overboard during a sailing trip? What is Roger up to? Wycliffe is supposed to be spending a week in a nearby cottage, recuperating from illness in the company of his wife, but there is too much that is intriguing about the Kemps for him to ignore. W.J. Burley navigates Wycliffe through a tale with as many twists and turns as a Cornish lane to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. His many fans, old and new, will be delighted. This volume marks the first attempt to chronicle the entire 50-year saga (upto and then 2012) of Bond music making with all of its ups and downs, surprises and disappointments, disasters and triumphs. In addition to the film-by-film history of Bond songs and scores, every chapter looks in detail at the music within a film to help fans pinpoint specific themes and musical highlights, enabling them to match up the music from the film with their favourite tracks on the soundtrack albums (an important commercial by-product of the film scores, also examined in detail). James Bond songs and scores - like diamonds - are forever, and this book celebrates that remarkable legacy. In 'The Music of James Bond',Jon Burlingame throws open studio and courtroom doors alike to reveal the full and extraordinary history of the sounds of James Bond, spicing the story with a wealth of fascinating and previously undisclosed tales, including: How the James Bond Theme was written at the last minute for Dr. No and how it became the subject of controversy, ending in a libel trial 40 years later in London's High Court; How Bond composer John Barry invented a new kind of action-adventure music for movies, and how despite writing immensely popular scores for Goldfinger , Thunderball , You Only Live Twice and eight other Bond films,he never received a single Academy Award nomination for his Bond music; How the Goldfinger soundtrack battled the Beatles and Mary Poppins to the top of the American charts and bested both in 1965; How Thunderball went through two songs, three singers, and its own courtroom showdown, before it ended up with a title tune; How top artists like Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Sheena Easton, Duran Duran, a-ha, the Pretenders, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow and Madonna were convinced to record for Agent 007; How changes in the Bond sound reflected what was happening in pop and rock circles, from the twangy guitar of the Sean Connery era to a more sedate sound for Roger Moore, synthesizers for George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton, and a more contemporary approach for Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig; How Frank Sinatra planned to sing Moonraker but didn't, then Johnny Mathis did (with a different lyric), only to be replaced by Shirley Bassey; The untold stories of how Eric Clapton played guitar on Licence to Kill but saw his work shelved; and how Amy Winehouse very nearly co-wrote and sang the theme for Quantum of Solace. Each chapter contains the full backstory of the music for one Bond film and concludes with a reader-friendly analysis of the score itself, pointing out noteworthy musical sequences from the impact of New Orleans jazz on the Live and Let Die score,to the trendy disco in For Your Eyes Only, to the electronica approach that proved disastrous in GoldenEye.New interviews with many Bond songwriters and composers, coupled with extensive research, fascinating and previously undiscovered details - including tales of temperamental artists, unexpected hits and surprising convergences of great music with unforgettable images - make 'The Music of James Bond' a must reading for 007 buffs, popular music fans, and all who are in music and the movies. He brought her a lace dress and a fur coat.Symbols of everything everybody was apparently rebelling against.Straight life.It was his present to her.To mark their first date.A kind of nylon lace dress suitable for someone double, even treble her age and the rabbit-fur coat. Fred's gift to Rose. On 26 February 1994 the remains of Heather West were discovered in the garden of the house at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester where she had lived with her seven brothers and sisters, her mother Rosemary and her father Fred.Over the next days the remains of eight other women were found buried and 25 Cromwell Street became known as the 'House of Horror'. Fred West hanged himself in prison before the charges against him of child-rape, sexual abuse, torture and murder could be heard. On conviction, his wife became known as the most depraved woman on earth. In 'Happy Like Murderers' Gordon Burn reveals for the first time the strange inner dynamic of the Wests' relationship throughout their long life together. Was Rosemary West a vicious, sadistic and insatiable bisexual, her husband's full partner in the lust murders of women and young girls? Or was she a physically and psychologically tormented obedience slave, shaped by him and her own submissive dependence into something compliant and corrupt? Gordon Burn has been given unprecedented and,in several cases, exclusive acces to the close family of Rosemary West as well as other materials not previously seen which cast new and startling light on her personality and the nature of her relationship with Fred West.Certain to be one of the most talked about books in recent years (then 1998),'Happy Like Murderers' is a compassionate and coruscating response to a case so horrifying that it already has become part of our folk memory. The author's most memorable book, about the serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, with the jacket famously designed by his friend,Damien Hirst.Gruesome and grotesque, but a brilliant study of Fred West and his even more repulsive wife, Rosemary.Between them they raped, tortured and murdered a still unknown number of people. It cannot avoid being a dreadful tale because of its subject, but is also this very fine writer's best book. The dramatisation on British television,as 'Appropriate Adult',with Dominic West and Emily Watson, renewed interest in the case. Gordon Burn examines the contemporary obsession with celebrity in a series of books spanning three decades, including this extraordinary account of Fred and Rosemary West.He also wrote a Whitbread Best First Novel award-winning novel,'Alma Cogan' - which imagined an alternative life for the British singer Alma Cogan. His 2nd novel was titled 'fullalove' - see rja26567 and rja26577 (both SIGNED,1st edns). His editor, commenting after Gordon Burn's early death, hailed Burn's work as "far ahead of the rest of the literary world", and lamented the loss of "one of the great literary innovators of these times. Gordon's subject of choice was often trauma, spectacle and dysfunction. He was drawn to the dark side of celebrity. His literature and impulse always represented to me an attempt to find comfort, meaning and compassion in the most appalling or baffling of events." Mary Booker and Richard Hillary met in December 1941 and immediately fell in love.Mary was one of the most beautiful and gifted women of her generation: she was also twenty years older than Richard, who was recovering from the terrible injuries he had received as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain. He had just written 'The Last Enemy',his memorable account of his life up to,including and after that traumatic experience, when his injuries were tended by the pioneer of plastic surgery,Archibald McIndoe. For a year, until,at 23,Hillary was killed in another crash,Mary and Richard were very close even when they were apart.Over thirty years later,Michael Burn - who married Mary in 1947, after his own release from wartime imprisonment in Germany - found their letters, lovingly preserved, while going through Mary's papers after her death.Burn has woven them into a compelling narrative of devotion, gaiety, depression, exhaustion and ecstasy. As he writes: 'A love affair between a young man and an older woman is a classic relationship . . .' But Mary and Richard were exceptional. Their letters set forth with clarity, wit and poetry the emotional condition of innumerable lovers. To these intensifications of what is usual add the disaster of Richard's death, and a story emerges which does not deserve to stay hidden in the boxroom. The book is written not only as a story, but as a deeply felt personal responsibility. It is a dedicated commemoration of his wife, and a vindication of Hillary,to whose death it provides the true background, hitherto obscured by the fantasies of Arthur Koestler,Middleton Murry and others. It is a luminous document, profoundly moving and brillaintly told. [Richard Hillary was born in Sydney,Australia, in 1919.He came to England after the last war, where his father, who was in the Australian Treasury. In 1931 he went to Shrewsbury, and in 1937 to Trinity College,Oxford. He was at Oxford when the war broke out and, with other members of the Oxford R.A.F.V.R.,was immediately called to duty.He was one of the first pilots to be shot down in the Battle of Britain. Trapped in the blazing cockpit of his machine, he managed to struggle free and baled out, being picked up from the sea by a lifeboat and taken to Margate Hospital suffering from shock and severe burns. Then began a long period of surgical operations and convalescence interrupted by further operations. It was during this period that The Last Enemy was written. As soon as he had recovered sufficiently to use his hands,he did not rest from badgering the authorities until he had been allowed to return to operational flying. He was killed on active service on January 7,1943.Adjudged a literary classic of the Battle of Britain. The title comes from "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death" 1 CORINTHIANS xv.26.] Please contact seller, because of the value of this item, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! So much has been written about the great land campaigns of the Second World War that it is easy to forget,if indeed many people today are even aware of the fact, that the nearest Great Britain came to defeat had nothing whatsoever to do with either the British Army or the Royal Air Force. The country was simply on the verge of running out of supplies. There are certainly advantages in being 'a precious stone set in a silver sea',but an island Kingdom depends on its maritime trade to survive and when merchant ships are being sunk quicker than they can be replaced, the moment of crisis can not be far away. This was indeed the situation for month after month during the second and third years of the war and,had the tide not been turned in the nick of time, the country would have been reduced to starvation and the Army and Air Force would have withered on the branch.Indeed Winston Churchill himself was later to write: 'The only thing that really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.' The task of seeing that the merchant ships which carried the vital supplies reached their destinations fell largely on the shoulders of the Convoy Commanders, who were mostly senior but retired Naval officers who had volunteered to return to duty and it is their story which Alan Burn, who sailed on many such convoys, tells in this book.It is a remarkable story and a worthy but long overdue tribute to those very brave men who had in peacetime enjoyed all the privileges of their exalted rank and now,all too often, found themselves cooped up in some 'dirty British coaster.' But for them it is indeed questionable whether we could have survived. There are drawings that show Dorset's towns when most were no larger than villages, others that evoke the bustle of trade and the prosperity of its ports. As well as the places there are the people: the smugglers and coster-girls,fishermen and farmers,George III taking his first bathe at Weymouth,John Love, bookseller and fattest man in England, the rumbustious Henry Hastings, who spent his days coursing and hunting,'but what he borrowed to caress his neighbours wives' - as well as the other men and women who shaped Dorset's character and way of life during three remarkable centuries. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's book.It is only the minimal, minor exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. For the first seven years of his life,Cedric Errol lives with his mother,an impoverished widow,in New York City.A popular boy,his best friends include Mr Hobbs, who keeps a grocery store, and Dick,a boot-black.This simple life changes dramatically when a mysterious visitors reveals that Cedric Errol is Lord Fauntleroy, the sole surviving heir of the Earl of Dorincourt. Summoned across the Atlantic by the bad-tempered,gouty Earl and focibly separated from his beloved mother,Cedric has nothing to sustain him in this strange new world of untold riches but his good nature and loving, generous heart. Contrary to the popular image of him as a simpering child tied to his mother's apron strings,Cedric is a robust character: strong, determined and a staunch defender of human rights. Frances Hodgson Burnett's story is a masterpiece of children's fiction, and Graham Rust's illustrations perfectly conjure up the gloomy atmosphere of the English castle and its subsequent transformation by the lively American boy. Graham Rust, born 1942,went to Art School for four years in London and New York.He has painted and travelled extensively, spending a year as Artist in Residence at Woodberry Forest School, Virginia in 1967.His work has been exhibited in London,New York and Hong Kong, and examples of his murals are to be found in houses in Britain, the USA and France. The largest and most spectacular of these,'The Temptation' at Ragley Hall, Warwickshire, was completed in 1983 after more than a decade's work.He has also illustrated other of Burnett's titles: 'The Secret Garden' - see by book ID rja798918 for a UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus, for an example, and 'A Little Princess.' In her autobiography Frances Hodgson Burnett recalled her early memories of gardens - in particular, one which 'lay behind a little green door in a high wall. . . the little door so long unopened . . once there had been flowers and trees in this.' Years later this became the inspiration for 'The Secret Garden',a book which has now charmed readers for several generations. After losing her parents in a cholera epidemic in India,Mary Lennox,an unloved, unattractive and awkward little girl,is packed off to Misselthwaite Manor on the bleak Yorkshire moors. Here she encounters her invalid cousin, Colin,a spoiled and arrogant child who meets his match in Mary. Together they are drawn into the magical world of animals and nature around them and gradually - like the hidden garden they discover and nurture - they are both transformed by the beauty and mystery they find there. The characters, the story and the writing are as fresh today as they were when the book was originally published in 1911,and Graham Rust's original illustrations, full of fine period detail, bring to life the whole cast of characters and,of course, the secret garden itself - 'the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place anyone could imagine'. At last, after sixteen years, the author of 'The Incredible Journey' has written another animal story of classic quality which will bring a new generation of readers to discover the special Sheila Burnford magic. The Bel Ria of the title is a tough little terrier; a member of a tiny Basque travelling circus troupe which was shot to pieces by a German Stuka in the confusion of the retreat from France, the dog survives the sinking of the troopship Lancastria together with his fellow performer,a capuchin monkey called Louis.Ria becomes the charge of Neil MacLean,a complex Scottish sick berth attendant.Man and dog wage their own battle of personalities against the rigorous background of the U-boat-infested North Atlantic convoy run. Later,Ria ashore at Plymouth, endures alone the hell of the Blitz. From then on a new phase begins in the dog's life.He is named Bel by the strange and until now unloved old lady who he finds in the rubble of the Blitz. Three fractured human lives are changed by their involvement with this dog and the story culminates,as readers of 'The Incredible Journey' will not need to be told,in scenes of emotion and drama. But it is the indomitable, sensitive and latterly bewildered spirit of the dog himself which will linger longest in the reader's mind and imagination.Sheila Burnford combines all her talents as a story teller - brilliantly evoking the worst days of the last war - with her deep understanding of the mind of a dog. The 2nd title of the four L'Amour 'Hopalong' titles, highly sought after by his collectors. [The role played by the circulating libraries in the history of library provision is unique to Britain.Circulating libraries bridged the gap from the period when books were almost the exclusive province of the rich to the present situation of a national free public library service. One of two of the biggest circulating libraries in Britain,W. H. Smith and Son (1860-1961) began with book stalls in railroad stations, and they used trains to effectively expand their distribution of books.circulating libraries survived well into the 20th century.] Tex Burns was the pseudonym of Louis Dearborn L'Amour (March 22, 1908 – June 10,1988) an American novelist and short-story writer. His books consisted primarily of Western novels, but he also wrote historical, science fiction, and non-fiction,as well as poetry and short-story collections. Many of his stories were made into films. Originally published under the pseudonym Tex Burns,Louis L'Amour was commissioned to write four Hopalong Cassidy books in the spring and summer of 1950,'H C and the Rustlers of West Fork','H C and the Riders of High Rock','H C and the Trail to Seven Pines' and H C, Trouble-Shooter'. L'Amour's contact with Leo Margulies, led to L'Amour agreeing to write many stories for the Western pulp magazines published by Standard Magazines,a substantial portion of which appeared under the his pseudonym 'Jim Mayo'.The suggestion of L'Amour writing these Hopalong Cassidy novels also was made by Margulies who planned on launching Hopalong Cassidy's Western Magazine at a time when the William Boyd films and new television series were becoming popular with a new generation. L'Amour read the original Hopalong Cassidy novels, written by Clarence E. Mulford, and wrote his novels based on the original character under the name "Tex Burns".Only two issues of the Hopalong Cassidy's Western Magazine were published, and the novels as written by L'Amour were extensively edited to meet Doubleday's thoughts of how the character should be portrayed in print.Strongly disagreeing - L'Amour preferred Mulford's original, much rougher characterization of Cassidy and for the rest of his life,he denied authoring the novels. UK,12mo p/back,1st thus,5-192pp [paginated] includes 10 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable and even internally,is also in a smilar condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 65+ year-old ageand nature, i.e. an ephemeral paperback. It is only the minor and minimal faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite them,it really is still an exemplary example for its appearance and contents, and also its lack of other detracting faults. Hopalong Cassidy,"a living legend in his own time","a man who lived close to ripping horns, charging hoofs, the thunder of the stampede, the roar of guns - and it showed",set out to help Cindy Blair get the ranch that Melford has left her.It might well be that "the most famous cattleman of them all" had been called in too late; but it was worth a try. Clarence E. Mulford the originator of the fictional character Hopalong Cassidy, over the course of his career (roughly 1906-1941) wrote more than two dozen novels, the majority of which were about Hopalong Cassidy and the other characters from the Bar 20 ranch. In 1941 he published the last of his Cassidy novels, 'Hopalong Cassidy serves a Writ',and retired on the money made by his extraordinarily popular books and the sale of their film rights. In the spring and summer of 1950,Louis L'Amour wrote four stories about Hopalong Cassidy. He used the pen name Tex Burns and the books were commissioned by Doubleday's Double D Western imprint. 'The Rustlers of West Fork', 'Trail to Seven Pines', 'Riders of High Rock', and 'Trouble Shooter' were the first four novels that he had ever published. Want other Western fiction, titles? From its early beginnings, when the first football on the shores of Bilbao and Buenos Aires was played by British sailors and engineers, through to the influx of South American stars, and similarly inspirational Italians,Dutchman and Scandinavians, this lively and thoughtful history shows how the engagement of foreigners with home-grown Spanish talent overcame political adversity and produced football of sublime skill, passion, and unparalleled entertainment value. The book takes us on a journey through some of the extraordinary characters, games, and moments that have defined Spanish football; from the early days when a few enthusiasts developed their talent kicking a ball around on a piece of industrial waste-ground or beach,to the emergence of rival giants,FC Barcelona and Real Madrid - the most powerful and successful football clubs in the world - and a national team that, encompassing all that was most brilliant in the Spanish League, became the World Champions. The author of a best-selling biography of Diego Maradona, and similarly widely acclaimed books on FC Barcelona and Real Madrid,Jimmy Burns digs deep into the roots of the most popular sport,to look at how football played in Spain became the most admired in the world. Burns's books on Spanish and South American footbal have earned him a reputation internationally as a master of the genre, mixing acute observation, telling anecdote, and colourful profiles and interviews with players, managers and fans in an absorbing historical and social context. A highly collected and sought after children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item in Burroughes' bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon. As such, fairly uncommon. Dorothy Mary L. Burroughes (b.1883,d. 1963) Worked as Dorothy Burroughes, nickname Budge, which she used in her book dedications.Born in Westminster,London. Her father,James Burroughes, was the proprietor of Burroughes & Watts, Britain’s leading manufacturer of billiard tables and snooker accessories. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art,at Heatherley's School of Fine Art [The school was named after Thomas Heatherley who took over as the school's principal from James Mathews Leigh (when it was named "Leigh's").Founded in 1845,the school is affectionately known as Heatherley's.It is one of the oldest independent art schools in London and is among the few art colleges in Britain today, that focuses on portraiture, figurative painting and sculpture.] and in Germany too. Worked as a commercial artist,a painter and poster and lino-cut artist as well as a highly regarded author/illustrator of 20+ children's books, some of which she either authored and illustrated herself or illustrated for other authors. As a commercial artist, she had a commission from London Underground for a poster that promoted trips to the Zoo at Regents Park. That design design featured a group of Langur monkeys, drawn in a Japanese-woodcut inspired style which was to become synonymous with Burroughes’ later animal studies.A second commission followed in 1922,also for the Zoo. That design, known as ‘the monkey poster’,was even more popular than her first, and it became London Underground’s most requested poster. A solo exhibition, her first,in South Kensington in 1923 also met with acclaim and praise. Examples of her paintings from that exhibition began to appear in contemporary magazines such as 'The Sketch and the 'Illustrated London News'. Despite her success and her acclaim for the animal life drawings, she felt it was heartbreaking and too painful.Nevertheless, her skill at capturing the character and dignity of animal subjects was widely admired and in 1925 she was made a Fellow of the Zoological Society in recognition of her talent.Elected RBA (1925). Her first book was 'Amazing Adventures of Little Brown Bear (1930).
