No owner inscrptn but a neat, handwritten, black ink gift presentation inscrptn: 'Christmas 1988, Love Trisha XXX' to top edges of front free endpaper,AND author's black felt-tip ink handwritten signature - without dedication - to half-title page.Price-clipped dw/dj but with publisher's adhesive price sticker/label (£5.95) in situ beside the clip.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy,wrap-around red background with colour pictorial artwork by Quentin Blake, illustrated central panels with white lettering above+below each panel repeated to each cover; with negligible shelf-wear, bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Tiniest sliver of red colour paper loss at head of rear-facing fold/crease of spine/backstrip's gutter, white lettering and publisher's white colphon to foot of same; and some superficial writing indent impressions to front panel of dw/dj,some minor, faint, superficial scoring to rear panel - but all without penetration to boards beneath. There is light pushing to the base and head of the spine with a small bump to the upper corner of the front board.Top edges with minimal sporadic dust-flecking blemishes otherwise still white and bright,fore-edges brighter and cleaner; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - appears unread, other than my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean and unblemished, sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain pale blue cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and clean plain white endpapers - inscrptns excepted.UK,slim 8vo HB+ dw/dj,author SIGNED,early 2nd reprint,7-96pp [paginated] includes 15 chapters with profuse part, single and double paged b/w line illustrations by Quentin Blake; plus [unpaginated] author's handwritten signature - without dedication - to half-title page, thumbnail b/w line illustrated title page with a dedication to its reverse, contents list/table with a blank verso and a thumbnail b/w line illustration with no text to verso of the last page of the book. Described honestly and fairly, nowhere as affected as it reads or sounds. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable, and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a child's book.It is virtually only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall.Despite them,it really is a remarkable copy for its age, cleanliness and brightness. George had a miserable Grandma - a grousing old thing who wouldn't leave him alone. She was selfish and ugly, hated children and sometimes was so frightening that George suspected her of being a witch.'Don't forget my medicine,' she bullied. No,George would not forget Grandma's medicine. He had special plans for her 11 o'clock spoonful - the nasty devilish sort of plan hatched only in a Roald Dahl story. If the medicine George was concocting didn't actually cure Grandma,it would at least produce some interesting results. It contained everything he could find around the house - including shaving cream and a yellow liquid to cure cows with crumpled horns. It was a brew so full of wizardry, with a smell so bewitching, that George found himmself chanting strange words that came into his head out of nowhere. And what it did to Grandma must be seen in Quentin Blake's fabulous pictures to be believed - not to mention what happened in the farmyard. Some children may have thought that the Twits - the ghastly couple in Roald Dahl's last story illustrated by Quentin Blake - were about as horrible as people can get.But then they haven't yet met Grandma. Described hard but fairly and honestly - very minor faults, and still a presentable collecor's item. Although listed as the author's first novel,at his request and insistence to his publisher,it was preceded by his true first novel 'Sometime Never' [1948/US and 1949/UK].That title never sold well. The novel stars Uncle Oswald,a character from 'The Oswald Diaries' who previously, briefly appeared in 'The Visitor' describing an act of coitus between him and a female leper in the Sinai Desert, and another later reappearance in the story 'Bitch',two short stories also written by Roald Dahl (both of which were published in 'Switch Bitch'.) In his third appearance in this novel - racy tale of serial seduction, Uncle Oswald makes a fortune by stealing and selling the semen of famous men, among them are Freud, proust, Puccini, Shaw, Renoir, Pablo Picasso, James Joyce, and Alfonso XIII of Spain, not to mention just about every crowned head in Europe.Dahl's [first-ever] novel is the funniest romp in years. For Kitty, growing up at Hay House amongst bluebell woods and doting relations is heaven. But for her mother, the restless Marina,a silver-eyed beauty who paints and weeps with alacrity, this comfortable domesticity cannot provide the novelty and excitement she craves. Swami-ji,Marina's guru, sees her future in New York, and so the family is scooped up and relocated, leaving Kitty exiled in a colourless boarding school.Reprieve comes in the form of the guru's summons to the ashram; but then, just as Kitty is approaching enlightenment, they are off again, leaving for an England that is now fast and unfamiliar. This time no god,man or Martini can staunch Marina's hunger for a happiness that proves all too elusive. And Kitty, turning fifteen, must choose: whether to play dangerous games with the grown-ups or begin to put herself first. Witty, lyrical and heartbreaking,'Playing with the Grown-ups' is a modern coming-of-age story that confirms the arrival of a unique new talent.Author's 2nd novel, her first and debut 'The Man with the Dancing Eyes' was highly praised and acclaimed. Once inside,he encounters the extraordinary Minpins, who live in terror of the most awesome creature invented:the Red-Hot Smoke-Belching Gruncher! and it is Little Billy - with some very special help from the Minpins themselves - who comes up with a plan to defeat the dreaded monster, and finds himself proclaimed a hero! 'The Minpins' is told with all the darkly imaginative flair of the Master Storyteller, and Patrick Benson's vivid illustrations provide an inspired interpretation of Dahl's fantastical world.Roald Dahl had personally asked him to illustrate 'The Minpins' which turned out to be one of Dahl’s last ever books. The author's final work for children and was published posthumously.Dahl was a double winner of the Children's Book Award and Whitbread Children's Book Award. Benson, himself,is a winner of the prestigious Kurt Maschler Award, and this copy is a superb example of the collaboration between author and artist. Patrick Benson studied at the Chelsea Art School and St Martin's School of Art.He first entered the world of book illustration with William Mayne's 'Hob Stories' in 1984,for which he won the Mother Goose Award.Since then he has continued to illustrate other people's stories, as well as his own.He received world-wide accolades for his interpretation of Roald Dahl's final book,'The Minpins' (see my book ID's rja26467,rja32168,rja416912,rja1114923 for more of the same 1st edns),and the two J.R. Hartley 'Fly Fishing books (see book ID rja26597).His illustrations for 'The Willows in Winter' (see my book ID's rja1132,rja596116 and rja682917), and his new edition of 'The Wind in the Willows' also received outstanding praise. The Reverend Robert Lee,Vicar of Nibbleswicke and a charming and God-fearing man, caused utter confusion and often genuine consternation among his devout parishioners.Robert Lee had suffered from severe dyslexia as a boy and had successfully overcome his problems with the help of the Dyslexia Institute. Later in life, soon after arriving at Nibbleswicke,he suddenly developed a particular and unusual sort of dyslexia. Occasionally, and without his knowledge, the words he used turned themselves around and came out of his mouth backwards and quite the wrong way round. For example, trap became part and his own name became Eel. The outrage and embarrassment which resulted was considerable. Roald Dahl describes the awkwardness of the Vicar's situation on many occasions and explains the simple cure found in walking constantly walking backwards. Roald Dahl's own favourite illustrator,Blake illustrated several other books of the author's work, during the author's lifetime, and these illustrations bring considerable enchantment to this story. Quentin Blake, born 1932,Sidcup,Kent.Son of a civil servant.Educated at Chiselhurst,Sidcup Grammar School and Cambridge University. Attended life classes at Chelsea College of Art.Tutor in illustration at the Royal College of Art (1965-78) and Head of the Illustration Dept since 1978.He works in pen and ink and watercolour in a popular and unmistakable style, capturing essential character and movement with wit and gaiety in a few rapid strokes. He has illustrated many editions of the BBC Jackanory television programme. He was chosen as the first Children's Laureate in 1999. 'Mine own romantic town' Sir Walter Scott wrote of Edinburgh. This is another man's view of the history of his city, from early Celtic times to the present day: a conscious sttempt,he says - selective, even at times impressionistic - to stand back from a subject in which his heart and mind are deeply involved. Few places can be so rich in drama, anecdote and achievement. Edinburgh is a city of contrasts, rugged and elegant, spacious and confined, genteel and warmly human.A city that has seen much cruelty and brutality; that was famous as the Athens of the North, the centre of intellectual and scientific life in Britain; that was and is one of the greatest monuments to the Neo-classic age. Festival visitors may arrive in search of pageantry and entertainment.Few can leave without having been aware of the subtleties of Edinburgh's atmosphere. Edinburgh is what history has made it.The story of its past is the clue to the appeal of its present. Page (noted Peron scholar) introduction,4 chapters/ sections - including facsimile pages and chronology of Eva's life,12pp contemporary b/w photographs between pp64/5; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, and a contents list/table.Translated from the Spanish into English,by Laura Dail. In 1987,a small Argentine publishing house published a document that had recently been found in a government archive in Bueno Aires. The document was called 'Mi mensaje', or 'My Message', and appeared to be the long-lost deathbed manuscript of Eva Peron, referred to by her and mentioned in several biographies of her.Rumour had it that the document, which is ctirical of the Argentine church and military, had been suppressed for thirty years after her death by her husband,Argentine president Juan Peron.Like everything about Evita,'My Message' is shrouded in mystery and myth. Leading Peron scholars disagree about whether Evita wrote every word herself and about whether it is an accurate reflection of Eva's thinking at the time of her death. Her estate, however, insists that the work is not by Evita. In 'In My Own Words' offers readers a first-hand glimpse of the woman who left an indelible if controversial mark on Argentina.Eva Peron was the founder of the Argentine women's rights movement and a formidable force for social justice, but a friend to dictators and a fanatic on behalf of her husband's much-debated brand of politics. At the time of her death from uterine cancer in 1952 at the age of thirty-three,Evita was also considered the most powerful woman in the world.Available in the UK and Ireland for the first time, the controversial 'deathbed manuscript' attributed to Eva Peron. Christmas may be the season of goodwill, but judging from the stories in this book, it is also a time of considerable danger, when it is advisable to lock up valuables and beware of strangers.Christmas Eve in these stories is as likely to be disturbed by the arrival of a malevolent intruder as by the jolly figure of Santa Claus. Luckily, some of the most celebrated sleuths in English literature are on hand to help solve these Christmas crimes.Only Sherlock Holmes could discover the connection between a missing Christmas goose and a jewellery robbery; only Miss Marple could have solved a murder so clever as the one which baffled the police at the Keston Spa Hydro; only H.C. Bailey's Reggie Fortune could have uncovered the murderer who so brutally disrupted the Christmas party at the Children's Home.'Crime for Christmas' brings together Christmas stories by the very best crime and mystery writers of the last 150 years. There are contributions from Victorian writers such as Thomas Hardy and Arthur Conan Doyle, murder mysteries from Agatha Christie and H.C. Bailey, and more modern tales by Ellis Peters and H.R.F.Keating,two of the most popular authors writing in this genre today.Of particular note is a story by the celebrated Victorian author Wilkie Collins, which is reprinted here for the first time since it was published in 1852. The stories vary greatly in their age, setting and circumstances, but they all combine to make you wonder - who really is beneath the red suit and white stick-on beard? Ghosts, murders, bizarre disappearances and journeys back through time, every conceivable type of mystery can be found within the pages of 'Mystery for Christmas',but with one thing in common: they all take place during the short days and dark nights, the festivities and tensions of Christmas time.Writers have long been inspired by this season of peace and goodwill to tell tales of murder, mystery and the supernatural, and the stories in this collection range from work by classic 19thC writers such as Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy to popular contemporary writers like Muriel Spark and H.R.F. Keating. Several of the stories have been written especially for this volume.Mysteries can take many different forms - as the stories in this intriguing collection prove. There are seasonal crime mysteries: an apparently impossible murder at a family gathering; a homicidal Santa Claus, and a chilling case of mistaken identity in Victorian London. There are some atmospheric encounters with the supernatural; some nightmarish,as in the murdered husband who returns to confront his murderer; others less frightening than bewildering or even amusing. And as Christmas,a festival around which traditions abound, can also be a time at which the past seems particularly close, 'Mystery for Christmas' includes stories in which the past becomes indistinct from the present, and in one case threatens to take over the present.Other writers/ contributors include E. L. White, Marjorie Bowen, Margery Lawrence, Ronald Duncan, Derek Stanford, Ron Weighell, Maggie Ross, John Whitbourn et al.
