An illustrated record of all the locomotives acquired from the four constituent groups on Nationalization, and of all those built subsequently for BR up to March 1960,when construction of new steam engines ceased.Every class of locomotive is represented in the 350 pages of illustrations/photographs,and information is given on the history and origin of all classes,those being laid out in order of British Railways' numbering, except where a different layout makes comparisons easier.For the preservationist mention is also made of those main-line engines which have been saved from the scrap-heap.This is a book which conveys much of the variety and individuality of our railway system before the coming of standardisation, and it will be an important work for all those who count themselves railway enthusiasts.
