CAMERON**, IAN:
ANTARCTICA - The Last Continent.

Imprint: LONDON.CASSELL,1974.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn,price-clipped to dw/dj.8vo,256pp includes journeys of expeditions to Antarctica,a biblio,an index,b/w+colour illus and maps interspersed throughout the text and the book. Antarctica - five and a half million square miles of windswept ice - is the most desolate, yet in some ways the most beautiful area on earth. Its exploration has been a unique challenge; a contest between nature at her most awe-inspiring and man at his most inquisitive. The Ancients concept of Antarctica was of a Great Southern Continent filled with 'Brazil Wood,Elephants and Gold', but the voyages of the sealers into the tempestuous waters south of Cape Horn, and early explorations culminating in Cook's brilliant achievements, brought about man's first groping contact with the new continent and finally disproves the theories of a fabulous, populated landmass. The first sighting of the mainland is attributed to the little-known Russian, Thaddeus von Bellinghausen, whose landfall, due to the time lag of the Julian Calendar,is proved conclusively to have predated those of his British and American contemporaries. The accolade of the first landing,is awarded to the New England sealer John Davis, whose ship's log has only recently been discovered. The tragic depredations of the whalers, the race for the South Pole and the tragedy of Scott's last journey, the first crossing of the continent by the British Antarctic Expedition and the establishment of scientific observatories are among the further highlights of this story of man's presence on Antarctica. The illustrations complements and enhance the text. They include rare prints from the Soviet Union, original and unpublished paintings recently discovered in a British museum, and photographs by some of the world's leading photographers. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a 10-year-old book.It really is an exceptional, exemplary copy for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of faults.                                          Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was the most successful polar explorer of his era using sledges, dogs, ski and ships. He is mainly remembered for being the first man to reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911.What is less often remembered is that he was also the first man to reach the North Pole on 12 May 1926 as the leader of the Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile expedition in the airship Norge. His involvement in aviation from his experiments with man-lifting kites in 1909 to his death in 1928 while flying from Norway to Spitsbergen has not been the subject of a detailed study until now. This book explores Amundsen's enthusiasm for flight from the moment he read about Bleriot's flight across the English Channel in an aeroplane on 25 July 1909. From that moment onwards he was alert to the potential of aircraft as vehicles to explore the portions of the globe which remained unexplored in the first quarter of the 20th century. The man-lifting kites built by Einar Sem-Jacobsen took the life of his second in command Ole Engelstad and were carried, but not used, during his 1910-1912 expedition to the South Pole.He saw aeroplanes flying in America and Germany in 1913 and in 1914 he was taught to fly by Sem-Jacobsen.He passed his flight test on a Farman Longhorn biplane on 1 June 1914 and in mid-1915 was issued with the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (Norge) aeroplane pilot's certificate number one.He bought a Farman biplane to take with him on an expedition to the North Polar Sea but the outbreak of the Great War stopped the Expedition and Amundsen gave his Farman to the Norwegian government. After the war he acquired a Curtiss Oriole biplane and two Junkers F13's then in 1925 he embarked on a flight, which he barely survived,to the North Pole in two Dornier Wal flying boats. 1926 brought long delayed success when the Norge flew to the Pole and on to Alaska. On 18 June 1928 he and five companions took off from Tromso on a search and rescue flight for the missing airship Italia and were never seen again. The only traces of the men and their aircraft were a tip float and an empty fuel tank which washed up on the coast of Northern Norway several months later. Searches of the sea-bed near Bear Island for the remains of the Latham 47 flying boat he was flying in took place in 2004 and 2009 and interest in the mystery of his disappearance remains high. LOST PARADISE - The Exploration of the Pacific.

Imprint: LONDON.CENTURY,1987.
Edition: UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.Owner inscrptn to fep inked out,dw/dj price-clipped.Minimal creasing dw/dj edges.UK, Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,248pp includes b/w+ colour illus, maps, appendix,a biblio and an index. The European seamen who explored the Pacific made some of the longest and most hazardous voyages in history. They had to endure squalor, brutality, hunger, thirst and an appalling death rate. However, when they reached the islands of the central Pacific they were made welcome by a people who,in innocence, offered them food, drink, shelter and sex,and asked for nothing in return. 'What a country!' wrote the French explorer de Bougainville, 'What a people! I thought I had been transported to Paradise.' Yet within a century of de Bougainville's landing, the people of the Pacific islands had been decimated by deprivation, disease and the total collapse of their culture - left with nothing to look forward to but 'going into the night to join the spirits of their ancestors'.Paradise had been found. And lost. CAMERON's book describes the physical creation of the Pacific, and suggests how the ocean's multitude of islands may have first been populated by those true discoverers of the ocean, the Polynesians. It brings vividly to life the epic voyages of the Spanish,Dutch,British,French, Russian and American explorers as they battled against the vast distances of the Pacific and the appalling weather conditions of the ocean's polar approaches. It recounts the excesses of the exploiters - the freebooters, sealers, whalers, missionaries and traders - who followed in the explorers wake.Using contemporary diaries, material and illustrations from the archives of the Royal Geographic Society,CAMERON chronicles both the triumph of the Pacific voyages and the tragedy of their aftermath. Plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a dedication with co-author's (non-band members) acknowledgements to it's reverse. Sprung from a family background steeped in a rich mixture of radical politics and traditional folk music, brothers Robin and Ali Campbell and their childhood friends went on to create one of the most unlikely yet enduring groups in pop history: UB40. Theirs is a career that has spanned four decades and resulted in sales of more than 50 million records with 50 hit singles to their credit.A rich cast of characters - from music business wheeler-dealers and backroom players to Nelson Mandela,Chrissie Hynde, the late Robert Palmer (then 2005),Sting and all the great 'fathers' of reggae - make appearances in 'Blood & Fire',but this is not just a musical story. 'Blood & Fire' is the startling and,by turns, comic and tragic autobiography of two working-class brothers fighting against the odds and overcoming police busts,MI5 surveillance, divorce, drink, drugs, mismanagement and addiction. At times the rollercoaster has tested even their own relationship to the very limit, but the brotherly bond has seen them through. When UB40 formed Robin was an ex-British Leyland factory fitter hustling in snooker halls while Ali was long-term unemployed and had recently suffered a brutal attack in a bar brawl in which he nearly lost an eye. When he received £4,000 in criminal compensation for the attack he ploughed it into buying musical instruments for himself and his mates. The rest is history as the brothers and their gang showed the world that the throb of inner city Balsall Heath had, and still has, global appeal. What did the nation's dogs do for the war effort? How did man's best friend prove his loyalty in his master's struggle against the Axis threat? In 'Bonzo's War' (author's previously published other work) Clare Campbell told the fascinating story of what it was like for Britain's pets when the world was at war. This time, she follows the incredible journey of the dogs who were conscripted to fight for their country, with some even returning with medals for their bravery. During the most dangerous days of WW2,the British government set out to recruit an army of canines to go into battle. This experimental team of brave hounds would later use their incredible sense of smell to sniff out the anti-personnel mines that barred the way to reclaiming Europe. Dog owners countrywide shed tears as they bid farewell to their beloved 'Brian', 'Rex',or 'Molly' and packed them off to the War Dogs Training School to learn the skills they'd need to 'do their bit for Britain',from the Tunisian mountains to the frontiers of the Third Reich. The soldiers waiting out in the field to greet their canine counterparts were under strict instructions: do not get too attached to your new four-legged companion. That bit proved disastrously impossible. Based on original documents,first-hand accounts and interviews,'Dogs of Courage' tells a story of human determination, heartbreak annd uncompromising canine courage that has never been told before. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! When Margaret Thatcher unexpectedly emerged to challenge Edward Heath for the Conservative leadership in 1975,the public knew her only as an archetypal Home Counties Tory lady, more famous for her hats than for any outstanding talent: she had a rich businessman husband, sent her children to the most expensive private schools, owned houses in Kent and Chelsea and sat in Parliament for Finchley. As Education Secretary she had made the headlines by cutting the provision of free school milk; but she had voiced no criticism of the policies which led to Heath's defeat. No one for a moment imagined that she would be Heath's successor, far less go on to become one of the most dominant Prime Ministers of the century. Yet almost overnight she reinvented herself.Journalists who set out to discover where she came from were amazed to find that she had grown up above a grocer's shop in Grantham. Within weeks of her becoming Tory leader an entirely new image was in place, based around the now famous corner shop beside the Great North Road; the strict Methodist upbringing; and her father, the stern but saintly Alderman Roberts, who taught her the 'Victorian values' - thrift, temperance,self-reliance,patriotism and duty - which were the foundations of her subsequent career. It is all true,so far as it goes; yet it is not the whole truth. In this first volume of the first full-scale biography of Margaret Thatcher since her fall from power - and the first thoroughly to explore her early life - John Campbell, the prize-winning biographer of Edward Heath, re-examines the mythology and suggests a more complex reality behind the idealised picture accepted by Lady Thatcher's early biographers.Following her escape from Grantham to wartime Oxford, through her brief experience as a research chemist in Essex and her first political campaigns as a young Tory candidate in the safe Labour seat of Dartford in 1950 and 1951,to her marriage to Denis Thatcher, her struggles as a young mother in the 1950's to win a seat in Parliament and her first steps as a junior minister in the early 1960's,he portrays an ambitious and determined woman ruthlessly distancing herself from her roots - until the moment in 1975 when they suddenly became a political asset. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too! The Street & Smiths' issues began as 'Astounding Stories',and changed to 'Astounding Science- Fiction' in March 1938.The hyphen disappeared in November 1946,and the title then remained unchanged until 1960,when the 'Analog Science Fact & Fiction' was phased in between February and October. In April 1965 this was reversed to 'Analog Science Fiction & Fact' and it has remained unchanged since then, though it has undergone several stylistic and orthographic variations. Publishers Street & Smith was acquired by Samuel Newhouse, the owner of Condé Nast,in August 1959,and merged into Condé Nast at the end of 1961.Campbell finally achieved his goal of getting rid of the word 'Astounding' in the magazine's title, changing it to 'Analog Science Fact/Science Fiction'. The British edition by this publisher, ran from August 1939 until August 1963,initially in pulp format, switching to digest from November,1953. The pulp issues began at 96pp,then dropped to 80pp with the March,1940 issue, and to 64pp in December that year. All the digest issues were 128 pages long. The price was 9d until October, 1953; thereafter it was 1/6d until February 1961,and 2/6d until the end of the run.The material in the British editions was selected from the U.S. issues, most stories coming from a single U.S. number, and other stories picked from earlier or later issues to fill the magazine. The covers were usually repainted from the American originals.
