Margaret Thatcher is a 20thC icon. There is no denying her place in history as one of Britain's greatest peacetime Prime Ministers.Fifteen years after she left office, her figure still bestrides the political scene, both in Britain and around the world. Margaret Thatcher was elected to Parliament in 1959.Twenty years later she became Britain's first woman Prime Minister. She went on to convincingly win two further terms in office, making her one of Britain's longest-serving Conservative Prime ministers. She resigned in November 1990 and has seldom been out of the public eye since. 'Margaret Thatcher - A Tribute in Words and Pictures' brings together personal reminiscences and anecdotes from those who - whether political friends or opponents, observing her from the press gallery,or toiling to keep her flame alight in the constituencies - experienced close encounters with the Iron Lady. They include, among many others,Henry Kissinger, Helmut Kohl,Ronld Reagan,Geoffrey Howe, Cecil Parkinson,David Davis,Shimon Peres, Ruud Lubbers,Michael Howard,Norman Lamont, Michael Brunson,Peter Lilley and Matthew Parris. Amusing, revealing, sympathetic and occasionally antagonistic, these observations combine to give a unique portrait of the political and personal life of this formidable woman. The book also contains the most sumptuous collection of photographs of Margaret Thatcher ever seen, providing a unique perspective of her life and career. Margaret Hilda Thatcher (nee Roberts), Baroness Thatcher,LG,OM,PC,FRS.Born 13 October 1925 - died 8 April 2013,was a British Conservative Party politician who became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.She was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and is the only woman to have held the office.A Soviet journalist called her the 'Iron Lady',a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. And as Prime Minister, she implemented policies in a brand of politics that became to be known as 'Thatcherism'. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! So,please contact seller, because of the weight/value of this item for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!

To play in the Rugby World Cup,let alone win it,is the dream of every rugby player across the planet. Those lucky enough to have done so embody everything that is good about sport - athleticism, focused determination and a strict work ethic. Or maybe not, according to these tales. . . . Instead,we have the one about the England player on all fours, being ridden around a dance floor by a champion jockey. And the All Black who kidnapped a dog and stole a van after a big game. Plus the Irish forward who won AUS $90,000 in a casino days before a quarter-final. With razor-sharp wit,Lawrence Dallaglio takes the reader behind the scenes to see what happens on and off the pitch when the cameras are looking the other way. With the help of rugby greats such as Gavin Hastings,Jonathan Davies, Sean Fitzpatrick,Michael Lynaugh and Francois Pienaar, the stories chart the history of the tournament, from the old days of blood, sweat and beers to the professionalism and planning of the modern era. Funny, frank and fully loaded with quick fire banter, these are the best of the best rugby tales from legends of the international scene. Lawrence Dallaglio has been a Wasps player all his club career, signing in 1990 and becoming captain in 1995 for 12 years until his retirement in 2008. Based on more than ten years of research,Daneman's vivid and insightful work reveals the tru woman behind the myth. Daneman herself won a scholarship from her native Sydney to the Royal Ballet School. As a student there she danced at Covent Garden, before joing the Australian Ballet for its inaugural season.                                          She is the author of four novels: 'A Chance to Sit Down', 'The Groundling', Francie and the Boys', and 'The Favourite'.                      Please contact seller, because of the heavier weight of this item - 1.25Kg unpackaged, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!                                      N.B. His reward was an apprenticeship at Bill Shankly's famous Liverpool Football Club and,at the club,he scored in abundance at every level he had a chance to play at.The problem was that the squad was so damn strong Tommy was unable to get a chance in the first team.Loan moves to Swansea City (where the great John Charles wanted to show off his talent in Italy) and the Dallas Tornadoes (he played against such greats as Pelé,Bobby Moore and George Best) helped him to become one of the most prolific strikers in an era before the money men moved into the game.In fact,he never earned more than £500 a week! At Jack Charlton's Sheffield Wednesday he was a hit.He played at Newport County, alongside John Aldridge,as they marched into Europe. At Plymouth Argyle his goals propelled the team promotion and a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Tommy was a goal-machine wherever he went, and he was not afraid of controversy. Today,to many thousands of people,he is a cult hero. This is his story... Did You Know. .? The origins of Shirley's name? "Do you remember the Johnny Cash song: A Boy named Sue? The father calls his son Sue because he knows he won't be around to protect him as he grows up,and the lad has to learn to fight because he's constantly battling those who want to take the mickey out of his name? Well, that song described me down to a tee now I look to the past and think about it,and after a while I started to get very angry. The desire to defend myself became overwhelming and the bully's days were numbered because I hit back twice as hard." Daddy was a wrestling star in a previous life? Shirley was working at 14 in a Halifax woollen mill and had a stint in the Coldstream Guards before following his dad into the ring in the '50s - first as 'The Blond Adonis',then as 'Mr Universe'. Daddy made a Splash? Did you know Shirley played Rugby League for Bradford Northern, although he never made the first team? Or that he retired from wrestling to become a Blackpool lifeguard in the '60s. 'D' is for 'Daddy'? Tempted into a comeback by his wrestling-promoter brother Max,Shirley's wife Eunice made his first XXXXXXL leotard out of the couple's chintz sofa cushions - and decorated her handiwork with a large capital 'D'. . . Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Steam trains run with heritage rolling stock and is the longest established steam railway in the south-west, celebrating over 50 years in preservation.       The Dart Valley Railway Company Ltd was formed initially to purchase the trackbed and station sites of the Totnes to Ashburton line, which is now known as the South Devon Railway [SDR]. On 30 December 1972, the Paignton to Dartmouth line was also sold to the Dart Valley Railway Company Ltd by the Ministry of Transport. In 2010, the South Devon Railway Trust bought the freehold of the Totnes to Ashburton line from what was the Dart Valley Railway plc, on 8th February, 2010. After a major shareholder sold their holding in the plc in 2016,the company ceased to be a plc on 29th November,2018. Containing over two hundred photographs, many of which have never been published before, this is a comprehensive look at a time when the main lines of the former Great Western and Southern Railways served Devon.Between Plymouth and Exeter the two systems used different routes to circle Dartmoor, with the GWR serving South Devon and the SR serving East and North Devon. The GWR also pentrated North Devon.Today (then 1991) remnants of the SR are in use together with the GWR main line and that serving Paignton. Charles Robinson(1870-1937),born in Camden Town, son of wood engraver and magazine illustrator Thomas Robinson, and brother of W.Heath Robinson and T.Heath Robinson.Apprenticed to the lithographers, Waterlow and Son.Inadequate funds prevented him from studying at the Royal Academy Schools, where he obtained a place, but he was able to attend evening classes at the West London Art School and at Heatherley's School of Art.From 1892,he worked as a freelance illustrator, based on his father's studio in the Strand. He joined the very talented group of young artists then working for John Lane at The Bodley Head, and his b/w illustrated edition of R.L. Stevenson's 'A Child's Garden of Verses' (1895) had an immediate success: he subsequently illustrated well over 100 books mostly for children. He was basically a self-trained illustrator, and his work has freedom and originality linked with a real feeling for book design that makes it outstanding. His b/w illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane, and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity, greatly helped by the introduction of the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography.By incorporating lettering into the page design, and in his planning of the book as a whole,he developed the Arts and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art. In 1857 the native troops of the Bengal Army rose against their colonial masters. They were quickly joined by thousands of discontented civilians in what was to become the bloodiest insurrection in the history of the British Empire. No one was spared,as innocents on both sides became embroiled in a maelstrom of brutal murder and heroic resistance. Combining formidable storytelling powers with groundbreaking research,Saul David has written the definitive modern account of the Indian Mutiny. He brings to life an extraordinary cast of characters - from stalwart Lord Canning, the heroic Lawrence brothers and troubled William Hodson,to the ruthless Nana Sahib, the staggeringly brave Rani of Jhansi and the fair-weather King of Delhi - to narrate a tale at once heart-rendingly tragic and extraordinarily compelling. And what of its causes? Did the mutiny really stem from a dispute over rifle cartridges? To what extent was it pre-planned? What, for instance, was the significance of the chapattis that mysteriously began to appear across the subcontinent before the outbreak? David Saul provides new and convincing evidence that the true causes of the mutiny were much more complex, and disturbing, than previously assumed. 'The Indian Mutiny' is a masterful work of narrative history. With energy, insight and authority,it casts fresh light on this extraordinary episode and challenges long- standing assumptions. Not least,it upturns the accepted wisdom that a British victory was inevitable by showing just how close the rebels came to depriving Victoria and her subjects of the jewel in the imperial crown. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Natsef-Amun was a priest and scribe at Karnak in Ancient Egypt. He lived and worked in the reign of Ramesses XI,more than 3,000 years ago. When he died his body was mummified and buried in a manner befitting his rank.During excavations in the 19thC at Deir el Bahri, near Thebes, his coffin and mummy were found and transported to Europe. The mummy was eventually purchased by a Leeds banker who presented it to the Leeds Philosophical Society whose members carried out a scientific and medical examination in 1828.This was one of the first examinations of its kind, and found a body 'in an unusually perfect state of preservation' which had been mummified in the elaborate way described by Herodotus and other classical writers. The Leeds investigation naturally reflected the scientific limitations of the day,and when Dr Rosalie David and the members of the Manchester Mummy Research Project were given the opportunity to perform a new examination using all the new scientific techniques available, they welcomed the chance.Using radiology,CT-scans,endoscopy and histology, serology and dental studies, a modern autopsy was performed on Natsef-Amun more than 3,000 years after his death.Using virtually non-destructive techniques, the examination team has made fascinating discoveries not only about the death of Natsef-Amun (was he strangled?) but also about his life.We find that he was in his middle forties at the time of his death, somewhat tall for the period, with a wrinkled brow and the usual shaven head of a priest.Illustrated with dozens of fascinating photographs,'The Mummy's Tale' brings to life in extraordinary detail a man who was 'god's servant' in the temple at Karnak a thousand years before the birth of Christ. When the atom bomb fell on Hiroshima at the end of WW2 it closed, for one soldier at least, the age of Schweik - the era when the ordinary squaddie could, through a bit of earthy judgement and a lot of divine luck, bungle his wy through a war knowing there would always be loopholes caused by human error; and that the enemy would have its own ration of Schweiks, common men like himself caught up in forces beyond their making or control. Eric Davidson's first book,'On Yer Bike, Schweik!',assembled a collection of stories about such men for whom war 'like life, was all make-do and mend, try all and error'. Based on the letters sent home by a father to his family,as he served from Dunkirk through Alamein to Monte Cassino, the stories focus not on combat but on characters, bringing to life the humanity of inhuman situations and brilliantly evoking one man's experience of war. But the reluctant heroes of 'On Yer Bike, Schweik!' were men who had suddenly been drafted in to fight a war they knew little about and understood even less; men of all ages and walks of life.On the other hand, those who were called up to fight the latter stages of the conflict were a quite different breed: they had grown up with war,and knew why they were fighting. But that didn't stop them being Schweiks. 'V for Schweik' celebrates the role of these Schweil-successors in a splendid new selection of tales. Covering the period from D-Day to VE Day,these ten stories salute the spirit of the legendary Good Soldier with great energy anf humour; tales often taller than tall, but always honouring the Schweikness of their heroes. 'I was in danger of losing my career.I'd already lost my family.Close to the Edge is about how I managed to turn my life around.' We all know him as the young comic who struggled through the working men's clubs before winning New Faces and hitting the big time.We know him as Britain's most successful stand-up comedian. We know him as the host of The Generation Game and Big Break. But how well do we really know Jim Davidson? Despite his successful career,it hasn't all been smooth sailing for Jim.There have been some very tough times, especially over the last decade:a period which has seen him transformed from Jim Davidson,blue-mouthed and alcoholic stand-up comic,to Jim Davidson OBE,the face of BBC family entertainment,Chairman of the British Forces Foundation, and close friend to Prince Charles.'Where did it all go wrong,Jim' you might ask. As his brilliant new (then 2001) autobiography reveals for the first time, there is much more to the man than meets the eye. No TV comic is better known today than Jim Davidson; not only is his face instantly recognisable to millions but his distinctive voice has been heard making people laugh for many years on stage,in clubs and pubs and even in other countries. Another aspect of his more serious side is his love of angling, instilled into him by his father on many countryside holidays on the Norfolk Broads and in Kent when he was young. What may not be known to many of his TV fans is that Jim is widely accepted by anglers, especially carp anglers,as a successful big fish man.He is a member of the Carp Anglers' Association and his best carp, caught from a very 'difficult' club water in Kent weighed 21 lbs 10 ozs. To catch this fish,Jim forgot about his TV work and fished for five days and nights, camping by the waterside with a friend in a quest for his biggest fish ever, which he eventually succeeded in catching. His angling exploits have been reported widely in the 'Sun' newspaper, 'Angling Times','Angler's Mail',and the 'Carp Catcher' magazine. As you will see from this book,Jim has been so keen to get fishing that at times he has worn his fishing clothes on stage and has mixed his bait in his dressing room.Given Jim's love of fishing there is obviously some serious content in his first book, but it wouldn't be a Jim Davidson book without containing much Davidson humour on every page which the reader will not need to be an angler to appreciate.Indeed, the publishers have had to provide some censorship for some of the well known bawdy Davidson humour,or the book might not have been published at all! Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional and particularly internally,is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation, for a book of its 20+ year-old age.It is only the minor faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading overall. Despite them,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary example copy for its cleanliness and lack of detracting faults. As a boy in post-War England, legendary Kinks' singer/songwriter Ray Davies was fascinated by America - its movies and music, its culture of freedom, fed his imagination. Then,as part of the British Invasion, he toured the US with the Kinks during one of the most tumultuous eras in recent history - until the Kinks were banned from performing there from 1965-69. Many tours and trips later,he experienced a transformative event in New Orleans when he was shot during a botched robbery. From his quintessentially English perspective as songwriter for the Kinks,Davies in 'AMERICANA' explores his feelings - love, confusion, and fascination - toward the country that both inspires and frustrates him. With candour, humour and wit,he takes us on a very personal road trip through his life and storied career as a rock writer-performer,and reveals what music, fame and America really mean to him. Some of the most fascinating characters in recent pop culture make appearances, from the famous to the perhaps even-more-interesting behind-the-scenes players. The book also includes a photographic insert with many images from Davies's own collection. Iconic rock singer-songwriter Ray Davies inspired generations of musicians - from the Who, the Clash, and the Ramones to Black Sabbath - as lead singer and songwriter of the Kinks. The band's string of international hits include "You Really Got Me", "All Day and All of the Night", "Till the End of the Day", "Come Dancing", and of course,"Lola." In 1990,the Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Davies has also acted, directed, and produced shows for theatre and television. Since the Kinks disbanded he has embarked on a solo career and continues to tour and record. Davies was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004,and in 2012,his performance of the Kinks song "Waterloo Sunset" was a highlight of the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. On his most recent album,See My Friends (2011),he collaborated with such artists as Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, and Jon Bon Jovi.Davies was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2014,and his Kinks-themed stage musical,Sunny Afternoon, played in the West End in London and was crowned Best new musical at the Olivier Awards in April 2015.It also won Oliviers for Best actor and Best supporting actor in the musical category, and Ray Davies received a Special Outstanding Achievement Award for the Sunny Afternoon score. The Lake District has been attracting writers and artists for over 200 years.Beatrix Potter first came to the area when she was sixteen, spending a family holiday by the shores of Lake Windemere in 1882.Although she was born in London and spent most of her early life there, she immediately loved Lakeland with a deep- seated and enduring emotion. At the age of thirty, she wrote of the village Sawrey,'It is as nearly perfect a little place as I ever lived in,and such nice old-fashioned people in the village.' Seventeen years later,Sawrey was to become her permanent home, following her marriage to a local solicitor. As Beatrix Heelis, she devoted most of her time to farming, and few of her colleagues ever realised that Mrs Heelis, out in all weathers in an old mackintosh and clogs, was none other than Beatrix Potter, the famous author. Hunter Davies takes an affectionate look at the relationship between the beautiful Lakeland countryside and the very private woman who was inspired by it,painted it,farmed it and helped preserve it for future generations to enjoy. He describes the quiet rural life that so fulfilled her,the towns and villages she knew, the customs she encouraged and the shows she attended,as well as tracing the roots of her love for Cumbria from her solitary earlier years in London. He also looks at her passions in the light of today and how they are reflected in present Lakeland life.Hunter Davies speaks with the best authority - that of a fellow Lakeland enthusiast and writer. Cressida Pemberton-Pigott's breathtaking photographs also reflect her own delight in the Lake District. That indefinable, pervasive magic of Lakeland, with its soaring hills, quiet valleys, tranquil waters and soft English light, can receive no finer celebration than the words and pictures in this glorious book. It is a fitting tribute to both Beatrix Potter and the land she loved.
