UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn. FINE.Residual impression of removal of owner's pencilled name to a white area of illustrated colour pictorial endpapers and not on the designated 'This Book Belongs To dotted line at foot of same, but no price-clip (60p).Bright, crisp,clean,glossy/glazed,wrap-around colour pictorial illustrated card boards and colour pictorial illustrated endpapers,by Alex CUBIE; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks tears or splits present. Both head+foot of spine/bacstrip gently pushed, some minor wrinkle creases to either board, inevitable but very minor and minimal, superficial scoring/indents to boards, and corner tips gently curled.Top+fore-edges ubiquitously but slightly aged/toned but without foxing/ spotting; contents though are bright, tight and clean with no foxing/spotting,no nicks or tears present - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - virtually pristine, appears unread apart from my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,1st edn,2-115pp [paginated] includes 4 colour strip stories,1pp origami instructions+illus to make Rupert's paper yacht,a puzzle to the contents page,a nursery rhyme puzzle-page, and publisher's colour pictorial illustrated advert for daily Rupert stories in the Daily Express newspaper with puzzles solutions at foot of same,as the last page.Cover: Rupert in snow, holding a small mini snowman made from snow, with split wooden peg for its nose.Algy standing nearby making another couple of them and other Nutwood friends/characters in the background extending round to the rear board.Rupert has a brown face.First story: Rupert and the Iron Spade (1963); plus 3 others - Rupert and Jenny Frost (1963), Rupert and the Secret Path (1961) and Rupert and the Little Bells (1962-3). Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's annual, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading. The Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November,1920.) Bestall took over from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures. He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.Alex CUBIE's first annual's covers and endpapers that he illustrated. Alex CUBIE [1911-1995] b.1st August 1911, Renfrew, near Glasgow. He was encouraged or interested in art at school.Started as an apprentice lithographic artist in Glasgow producing cartoons for the 'Glasgow Evening Citizen'.Moved to London,1934 where he worked in Fleet Street producing cartoons for 'The Daily Sketch' and 'The Leader'.Called up for Army service in 1940,he originally trained as a fitter. On discovering his artistic talents, the Army transferred him to an all ranks design team, where he drew layouts for tactical excercises. After the war he returned to Fleet Street, designing greeting cards, before joining Rank Organisation's studios in Cookham and the team for animated film production under the direction of Walt Disney's David Hand. From about 1951 he worked for the Daily Express as a general artist, and was later brought in to assist Alfred BESTALL,as that illustrator's health began to fail.He also produced a number of puzzles and Magic Painting pages.Alex CUBIE took over the illustrating of the Rupert character as Alfred BESTALL retired in 1965 and he subsequently illustrated the annuals from 1974 until 1977. Edition: UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , No dw/dj - as issued.

,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn.VG+. Owner's childish handwritten Christian name (female) to Belongs To panel, but no price-clip (£1.15p) to colour pictorial illustrated title page.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial illustrated card boards and colour pictorial illustrated endpapers by John HARROLD; with negligible shelf-wear, bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present, corner tips inevitably but minisculely bumped and gently turned inwards and both front+rear hinges intact, with no cracking. Both top edges inexplicably with baby teeth-shaped imprints, front board with ubquitous but minimal, superficial and random scoring/indents,rear board with assumed biro-pen deliberate,child-like scribbling indents, but clean and without the inking to a couple of areas - reads worse than sounds or actually is! Top+fore-edges aged/ toned without further blemish; contents bright, tight, crisp and clean - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips,no nicks or tears,no foxing/spotting present. However, bottom edges of pp34-36 with small ink scribble to first page's edge, following pages with a single, small inked cat's face cartoon/doodle - no other pages edges or story panels touched or similarly affected - though there is a short vertical ink line and small rectangle shaped doodle to recto of puzzle's solutions colour illustrated last page, and a biro-inked scribble to rear pastedown's illustrated endpaper.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,4-115pp [paginated] includes 5,colour strip stories,a 2pp origami instructions+illus to make Rupert's paper seagull,a puzzle page - untouched, and publisher's colour pictorial advert for other Rupert strip stories in the Daily Express newspaper, with puzzle's solutions to foot of same,as last page.Cover: Rupert, with a brown face, waving to reader, holding onto a pony-drawn sledge-like vehicle, with his left hand.Other Nutwood characters/friends in the background, Beppo,in particular,to lower right-hand corner. First story: Rupert and the Rivals (1963); plus 4 others - Rupert and the Squire (1959),Rupert and the Boffit (1965),Rupert and the Secret Shell (1965),and Rupert's Odd Party (1964-5). Visually, appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the faults described that prevent a higher grading. Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for completeness, brightness and cleanliness. Described scrupulously and honestly, first reading sounds horrendous, but these faults are small in appearance and at first glance, first impression would be of how well the book presents itself, until a detailed and closer inspection finds the small list of faults. Want more RUPERT titles? For similar and other available titles - please search my CHILDRENS/ILLUSTRATED catalogue. John Harrold took over the illustrating of the Rupert character as Alex CUBIE had retired, and who'd illustrated the previous annuals from 1974 until 1978. John Harrold was born in Glasgow,1947,and studied art there at the Glasgow School of Art situated in the Charles Rennie Mackintosh building. His first job as a Rupert illustrator was on 'Fun to Cook with Rupert' (drawn in 1973, published 1974).The editor,Frederick Chaplain was impressed and invited him to work for the Daily Express. His first story,Rupert and the Worried Elves, began on 14 October 1976,and in the same year he produced games pages for the annuals. This edn was his first annual, and he has drawn the covers and end-papers for the annuals since this.Up to now (then 1997),has been illustrating the little bear's adventures for longer than Mary Tourtel, and those children who were brought up on his first adventures are now mature adults. Upstairs and downstairs all the birds played their part in looking after it.In the gardens, the village and on the farm, the birds and animals worked together,in harmony with nature, to preserve the traditions and idyllic way of life that have disappeared long ago.  Foreword by Julian Fellowes: 'The Manor House Stories create a wonderful and detailed world in miniature full of truth and consequence, like all good stories should, giving us lessons about life but in the most charming way imaginable. No one can accuse the books of soft-soaping the realities of work in a great house, there is plenty of elbow grease required from all the animals and birds employed there,as I should know, but you will find kindness in these pages too,and I suppose I believe that while fate may be challenging for everyone, there is often some kindness in the mix.In my experience anyway. These lovely little tales contain comments and observations that will be very useful to young readers in the years to come, and they will be useful to older readers, too,if I am anything to go by. - Julian Fellowes.'                        The stories follow the adventures of the characters and their duties, from the lowliest scullery maid upwards through the ranks of the household to the head of the family. From time to time surprising visitors arrive at the House; from a Princess to a pirate, you never know who may appear to cast their magic and mischief over the Manor House. . .  The first snow has fallen, and the youngsters have fun in the garden.A mysterious visitor arrives in a beautiful sleigh.Ermintine the Stoat makes an ice sculpture and is rewarded with a special gift. "Whee!" they shrieked,as they sped down the snowy slope, gathering speed as they went. The little sledge went faster and faster, then faster still.Cream held onto Sugar, who held onto Sebastian, who clung on tightly to Miranda who was in front.                        The Manor House Stories were written by Jani some 25 years ago for her children when she was living in Devon. They remained undiscovered until a chance meeting in Corfu in 2011 when she met her publisher, since which time the many wonderful illustrations have been added and the series of twelve stories finally brought back to life.  Written and illustrated by Jani, based on her observations and inspirations while raising her two children,Rory and Miranda,at their family home in the heart of the Devonshire countryside. Working in watercolour and gouache provides a perfect medium for her delicate and finely detailed style; her subjects reflect facets of her experience, her infectious personality and quirky sense of humour, which combine easily with her skills as a meticulous observer of nature and interest in disappearing traditional rural customs and gentler ways of life. An established designer with a large selection of nature and wildlife illustrations to her credit. Many of these have been licensed and commissioned both at home in the UK and worldwide to great acclaim.    Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight and small size of this item, for correct shipping/ P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!   N.B. This 3rd title sold out immediately on publication and was only available from the author directly, whilst awaiting a new publisher and is very scarce. These stories are loosely themed on the months of the year. There is a circularity to the series,as will be seen when all 12 books are published, although each book stands on its own. The January,March and December [the 1st,3rd and 12th books] have all first edition copies sold out,and the author expects to reprint these titles in due course. Somewhere deep in the heart of the English countryside, many years ago, stood a large Manor House. In the House lived a family of birds. Upstairs and downstairs all the birds played their part in looking after it.In the gardens, the village and on the farm, the birds and animals worked together,in harmony with nature, to preserve the traditions and idyllic way of life that have disappeared long ago.The stories follow the adventures of the characters and their duties, from the lowliest scullery maid upwards through the ranks of the household to the head of the family. From time to time surprising visitors arrive at the House; from a Princess to a pirate, you never know who may appear to cast their magic and mischief over the Manor House. . . - Julian Fellowes.' In 'Lady Davina Dove: A CHRISTMAS STORY - The Manor House Stories.' Christmas has come to the Manor House.Everyone is busy preparing for the merrymaking.Stockings are hung, the Christmas tree is decorated, and Father Christmas arrives by moonlight. On Christmas Day Lady Davina's secret wish comes true. "Suddenly Lady Davina saw something in the sky.Silhouetted against its bright light,a miniature sleigh pulled by eight tiny reindeer flew in front of the moon, circling the Manor House." The Manor House Stories were written by Jani some 25 years ago for her children when she was living in Devon. They remained undiscovered until a chance meeting in Corfu in 2011 when she met her publisher, since which time the many wonderful illustrations have been added and the series of twelve stories finally brought back to life.Written and illustrated by Jani, based on her observations and inspirations while raising her two children,Rory and Miranda,at their family home in the heart of the Devonshire countryside. Working in watercolour and gouache provides a perfect medium for her delicate and finely detailed style; her subjects reflect facets of her experience, her infectious personality and quirky sense of humour, which combine easily with her skills as a meticulous observer of nature and interest in disappearing traditional rural customs and gentler ways of life.An established designer with a large selection of nature and wildlife illustrations to her credit. Many of these have been licensed and commissioned both at home in the UK and worldwide to great acclaim. A silver-screen world of wonder and make- believe. It is difficult to over-emphasize what an impact the arrival of movies had on the people of Devon. For the first time here was an entertainment that could reach into the most remote villages, bringing flickering visions of worlds previously beyond imagining. From daily newsreels of the silent era,to the Golden Age of cinema in the 1930's and 40's,the people of Devon came to know the stars of the silver screen whose glamorous and romantic lives became the talk of schoolyard and village square. In this remarkable book,Gordon Chapman, provides a complete illustrated history of the cinema in Devon, from the days in which barns were used for makeshift screenings to the building of the modern multiplexes. Devon at the Cinema chronicles the early years of filmgoing, when the screen was a simple sheet pinned up in a local barn. From Barnstaple to Budleigh Salterton, every known cinema building has been indentified and illustrated, from Rex to Regal, and Scala to Savoy. Here too are stories and interviews from the people of Devon revealing just how important the movies were, and still are,in their lives. An illustrated story of the cinema in Devon is long overdue. It is a reminder of the power of the film and its effect on a largely rural population, and an important record of the architectural diversity of picture-houses,many of which no longer exist. It is also a social history, recalling through the words of Devon people their memories of ice-cream tubs and Kia-ora,and of courting couples caught in the beam of the usherette's torch. Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,b/w photographic illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges - a tiny closed tear to upper bd's bottom,right-hand corner and spine/backstrip slightly sunned/faded - as usual/normal.Top edge slightly aged/toned with minimal, sporadic spotting/foxing; fore-edges brighter and cleaner, contents bright, tight and near pristine - no dog-ear creases to any pages' corners. Chris Chapman's remarkable photographs embody much that is real and relevant in rural life today. His pictures speak not of technique but of honesty.Farm hands, craftsmen, gypsies and animals gaze directly into a lens which portrays them with affection, compassion, sometimes anger, more often sheer enjoyment; always truth. Though most of the classic elements of country living are here - the village with its church and pub; the vicar, policeman and local poacher; the weekly market the WI; hunting, shooting and fishing; farming and trades - this is no chocolate-box view of rustic thatch, simple characters and noble beasts in an enchanting landscape. Rather,it is a revealing survey of a countryside which, while ageless in its beauty,is constantly evolving in the daily round. The perceptive introductory text by the well-known writer on the rural scene, Ian Niall, and the general commentary on aspects of modern country society, from fetes and festivals to farm sales and forestry, provide a stimulating background to the portraits, many of which simply speak for themselves. This is a book to be taken up time and again, for on each occasion the reader will gain something new, whether or not he thinks that life is preferable on this particular side of the hedge. When a woman's crumpled body is discovered in a gas-filled flat in the Primrose Hill area of north London,it looks like just another suicide. But Detective Inspector Christy Kennedy isn't so sure, especially when the dead woman is revealed as famous American singer-songwriter,Esther Bluewood. Kennedy and his regular team of DS James Irvine and DC Anne Coles piece together the life and loves of Esther Bluewood and discover levels of greed, love, jealousy and intrigue that surprise even them. Then, just as the truth looks like emerging, one of the 'suspects' is murdered in a bizarre fashion . . . To make matters worse,Kennedy discovers that his own estranged girlfriend, ann rea - always lower-case "a" and "r" - was a confidante of Esther Bluewood and his investigation leads him reluctantly to her door. In this fifth Christy Kennedy mystery, the Camden Town detective finds himself investigating a case heavy with sudden death and intrigue, that comes with more twists and turns than the road from Kingsmarkham to St Mary Mead.Part whodunnit, part howdunnit, part love story, it again features a unique method of murder that has become Paul Charles' trademark,as well as characters that practically leap off the page. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in his year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! The author is a Senior Historian at the Imperial War Museums. "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!" was the poster slogan that shouted out to the people of Britain during the First World War.As men of all ages responded to the call by joining the forces and leaving their homes and jobs,so those left behind were forced to step up and take their place.Food shortages, rationing, the first 'Blitz' and the appearance of women in the workplace all became familiar. Drawing on the archives of Imperial War Museums, author Terry Charman presents a lively and evocative portrait of life on the Home Front in the first World War.Filled with absorbing first-hand accounts newly researched from diaries, letters and newspaper reports, his book reveals in vivid and immensely personal detail how life changed in Britain between 1914 and 1918. From the draconian effects of DORA (Defence of the Realm Act) and the threat of Zeppelin raids, to government propaganda and the power of the press,'The First World War on the Home Front' recalls how the people of Britain not only confronted the direct threats to their country but also prepared for the fact that life would never be the same again. Described hard, but fairly and honestly; much better than it reads or sounds and still an acceptable example for 'Saint'/ PAN collectors. The author's 3rd book featuring Simon Templar. ENTER THE SAINT. There is only one Saint - Simon Templar, buccaneer in the suits of Savile Row,amused, cool, debonair, with hell-for-leather blue eyes and a saintly smile. Chief Inspector Teal would have given ten years' salary for the privilege of leading the Saint gently by the arm into the nearest police station; a number of gentlemen in the underworld would have given ten years' liberty for the pleasure of transporting the Saint to the top of the chute of a blast-furnace and quietly back-heeling him into the stew; but somehow the Saint contrived to go his pleasantly piratical way unscathed. Simon Templar - The Saint, daring, dazzling, and just a little disreputable. On the side of the law,but standing outside it,he dispenses his own brand of justice one criminal at a time.In these three early adventures, the Saint's reputation starts to rise,as he tackles thieves, smugglers and killers. In 'The Man Who Was Clever' he outwits Edgar Hayn,a drug smuggler who thinks he's smarter than everyone. In 'The Policeman with Wings' he stays one step ahead of Inspector Teal in the hunt for diamonds on Dartmoor, and in 'The Lawless Lady' one of the Saint's gang helps him deal with sea-faring swindlers, only to fall in love. There was once a proud general who fell off his horse, only to discover the beauty of the flowers on the ground around him. From that day on,he vowed to change the world into a place of peace and beauty. Fifty years ago,at the height of the Cold War,a young couple produced a new kind of book for children. It confronted the folly of war and the threat to the environment. This Anniversary Edition is jst as fresh and relevant today as it was then. This is award-winning illustrator Michael Foreman's debut picture book, which was first created in the early 1960s.It is reproduced here in all its glory for a new generation. Janet Charters (Foreman's former wife, [now Abis]) was born in England in 1938,on the eve of the Second World War.Growing up in the uncertain atmosphere created by the Cold War and the nuclear arms race,Janet developed an acute awareness of the fragility of peace. She studied at St. Martin's School of Art,where she met fellow student Michael Foreman.Janet currently lives in London with two beautiful cats and a slightly wild garden. She continues to paint and exhibits her work regularly. Michael Foreman was also born in England in 1938.Having not known a world without war,he thought it was normal. One frightful night while a three-year-old Michael lay fast asleep,a bomb came crashing through his bedroom ceiling - this was his first memory. The bomb missed him by a few centimetres, bounced on the floor, hit the wall and then dropped into the fireplace, where it exploded up the chimney. When the war ended,Michal looked forward to a world of peace, but unfortunately his teenage years were lived under the threat of nuclear war. In creating their first book,'The General',Janet and Michael wanted to produce a fun and lively story that encouraged a sympathetic outlook on the world. Now,almost fifty years later, the book seems even more relevant as not only the need for peace but also the threat to the environment, hinted at in the story, are both plain for all to see. Michael Foreman, born Pakefield,Suffolk, 1938.Studied at Lowestoft School of Art and at the Royal College of Art.Lecturer at St Martin's School of Art (1963-65),the London College of Printing (1967/8),the Royal College of Art (1968-70) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1972). Art Director of Playboy magazine,Chicago (1965) and the King Magazine,London (1966).Painter,etcher,illustrator and writer of children's books. His illustrative work is distinctive: he often works in colour or halftone, creating luminous effects with veils of thinly diluted pigment over delicate pencil outlines; in his etched illustrations,he uses soft ground techniques to achieve subtle tonal graduations. His imagery, ostensibly decorative, humorous or with a sometimes child-like appearance, often has menacing or bizarre overtones.Michael Foreman is a three-time Kate Greenaway Medal winner. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Author' third book and his first novel, and winner of the Whitbread Literary Award,1982.A curious book for Chatwin to have written, given that he spent most of his short life traveling and then writing about it. It concerns eighty years in the lives of Benjamin and Lewis, identical twins from the Welsh border country, who remain for that entire period either within or near an isolated farm on which they live and subsequently work.Apart from a brief period in the Army, from which Benjamin is dishonourably discharged, they avoid the draft for the First World War,they never marry, and after the death of their parents, they sleep in the parents' bed for over forty years. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn, but author's neat, handwritten, black ink signature - without dedication - to title page, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated, colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear to edges - no nicks or tears present.Book slightly cocked, all corners minisculely rubbed with reciprocal loss, and head+foot of spine/ backstrip minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing.Top edge slightly aged,fore-edges brighter, contents bright, tight and clean. Bright, clean, publisher's original, plain light blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt letters to spine/ backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn,1- 322pp [paginated] includes 30 chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, acknowledgements, dedication, and last two pages. Plump, virginal Janice Gentle reluctantly writes her delicate romances with goal view,to make enough money to find the man she loved and lost twenty years ago. Before she begins each new book she must journey on a morning tube train and find her central characters from among the real- life travellers. This time it is a square- jawed young man with love problems,a perfect Little Blonde Secretary Bird with a head full of romance, and a vicar's wife from Cockermouth with a passionate secret. Janice plans her neatly perfect fiction around these three - but what happens to them when they leave the train? Three traveller's tales,a lover's pilgrimage and an obsession with the Chivalric Ideal mingle in a satire on publishing,a paean for love and a tilt at contemporary careless times.Janice Gentle wins through but her tube-train travellers remain,in their ordinary lives, muddling and suffering along, just like the rest of us. . . . A really exceptional example particularly for it's cleanliness, given the books age and without the protection of any dw/dj. 'M. Cheradame explains - and I believe with perfect accuracy - the nature of the German objective. It is,in his opinion,to lay secure and stable foundations for the system known as Pan- Germanism.' 'Pan-Germanism or Pan-Germanicism is a pan-nationalist political idea.Pan-Germanists originally sought to unify all the German and possibly also Germanic-speaking peoples in a single nation-state known as Großdeutschland. As a political policy it was particularly and highly influential in German politics in the 19th century during the unification of Germany when the German Empire was proclaimed as a nation-state in 1871 but without Austria. One interpretation may be given to the word, which is NOT merely innocuous, but which may even reasonably appeal to the sympathies of those who approve of the new map of Europe being constituted with a view to applying that nationalistic principle, which finds almost universal favour in all democratic countries. It cannot be too distinctly understood that the political programme advocated by Germany has NO sort of affinity with a plan of this sort. The Germans contend that not only that all those who are generally denominated Germans by the rest of the world should be united, but that all who are what is termed "German origin" should be brought into the German fold. Moreover, they give to this latter phrase an expansion and signification which is condemned and derided by all who have paid serious attention to ethnological studies. The object of the German Government is to effect the whole or partial Germanization of countries inhabited by races which cannot,by any conceivable ethnological process of reasoning,be held to be of German stock. Cheradame correctly describes Pan-Germanism as its object is to disregard all questions of racial and linguistic affinity and to absorb huge tracts of country the possession of which is considered useful to advance Hohenzollern interests. In other words, what they wish to establish, under the name of Pan-Germanism,a world system whose leading and most immediate feature is the creation of an empire stretching from the Persian Gulf to the North Sea. Cheradame (1871-1948) was a French journalist and scholar from the Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques, who also worked for the French newspaper Le Petit Journal. He became known for his books about the geopolitics of Europe during the first half of the 20th century, mainly the aspects of German militarism and its expansionist policies. He predicted, even before the two World Wars, that the German General Staff would have a main role in planning military aggressions with the aim of creating a Greater Germany that would first engulf Central-Eastern Europe, then all of Europe, and by 1950 the rest of the world. He predicted that only by dismantling the militarist German elites and institutions Germany itself would be at peace with the rest of Europe, which the Allies did in fact achieve after WWII, dissolving both Prussia and the German General Staff. FINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, but co-author (subject) signed and inscribed:'Best Wishes Vivien Cherry' to half-title-page, and price-clip to dw/dj.Crisp,bright, clean, glossy laminated colour photographic dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight and pristine. Publisher's original blue cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white eps.8vo,contents list,double-page b/w map (The British Steel Challenge 1992-1993 yacht race),preface,HRH Princess Royal foreword,5 parts - pre-race+Legs 1-4 comprising 15 chapters,8pp colour photographs in 2 blocks of 4pp each, between pp68/9 and pp104/5 respectively, appendices (2). Experts told Chay Blyth he was mad.No one would pay £15,000 to be wet, cold and hungry, racing around the world in a yacht against the prevailing wind and currents. Within 48 hours of the British Steel Challenge being announced Blyth had confounded the sceptics. He was sold out three times over and had his 130 crew volunteers. But what of the 10 skippers he hired to drive, cajole and coach the amateur helmsmen 28,000 miles around the globe? Although experienced racing sailors in their own right, this small group were to be placed in a unique and taxing role. Half nanny, half slavedriver, each skipper discovered the true loneliness of command. Vivien Cherry was the sole woman amongst the 10.At 32 she had a successful career as an environmental engineer and a background as a single-handed ocean racer when she signed up with the Challenge. Instantly her yacht,Coopers & Lybrand, became the focus of intense media attention. Each leg of the race presented its own difficulties - navigational and human. Stopovers often presented more dramas than the weeks at sea.And in mid-race Viv's own leg became a factor when she became immobilised with a damaged knee needing immediate surgery.By the finish line in the Solent, the race that started with doubts ended with a fanfare.Vivien's journey was both a part of that voyage and a compelling individual story of an unusual sailor in a unique situation. Visually the exterior appearance is mkore than acceptable, and particularly internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s twenty-year-old age.It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a higher grading. Despite them,it really is still a more than acceptable copy for its cleanliness and brightness. In 1985,forty hooligan followers of Stoke City FC experienced a riotous trip to Portsmouth - and the Naughty Forty was born.It became one of the most notorious soccer gangs in Britain. Mark Chester was a founder member of the N40. Already a hardened fighter,he had been expelled from school after an unsettled childhood and joined the Staffordshire Regiment, only to be discharged for misconduct. Stoke City's emerging 'casual' mob became his family. 'Right or wrong,I was ready to be a committed football hooligan,' he says. He recounts tales of raucous coach trips from the Glebe pub and the pivotal clashes with the likes of Everton,Manchester United and West Ham that defined the new firm. Formidable characters came to the forefront, men like the giant Mark Bentley,Philler the Beast and the legendary Miffer, while hair-raising clashes with the likes of Millwall, Spurs,Aston Villa and Manchester City saw the gang's reputation spread. The N40 code was simple: whatever the odds, they would always make a stand. Many times they fought when heavily outnumbered yet often came out on top. They developed a closeness and cohesion rare among the football gangs. Loyalty was their watchword. Soon they were joined by the Under-Fives,a younger element determined to win acceptance from the terrace legends they admired and who carved out their own niche as well as fighting side by side with the old-school heads. Police operations, bans from the ground and the introduction of ID schemes have prevented many from attending games, but the author, long 'retired' from the scene, argues that in the new millennium the gangs are back - and as ferocious as ever. 'NAUGHTY' is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand the illicit but seductive lure of terrace combat, the emotional ties of a gang and the addictive buzz of Saturday afternoons. A novel which,in one sense,is the sequel to 'Tales of the Long Bow' (it even has a recurring character); in another sense,it is the sequel to all his novels: softly whimsical and sharply pointed. Some consider it Chesterton's most finely crafted novel. Michael Herne,a mild librarian - erudite but a recluse - playing the role of a medieval king in play, decides at the end of the performance to keep wearing his costume and head off into the real world as the champion of trade unions to do battle against the modern industrial state. Since the oldies could no longer reproduce their own kind, mankind seemed doomed. But Peter Croft, with two companions, convinced that mankind's only hope lies not in physical conquest of the Brats but in some way through them,is forced to leave the village with its oldier inhabitants in search of a solution. What that solution is,and whether it represents anarchy or order, salvation or destruction,is Chetwynd-Hayes' absorbing and riveting theme for this outstanding novel of the future. THE PARTAKER - A NOVEL OF FANTASY.

Imprint: LONDON.WILLIAM KIMBER & CO.,LIMITED,1980.
Edition: UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial artwork by Roger Garland, illustrated dw/dj,with red lettering to front and spine; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present.A couple of small closed tears: front lower corner and front gutter's edge atf head of spine/ backstrip. To the spine/backstrip of dw/dj,some minor indents without penetration but leaving some minimal impressions on spine beneath and similarly to front panel and board.A tiny penetrating incision on front board's spine/ gutter's edge fold of dw/dj - very lightly impressing the concomitant spot beneath.Top+fore -edges generally bright and clean - free of foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread - apart from my own collation. Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, original plain black cloth boards with aforementioned indents/impress marks, with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/ backstrip and clean plain white front endpapers+ pastedown; the rear pastedown with residual shadow/ghost of circular label removal.UK,slim 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,12-224pp [paginated] includes Books One and Two comprising 8 chapters and another section and 7 chapters respectively; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages,a contents list/table,Vampire Fiction & Fact description page and individual Books 1+2 separator pages. Described hard but fairly and honestly - nowhere as bad as it reads or sounds.Basically the dw/dj with it's concomitant light imperfections to the book's boards/covers that are the minor detractions. The book contents exceptional and belie it's outward appearance! The author's 3rd novel, see my book ID rja638 - 'The Brats' - for his 2nd novel for this publisher, following on from the debut with 'The Cradle Demon'.This edition is no longer in print as the publisher ceased trading mid 1980's. The partaker is a little known species of vampire, only to be found now in small groups (or nests) in isolated communities. Possessed of a superhuman strength and beauty, and often immortal, they prefer to live quietly, out of the curious gaze of meat-eaters.Or they did - until Carlos Markland was born. Carlos, the first partaker cub to be born for hundreds of years, presents a problem, for as a growing child he has to be absorbed into the state educational system. And from his first day at school, disaster overtakes first the partakers, and then humankind. 'Never, never drain' was the maxim that all partakers lived by.But Carlos ignored the rule, and set in train a series of horrors that threatened the end of the civilised world. William Kimber himself, worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation, war memoirs, autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty. This title is one of published in this year,19 ,by KIMBER. William Kimber was purchased by Thorsons in 1988 and therefore ceased publishing under that name.Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990, and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that, making all previously published titles by them,out-of-print,under that name.
