'Until he ate a bluebottle,William Buckland had always maintained that the taste of mole was the most repulsive he knew.' So opens the portrait of William Buckland, the founder of geology and one of the most peculiar eccentrics featured in this remarkable and dazzingly funny book. One hundred and four of the greatest British eccentrics are featured, and a greater galaxy of stars is difficult to imagine - Romeo Coates, the diamond-clad actor, who rewrote Shakespeare; John Christie, the founder of Glyndebourne, who for a time provided all female guests with knitting needles and wool; Simeon Ellerton, who preferred walking with a large stone on his head; and,of course, the sublime poet,William McGonagall. Perhaps most astonishing is Joshua Norton, born in 1819,who reigned as Emperor of the United States of America for over twenty years. His Imperial Palace was only a small room in a seedy lodging house, but like all great eccentrics his ambitions were not constrained by the realities of everyday life.

Nursery rhymes are a familiar, and yet mysterious, part of childhood. They are often a child's first encounter with the magic of words and rhythms,a first taste of poetry, the first things 'known by heart'.But where do nursery rhymes come from? They are a fascinating mix of ancient and modern verse which combine to form a heritage linking generations of parents and children. 'Early in the Morning' is Charles Causley's marvellous contribution to this treasury of nursery rhymes.Charles Causley is a highly distinguished poet and his forty new poems and rhymes perfectly blend the sound of traditional verse with his own intense originality.'Round the Corner comes Jack Fall','Good Morning,Mr Croc-o-doc-dile','Spin Me a Web,Spider',Charles Causley's poems are full of the mysterious nonsense and haunting resonances which make nursery rhymes lodge in the back of the memory of everyone. Twenty of the poems have been set to music by the composer,Anthony Castro. His songs capture the spirit of the poems, being both entertaining and very singable. They appear with full piano accompaniment and guitar chords. The book is beautifully illustrated,in full colour and in black and white,by the award-winning artist, Michael Foreman. Charles S[tanley] Causley,CBE,FRSL (b. 24 August 1917,d. 4 November 2003) was a Cornish poet, schoolmaster and writer.Noted particularly for his works' simplicity, directness and for its associations with folklore, especially when linked to his native Cornwall.Born and died in Launceston,Cornwall. After service in the Royal Navy,he was for twenty-five years a schoolteacher before becoming a full time writer. In 1967 he was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry, and he is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. The University of Exeter,Devon, conferred on him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters in 1977.Among the many volumes of his own verse is 'Figgie Hobbin',one of the most popular collections of poems for children to have been produced in the last decade (then 1986).His anthologies of poems,'The Puffin Book of Magic Verse','The Puffin Book of Salt-Sea Verse' and 'The Sun, Dancing' have been highly acclaimed. In the New Year Honours list for this year (1986),he was appointed CBE(Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to poetry. Michael Foreman is one of the most famous and versatile illustrators of modern children's books. He studied at the Royal College of Art and has written and illustrated fourteen books for children and illustrated more than forty others (then 1986).He has won many awards, including the Graphic Prize at Bologna, the Kurt Maschler Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal for 1982 and also for a 2nd time,in 1989 for 'War Boy',and the Children's Book Award in 1984. Exhibitions of his work have been held in Europe, the USA and Japan. He lives in London and Cornwall. 'It sounds as though your time in the Navy was a bit of a skylark,' a friend said to Charles Causley on the original publication in 1951 of his Naval stories, 'Hands to Dance'.Noel Coward describes this new and revised edn as 'most brilliantly constructed and most lovingly and wittily written'.Charles Causley has added a foreword and a long autobiographical section dealing with some of the realities of his life during a varied period of wartime service on the lower deck. Written with zest and an infectious enthusiasm, these entertaining tales, many of which have been broadcast by the BBC and are classics of their kind, range from the deceptively peaceful market towns of the West of England to the life of the matelot in Gibraltar,West Africa, the islands of the Mediterranean,Alexandria and Australia.By contrast, his own personal memoir offers an often moving account of his emergence as a writer and as one of the most distinguished poets of our time. In the old Navy, the pipe 'Hands to Dance and Skylark' was sounded when a ship's company, after a long period at sea,was in need of cheerful excercise to raise the spirits. It seems an appropriate title for this always engaging and lively collection of stories. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact seller for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

Imprint: LONDON.WEIDENFELD & NICOLSON LTD.,1994.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+ fore-edges bright and clean, contents bright, tight and near pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - but an accidental(?) vertical, diagonal crease lightly affecting ffe,half-title+ title pages - probably the only fault. Clean, publisher's original, plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt letters to spine/backstrip, with clean, plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,vii (prologue)+1-210pp [paginated] includes 12 chapters,an appendix; plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages,a dedication and 6pp blanks to rear. The year is 1943 and drawing to its close. Winter is descending on a small,run-down farm.Confronted by a sudden family catastrophe,a twelve-year-old country boy fights bravely to keep his animals alive while predatory neighbours wait to pick off the prize - Manor Farm. Their names may seem familiar - Pilkington,Frederick and 'Knacker' Simmonds. And then there is the young country boy,Alex Jones. His surname is common enough, and yet it too is drawn from the same source - a famous novel. The stranger, who calls himself Eric Blair, brings with him tall stories, tins of precious food,a love of the countryside, peculiar prejudices and a knowledge of the wider world unimagined by Alex and his school friends. Now fatherless himself, the wild boy Alex becomes enthralled by this 'Eric',who confesses that he's a writer, but gives little away the true purpose of his visits. The reader will uncover the truth long before Alex. This is the story of how George Orwell came to write his classic Animal Farm, first published almost fifty years ago.But is the story true or not? Is this a chapter of hitherto unrevealed biography or a complete fiction? Whatever the verdict, the reader will be absorbed by David Caute's vivid portrait of the man who was both 'Dr Orwell' and 'Mr Blair'. At the age of twenty one Prince Philip wrote to a relative: 'I know you will never think much of me.I am rude.' The Duke of Edinburgh may well not have altered this view of himself in his long later life. This affectionate self-portrait brings together the best,as well as a host of less well-known stories about the prince and gives a fascinating first-hand insight into the royal world where he 'traipses around' as a 'fella who belongs to Mrs Queen'. From Prince Philip's blunt speech-making, his mocking of the media and captains of industry,to his fond teasing of Her Majesty herself, here is a truly regal self-portrait by the royal family's 'very own Jeremy Clarkson'. Did you know that a child can be cured of the whooping cough by passing it under the belly of a donkey? Or that weak eyes can be cured by the application of chicken dung - or alternatively by large draughts of beer taken in the morning? The history of medicine in Britain is filled with the most bizarre and gruesome cures for many common ailments. Many of them - though enthusiastically supported by the doctors of the time - were often useless, and sometimes lethal! Of the hundreds of cures promoted for warding off the dreaded plague, none were effective.Strange and alarming though many of the cures may seem, some of them did in fact work - and provide the basis of much of the medicine we take for granted nowadays. The use of herbs by medieval monks was remarkably effective - and still is today. Nigel Cawthorne - author of 'The Strange Laws of Old England' - has once again trawled through the eccentric byways of our history to produce this highly entertaining and informative book.It will fascinate anyone who has ever wondered whether doctors really know what they are talking about. . . . Author is the younger son of the fourth Marquess of Salisbury. As a writer,he is well known as the author of 'The Stricken Deer - a biography of the poet Cowper which won the Hawthornden Prize in 1929; more recently (then 1941) his well-known biography 'Young Melbourne'. In the present book on the English poets, he covers the whole field of English poetry from Chaucer to the present day (again 1941).Despite the difficulty of dealing with so great a subject in so short a book he has succeeded in bringing out the individuality of each poet, and in showing the man against the background of his age. In contrast to the majority of his generation his bias has always been towards the temperate excellence of the 18thC,but this does not prevent him from having a lively appreciation of the qualities of those poets of every age who have made English poetry the greatest in the world. 'Past anchored frigates, lean and deadly as lurchers; betwixt two lines of mixed sixty-fours and seventy-fours.Somewhere among them must lie his own Daisy. He scanned their sterns for the magic name but saw it not.Beyond the buoys were a line of piles close inshore, such as were used for colliers, herring boats, harbour craft and the like.At the end of a line of such humble vessels, close by Haslar pier, was a small,full-rigged ship with a string of - he made a swift count - nine gun ports along her side. And a grimy white ensign drooped forlornly from her mizzen peak.Oakshott knew upon the instant, and with a sudden lowering of the spirits and sinking of the heart, that he was gazing upon his new command.' So begins Commander Lord Charles Oakshott's new promotion, and as he sallies forth to war he knows that he faces not one enemy but three. The first is France, newly at war with England in the aftermath of the Revolution. The second is his ship, grimy,down-at-heel and riddled with death watch beetle. And the third is his crew, mutinous and very low on morale. The ship's log, with its record of flogging, courts martial and hanging, tells its own dismal tale. But Oakshott is a man born to command, whose seamanship has been learned in a hard school. He does not intend to be daunted. Not even when he learns that he has to carry two unwanted passengers to Toulon, and then that their mysterious and extremely precious baggage has led him into an enemy trap.A stirring novel of sea adventure set at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars, and introducing a new hero - Commander Lord Charles Oakshott of the Royal Navy. Author's second novel, but the first novel in the Oakshott series, and planning to write the next in the series (then 1984) but died, writing the third.A nice copy of a scarce title. One of Celtic's greatest ever strikers,Stevie Chalmers epitomised the exciting attacking football with which Celtic took Europe by storm during the 1960s.It was Stevie who scored the golden goal in the 1967 European Cup final that clinched the great trophy for Celtic and that saw him and his team-mates immortalised as the 'Lisbon Lions'.Stevie was the Glasgow club's leading scorer in that amazing 1966-67 season, when they became the first British club to reign as champions of Europe and in which they scooped up every trophy at home.He was also the club's most prolific striker during the 1960's, becoming leading goalscorer for Celtic four times during that decade. It was appropriate, then, that it should be Stevie Chalmers who should nip in ahead of everyone five minutes from time in Lisbon to finish off, with finesse, the challenge of Internazionale of Milan, the richest and most successful club in the world. It was the most magical moment in Celtic's history and Stevie describes here,in fascinating detail, just how he came to be in the right place at the right time to write himself into history. Here for the first time Stevie relates key inside details of Celtic's path to glory, his own enormous personal battle to overcome a near-fatal illness to become a footballer and his sometimes uneasy relationship with Jock Stein, the Celtic manager. It all underlines the momentousness of his being there to accomplish that match-winning feat on Celtic's greatest-ever day. See also my book ID rja610216 for a related history of that winning team. The most complete pictorial history of the tank yet published (then 1972 or 79).Over 1,000 b/w photographs, plus data and development notes describe all the tanks produced for military service - including many rarely-seen experimental models and prototypes - from 1916, when the first 'land ships' ventured across the stalemate trenchscape of WW1,to 1945,at the close of a war dominated by the fast blitzkreig thrusts of massed tank divisions. Each major arms-producing country is represented - USA(244 photographs), Britain(283), Germany(103), Russia(106), France(71), Italy(46), Japan(44), Hungary (9), Poland(16), Czechoslovakia(26), Sweden(14), Canada(7), Australia(9), New Zealand(3) - and there is also a section devoted to the smaller countries which used or modified tanks from abroad (52 photographs). Each national section begins with a short survey of tank development in that country, providing the reader with the basic background information to place the comprehensive catalogue which follows firmly in perspective. The tanks themselves are described and illustrated in chronological order, so that the technological development of the tank per country can be traced as the pages are turned. Each vehicle is illustrated together with a comparative data tabulation and brief notes on design, production and performance. The remarkably large number of photographs in this volume - many of which are reproduced for the first time - provides a unique pictorial coverage of the history of tanks.A valuable reference tool,'Pictorial History of Tanks of the World' is an illustrated encyclopaedia without equal, and will be an essential part of any library, public or private, used for the study of 20thC warfare. Bethlem Hospital is the oldest mental institution in the world, but to many it is famous only as 'Bedlam',a chaotic madhouse which brutalised it's patients.Although for much of Bedlam's history such abuse was rare, during the dynastic control of the Monro family - between 1728 and 1855 - a brutal medical programme was implemented, giving Bedlam an unsavoury reputation as one of Europe's most notorious psychiatric hospitals. Using new and detailed research, historian Dr. Paul Chambers brings together a coherent overview of the hospital's 800-year history - from Bethlem's well-intended beginnings in Bishopsgate to its final disgrace and reform in Southwark.Focusing on the 'Munro era' - and structured around a fascinating account of the Monro dynasty - Chambers eplores key elements of the hospital's history. Revealed are fascinating details of its ambivalent relationship with London and Londoners, the life and times of the hospital's more infamous patients: political dissenters, religious maniacs, murderers and female transvestites and finally the rise of a powerful reform movement which forced the government to take the issue of Bedlam seriously. Sensitively wrtten,'Bedlam' is a compelling exploration of an institution that continues to fascinate today, and the author's new research ensures this story of Bedlam is original and builds upon the complex history of the hospital with fresh and intriguing material. His balanced approach sets the gore, depravity and madness against a touching, compelling and sometimes comic story, which raises crucial questions about our own attitudes towards mental health. Chandler's debut classic,hard-boiled detective novel, introducing the iconic detective character Philip Marlowe.Of all those considered as the archetypal hard- boiled detective figures, Marlowe possesses a sensitivity underneath his tough exterior that notably distinguishes him from similar detective characters in the genre. George Whitley,1963), comprise a kind of trailer for the more numerous stories grouped about the figure of Grimes.Grimes is mentioned in this short series, and his own series massively expands the detail of its description of a very similar career and life; he dominates two main sequences. The first sequence chronologically (though most of it was written later) traces his career in the Federation Survey Service up to the point that he shifts his loyalties to the Rim.The second sequence, begun earlier was not written with any internal order in mind; carrying Grimes into his second career with the Rim Runners and the Rim Worlds Naval Reserve and it includes 'INTO THE ALTERNATE UNIVERSE (1964). Chandler's hard-boiled detective Philip Marlowe in a shocking, thrilling murder mystery. It started with some business about a rare coin - find an 18th Century coin called the 'Brasher Doubloon'. Everybody knew who had stolen it,but nobody was anxious to do anything about it.Marlowe couldn't understand why the old lady,Mrs. Elizabeth Bright Murdock - an old Pasadena lush, had hired him; she didn't seem to like detectives and she didn't want to tell him much.So he started to think about her,and then about the pale, fragile, frightened little girl who was her secretary, and then about her son - which led him the the gambler, and then to the gamblers luscious and lustful wife, and then to the elegant blackmailer. And so this case became a study of character, for even when murder was done, even after the second murder, character was the root of eveything.Because he understood that,Marlowe went step by step to a solution of the case. Of the issued volumes, four of his major works: 'The Big Sleep (1939),'Farewell,My Lovely' (1940),'The Lady in the Lake' (1943),and 'The Long Goodbye' (1954),all of which were made into very popular films. The novel is the basis of two '40s films: filmed twice, first as 'Time to Kill' in 1943,and then in 1947,as 'The Brasher Doubloon' with George Montgomery as Marlowe. The Folio Society’s formula for success is publishing books with exceptional typography, illustrations, paper and bindings. The Society sources new introductions from literary experts to accompany classic texts and uses skilled designers and master printers to produce memorable fine books.Fiction and non-fiction titles are published. The Folio Society also prides itself on producing series of an author's works which regular publishers might not think economic - in several cases it is only possible to acquire forgotten books by major writers in Folio Society editions. Author's 6th and critically acclaimed novel, once again, featuring hard-boiled private eye Philip Marlowe. In 1955,the novel received the Edgar Award for Best Novel. 'The Long Goodbye' is another of Chandler's novels, centred on his famous, iconic detective Philip Marlowe. Some critics considered it inferior to 'The Big Sleep' or 'Farewell, My Lovely',others ranked it as the best of his work.Chandler himself,in a letter to a friend, called the novel "my best book" and recalled the agony of writing it while his wife was terminally ill. The novel is notable for using the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction as a vehicle for social criticism,as well as for including autobiographical elements from Chandler's life and therefore is his most personal novel. The novel contains two characters obviously based on Chandler himself and both of them highlight Chandler's awareness of his own flaws such as alcoholism as well as his insecurities (e.g., in the value of his writing). The most obvious Chandler substitute is the usually drunken author Roger Wade character.Like Chandler,Wade had a string of successful novels behind him but as he got older he found it more difficult to write. Also, like Chandler,Wade's novels (romantic fiction) were viewed by many as not real literature and Wade obviously has the desire to be thought of as a serious author.Wade also stands in for Chandler in discussions about literature, e.g., praising F. Scott Fitzgerald. The other Chandler 'stand-in' character was Terry Lennox.Lennox was also an alcoholic. Also, like Chandler he had been in a war and the war had left emotional scars. In Lennox's case it was the Second World War; in Chandler's case it was WW1. In the plot,Lennox was a Canadian citizen but he had spent a great deal of time in England and retained the more restrained and formal attitude of an English gentleman. This made him somewhat of an anomaly in the fast paced and more informal world of wealthy Los Angeles that he inhabited due to his wife's money.Chandler himself, was also raised in England and received a classical education there. Of the issued volumes, four of his major works: 'The Big Sleep (1939),'Farewell, My Lovely' (1940),'The Lady in the Lake' (1943),and 'The Long Goodbye' (1954),all of which were made into very popular films. This novel the basis for the 1973, United Artists film that starred Elliot Gould with Nina van Pallandt and Sterling Hayden, directed by Robert Altman. Raymond Chandler (1888-1959),born Chicago, grew up in England.Served in RAF in World War I.As an ex-journalist and ousted oil executive,Chandler only began writing in 1933 at the age of 45, publishing stories in Black Mask magazine. Jung Chang's 'Wild Swans' was an extraordinary bestseller throughout the world, selling more than 10 million copies and reaching a wider readership than any other book about China. Now she and her husband Jon Halliday have written a groundbreaking biography of Mao Tse-tung. Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before - and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him - this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology; his intimate and intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s,ultimately bringing him to power; he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China; and he schemed, poisoned and blackmailed to get his way. After Mao conquered China in 1949,his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. In all, over 70 million Chinese perished under Mao's rule - in peacetime. Combining meticulous history with the storytelling style of 'Wild Swans',this biography makes immediate Mao's roller-coaster life,as he intrigued and fought every step of the way to force through his unpopular decisions. The reader enters the shadowy chambers of Mao's court, and eavesdrops on the drama in its hidden recesses.Mao's character and the enormity of his behaviour towards his wives, mistresses and children are unveiled for the first time. This is an entirely fresh look at Mao in both content and approach. It will astonish historians and the general reader alike. The Celts - that artistically rich, magnificent people whose legendary history culminated in the heroic reign of King Arthur - have long been a source of wonder for many.Their heritage is a treasure trove: stories of epic heroism,of women who fought alongside their men,of giants and towering challenge,of ultimate sacrifice joyously given,of magnificent courage and high humour,of myth, magic, marvel - and through it all,the scarlet thread of tragic realism that governed a people beset by the constantly recurring threat of extinction. Because the Celts themselves had no written tradition,Joy Chant has chosen to tell their magnificent legends as they had been told in their own time - by bards around a campfire,or at the courts of their High Kings. And for time and place she has chosen the last great Celtic court - that of King Arthur - setting each tale within a framework that includes a note about the historical or cultural background. Each legend is illuminated by the paintings of George Sharp, who worked closely with the author and editor every step of the way.In addition to the full colour plates and the illustrations,David Larkin, art designer for the book, has selected Celtic decorative patterns, maps and reproductions of their marvellous bronze and gold artifacts to enhance the stories and notes. The result is high drama,an extraordinary overview of the legends of the Celts, placing them in relation to the state of mind of Arthur's people as they gathered themselves for the final defence of their way of life. Here, then,is a unique volume that combines rich visual imagery with sweeping epic, and captures the lives of the Celts through the great historic myths that bred them. Joy Chant is best known as a writer of fantasy. Readers first encountered her imaginary world of Vandarei, peopled by the Khentorei,(wandering nomads whose gods include a magnificent equine divinity, along with many other races and tribes) in 'Red Moon,Black Mountain',and 'Grey Mane of Morning.' George Sharp started painting professionally in 1975,doing book covers and a wide variety of commissions for various kinds of illustration requirements.'The High Kings' is his first full-length book of illustration. His paintings are always meticulously authentic, and in fact,he became so fascinated by his subject that he sought out Celtic artifacts in museums all over Britain, had costumes woven to Celtic patterns for his models, and himself re-created an actual full-scale replica of the marvellously engineered (and,of course, carved and decorated) Celtic chariot. Earlier he had grown up in Nottingham,England, completing his artistic education at the Nottingham School of Art.He has been a typographer and graphic designer, art director and creative director in advertising, and eventually Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at the Middlesex Polytechnic in London,a position he left to follow his fulltime painting career, of which this book is one happy result. Top edges lightly aged/toned with sporadic blemish,fore-edges brighter and cleaner and with virtually no foxing; contents exceptionally bright, tight and clean - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.Previous owner has however, all in the same ink-colour felt-tip, coloured the wheels on gypsy's caravan on front pastedown and randomly elsewhere: [pp71 - the sea to horizon in one panel,Rupert's pyjamas in 2 panels on pp98 also with a word underlined too,pp99 caption to strip coloured over its length,pp100 - soles of Rupert's boots also coloured in,and lastly, also pp101 - ladies hat in strip's panel.Described hard but fairly and honestly - the only standout, obvious faults.UK, slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,4-115pp [paginated] includes 5 colour strip stories,1pp Origami instructions+illustrations to make Rupert's Chinese boat, quiz & puzzle pages (1 of each) - ALL untouched,a colour pictorial publisher's advert for other Rupert strip stories in the Daily Express newspaper with puzzles' solutions to foot of same,as the last page.Cover: Rupert talking to a merboy who is in the sea and holding a sea-shell full of assorted fruit, and assorted other friends laying out food for a picnic extending round to rear cover.First story: Rupert and the Little River,(1963); plus 4 others - Rupert and the Thinking Cap (1956-7), Rupert and the Broken Plate (1954),Rupert and the Blue Star (1960) and Rupert and the Winter Sale (1960). Want more RUPERT titles? For similar and other available titles - please search my CHILDRENS/ILLUSTRATED catalogue. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's annual, and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation, other than the aforementioned colouring inside. These detractions preventing a better grading.
