Peter the Great seems to exemplify the completely autocratic ruler who, like certain Roman emperors, could in principle do exactly what he pleased with his inherited country.Yet he was subject to pressures of many kinds - social, political, economic, and even temperamental
- which helped to shape his attitudes and to direct his actions.Though Peter is often made out to resemble a brilliant comet in European history,Professor Anderson is able to show that many innovations in the governing of Russia had
begun before his time, and argues that Peter is best understood in the perspective of Russian history as a whole.
This is the first English-language biography of Peter by an author in command of the great abundance of Russian materials, and it provides a thorough investigation into the domestic affairs of the country as well as a personal portrait
of a highly gifted and enigmatic man.
Peter's contributions to Russia's development are analysed in detail: his determination to westernize the country,to furnish it with the means of self-defence,to liberalize its religious and educational institutions,to give it a voice in international affairs,to create a new capital city of remarkable splendour.
Professor Anderson also concentrates on another side of Peter's personality: the coarseness of his own behaviour, his frequent cruelty, his total lack of familial sentimentality. In assessing these two contradictory aspects of Peter the Great, the author shows his deep understanding of the problems which beset Russia at the dawn of the eighteenth century, and his unrivalled familiarity with the period.

This is the first biography of Henry Mayo Bateman, one of England's most famous and most original humorous artists.Born in 1887,Bateman created, from traditional roots, new and vivid ways of portraying the manners and mannerisms of the his age. From Edwardian times until the Second World War his cartoons characterized the preoccupations of contemporary society and eventually, with the creation of his famous 'Man Who . . .' series, passed into the folklore of the nation.
Stage by stage, rather than day by day,the book takes a fascinating look at the major areas of Bateman's life and work, relating one to the other as each evolved - with the success he knew as a cartoonist providing a moving counterpoint to the inner struggles of the man.His life was a mixture of great enthusiasm and deep depression,of huge success and bitter failure. His personality was complex; a shy and reticent man never quite at ease amongst the society he so vividly portrayed,he needed long periods of solitude and isolation. Many of his cartoons reflect his personal disquiet and have a far more particular meaning than is at first apparent: they offer not only a wonderful portrait of society in his time but also a remarkable insight into his own concerns and feelings.
The book is carefully illustrated with over two hundred cartoons in colour and black and white which are closely integrated with the text: some will be familiar, others are less well known and appear here for the first time. The author pays tribute to a unique and powerful talent and holds a revealing mirror up to the awkward and complex nature of the man who was H. M. Bateman.
The author's wife,Lucy,is the granddaughter of H.M. Bateman.He has
worked closely over a number of years with the artist's family to research this book which contains some previously unprinted drawings, paintings and writings from the family archive.

Described honestly and fairly - even as an ex-library book, with the ONE listed imperfection - it's still in an exceptional condition and state.
The British, notoriously averse to cold water, avoided their own sea-shores for many centuries. Then, the mid-eighteenth-century claim that seawater was good for one, especially if drunk or bathed in,took the fashionable and wealthy from inland spas to seaside watering places.
Royal patronage helped: The Prince Regent at Brighton, and George III at those south coast towns which could now proudly add 'Regis' after their names, spread the idea that the seaside was there to be enjoyed.
Later the paddle-steamer and the development of the railway encouraged the invasion of the hitherto genteel seaside resorts by hordes of day-trippers in search of amusement away from the industrial city surroundings.
With its carefully researched collection of contemporary prints, photographs, postcards & posters, this book takes the reader on a seaside excursion, tracing the many aspects of how the resorts of Victorian and Edwardian Britain blossomed into lively and wonderfully garish places packed with people intent on enjoyment.

Poems in Pamphlet appeared monthly,in identical format and each pamphlet is devoted to the work of a writer hitherto not published in book form in England. The Ditchling Press was originally St Dominic's Press founded in 1916,by Harry (Hilary) Douglas Clarke Pepler. It was set up in a disused stable in Ditchling, using a 100 year old Stanhope handpress,a folio Albion press and two founts of Caslon Old face type.Pepler favoured the earliest printing methods used in Europe, though his partner Cyril Costick introduced some more modern techniques later. As the use of a handpress was physically tiring and could become monotonous, there were seldom more than 500 copies of any book produced. The paper used for virtually all the publications was handmade, and was produced by the mill of Joseph Batchelor & Son Ltd.,at Little Chart,Kent. The St Dominic's Press published not only books, but also pamphlets, broadsheets, posters and miscellaneous items such as calendars and Christmas cards.A number of important artists and craftsmen worked for the press, most notably Eric Gill, David Jones, Desmond Chute, Philip Hargreen and Mary Dudley Short. In 1936 Pepler retired. His partner Cyril Costick, his son Mark and son-in-law Gerard Falkner took over.New machinery was purchased and the business was moved to Ditchling village and renamed The Ditchling Press.

When the starship Meteor crash-landed on a strange world orbiting a solitary sun in the vast darkness outside the galaxy, her crew of Earthmen had no idea of what to expect. The planet was Earthlike in gravity, air, animal and vegetable life - but what of the native races they glimpsed from a distance?
What kind of culture would evolve on a planet whose sky was dominated by the glow of an entire galaxy - and with no other stars save its own dim sun? What kind of gods would they worship?
The Earthmen had to find the astounding answers to these questions on a planet split by a world-wide war.

Why do men and women experience sex differently? Why do we sometimes feel guilty about sex? Why are we attracted (and attractive) to some people and not others?
These are the questions at the centre of Simon Andreae's highly entertaining and accessible study of human sexual desire.
Arguing that our sexuality is the result of three interlocking forces - evolution, culture and psychology - Andreae combines superb storytelling with the latest science to explore the processes through which we come to desire many partners or few,men or women, and sex which is wild or tame.He also explores the furthest reaches of sexual desire, the paraphilias, and investigates why we fall in - and out - of love.
Equally at home discussing the evolution of the clitoris, the flagellatory impulses of the Christian clergy, the science of the gay gene or the escapades of a mediaeval lovesick baron,Andreae digs to the root of our sex drive and comes up with some surprising answers.Eye-opening,intriguing and highly readable,'Anatomy of Desire' is a hugely compelling exploration of the human race's most deep-seated and fascinating drive.

After two years of frustration, first at Cardiff in 1989 and then at Murrayfield in 1990,Will Carling's England team finally achieved the Grand Slam against France at Twickenham on 16th March 1991.Although the French out-scored England by three tries to one, including one of the most memorable tries ever seen at Twickenham, the English victory was built on the power and discipline of the forwards, supported by dogged defence in the backs - with a try from Rory Underwood,a drop-goal by Rob Andrew and 14 points from the boot of Simon Hodgkinson.
From the beginning of the 1991 Five Nations Championship it was obvious that England were not to be denied again.
Although there were still some occasional signs of the open flowing rugby that had brought so many tries the previous season, there was also clearly an intention to capitalise on the strength and experience of a daunting pack to overwhelm the opposition.Wales fell to England at Cardiff for the first time since 1963.The Grand Slam defeat of 1990 at Murrayfield was avenged at Twickenham and the Calcutta Cup regained. The Irish playing with a new enthusiasm under Rob Saunders were only just overcome in the final quarter of the game to secure the Triple Crown in Dublin.
Finally Serge Blanco and his rampaging French team were held at bay in the rain and gloom of a glorious March afternoon, and England finally won the Five Nations Championship and the Grand Slam. This is a lavishly illustrated book by England's most-capped outside-half Rob Andrew and dean Richards a major force in the dominance of the England pack.England's Grand Slam 1991 commemorates a remarkable triumph and will be a welcome addition to the library of every rugby enthusiast.

The weather looked perfect when Jamie Andrew and his close friend Jamie Fisher set off to climb the formidable North Face of Les Droites in the French Alps in January 1999.
But a sudden ferocious storm hit them 10,000 feet up the mountain.
They were trapped on a narrow ridge in temperatures of -30 degrees C,battered by winds so strong the rescue helicopters could not reach them. After five nightmarish nights doggedly clinging to life,Jamie Andrew was finally rescued; but his friend Jamie Fisher had died beside him on the last night.
It was a miracle that Jamie Andrew lived; he now had to come to terms with not only the death of his friend - but also the loss of both his hands and feet. They all had to be amputated because of severe frostbite.
The book recounts Jamie's heroic struggle to overcome his disabilities; within three months of the accident,he had learnt to walk again on prosthetic legs, and started
the painful process of re-learning everyday tasks like washing, dressing and feeding himself.Since then,Jamie has not only run in the London Marathon, but, incredibly, taken up again the sport he lived for - mountaineering.
'Life and Limb' is an enthralling epic of survival and death in the mountains. It is also an inspiring and moving story of one man's unshakeable determination to overcome his disabilities, and lead the full and active life he loves.

Since her first appearance on screen in
'Mary Poppins',Julie Andrews has played a series of memorable roles that have endeared her to generations. But she has never told the story of her life before fame.Until now.
In 'Home: a Memoir of My Early Years',Julie takes her readers on a warm, moving and often humorous journey from a difficult upbringing in war-torn Britain to the brink of international stardom in America. Her memoir begins in 1935, when Julie was born to an aspiring vaudevillian
mother and a teacher father, and takes readers to 1962,when Walt Disney himself saw her on Broadway, and cast her as the world's most famous nanny.
Along the way,she weathered the London Blitz of WW2; her parents painful divorce; her mother's turbulent second marriage to Canadian tenor Ted Andrews and a childhood spent on radio,in music hall and giving concert performances all over England.
Julie's professional career began at the age of 12,and in 1948 she became the youngest solo performer ever to participate in a Royal Command Performance before the Queen. When only 18,she left home for the United States to make her Broadway debut in 'The Boyfriend',and thus
began her meteoric rise to stardom.
'Home' is filled with numerous anecdotes,
including stories of performing in 'My Fair Lady' with Rex Harrison on Broadway and in the West End and in 'Camelot' on Broadway with Richard Burton; and her first marriage to famed set and costume designer Tony Walton.'Home' culminates with the birth of their daughter Emma and the call from Hollywood and what lay beyond.
Featuring over fifty personal photographs, many never before seen, this is the personal memoir Julie Andrew's audiences have been waiting for.

Robert Hereward Britton, better known as
'Battler Britton' made his debut in
'Battler Britton,War Ace' (Thriller Comics Library No.160) in 1958.Within a year, his adventures were appearing in Thriller Picture Library (as it became known from issue number 163 onwards), and also found in the weekly Almagamated Press
story-paper,the 'Lion'.Many of the early
picture-strip stories were reprinted in Fleetway's Air Ace Picture Library in the 1960's, as were several new adventures, and they were reprinted yet again in a series of annual Battler Britton 'holiday specials' between 1978-82,with a further issue appearing in 1988.
'Battler Britton' rarely restricted his daring exploits to the air alone. In his time he had also served as a senior officer in the Peruvian Navy and a cavalry
commander in the French Foreign Legion, and such was his reputation that, following the outbreak of WWII,he was withdrawn from regular flying duties in order to undertake special tasks requiring
"skill and courage beyond the call of duty".
Such was the character's popularity that Fleetway issued 2 collectable annuals between 1960-61,each one containing a mixture of picture strip and text stories,
plus an assortment of 'Special Features' on aviation.A second collection of some of the war-time exploits of Wing-Commander
Robert Hereward Britton D.S.O.,D.F.C and Bar,Croix de Guerre. These annuals are uncommon and difficult to find with ease, particularly complete with dw/dj.

Visually the exterior appearance is spectacular for a book of it's age and nature, i.e a child's book, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. But for the attempted/completed puzzles would merit a MINT grading.
The Beano Annual is the current name of the book that has been previously published every year since 1939,to tie in with the children's British comic 'The Beano'.As of 2023 there have been 85 editions. These annuals were traditionally published in July or August,in time for Christmas market, and since 1965 (dated 1966) they have had the date of the following year on the cover, before then,no date was given.
From 1943-1950 the annual was called 'The Magic-Beano Book',which referred to the merging of the short-lived sister comic 'Magic Comic' that then ceased publication in 1941 due to WW2 and Britain's introduction of strict paper-rationing.Though with war's end and the later end of paper-rationing too,the comic was never revived. However, some of the characters who had originally appeared in the pre-war 'Magic Comic' managed to remain as regular strips in the post-1950 'Beano' comic (such as Koko the Pup). The name reverted to the original title of 'The Beano Book' in 1950 and continued, the year changing for each subsequent annual, until the release of the 2003 book (in 2002) when it was renamed 'The Beano Annual'.The 2011 Beano Annual is taller and wider than previous annuals.
Because of his popularity,Dennis the Menace has appeared on the front cover of every annual since the release of the 1979 annual in 1978. From 2009 (out in 2008) until 2020 (released 2019),the book consistently retailed at £7.99.

Thomas Blakeley Mackenzie (1887-1944). Born in Bradford,Yorkshire.Studied at Bradford College of Art and afterwards on a scholarship at the Slade School of Fine Art.Worked as a painter, etcher and wood engraver and, rather spasmodically,as an illustrator during the 1920s.He moved to France in 1929 in the hope of establishing himself there as a painter, but soon returned to England, and during the 1930s produced topographical etchings of Oxford and hand-made jewellery. He died in Cornwall.
The British Library catalogues Mackenzie as two separate artists: T.B. and Thomas Mackenzie, and this perhaps reflects the fact that,in illustration at least,he never developed a consistent style. His published work falls into three distinct groups: smoothly executed, naturalistic drypoints; full colour plates with echoes of,among others,Edmund Dulac, the Fauves, oriental art, mediaeval manuscripts and b/w illustrations (wood engravings, and pen and ink drawings) that were the most spontaneous among his productions.Despite his lack of consistency,or perhaps because of his continuing search for a personal language,he produced some interesting illustrative work.

An uncommonly high grade example of publisher's 27th Dennis the Menace annual.First cartoon strip 'SPLASH FOR CASH'.
Visually the exterior appearance is spectacular for a book of it's age and nature, i.e a child's book, and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.
'DENNIS the MENACE' is the original title of a children's British comic strip which first appeared in "The Beano" on March 12th,1951 (in the edition cover dated March 17th,1951); it is now published as Dennis the menace and Gnasher.
The first DENNIS THE MENACE annual was published by D. C. THOMSON,based in DUNDEE,in September 1955 as a tie-in for the British children's weekly comic. The annuals were traditionally published in the Autumn for the Christmas market and dated with the following year date.Published bi-annually until 1978,the first 5 annuals are without a cover date - the first annual with its date on,was the 1966 annual. From 1979-82 it then disappeared until 1983,before resuming its bi-annual publication from that date until and up to 1987.From then on,the words "from The Beano" were printed elsewhere on the cover, the same thing as 'The BASH STREET KIDS' annuals (see my book ID rja970721 for an example),had been doing for a few years earlier. From 1988 onwards,it was then an annual publication, and finally renamed the DENNIS the MENACE Annual in 2003.The books/annuals published in 1994,1995,1997 and 2007 to 2009 were all actually titled DENNIS THE MENACE & GNASHER,while the 2010-2011 annuals were simply titled DENNIS & GNASHER.
The annuals' name has had various suffixes since, including "and Gnasher" on the 1988,1989, 1994,1995,1997,2007,2008 and 2009 books, and "Book" on the 1991,1996,1999,2001 and 2002 editions. The annual permanently changed its name to Dennis the Menace Annual from the 2003 book, though the following year and "from The Beano" still appear. The 2010 edition was renamed the Dennis & Gnasher Annual to tie into the CBBC cartoon. It now says "as seen on CBBC" instead of "from The Beano".There was no annual published for 2012.
Two other books in the annual format starring Dennis the Menace have also been published, 'Dennis the Menace 1951-2001' (a collected edition published in late 2000 to celebrate Dennis's 50th anniversary in print) and Dennis & Gnasher Friends Cartoon Capers (also published in 2000).

Very scarce item and would be an important addition to any collection of WW1 Royal Navy ephemera.
Short daily diary entries made during the first World War.This is the diary of the ship,H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth. It was the first R.N. ship to carry the name, the first entirely fuel-oil powered ship in the Royal Navy and also the first to carry 15 inch guns. Its commanding officer was Commander C.M. Forbes and Captained by G. P. W. HOPE,R.N.
Launched on 16 October 1913 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, after being built in that Dockyard, and commissioned 22 December,1914.Whilst she was still undergoing testing, sea trials and workups in the Mediterranean, the ship was directed to the Dardanelles for the Allies intended attempt to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war.She was the only dreadnought battleship to participate, though a number of battlecruisers and pre-dreadnought battleships were also involved and present. The ship became the flagship for the preliminary naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign, leading the first line of British battleships in the battle of 18 March 1915.
During the attempted military invasion of the Gallipoli on 25 April,H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth was the flagship for General Sir Ian Hamilton, commander of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. After the sinking of H.M.S. Goliath by a Turkish destroyer on 12 May,H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth immediately withdrew to a safer position.
She joined Admiral Hugh Evan-Thomas's 5th Battle Squadron (consisting of Queen Elizabeth-class battleships) of the Grand Fleet based at Scapa Flow, but she missed the Battle of Jutland due to being in dock for maintenance. Her other wartime service generally consisted of routine patrols and training in the North Sea.
On May 31st,1916 the main British and German battle fleets engaged each other in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark. Remembered as ‘Jutland’ by the British and ‘Skagerrak’ by the Germans, this enormous battle involved 279 ships and was the largest naval engagement of the First World War.Both sides suffered heavy losses of ships and men and the result was one of the most keenly felt disappointments of the war, with neither side achieving a decisive victory.
In the terms of losses inflicted, the Germans had grounds for claiming a tactical victory. Fourteen British ships had been sunk and 26 damaged, compared to eleven sunk and 30 damaged on the German side.Total British casualties including captured survivors came to 6,945 compared to 3,058 German.
HMS Queen Elizabeth became the Grand Fleet Flagship on Admiral Sir David Beatty’s appointment as Admiral of the Fleet 1917 and saw the German High Seas Fleet internment at Scapa Flow at the end of the First World War,when the terms of surrender were given to Admiral Von Reuter on board.
Her battle honours: DARDANELLES,1915 - CRETE, 1941 - SABANG,1944 - BURMA 1944-45. H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth later served in several theatres during the Second World War,the Mediterranean Fleet, the Home Fleet, then the Eastern Fleet. Placed in reserve in August,1945,she was eventually paid off in June, and ultimately scrapped in July 1948.

Dudley Dexter Watkins (1907-69).Born Manchester, son of a lithographer.Brought up in Nottingham, and attended evening classes at Nottingham School of Art before entering as a full-time student on a scholarship (1924).
Subsequently worked as a cartoonist and illustrator for the newspaper and magazine publisher D.C. Thomson and Co.,Dundee (1925-69).
He was a lay preacher and drew calendars and cartoons in support of missionary work.He also taught life drawing and illustration at evening classes at Dundee School of Art.For D.C. Thomson he largely created and entirely drew such strip-cartoon classics as 'Oor Willie and the Broons' (The Sunday Post),Biffo the Bear and Lord Snooty and his Pals (The Beano),and Desperate Dan (The Dandy). He worked in b/w,offsetting fluent economical outlines with small areas of hatching and solid black (any wash work was done by Thomson): a style that reproduced admirably on newsprint.Beneath his simplification lay confident draughtsmanship,a capacity for effective frame compositions and an instinct for well-selected detail.
Since his death, his cartoon strips have been continued in a clumsy paraphrase of his style, but originals are still republished in the various Thomson comics and annuals.Though book illustration formed a minor part of his work,he is noted for his important contribution to a humorous graphic tradition that goes back to W.G. Baxter and Tom Browne.

His rarest book and widely considered as his last magnus opus, his change of style and mood away from natural history, moved him steadily into the realms of exotic fantasy and imagination. On the strength of 'The Arabian Nights' alone,Edward could have become one of the greatest illustrators of fantasy and fairy stories.
He took such great care and so much time to complete a set of colour plates for Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, with an overflowing schedule with artists, already having published Dulac,Heath Robinson and K.Nielsen in turn, for these same stories, Hodder could not use these charming illustrations, and they remain unpublished to this day.
The Detmold twins, worked as Maurice and Julius Detmold,1883-1908,and 1883-1957. Born in Putney,21st November,1883,being christened Charles Frederick and Edward Barton Detmold. The two middle names were soon dropped and replaced by 'Maurice' and 'Julius' respectively. The younger twin, Edward took his first names not from his father, but from the enigmatic Dr Edward Barton Shuldham, described as occupier of the house in Upper Richmond Road where the twins were born and were privately educated. They studied animal life in the Zoological Gardens and worked in close association, painting, drawing and etching bird and animal subjects. They collaborated on several books before Charles Maurice ended his life by inhaling chloroform in 1908.[The brothers were in April,1908, about to leave for a holiday in Sussex with Dr Shuldham, who had asked Maurice to put down the household cats with chloroform. Not an unusual practice at that time: as the cats would be replaced on the return from the holiday.) Edward Julius went on to become one of the most interesting of the gift book illustrators, specialising in animals and plants, which were drawn with exactitude and sympathy, and often placed in fantastic architectural or landscape settings. In its delicacy of outline and subtle colour harmonies, his work shows the influence of of oriental miniature painting. In the early 1920's he retired to Montgomeryshire, with his widowed sister, continuing to draw, paint, hold exhibitions of etchings and drypoints, but it wasn't long before he retired completely from public life, and eventually committed suicide himself,on 1st July 1957.Both brothers were elected ARE (1905),but resigned a few months later.
