'Unbound' is a new kind of publishing house. The books are funded directly by readers. The concept was a very popular idea during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.'Unbound' have revived it for the internet age, allowing authors to write the books they really want to write and readers to support the writing they would most like to see published - hence the subscribers' list/ index.] FINE+/FINE.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price.Bright,crisp,clean,part-matt and part-glossy laminated, colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj with b/w lettering; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original plain black cloth bds with bright, crisp, blocked silver gilt letters to front board and spine/backstrip,a black headband and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,special limited,1st edn,xi-xivpp+1-205pp [paginated] includes author's introduction,32 investigations,an index,a Connectoscope index, grateful thanks,a subscribers list; plus [unpaginated] note on author with author's other works advert to verso, critics' review,half-title+title pages,a dedication, investigations list/table etc.,2pp blanks between last page of investigation and the index, and a note on typefaces as the last page. An uncommon edition as paperbacks abound and the only other noted (UK) HB edition is the Random House edn. Everything is connected. There is a connection between Buffalo Bill and Les Miserables.Chess has a connection with H. G. Wells's martians . . . if you know where to look. The trainers on your feet can be connected to the Greek goddess of victory, who is connected to an ingredient used in making Absinthe, which is connected to the voice of Dangermouse's assistant Penfold, who is . . . Everything really is connected. In this book,ex-London bobby and QI elf Stevyn Colgan takes you on a series of circular journeys through a world of connections embracing science, art, history and popular culture. You'll learn why dipsticks upset the Nazis, how to turn Superman gay,why it would be easy to catch a bank robbing koala, and how a brand of foot powder came to be voted mayor of a village in Ecuador. Constable Colgan's Connectoscope offers you an entertaining glimpse into the hidden links between all things and challenges you to find new connections of your own. The book contains a mountweazel - which is a copyright trap; a deliberately false fact, name or word that an author inserts into a work so that they can track plaigiarism. If spotted, let the author know, but don't let the world know - it'll be yours and his dirty little secret. This edition is now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's.  William Kimber himself, worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation, war memoirs, autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty. The company was bought by Thorsons in 1988,and therefore ceased publishing under that name. William Kimber was purchased by Thorsons in 1988 and therefore ceased publishing under that name. Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990,and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that, making all previously published titles by them,out-of-print,under that name.  Submarine coxswain Ben Grant has a medal for his exploits in Norwegian waters earlier in the war,but this does not help him face operations in a far different theatre - the Mediterranean - or endear him to his colleagues.Strained and nerve-racked,he joins the submarine Avon en route to Torbruk in the summer of 1942.But at Malta events come to a head and he is asked to volunteer for Special Submarine Operations,a secret subversive unit. The target is occupied Greece, the mission dangerous - and the only flaw in the plan is his former skipper,Half-Shackle. In this new Ben Grant saga,Eric Collenette gives another story from the war at sea and in his taut, straightforward prose he vividly recreates those tense days of submarine warfare. This is the 2nd Ben Grant novel, the 1st being 'Ninety Feet to the Sun'. For six crucial weeks in the summer of 1940,the eyes of the world were on London and southeastern England. There the fate of Britain hung in the balance as a few hundred RAF pilots and aircraft (many of the planes obsolete) struggled against staggering odds, against fear, fatigue and desperation,to turn the tide of war against Germany. It was that battle in the skies, the Battle of Britain, that moved Winston Churchill to say, "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few." On August 13 - Eagle Day - the Luftwaffe began an all-out assault aimed at annihilating the RAF and preparing the way for Nazi Germany's invasion of England.A month later, on September 15,Nazis planes attacked in their greatest strength and numbers but were met with resistance so fierce it has now become legendary. The weeks encompassed by those two days are the theme of Collier's vivid and suspenseful narrative. Piecing together hundreds of individual recollections, Collier brings alive the courage and intense drama that marked the battle. Here are the experiences of such men and women as Pilot Officer Geoffrey Page, who bailed out of a blazing plane and suffered severe burns; Red Tobin, the American pilot who blacked out over the sea and came to with only 1,000 feet to spare;the ground crews and women's auxiliaries at air bases like Biggin Hill and Manston, who endured some of the worst bombing; Air Chief Marshal Dowding, who faced awesome responsibilities;Londoners and farmers; and the German pilots whose skill and determination sometimes ended in disaster. To write this definitive story of the most fateful weeks of the Battle of Britain, Collier employed a staff of thirteen researchers. They travelled some 30,000 miles in England,America and on the Continent, and put together over 400 eyewitness accounts of what happened in those few weeks. The story is told from both the British and German points of view. Many of the participants describe events in their own words. On its first publication, the London Daily Mirror said of 'Eagle Day' "For sheer excitement it leaves most thrillers on the tarmac." This new edition is enriched with over 100 dramatic photographs of the epic conflict. History will long remember the Edisons, Einsteins and Darwins: they succeeded in changing the world, and the world has repaid them by enshrining their names. But what of the others with similarly revolutionary and epoch-making ideas, who plummeted into oblivion - whether due to the fickleness of fate, unbelievably bad timing,a touch of madness, rotten luck,or some combination of them all? They are gone and forgotten . . . .until now. Paul Collins' highly entertaining and impeccably documented book offers portraits of famously forgotten men and women.Among them is the eccentric panorama painter John Banvard, the delusional physicist Rene Blandlot (who discovered the N-Ray),and the tragically overconfident Shakespeare forger William Henry Ireland. All leap from the ash heap of thankless obscurity as Collins brings them back to life.Written with sympathy, wit and intelligence, these unforgettable portraits of 13 forgotten people will amuse and astound you,and even change the way you look at history for good. Some villains are so dangerous they can only be dealt with by SO19,the Metropolitan Police Special Firearms Wing. Here Sergeant Steve Collins, who leads Black Team, the hardest and most renowned team within the unit, tells the inside story.Yardies, international drug barons, IRA enforcers and celebrity south London gangsters and hitmen have all been taken off the streets by the true-life heroes of the SO19 either in handcuffs or bodybags. . . . The book reveals how special forces are brought onto the streets of London to witness at first hand the highly developed 'rapid entry' and 'hostage rescue' techniques pioneered by SO19.'No one in the world is more highly trained than the SAS,' says Steve Collins.'But at the end of the day training is no substitute for the real thing. An SAS trooper may see action two or three times in his career. Our team gets into armed confrontations over two hundred times a year.' SO19's operations regularly make front-page headlines, but never before has their story been told. The tensions and camaraderie of a team who daily risk death has never been captured so vividly on the page. The characters include Fifty Fucks,a Superintendent renowned for his angry outbursts,Tony 'the Equalizer' who single-handedly shot three armed robbers,Big Len,powerful enough to punch his fist through a door,Mad Jack McDad,Madder than a Mad Thing, and Sinex,so called 'because when he gets up your nose he lasts for eight hours'.But the banter that takes place between members of the team shouldn't blind anyone to the fact they mean business. As a judge recently commented, the public should feel comforted to know of the awesome calibre of the gunfigters who daily defend them from evil. 'Welcome to the Piranha Club' Ron Dennis to Eddie Jordan. When Eddie Jordan attended his first meeting as a member of the elite organisation of Formula One team owners,he was greeted by the words 'Welcome to the Piranha Club' and a broad and ironic grin. If Jordan thought the message was a joke, he was soon to learn otherwise. In Grand Prix motor racing, life is lived in the fast lane in every sense.Only the fittest survive. It may be the most technologically advanced, most compelling, extravagant and glamorous sport on earth, but it also remains fairly Darwinian. This is the story of how this exclusive club - beset by arguments and intrigues, chicanery and controversy - continues to stay beyond the reach of the lawyers and command a television audience that leaves other sports green with envy. In 'The Piranha Club',Timothy Collins goes behind the scenes in the Formula One paddock and talks to the men at the heart of the business within the sport. He analyses the development of a unique television sports show which straddles news, gossip, industry and high finance, and profiles the characters who haunt its corridors of power. He strips away the glitz and greasepaint of the pit lane and paddock to introduce the reality of men like Bernie Ecclestone,Max Mosley,Frank Williams,Ron Dennis,Eddie Jordan and Flavio Briatore. It is a tale of danger and risk-taking,of plots and arguments and, above all,of a resounding level of ambition and energy that reveals how colourful and thrilling are the lives of Formula One's major movers and shakers. The dictionary tells us a piranha is a predatory South American fresh-water fish, noted for its voracity. 'The Piranha Club' explains why Jordan was met with such an alarming greeting. Timothy Collins, sporadic author and prolific sports journalist,is motor racing correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and Formula One reporter for Reuters news agency. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too! Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 20+ year-old age. It is only the minimal exterior faults that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. Every fan thinks their team is different. Everyone who goes to watch football, knows deep down in their soul that there's something about their side which sets them apart from everyone else, something that makes them special. Some have better claims to this than others. Charlton Athletic fans might just have a better claim than anyone else. 'The Rise and Rise of Charlton Athletic: From Portakabins to Porto Captains' tells the tale of a decade many believed Charlton were never going to see.Having grabbed a late equalizer and scraped a draw with the official receiver, the 'Addicks' spent most of the late 1980s reeling from a string of financial body blows. Their recovery provides an almost unique story in modern football,as the club clawed its way back from the edge of the precipice,to a position of safety and prosperity. As dozens of other clubs face the prospect of going out of business,in a small corner of south east London stands a club who act as a blueprint for how to bounce back from defeats off as well as on the pitch. While writing 'The Rise and Rise of Charlton Athletic', Mick Collins was given unprecedented access to the club. He tlked to those who participated, those who just came along and watched and a few who managed both,in order to tell an extraordinary story,in equal parts funny, moving and inspirational. From the boot room to the boardroom,he looks back on the last ten years, and examines just what it is about this unprepossessing club, that allowed them to go where so many others have failed. LENNY BRUCE's words had the power to provoke laughter and debate - as well as shock and outrage. It was the force of his voice that would place him on the wrong side of the law in San Francisco, Los Angeles,Chicago and New York.Lenny committed his life to telling the truth. But the truth he told infuriated those in power, and authorities in the largest, most progressive cities in the country worked relentlessly to put him in jail.To them,Lenny's words were filthy, depraved. But to his fans - the hip,the discontented, the fringe - his words were not only sharp and hilarious, they were a light in the dark to the repressed society of the early 1960's. Lenny's battles were fought on stage and in the courtroom - against cops in San Francisco and L.A. who took notes at his performances, against judges in Chicago and against a prosecutor in New York with a zeal to bring the comedian down.Lenny also fought his addiction to heroin and,at times, his own lawyers. And there were those who never stopped fighting for Lenny - people like Steve Allen,Phil Spector and William Kunstler. To better understand the power of Lenny's performances, the authors have compiled an audio CD of the routines that got him in trouble,as well as interviews with his defenders and prosecutors, and his friends and followers, including George Carlin, Hugh Hefner and Margaret Cho. The first carefully documented account of Lenny Bruce's career and free speech struggles,'The Trials of Lenny Bruce' paints a vivid, shocking, hilarious and tragic portrait of a man too honest for his time. The one-hour CD,narrated by NAT HENTOFF (a friend, and witness for Lenny,in the New York trial) features Lenny Bruce performances (including ones for which he was busted),notorious routines, including "Religions,Inc.", "Blah Blah Blah", "Thank You Mask Man" and " Las Vegas Tits and Ass"; interviews with George Carlin,Hugh Hefner,Margaret Cho and others, excerpts from Lenny's never-before-released secret tapes of his New York obscenity trial. Like the original 'Faber Library' of the 1930s, 'typography, paper, binding and general format have been very carefully planned with a view to the appearance of the volumes on the bookshelf, no less than their convenience as travelling companions, comfortable to the reader's eye and hand.' 'Foreign Mud' was opium, smuggled into China in the early nineteenth century by British and other Western ships while their governments looked the other way.The merchants saw it as a fair trade, especially because China refused to open her markets to the world. To the Chinese court, however,it was an outrage: an affront to the dignity of the Celestial Empire by unruly foreign Barbarians. At a time when the British were determined to force their way into every market of the world, and the Chinese retained their centuries-old aloofness, war was inevitable. First published in 1946,Maurice Collis's elegant and colourful account of the Opium War is now regarded as a masterpiece. In writing that is intimate, lively, full of comedy and ironic contrasts,Collis gives a fascinating account of this strange and highly intricate trade, and of the miscomprehension (but also the strange similarities) between the two arrogant nations. Maurice Stewart Collis was born in 1889,the son of an Irish solicitor. He wrote over twenty books, including volumes of autobiography, biography, travel writing, novels, histories and three plays. He died in 1973. A much detailed and well-illustrated account of the British Royal Naval campaign in suppression of the East African slave-trade in the years of 1868-70,being published only eight years after the end of the United States' Civil War and the abolition of slavery there. Slavery was not outlawed in the Ottoman Empire (which at the time of 1873 included Egypt and what is now Iraq) until 1882,and in Iran and most of the Gulf States, not until the 20thC. Captain Philip J[ohn] H[oward] Colomb (1831-99),was Commander of the ship HMS Dryad from 1868-70 and led the campaign. Operating primarily in and around the Gulf,Oman and Zanzibar they managed to capture seven slavers,slave-ships during those two years of the patrols. Illustrations show HMS Dryad and some of the slave-ships,along with individual and group portraits of slaves encountered during the campaign, and views of ports where the slave trading occurred. One of the group portraits is an engraving after a photograph made by one of the Dryad's officers and other illustrations are after drawings by other ships' officers. The map showing the region, includes the Indian Ocean,Arabian Sea,Red Sea and the Gulf, including Madagascar and the other islands. The first chapter relates to Colomb's voyage to Aden, where he took command of the Dryad, and the next two chapters provide extensive background information to place the account of the campaign in context.Colomb's account of his own campaign includes chapters on individual regions of Bombay,Muscat and Oman, the Gulf,Madagascar and Zanzibar etc. and on various assorted topics (slaves on board, the slave market etc.Colomb was eventually promoted to Admiral after his retirement from active duty. On 9 July 1864,after an evening with relatives,Thomas Briggs walked through Fenchurch Station and entered carriage 69 on the 9.45 Hackney-bound train.Little did he know that he was travelling into history . . . A few minutes later, two bank clerks entered the compartment. As they sat down, one of them noticed blood pooled in the buttoned indentations of the cushions. Then he saw blood smeared all over the floor and windows of the carriage, and a bloody handprint on the door.Ladies in the adjacent carriage complained that their dresses had been stained by spurts of blood entering their window while the train was in motion. But there was no sign of Thomas Briggs. The only things left in the carriage were his ivory-knobbed walking stick, his empty leather bag - and a hat that, strangely, did not belong to Mr Briggs . . . So begins a breakneck-paced,fascinating Victorian true crime story - a story that obsessed the nation and changed rail travel for ever. With formidable narrative skill,Kate Colquhoun evokes the sights, sounds and smells of Victorian rail travel, and uncovers long-buried secrets from one of the most gripping murder investigations of that age. Kate Colquhoun's previous non-fiction titles were shortlisted for the Duff Cooper Prize 2004 and longlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize 2003.As well as writing for several newspapers and magazines, she appears regularly on national radio and television. In the 19thC,which witnessed a revolution in horticulture, urban planning and architecture,Joseph Paxton,a man with no formal education, strode like a colossus. Head gardener at Chatsworth by the age of twenty-three,and encouraged by the sixth Duke of Devonshire whose patronage soon flourished into the defining friendship of his life,Paxton set about transforming this Derbyshire estate into the greatest garden in England.Visitors there were astonished by the enormous glasshouses and ambitious waterworks he built, the collection of orchids, the largest in all England, the dwarf bananas and the gargantuan lily, the trees and plants brought back from all over the world.Queen Victoria came to marvel and, increasingly, with the development of the railway in which Paxton was involved, daytrippers from all over the country. It was the Crystal Palace, home of the Great Exhibition in 1851,that secured Paxton's fame. His design, initially doodled on a piece of blotting paper, was the architectural triumph of its time. Two thousand men worked for eight months to complete it.It was six times the size of St Paul's Cathedral, enclosed a space of eighteen acres, and entertained six million visitors.By the time of his death fourteen years later,'the busiest man in England' according to Dickens, was friends with Brunel and Stephenson and in constant demand to design public parks and gardens. One of his last, seemingly most eccentric projects was for a Great Boulevard under glass,a crystal arcade that would connect all the main railway termini in London. Drawing on thousands of Paxton's personal letters,Kate Colquhoun's remarkable biography is a compelling story of a man who typifies the Victorian ideal of self- improvement and a touching portrait of one of that era's great heroes. Long ago a little girl, now a granny, passed the spot in the woods where Tog the Ribber hung. His skeleton, dangling eerily among the branches, seemed to reach out after her and, even when she turned tail and hurtled, terrified through the undergrowth, she could feel the presence of Tog's ghost in hot pursuit. The author of this remarkable poem,Paul Coltman,is Gillian McClure's father. For over two years she worked on a series of illustrations to create visual images as powerful as the words. Each picture shows a new stage in the child's panic, only partly relieved when she crosses the water and frees herself from her pursuer. Each imaginatively detailed picture has a border that interprets the fear in terms of images. The whole book has a haunting quality that stays in the mind long after the last page has been turned. After six years in the Army during WW2 Paul Coltman taught in Yorkshire and Sussex until he retired in 1977.He has published three volumes of poetry.'Tog the Ribber' was one of four final choices of the Arvon Poetry Foundation Award judges,Charles Causley,Seamus Heaney,Ted Hughes and Philip Larkin. From his own recollections and unpublished diaries Churchill's Private Secretary and close confidant describes the Prime Minister's circle. An unusual item and will be an important and welcome addition to the Churchill canon. Much has been written about Winston Churchill; much less about his friends and colleagues. They influenced him little for he was always his own master but they served him well.In return he gave them what they cherished most: his confidence and affection. This book is an account of those with whom Churchill both worked and relaxed, written by his former Private Secretary who during the last twenty-five years of Churchill's life was one of his most intimate friends. The list includes such international figures as Roosevelt and de Gaulle; wartime leaders like Monty and Ismay; Churchill's own family; his colleagues from Beaverbrook to Eden and Macmillan; and also those less known figures who worked for him behind the scenes. Though not primarily a book about Churchill himself,in describing his associates it also provides an assessment from close personal observation of his qualities and defects as well as glimpses of him as a statesman,a strategist and a human being. Why it should be that some events are engraved upon the tablet of our island's history while others are virtually forgotten is not an easy question to answer.Certainly such names as Dunkirk and Arnhem will be recalled for as long as those of Blenheim and Waterloo, albeit for rather different reasons. But Kohima? Ask anyone what happened at Kohima, even someone with a reasonably high standard of education, and you are most unlikely to get a very exact answer.Yet it was this crucial battle, fought against the Japanese,in North Burma in April,May and June,1944 that Earl Mountbatten described as 'probably one of the greatest battles in history. . . in effect the Battle of Burma, naked unparalleled heroism, the British/Indian Thermopylae.' Even allowing for the fact that Mountbatten was at the time Supreme Commander in South-East Asia and was never slow to inflate his own ego, that is high praise indeed. Kohima, sadly, never became the byword for heroism which it might well have done had it been fought a few thousand miles to the west and,as John Colvin shows in this book, certainly deserved to become. Though the story of this epic battle has been told before,it is one that unquestionably merits re-examination,and Colvin's dramatic style, supported by a wealth of hitherto untapped sources, vividly recreates the horror and the drama of this crucial battle which was to prove the turning point of the Burma Campaign. A contemporary published and issued attempt to fill the need for a presentation of real, modern, scientific psychology so that it could be understood by the average American enlisted man during World War II.It was intended so that every soldier who reads it should understand and use more effectively those most complicated "instrumentalities of war," that is,his own human reactions. Many of the pre-eminent psychologists of the era contributed chapters. Written for the man in uniform - whether a private,a sailor,a shavetail,a captain or a lietenant general - who wants to know his own physical and mental limitations even better than some of the "military experts" claim to know the psychology of our enemies. The book includes though-provoking chapters on such subjects as fear, morale, camouflage, food, sex, mobs and panic, rumour, and psychological warfare,to name only a few.Almost every chapter describes some practical ideas which,if used by the fighting man, will increase his effectiveness against the enemy, improve his personal adjustment, and give him an even better chance to stay off the casualty lists than he already has. Seven other titles from this series include:'MODERN BATTLE.','AMERICANS VS. GERMANS.',GUERILLA WARFARE.','NEW SOLDIER'S HANDBOOK.','WHAT'S THAT PLANE?',and 'AIRCRAFT RECOGNITION.'. Charley Partana: sottocapo and enforcer of the largest Mafia family in the United States - the Prizzis. Irene Walker: beautiful ex-prostitute turned professional killer. Two brutal murderers, two ruthless powerseekers, who fall desperately and hopelessly in love. But their passionate affair is doomed to tragedy by the nature of their trade - and by the exacting demands of Prizzi honour. In his dramatic and moving new novel, Richard Condon, author of 'The Manchurian Candidate','Mile High' and 'Winter Kills', sets this powerful love affair against an intricate web of violence and intrigue. He vividly illustrates the extraordinary influence of the Mafia in every part of American commercial and political life, and conveys with subtlety the strange mixture of brutality and tenderness on which Mafia society is based - a society in which worship of money is more important than life itself. The malevolent immensity of the feuding families' interests, the depth of passion thatexists between Charley and Irene, and the tragic outcome of their love, makes 'Prizzi's Honour' truly a modern-day 'Romeo and Juliet'. In eight short years,English football has been completely transformed. In 1989,with clubs already banned from Europe, the Hillsborough disaster tragically exposed football's crumbling grounds,self-serving administration and callous neglect of its followers.Millions still loved the game, playing it or loyally supporting clubs, but they were treated as pariahs.Football was in disgrace. Who could imagine that now (1995)? Today, cleaned up and sitting down, football is the sport of the '90s,loudly hyped by a newly adoring media.Crowds sit down in slick new grounds, watching an exciting generation of millionaire players - Giggses,Fowlers, smilinh Alan Shearers - in the satellite-television-fuelled FA Carling Premiership. But football's change goes deeper than this.It has become big business.Since the Taylor report forced English clubs to spend £600 million rebuilding their grounds, and since SKY and the BBC put £1 billion into the game,a new breed of serious business men have taken over top football clubs, many making huge personal fortunes.Below, smaller clubs and the grass-roots are still struggling to survive. In 'The Football Business',David Conn xamines the changed game of football changed in the '90s and analyses the transformations of clubs such as Manchester United,Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and others into stock market moneymaking machines.Who are these new owners of clubs and why are they in football? What have the changes meant to supporters? Why,with football enjoying new phenomenal wealth, are some Nationwide League clubs facing financial ruin? How healthy are football's grass-roots? This book searches behind English football's hype to ask what has really happened, what has been gained and what has been lost,as football has ceased to be a game and become a business. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! She returned to the UK for the Normandy landings before returning to the Mediterranean to continue her active career. The destroyer flotilla leader, commanded by a succession of outstanding Captain D's,led the 14th Flotilla on numerous day and night actions - classic gun and torpedo attacks on the Italian battle fleet, ship to shore bombardments, submarine hunts, and as escorts of siege supply and invasion convoys. In spite of inadequate and rudimentary anti-aircraft armament, she defended both herself and units under her protection from very many air assaults.HMS Jervis was awarded thirteen battle honours,a position shared by just two other ships of the fleet, the cruiser Orion and Tribal class destroyer Nubian. This is the story of the ship as leader of the 7th and then the 14th Flotilla. G. G Connell, having interviewed many of her officers and men, records the achievements of the Jervis, where possible through first-person accounts. Her fighting career though second to none is surprisingly little known considering the fact that she delivered so many powerful blows to the Axis naval forces in the Mediterranean. This book concentrates on her years at the head of the 14th Flotilla and gives a vivid picture both of vital episodes in the war at sea and what it was like to live aboard a destroyer in wartime. HMS Jervis was a J-Class Destroyer ordered from Hawthorn Leslie at Newcastle on 25th March 1937 under the 1936 Build Programme and laid down on 26th June 1937. The ship was launched by The Hon. Hilda Maud St. Leger Jervis on 9th September 1938 as the first Royal Navy ship to carry the name which commemorates the name of Admiral Sir John Jervis,Earl St Vincent, victor of the Battle of Cape St Vincent 1797.            Fitted for use as a Flotilla Leader she had more cabin and office accommodation for use of the Flotilla staff. Her build was completed on 12th May 1939 when she became Leader of the 7th Destroyer Flotilla in the Home Fleet.Following a successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in November 19411 this ship was adopted by the civic community of Bath Somerset. Her magnificent record includes the fact that she suffered no casualties from enemy action despite being continuously in hazardous deployments. Only one other ship of the eight in this Class survived WW2.                                    Book is out of print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's. William Kimber was purchased by Thorsons in 1988 and therefore ceased publishing under that name.Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990, and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that, making all previously published titles by them,out-of-print,under that name.                                            Please contact seller, because of the lighter weight and the value of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! 'It's the first time I've done this. Other people have written about me - or for me - but this time it's just my own life in my own words'                     In his first full-length autobiography, comedy legend and national treasure Billy Connolly reveals the truth behind his windswept and interesting life.                              Born in a tenement flat in Glasgow in 1942, orphaned by the age of 4, and a survivor of appalling abuse at the hands of his own family, Billy's life is a remarkable story of success against all the odds. Billy found his escape first as an apprentice welder in the shipyards of the River Clyde. Later he became a folk musician - a 'rambling man' - with a genuine talent for playing the banjo. But it was his ability to spin stories, tell jokes and hold an audience in the palm of his hand that truly set him apart. As a young comedian Billy broke all the rules. He was fearless and outspoken - willing to call out hypocrisy wherever he saw it. But his stand-up was full of warmth, humility and silliness too. His startling, hairy 'glam-rock' stage appearance - wearing leotards, scissor suits and banana boots - only added to his appeal.         It was an appearance on Michael Parkinson's chat show in 1975 - and one outrageous story in particular - that catapulted Billy from cult hero to national star. TV shows, documentaries, international fame and award-winning Hollywood movies followed. Billy's pitch-perfect stand-up comedy kept coming too - for over 50 years, in fact - until a double diagnosis of cancer and Parkinson's Disease brought his remarkable live performances to an end.Since then he has continued making TV shows, creating extraordinary drawings. and writing. 'Windswept and Interesting' is Billy's story in his own words. It is joyfully funny - stuffed full of hard-earned wisdom as well as countless digressions on fishing, farting and the joys of dancing naked. It is an unforgettable,life-affirming story of a true comedy legend. 'I didn't know I was Windswept and Interesting until somebody told me.It was a friend who was startlingly exotic himself. He'd just come back from Kashmir and was all billowy shirt and Indian beads.I had long hair and a beard and was swishing around in electric blue flairs. He said: "Look at you - all windswept and interesting!" I just said: "Exactly!" After that,I simply had to maintain my reputation.'    Please contact seller, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!         ** N.B.
