THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD.

Imprint: LONDON.COLLINS,1926.
Edition: UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.
Binding: Hardback , Minus issued dw/dj.
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn.[True 1st edn in the book's ORIGINAL boards and not recased, not rebound - but as it was genuinely and originally published and is therefore unadulterated.] VG+. Owner's black ink name+address to ffe.Blue cloth boards, with bright, crisp, blocked red ink double-lined bordered edges to upper board; bright, crisp, blocked capitalised red ink lettered title+author within the bordered front cover, similarly lettered+coloured lettering to spine/ backstrip, along with publisher's capitalised, red-lettered name and red illustrated colophon, to foot of same; rear plain and undecorated. Minimally rubbed,shelf-worn edges, with some minimal fading to same.Head+foot of spine/ backstrip lightly creased and slightly darkened. Top+fore-edges unusually, are very lightly aged/ toned - but remarkably - are virtually foxing/ spotting-free with very little other blemish to them.Very little, sporadic, random spotting/foxing internally, though there are two small spots (grease?) on pp21/22 which have bled through each direction to pp17 and to pp25 respectively. To pp147/8 there is a little light crease to page edge and same to following page (pp149/50) but with a miniscule closed tear.Although described hard but fairly and honestly, otherwise it is still a solid and a sound copy. Author's seventh mystery novel and the third to feature Hercule Poirot. Regarded by many authorities to be the finest and most controversial of her works, this was her first work for Collins,June,1926.Collins, published all the British first editions of her work with the exception of four; 'The Underdog', 'The Floating Admiral','The Hound of Death' and 'The Scoop and Behind the Screen' - and well over seventy books. 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd' was also the first of Agatha Christie's books to be dramatised - under the name 'Alibi' - and to have a successful run in the West End where it gave Charles Laughton,in the role of Poirot, one of his first leading parts in the London theatre.Lord Mountbatten is said to have suggested the plot. This story was narrated by the trusted Dr Sheppard, who replaces Hastings as 'Boswell' to Poirot's 'Johnson'.The New York Tribune called the solution 'startling',while on the other hand,The Daily Sketch although thought it 'the best thriller ever',called it 'unforgivable'. Christie was defended by Dorothy L.Sayers on the ethics of this novel's famous denouement pointing out that 'it's the reader's business to suspect everybody'. Regarded as Christie's 'tour de force',it breaks away from the conventions of detective story writing as they were in the 1920's and became the turning point in her career. As all the world knows, the murder was committed by . . . no,one mustn't tell, as there could be someone, somewhere who doesn't know.If you've never done so,read it and find out.And then read it again, for a second time to see how the murderer's tracks are masterfully obscured.CC.] Would make an important and welcome addition to the Christie canon for any collector. THE MURDER AT THE VICARAGE.**

Imprint: LONDON.COLLINS CRIME CLUB,1976.
Edition: UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st thus [Uniform edn].
Binding: Hardback , With Dust Jacket
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn thus.[Uniform edn - the true 1st edn was published in 1930.] FINE/NFINE. No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, clean, crisp colour illustrated dw/dj (3 multi-colour,entwined fishes) with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to edges - two tiny closed tears to head of spine/backstrip - no other tears/nicks present.Miniscule marking/grubbing bleed/transfer to rear wrap, due to proximity of other books against the dw/dj whilst shelved.Top edge minimally and lightly dust-soiled,fore-edge brighter and cleaner; contents bright, tight and pristine - a tiny dog-ear crease to top corner of rear blank the only fault.Publisher's bright, crisp, clean, dark green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt, author's facsimile signature to bottom edge of upper board and gilt lettering to spine/backstrip with immaculate unmarked, plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st thus,6-251pp includes half-title+title pages and 32 chapters. Visually the exterior appearance is almost exceptional, but particularly internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 40+ year-old age.It is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall for the dw/dj.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example for its sharpness, cleanliness and brightness and lack of detraticng faults. The very first Miss Marple detective novel,'The Murder at the Vicarage'. This female detective's first appearance was in six short stories, written in 1927-1928 and this is her first full-length novel appearance, written and published in 1930. In the peaceful village of St Mary Mead nothing ever happens. So it seems almost incredible when Colonel Protheroe, the churchwarden,is discovered shot through the head in the Vicarage study. Everybody thinks they know who has done it - including Miss Marple, the real old maid of the village, who knows everything and sees everything and hears everything. She declares that at least seven people have reasons for wishing Colonel Protheroe out of the way.Excitement dies down when somebody confesses to having committed the crime. But that is not the end,for almost immediately somebody quite different also confesses. And there is a third confession through the telephone. But who really killed Colonel Protheroe? Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! N.B. Collins Sons & Co.,(London),1928.] VG.No owner inscprn and no price removal (2/-) to cover.Bright, glossy, vibrant colour pictorial artwork by PEFF, illustrated front cover, with white and dark grey letters, slightly dulled white letters to cherry-red concave spine with reading creases, rear cover with story precis and author's potted biography; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping, creasing to edges and corner - no nicks or tears present.Front cover with indeterminate smudges(?) across it's top 1/3rd,over the titling.Rear, top corner with a crease leaving a concomitant impression of the fold to some of the later pages' top corners, but in diminishing visibility to them. All edges ubiquitously aged/toned - a small water stain to foot of fore-edge - but no foxing; contents tight, text block clear and visible but, inevitable page-edge toning - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any other pages' corner tips other than from already described corner crease.UK,slim 12mo p/back 1st edn thus,by this publisher,5-188pp [paginated] includes XXXVI(36) chapters; plus [unpaginated] half-title,title page with dedication to reverse, and to the rear,3pp publisher's advert. This appears to be one of his very first commission painting's cover for PAN as,dated 1954,this is the year he went freelance. It also appears to be very SCARCE in this edition as only one internet copy noted so far. One of Christie's early 'Poirot' detective-stories and possibly a thrilling tale that many 'fans' may not have come across before. A famous ruby known as 'Heart of Fire',passes into the possession of a beautiful American woman,Ruth Kettering.Jewels have often, through the course of history, been associated with death and violence, and the 'Heart of Fire' excercises its baneful amd mysterious influence on those who come into contact with it.Ruth Kettering is murdered while travelling across France to the Riviera in the Blue Train. And a quiet English girl,Katherine Grey, who has got into conversation with Mrs Kettering, finds that her conviction that nothing exciting would ever happen to her is suddenly proved false. There is another passenger on the train to whom Katherine had spoken casually - a little man with an egg-shaped head and a fierce moustache. His reply to her remarks is curious and unexpected. And when the train arrives at Nice,Hercule Poirot is called on to unravel a most complicated crime. Samuel John Peffer, known as PEFF,(b. 3rd November,1921 – d. 14th March,2014) was a British commercial artist who designed film posters, and paperback book covers. His best known work was for the covers of the paperback James Bond novels published by PAN BOOKS LTD.,in the 1950s and 1960s,for which he created a consistent and distinctive style. He went freelance around 1954.He was noticed by the Pan Books art buyer,Tony Bowen-Davies,and during the 1950s and 1960s,he painted hundreds of book covers, including from 1957,particularly the Fleming novels 'Casino Royale','Moonraker','From Russia with Love' and 'Dr. No.',all for Pan,as well as many Christie novels. A particularly exceptional example, notwithstanding the book's age - 60 years old for the collector. A highly collected and prolific author, and a item in Christie's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon. The title,a biblical synonym for Death,is the name of an organization which kills by black magic and also the name of a house, formerly an inn,in the local village.A priest summoned to attend a dying woman is later murdered.A list of names is found and the narrator,Mark Easterbrook, discovers unsuspected connections.Novel includes Christie's novelist detective Ariadne Oliver. But here,Mrs Oliver does not function as a detective,in that she rarely participates in the investigation and contributes only tangentially to the solution. She inadvertently helps the investigators to determine the type of poison used to kill the murder victims, thus saving the life of another character. CHRISTY, KIM - Foreword by:
EXOTIQUE - The first 36 issues,1951-57. [3vols HB,Boxed.]

Imprint: GERMANY.KOLN.TASCHEN,1998.
Edition: GERMANY,3 HB vols+s/case.1st edn thus.
Binding: Hardbacks, 3 Vols., No dw/dj - slipcased.
Inscription: Not SIGNED.

German,3 HB vols+slipcase,1st edn thus. [English in body of book.] MINT/MINT.Wrapped+protected from day of issue/purchase.Glossy,pictorial colour decorated boards and spines/backstrips, with pictorial colour decorated endpapers.Though the fore-word is in German and French as well as English, the text thereafter is English.Profuse b/w photographs,b/w illus,b/w strip cartoons throughout the 3 vols. A fresh subculture of the exotic was gathering feverishly in the night. Hollywood and in particular the film noir of the late forties and fifties had re-invented the position of women and female fashion in popular culture.Femme fatales like Rita Hayworth,Barbara Stanwyck or Jane Greer deployed revealing clothes and jewellery to provoke and seduce weak-willed men into their illegal, perverse schemes.Women began to move towards a new look in fashion, introduced by Christian Dior, that made their femininity visible, and by implication gave them power over men.Underwear became more complex and interesting - garter belts, waist cinchers, silk stockings, high heels - it was all buckled, laced and strapped together, exaggerating the figure while turning up the heat when the time came to disrobe. Dressing up and stripping off were all part of the process, and the more elaborate and ritualistic it was,the more sensual and exciting.Enter Leonard Burtman, scientist and keen amateur photographer, who was instrumental in the discovery of the 'photo-strobe'.Unluckily he had been in the Californian desert during A-bomb tests in the mid 40's and his proximity to the radio-active fallout had left him sterile.Disillusioned,he signed off the Government payroll, channelling all his energy into photography and publishing. Thus his digest format photo-magazine Exotique was born out of his publishing company. Issue One appeared in 1951,and already the blueprint was in place.Exotique was a brilliant combination of science, art, eccentricity and uninhibited lust.Only a few photographers working within the field of the pin-up were really bringing the, more fetishistic elements to the foreground. Irving Klaw, his sister Paula, and Bunny Yeager were the pioneers of bondage and fantasy sequences that were often collected in book form a la Exotique. Klaws photography of Betty Page created the first official pin-up of the bondage scene, along with Betty's numerous willing collaborators in leather, rope and hand- cuffs. The consumers of these pin-up books were constantly requesting 'damsels in distress' shots, they wanted to see models posing as captives, vulnerable, bound and gagged and abandoned, blindfolded and left in painful or contorted physical positions. Fetishism was developing, and no longer hidden under the floorboards. Exotique,"the digest of of the bizarre and unusual",along with other underground magazines was distributed on a small-scale,but like a fire it spread into Times Square and from there to other outlets along the East Coast.Exotique was Burtman's labour of love.He was committed to transforming his fetishes into an art form through photographs and text. The central vision of Exotique and Burtman's desires was of the imposing dominatrix, standing tall in razor-sharp stilettos, garters, stockings,a ludicrously tight corset, and long leather gloves. The complete reprint,in full,of the first 36 issues. Vol 1,issues 1-11.Suspenders,stilettos,some famous faces like Betty Page and Brandee Kase plus strip cartoons, suspenders galore, the highest heels ever, the tightest corsets are all here in the first book. Vol 2,issues 12-24,continues in the same vein of leather with more high heels, boots, gloves, corsets and photographs, cartoons and drawings of dominatrices in their satin and rubber outfits. Vol 3,issues 25-36 completes the set of three. Each volume measures 5" x 8.50" x 2" thick. The boxed set measures 5.50" x 5.50" x 5.50".FOR ADULTS ONLY. UK,12mo p/back,1st edn thus. [Complete and unabridged.Re-published in Britain for the first time since the original edtion appeared in 1900.] VG++.No owner inscrptn and no price removal (2/6) to front cover.Bright, crisp, clean and generally sharp-cornered,glossy,colour pictorial artwork (in the style of 'bodice-rippers'/'pulps') illustrated front cover with red, black and yellow lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks, tears or loss present - and no reading creases to spine/backstrip.Sporadic,but miniscule rubbing with reciprocal loss to vertical edges of spine/backstrip and head+foot of same.Top+fore-edges toned/aged but clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound with inevitable page-edge toning - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo wraps, p/back,1st edn thus,12-222pp [paginated] includes XXII (22) chapters; plus [unpaginted] a critic's review, title page,a dedication,a prefatory note to the original edition,a contents list/table,and to the rear - as last page - publisher's advert for 3 other titles. A highly collected and prolific author, and an unusual item/ephemera and will be an important and welcome addition to the 'Churchilliana' canon. Although being the third of Churchill's works to be published,'Savrola' was actually the first that he started writing,in the summer of 1897, when he was a 23-year-old officer in the 4th Hussars in India, and the ONLY work of fiction he had published.A significant curiosity among his works - and is therefore unique among his other works, which are generally memoirs and histories.['Savrola' was originally and first published as a serial in Macmillan's Magazine, and Churchill later resolved to put it out in in complete form.] However, since both 'The Story of the Malakand Field Force' and 'The River War' dealt with far more topical subjects they took priority on the schedule, and 'Savrola' was not published until the end of 1899.Churchill's writing reputation was far better served by the accounts of the campaigns he had served in.[The book's dedication is in fact to: 'THE OFFICERS OF THE IVth (QUEENS OWN) HUSSARS IN WHOSE COMPANY THE AUTHOR LIVED FOR FOUR HAPPY YEARS.'] Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Churchill poured his maturing political philosophy into the character of his hero Savrola. It has been been argued that this lifts the novel from the 'Ruritanian romance' genre and makes it one of Churchill's most significant literary efforts. A fast-paced thriller of political intrigue against a background of a revolution published a few years before the end of Queen Victoria's reign, when Great Britain ruled a worldwide empire,it subtlety reveals the political awareness and personal views of a young Churchill, decades before he would become one of the most important figures of the twentieth century. 'Savrola' shows that it is possible to obtain penetrating insights into an author's mind from their fiction as well as from their biography. The story concerns the events leading up to,during and after a revolution in the fictional European country of Laurania. Winston S. Churchill (1874-1965) was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940-1945 and again from 1951-1955.Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century,Churchill was also an officer in the British Army,a historian,a writer, and an artist. He is the only British Prime Minister in history to have received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was also the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States. Christopher Ciccone's extraordinary memoir is based on his forty-seven years of growing up with, working with and understanding the most famous woman of our time who has intrigued, scandalized and entertained millions for half a century. Through most of the iconic star's kaleidoscopic career,Christopher played an important role in her life: as her back-up dancer, her personal assistant, her dresser, her decorator, her art director, her tour director. If you think you knew everything there is to know about Madonna, your are wrong.Only Christopher can tell the full-scale, riveting untold story behind Madonna's carefully constructed mythology, and the real woman behind the glittering facade. From their shared Michigan childhood, which Madonna transcended, then whisked Christopher to Manhattan with her in the early eighties, where he slept on her roach-infested floor and danced with her in clubs all over town - Christopher was with her every step of the way, experiencing her first-hand in all her incarnations. The spoiled daddy's girl, the punk drummer, the raunchy Boy Toy,Material Girl,Mrs. Sean Penn,Warren Beatty's glamorous Hollywood paramour, loving mother,Mrs.Guy Ritchie,English grande dame - Christopher witnessed and understood all of them,as his own life was inexorably entwined with that of his chameleon sister. He tangled with a cast of characters from artist Jean-Michel Basquiat,to Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Moss,Demi Moore and,of course,Guy Ritchie, whose advent in Madonna's life splintered the loving relationship Christopher once had with her. The mirror image of his legendary sister, with his acid Ciccone tongue,Christopher pulls no punches as he tells his astonishing story. 'Life with My Sister Madonna' is the juicy, can't-put-it-down story you've always wanted to hear,as told by Madonna's younger brother. Here is a complete visual guide to all the major types of paddle steamers which sailed from British and Irish ports and inland waterways in the years before the First World War.Not only is it a visual account,it is also a factual one backed by detailed introductions to each of the 8 chapters and by scholarly annotations to the 122 illustrations from Victorian and Edwardian photographs. The earliest application of steam power to ships resulted in the construction of tugs,so it is natural that the first chapter should be on this theme. In succeeding sections Richard Clammer deals with River and Lake Steamers,Ferries, Ocean-going Paddle Steamers,Warships,Royal Yachts,Cross-Channel Paddle Steamers, and Pleasure Steamers. Finally,an extended bibliography suggests the sources for further information. Two facts indicate something of the book's quality. The first is that only a tiny proportion of the photographs has previously been published: in this respect the work is a truly original one.The second is implied by a note of Acknowledgement in which the author records his thanks to the 50 and more firms, institutions and individuals who have answered his enquiries and who have given the book its undoubted authority. But when Kay Lansing, now a librarian in Englewood, asks Peter's permission to hold a literary benefit cocktail party on his estate.    She comes to see Peter as misunderstood and when he begins to court her,she falls in love - and marries him. However, she soon makes a discovery that leads her to question her husband's innocence. Two years later,on his deathbed,he makes her swear to never tell to anyone so that their son, Jack, will not carry the stigma of her past.      Two years later,Celia is happily re-married.But her peace of mind is shattered when her new husband,Alex Nolan, surprises her with a gift - the house where she killed her mother. On the day they move in,they find the words LITTLE LIZZIE'S PLACE - BEWARE painted on the lawn, splotches of red paint all over the house, and a skull and crossbones carved into the door.                 More and more, there are signs that someone in the community knows Celia's true identity. When Georgette Grove, the real estate agent who sold the house to Alex,is brutally murdered and Celia is the first on the crime scene, she becomes a suspect.                                          As Celia fights to prove her innocence, she is not aware that she and her son,Jack, are now the targets of a killer. In the belief that the fables attributed to Aesop are more entertaining and enjoyable to children without the morals so often accompanying them,Margaret Clark has compliled a delightful collection of 27 of these tales. All are told informally but in a direct fashion, highlighting the personalities of each animal or human character. The stories are brief - rarely more than one page long - and set in surprisingly readable italics appropriate to the casual tone of the fables. Beautifully displayed with and within the text, are Charlotte Voake's accomplished illustrations. Dominated by sepia tones, these watercolor washes with fine ink details capture the distinct mood and wit of each fable. At times reminiscent of 18th-century fashions and furnishings, each of these pictures is essential to the overall visual effect. With a plethora of such collections available, there may seem little need for one more. But this fresh and very contemporary interpretation of Aesop's wisdom will make readers realise why the fables have endured. More suitable for independent reading or sharing one-on-one,this collection reflects age-old stories that every child can understand and enjoy. Margaret Clark was the director of children's publishing at The Bodley Head for sixteen years until her retirement at the end of 1988. Charlotte Voake was born in Wales and brought up in Chepstow and Wirral. Her first book was published while she was still a History of Art student at London University and, despite her lack of formal art training, she quickly became recognized as one of the most outstanding contemporary children's book illustrators, with works such as 'Over The Moon','First Things First' and 'Mrs Goose's Baby.' Just before the year 1000 a young Viking named Thorvald the Far-farer turned his back on the pagan gods of his fathers to preach the Christian gospel. But his Icelandic countrymen mocked him as a homosexual, stoned him and finally outlawed him. Abandoning his homeland,Thorvald embarked on an epic journey to the golden heart of all medieval world maps - Jerusalem.A thousand years later,in the year 2000, Victoria Clark embarked on the same journey to discover to what extent the dramatic changes and conflicts sweeping western Europe a thousand years ago still resonate today.'The Far-Farers' is both the story of this 21stC journey and a history of extraordinary 11thC western Christendom. In this remarkable book she gathers a group of influential 11thC characters.Viking Thorvald, emperors of East and West Christendom, abbots, saints, princesses,a robber Norman and Crusaders are personally or professionally connected to one another to form links in a historical chain extending down the century and all the way from Iceland to the Holy Land.Western Europe was struggling to unite in the 11th century, expanding rapidly and changing utterly. Warfare, peacekeeping, multinational monasticism, institutional power struggles, mass pilgrim travel, and rising religious fundamentalism, were a few of its salient characteristics. In short,it was a world more like our own than we might imagine. The twenty-first-century people she encounters as she travels through Iceland, central and western Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and the Middle East cast fresh light on both worlds.A Swedish violinist she meets on a Turkish train reclaims the religion of his pagan Viking ancestors. In the ancient capital of Poland,a young Catholic priest scorns the idea of Europe uniting in the name of human rights instead of Christ.A Greek Jewess in Thessaloniki makes her peace with a thousand years of her people's persecution. At the Crusader stronghold of Krac des Chevaliers a Syrian playboy highlights the deep and widening gulf between the West and Islam.A richly evocative and beautifully written work, 'The Far-Farers' is neither conventional history nor travel, but a powerful and authoritative demonstration of our enduring connection with the distant past. Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, original red cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers. One of author's 20+ Masters and Green detective series. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a slightly higher grading.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for overall brightness and cleanliness. Almost simultaneously in four widely separated parts of Britain there are outbreaks of a rare form of food poisoning called botulism. In each outbreak the source is traced to an infected tin of meat. And each tin was bought in one of the supermarkets of the same national chain. The Home Office suppresses news of the outbreaks in order to prevent widespread panic, but it calls in Scotland Yard, and once again we meet Douglas Clark's well-known and very popular team,Chief Superintendent Masters and Chief Inspector Green. But why ther Yard? Surely it's the job of local health authorities to trace and contain an outbreak of food poisoning? Normally, yes; but the facts here are very abnormal. They indicate conclusively that someone injected the tins with bacteria. Who could have done something so diabolical? And why? While victims are dying, and officials, scientists and police are working frantically on all kinds of leads,Masters plays one of his famous and fantastic hunches - his longest shot. And it comes off. This is the gravest case in Mater's career, the one with most lives at stake: innocent lives, being struck down at random. He and his team rise magnificently to the challenge,in an investigation that is technically absorbing and packed with suspense. Douglas Clark (1919-1993) was born in Lincolnshire. He served in the Royal Horse Artillery in the 7th Armoured Division.Later he served in Amphibious Warfare until,on leaving the army in 1962,he joined the staff of a pharmaceutical company. He wrote some 27 crime novels, between 1969-90,chronicling the criminal investigations of the team of Superintendent George Masters and Inspector Bill Green. The series having been out-of-print now for over a quarter-century,and copies are becoming more and more hard to find,at least in good condition. In the UK most of the Clark mysteries were published in hardback by Victor Gollancz, whilst in the US,most of the books were published in paperback in the 1980s,as part of Harper & Row's Perennial series of vintage mysteries. Want more Arthur C CLARKE titles? For similar and other titles, please search my MODERN FIRSTS, MODERN FIRSTS2 and 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die catalogues. A novel by Arthur C. Clarke based on the screenplay by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick [derived from A.C Clarke's 1951 short story 'The Sentinel'],both of whom have contributed the foreword. 'The Sentinel' had appeared in '10 Story Fantasy' in 1951 as 'Sentinel of Eternity'. A simple, oddly haunting story, it tells of the discovery of an Alien artefact, created by an advanced race millions of years earlier, standing enigmatically on top of a mountain on the Moon. This was to become the basis of perhaps the most famous of all sci-fi films many years later: 2001 - a space odyssey, for which ACC wrote the script with Stanley Kubrick. The novelisation, was written by ACC alone,on the basis of the script; the film had already been made. The magnificent climax leaves the reader in little doubt as to why it is considered one of the best novels of its type, and it shows why it has claimed such a central place in our imaginings of the future. In the year that the computer Hal was created,Arthur C. Clarke brings the Odyssey to the conclusion millions have been awaiting. Now the final episode in the greatest story ever written of humanity's destiny in space. With '3001: The Final Odyssey' we experience once more the uncanny influence of the Monoliths and the limitless power of an alien technology. Frank Poole was last seen alive in the vicinity of the United States Spaceship Discovery en route to Jupiter's moons. The year was A.D. 2001 and the Series 9000 HAL computer on board Discovery had malfunctioned.Frank was Hal's first victim.Grappling frantically with the broken air hose of his spacesuit,Frank died in the blackness and vacuum of space. In A.D. 3001 his perfectly preserved body is retrieved by Captain Dimitri Chandler of the spacetug Goliath; medical and electro-optical technologies restore his life and then enhance it with a Braincap. Thus Frank becomes a telepathic,machine-assisted inhabitant of the first years of the fourth millennium, with a lot to learn. The alien Monoliths have been silent since the eruption of Jupiter into a sun in A.D. 2010.Their last message was a warning: ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDINGS THERE.But Frank Poole is an exception to the alien's interdict. Or so he hopes.Frank has unfinished business on Europa. And perhaps Dave Bowman, his long-lost colleague from the Discovery,is there,a thousand years older but not dead. And alien. Forever exploring the vastness of space and the mystery of life,Arthur Clarke has himself become the Odysseus of the space age.His imagination is the most celebrated in the world, yet he has written,'The universe is such a strange and wonderful place that reality will always out-reach the wildest imagination.' How does a quiet, shy kid, from an unassuming background, grow up yearning for the sea and end up a submariner in some of the most perilous times the waters of the earth have ever known? How does that happen? Maybe it was the droning beat of German bombers and the blazing rattle of anti- aircraft guns that shaped a young boy's mind as he sought refuge under a table during World War II.Maybe it was an imagination fired up as a son heard tales of dad's survival after twice being sunk by U-boat and twelve days adrift in a lifeboat.Maybe it was a lust for escape from an empty purse,salt-cleaned teeth, free school dinners, shared beds and third hand clothes and the prospect of a lifetime of boredom working at the motor factory.Maybe it was the exploits and escapades of sea captains and eccentric explorers, dreamed of in books, which ignited a passion for maritime adventure. Maybe. But that 'shy kid' counted the days and hours 'til he was the regulation 15 years and 3 months that would allow him entry to the Royal Navy. That 'shy kid' waited and longed and dreamed of adventure and 'If You Can't Take a Joke . . .' is a captivating and informative telling of his life and times in the 'Silent Service'. Hear an inside and underside account of life on and beneath the waves.Hear tales of icy encounters, often with our own ships,in the depths of the Cold War.Listen as a submariner regales you with stories of his time spent in the oceans and the bars - the underbelly of the world.
