This is he dramatic story of J. P. Donleavy's struggle to create and publish a book which became a 20th century masterpiece: 'The Ginger Man'.It is literary history combined with Donleavy's autobiography - growing up in the Bronx, education at Catholic schools, service in the US Navy, travels and adventures, and his current life as a proprietor of a landed estate in Ireland, where he breeds thoroughbred cattle. Trinity College,Dublin after WW2 was a mecca for adventurous Americans, who used the GI bill as a passport to higher education.Among them were able-bodied seaman second class J.P. 'Mike' Donleavy, fighter pilot George Roy Hill (now a celebrated Hollywood director) and naval yeoman Gainor Stephen Crist,a midwestern rara avis and prototype of the Ginger Man.Student life included degrees in debauchery; drunken brawls in Dublin pubs; comic adventures with Brendan Behan; eccentric Angl-Irish aristocrats; living on miraculous credit and in constant debt, with plenty of time for the seduction of nice Catholic girls. Donleavy, impecunious and newly married, began to write 'The Ginger Man' in a primitive cottage at Kilcoole. The book was written over a period of four years on two continents.Upon completion it was rejected by nearly thirty-five British and American publishers. The book was finally pubished in Paris by Maurice Girodias of the Olympia Press - as a work of pornography. Twenty-five years of bitter litigation between Donleavy and Girodias followed, with Donleavy emerging triumphant as the owner of Olympia and its copyrights, including 'The Ginger Man'.Since its traumatic birth,'The Ginger Man' has become a contemporary classic, translated into many languages with millions of copies sold throughout the world.See my book ID rja219 'THE GOOD SHIP VENUS: The Erotic Voyage of the OLYMPIA PRESS' by John de St Jorre, for a UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG.Very slightly rubbed edges dw/dj - shelf-wear. Fore-edges slightly aged.323pp,includes 9pp glossary, and map. An account of one man's remarkable experiences in Vietnam. The story of an average American sent to war by his country and whose sense of honour and responsibility came to extend beyond his immediate command to the people of the Vietnamese village,Tram Chin,he was ordered to defend. A portrait of a humane soldier and compassionate man and the precarious mental and physical balance he maintained through the horrors of war Donovan arrived in the Mekong Delta in April 1969,a raw idealistic first lieutenant fresh from Special Warfare School. He was assigned to an isolated four man team operating alone in a remote rural area of the Delta which was sent there to co-operate with village chiefs and local militia against the Vietcong. As CO of his unit, he led patrol and combat missions, and he vividly recreates the suspense of night ambushes and the high-pitched emotion of surprise attacks and man-to-man warfare in the swamps and jungles of the Delta. But he was also involved with the lives of the people of Tram Chin in a role beyond that of military advisor:he became caught up in Vietnamese culture, its local and national politics, and in friendships and families torn apart by war,and was ultimately inducted into a Vietnamese brotherhood - the honourary 'warrior kings'.A disclosure of the facsinating dimension of the war at village level. The first of 2 volumes of autobiography by Doonican, preceding 'Walking Tall' the sequel. 'It took me seventeen years to become an overnight success.' And so it did.For seventeen years Val Doonican had played and sung all over Ireland,Britain, and Germany,in clubs, dance halls, theatres,Army and Air Force bases - even cinemas; it took just one major television show from the London Palladium in 1964 to turn him into a star,an overnight success. Val Doonican, whose gentle voice and Irish humour have charmed us ever since, now tells the story of those seventeen years and of his childhood in Ireland before World War II. From a poor but close-knit family,Val paints a vivid, humorous and touching picture of his early years; the many incidents he recounts, filled with fun and drama, recall the world of childhood with particular charm. Compelled to leave school because of his father's sudden tragic death,Val's first job was in the works where his brothers were employed. He describes how,on his first day,the boss handed him a hammer 'with which I became remarkably adept, knocking inch nails into wooden boxes with such speed and accuracy that I would have made a worthy interlude on 'The Generation Game'. About a year later he left the job,and from then on his story was one of a long hard grind (alleviated by much good humour and camaraderie) towards his goal of becoming a musical entertainer. His discovery by impressario Val Parnell marked the turning point of Val's career as a highly successful and much-loved artist, whose television programmes and recordings have made him a household name. Val's story, which reflects in its every line the warmth, sincerity and humour of the man who wrote it,will bring as much pleasure to its readers as his unmistakable brand of entertainment has to his millions of fans over the years. Born in Waterford,Ireland in 1927,Val Doonican is now celebrating his 33rd year in the entertainment business (then 1980). He has to his credit: 9 hit records,6 best -selling LPs,3 Television Personality of the Year Awards,box-office records for thatres all over the country and an annual series of television shows on BBC 1,in addition to a number of special programmes. His main hobby is golf and he lives in Buckinghamshire with his wife, Lynn, and his two daughters,Sarah and Fiona - (again, then 1980). Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too! William Morris (1834-96) was a man of wide-ranging interests and enormous ability.Poet, writer, critic, conservationist and committed socialist,he was also an immensely creative and prolific designer who transformed the Victorian interior. As a designer,Morris is best known for his hugely popular wallpapers and fabrics, but he also designed and produced tapestries, carpets, rugs, embroideries, painted tiles, stained glass and fine printed books. Although his life was relatively short,he packed so much into his 62 years that on his death his doctor said that he died 'of being William Morris and doing more work than any ten men'. Helen Dore's book celebrates Morris's enormous range of achievement in the decorative arts against the background of his guiding principles, his collaboration with Edward Burne-Jones and other artists, and his often complicated private life. The illustrations,in colour and black and white, show a superb selection of examples from his varied oeuvre. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. Bright, crisp, glossy colour pictorial illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf- wear to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight and near pristine.Sharp-cornered,unblemished, publisher's original, dark blue cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,xii-xviipp+2- 269pp [paginated] includes acknowledgements,preface,chronology,17 chapters+epilogue,16pp assorted contemporary b/w illus in 2 blocks of 8pp apiece between pp78/9 and pp206/7 respectively, notes, biblio, index, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, dedication and contents+illus lists/ tables. The Jacobite story is more than the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie, his unlucky father and grndfather, and a handful of battles - the Boyne,Sheriffmuir,Preston, Prestonpans,Falkirk and Culloden. It is also one of history's longest-running spy sagas, the story of the dark underbelly of the Jacobite years,of spies and counter-spies,treachery and manipulation. The Jacobite Movement began with the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when James II of England and VII of Scotland fled and his daughter,Mary, and her husband,William of Orange, took over the thrones. It ended in 1788 with the death of Prince Charlie who ruled as 'King over the Water'. Although destroyed several times - in the defeats of the risings of 1715,1719 and 1745,and with the wrecking of several invasion attempts by France and Spain - in an intelligence war that drew in people from Sussex smugglers to Highland clansmen, the Jacobites proved remarkably able to haunt the Hanoverian government. Across Europe 'moles' dug for secrets at every court, and kings, ambassadors, soldiers, cardinals and royal mistresses all took part, from the great Duke of Marlborough to Madame de Pompadour and the devious King Louis XV.Even young Glengarry, heir to a highland chieftainship, sold himself to Prince Charlie's enenmies.Sir Robert Walpole proved a compulsive master mole-catcher, Baron Philip von Stosch combined art with spying, and the Irish adventurer, pimp and cardsharper,Dudley Bradstreet, claimed with justification to have wrecked Prince Char lie's 1745 rising. As for the prince,in his character lurked all the makings of a great spy and the defects of a bad one.He was a master of disguise and intrigue, which fooled his enemies, yet his arrogance and impetuosity contributed greatly to the Jacobites' eventual defeat in the espionage war.In the final analysis all the battles won and lost during the Jacobite century do not account for the failure of the Stuarts to be restored to the kingdoms they lost at the Glorious Revolution: ultimate defeat lay in their failure to win the intelligence war. 'Jacobite Spy Wars',the new book by the author of the widely acclaimed 'Flora MacDonald:the Most Loyal Rebel',tells the story of the spy wars on and off the battlefield during the hundred years of the Jacobite's fight for power.Told with vigour and vividly recreating the atmosphere of those times,it will appeal to anyone interested in European history. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age.It really is an exceptional example for its cleanliness and brightness. An entertaining and informative study of thirteen of Britain's great stately homes and the scandals, predominately sexual, which the owners and their families have been involved in from the sixteenth century to the present day. It details some of the most notorious scandals to have engulfed the British royal family and aristocracy and captures not only the events and their era,but also the essence of some of the world's greatest and most beautiful private dwellings. From the Hampton Court of Henry VIII to the modern scandals that saw the present Lord Brocket jailed,'Stately Passions' gives centre stage to the British stately homes that have played witness to centuries of aristocratic indiscretion.Whether examining the 'Profumo Affair',the call girl scandal at Cliveden, the home of Viscount Astor, that eventually brought down a government,or the affairs of the lesbian Vita Sackville-West and her bisexual husband, Harold Nicolson,at Sissinghurst Castle,or considering the goings on at Fort Belvedere, the Surrey bolthole where the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII,conducted his affair with the American divorcee Wallis Simpson that eventually led to his abdication, 'Stately Passions' provides a fascinating insight into the lives, loves and morals, dubious though they may be,of some notorious denizens of the aristocratic world. An account of an adventurous year in the Antarctic. The author was Australian observer in Adelie Land with the Third French Antarctic Expedition and this is the year that this book describes. The expedition to which the author was attached had three teams of huskies which were in his care.He trained them and they trained him.The characters of the individual dogs are drawn so clearly - Boss, Bjorn, Fram, the leaders, Aspirin the clown, Ifaut the beautiful, Helen the little dark she-devil, and the others - that one comes to know them as well as one knows one's own dogs. When the time approaches for the expedition to leave and the dogs to be destroyed, the reader becomes as desperately anxious about their fate as were the Dovers and his companions. One of the objects of the expedition was to maintain the first all-the-year-round study of the life of those marvellous birds, the Emperor penguins. There is much about these birds, seals and other penguins in the book. There are also brilliant descriptions of the Antarctic scene and weather. There is at times tense excitement.Plenty of it.In particular, there is an almost epic account of a long journey across the sea ice in the appalling conditions of darkness and blizzard in midwinter. 'Sketches at Lord's' concentrates exclusively on the cricket lithographs of the Victorian scholar and artist,John Corbet Anderson. These drawings, although neither large in number nor the main focus of Anderson's life and work, hold a unique place in cricketing history. Drawn in the middle years of the 19thC, they depict the great names in the game immediately prior to the introduction of photography. This period,of great significance in art,was also one of considerable importance to cricket, for it was during the 1840s and 1850s that the summer game was transformed from one of local tradition and rivalry to one of national prestige and popularity - with attendant heroes to honour. Without Anderson's lithographs, our images and knowledge of both the cricket and cricketers of this period would be much the poorer. For John Arlott they represent 'the pinnacle of popular cricket art'. For the authors,Michael Down and Derek West, the illustrations have become the pieces of an historical puzzle. In over ten years of collaboration they have managed to put together a fascinating record of detail concerning the artist, his lithographs and the cricketers who form the subject of his art. 'Sketches at Lord's' - in fact a title first used by Anderson to describe an early series of his drawings - is the fruit of this interest. In turn the text looks at Anderson, the very essence of sober and industrious Victorian man, the illustrations, with details of publication dates and original sizes, and the cricketers, the band of contemporary players ranging from Martingell to Mynn and from Parr to Pilch. In addition 'Sketches at Lord's' contains important bakground information about the printers and publishers of the lithographs and a number of contemporary illustrations which relate to the subjects in Anderson's work. But pride of place must go to the fine reproductions of the fifty-odd lithographs which represent the pick of the cricketing art of John Corbet Anderson. UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. 8vo,192pp includes filmography+index,b/w photographs. Nicholson is one of Hollywood's biggest, and many would say, most important stars. Up to date (1983) he has made forty films, with no sign of a drop in either popularity or productivity. He began his long movie career playing variations on James Dean in the late fifties, before moving into the 'drug and rock music' films of the sixties.EASY RIDER was his turning point, while FIVE EASY PIECES confirmed him as a new star.Over the last decade he has appeared in a string of film classics such as CHINATOWN,ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO NEST and THE SHINING. Downing seeks out the reasons for NICHOLSON's success and the significance of his contribution, analysing the films and characters he has played against the backdrop of recent history. In the process, he draws a vivid picture of a changing HOLLYWOOD and of this man himself.Few stars have been willing to express their opinions on a wide range of subjects, from sex to politics, from the poetry of basketball,to the poetry of film. NICHOLSON has taken more risks than most in his career and life, and it makes him a more fascinating subject. By the time they put down a deposit of two hundred pounds for a house in Kilbarrack,Rory was working as a compositor at the Irish Independent.By the time the first of their four children was born he'd become a teacher,at the School of printing in Dublin.Kilbarrack began to change ('it isn't a rural place any more') and Ireland too.Through their eyes we see the intensely Catholic society of their youth being transformed into the vibrant, modern Ireland of today. Both Rory and Ita Doyle are marvellous talkers, with excellent memories,so combined with Roddy Doyle's legendary skill in illuminating ordinary experience,it makes for a book of tremendous warmth and humanity. Just moved into a new apartment, alone for the first time in years,Victor Forde goes every evening to Donnelly's pub for a pint,a slow one. One evening his drink is interrupted.A man in shorts and a pink shirt brings over his pint and sits down.He seems to know Victor's name and to remember him from school.Says his name is Fitzpatrick. Victor dislikes him on sight, dislikes too the memories that Fitzpatrick stirs up of five years being taught by the Christian Brothers. He prompts other memories too - of Rachel, his beautiful wife who became a celebrity, and of Victor's own small claim to fame,as the man who says the unsayable on the radio. But it's the memories of school, and of one particular Brother, that he cannot control and which eventually threaten to destroy his sanity. 'Smile' has all the features for which Roddy Doyle has become famous: the razor-sharp dialogue, the humour, the superb evocation of childhood - but this is a novel unlike any he has written before. When you finish the last page you will have been challenged to re-evaluate everything you think you remember so clearly. Book presents extremely well for it's age and period, and is an attractive, affordable example. Doyle's debut novel and Sherlock Holmes's debut too. As a doctor at Southsea (Hampshire) for eight years (1882-90) with some intervals as a ship's doctor,he supplemented his incomes by writing short stories, published anonymously in a variety of magazines.'A Study in Scarlet' (1887) was accepted by Ward Lock for £25 and published in 'Beeton's Christmas Annual'. The central character was Sherlock Holmes, based on one of Doyle's teachers,a Dr. Joseph Bell. The story aroused no particular interest in England but the editor of of the American 'Lippincott's Magazine' found it more promising and his representative in London commissioned more work. The result was 'The Sign of the Four',which appeared in 'Lippincott's magazine' in February 1890.In the same year it was published in London but as 'The Sign of Four'.Both novels are not among Doyle's best work - he preferred the historical novel - but his character,Sherlock Holmes, caught the imagination of the public and Newnes (UK) asked for Sherlock Holmes stories for his 'Strand Magazine. The first one appeared in July 1891. FINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn,no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,clean,glossy laminated, pictorial illustrated dw/dj; with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to top edge - no nicks or tears present. Top+fore-edges generally bright and clean, contents bright, tight and clean also. Black paper-covered bds with bright, crisp, stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip and clean, plain white eps.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,illustrated 1st edn,14-1116pp includes half-title+title pages, contents list, preface, introducing Sherlock Holmes, Pts 1-3 includes 52 stories in Pt 2,32 stories in Pt 3 - in chronological order as written, profuse b/w contemporary illustrations by original, contemporary assorted artists and 4pp blanks to rear. It is almost exactly a century (then, 1986) since Mr Sherlock Holmes first entered the imagination of Arthur Conan Doyle.Narrowly escaping the names of 'Sherrinford Holmes' and 'Sherrington Hope' recorded in his creator's notebooks, the gaunt, ascetic, ruthlessly logical pursuer of crime and mystery made his debut appearance in 'A Study in Scarlet', published in 1887.Three years later came 'The Sign of Four',and then in 1891,with 'The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' in the now famous Strand Magazine,Holmes began fully to enter the imagination of the people, first of London, then of the whole world. Here for the first time in one volume is every Sherlock Holmes story, including those first two, with every illustration from the pages of those published in The Strand. The dark and moody illustrations intensify the feeling and atmosphere of these amazing adventures, and to make the experience even more authentic, the Strand stories are reproduced in facsimile from the very pages of the original issues: over sixty fascinating tales, including the long stories of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' and 'The Valley of Fear'.There is one further difference from previous Sherlock Holmes collections: the stories are in chronological order,as they were written. The original collection 'His Last Bow' was mostly stories under the general heading of 'Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes', written 1908-1913.The story 'His Last Bow' was written in 1917,' after 'The Valley of Fear' (1914-15),but was later included with the 'Remininscences' and the whole collection rather confusingly called 'His Last Bow'.This has been remedied here, and the stories appear as they originally did in The Strand. Arthur Conan Doyle spent forty years of his life telling us of the adventures of his sharply witty and moody detective, and his lovably pedantic and faithful friend Dr. Watson.Conan Doyle died in 1930 at the age of 71.Holmes and Watson are ageless and seem to be destined to be immortal. This warm, funny novel is about friendship and family, about facing death and opting for life.It climaxes in one of the great passages in Roddy Doyle's fiction: four middle-aged men at Ireland's hottest rock festival watching Jimmy's son Marvin's band Moanin' at Midnight pretending to be Bulgarian and playing a song called 'I'm Going to Hell' that apparently hasn't been heard since 1932. . . 4th title in Jimmy Rabbitte series. Sidney Paget who illustrated the Adventures,Memoirs,Return, and The Hound of the Baskervilles, died in January 1908.So when Conan Doyle began yet again to write Sherlock Holmes stories later that year after a gap of nearly four years,The Strand Magazine had to look around for another source of pictorial images to accompany the vivid verbal ones which its star writer provided. The solution adopted was not to plump for one particular artist. Instead, the seven stories published between 1908 and 1917 and then collected in His Last Bow had seven different artists.'The Valley of Fear',appearing in the early months of the War,was a long story and needed a single artist - Frank Wiles. The Case Book stories of 1921 to 1927 were shared with two exceptions between Wiles and Howard K. Elcock. There was no question of a departure from the image of Holmes that Paget had created from the features of his brother Walter (who incidentally did the drawings for 'The Dying Detective').But within the convention of the masterly brow, inquisitorial nose and commanding jaw, there are some intriguing variations of gauntness. While Watson continues to wear stick-up collars and Holmes a turned-down collar with bow-tie tucked under, the deer-stalker only reappears at the last minute in 'Shoscombe Old Place'. It is often regretted that Sidney Paget did not live to illustrate these last nineteen short stories and 'The Valley of Fear',but it must also be acknowledged that his successors rose to the challenge both of his example and of the stories themselves. Uncommon edition/issue,with an intriguing piece of Sherlockiana ephemera. THE VALLEY OF FEAR.

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st thus.NFINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj. Pictorial, colour decorated, laminated boards, design repeated to dw/dj.Fore-edges slightly aged.8vo,189pp.9th and last volume in the Sherlock Holmes Collected edn, with an introduction by Len DEIGHTON. When this, the fourth and last of the long Sherlock Holmes stories, appeared in 1914, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle remarked lightly, 'I fancy this is my swan-song in fiction.' To all intents and purposes his days as a fiction writer were over, and he dedicated himself to the crusade for spiritualism that was to dominate his final years. Serialized in the Strand Magazine from September 1914 to April 1915,'The Valley of Fear' is the tale in which Holmes solves the mystery of a foul murder in a moated house in Sussex. In doing so,he uncovers an earlier and grimmer history of lawlessness and wholesale slaughter in a mining valley in the United States, and once again grapples with the criminal master-mind of Professor Moriarty. 'Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha',Roddy Doyle's last novel (then 1996),won the 1993 Booker Prize and went on to become a phenomenal international bestseller.'The Woman Who Walked Into Doors' is his finest achievement to date, the heart-rending story of a woman struggling to reclaim her dignity after a violent, abusive marriage and a worsening drink problem.Paula Spencer recalls her contented childhood, the audacity she learns as a teenager, the exhilaration of her romance with Charlo, and the marriage to him that left her powerless. Capturing both her vulnerability and her strength,Doyle gives Paula a voice that is real and unforgettable. Lean and sexy, funny and poignant,'The Woman Who Walked Into Doors',shows, yet again, that Roddy Doyle has an unparalleled gift for transforming ordinary life into great literature. It really is an exceptional, exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of detracting faults.                                The story surrounds a school that is well liked by its students notably because of its many eccentric teachers. However, the students must make a good grade on a standardized test (which turns out in the end to be a revising test on multiple subjects they regularly learn) lest they be sent to an adjacent school, which requires uniforms to be worn and is incredibly dull.                           Jack Prelutsky (b. September 8,1940) is an American writer of children's poetry, who has published over 50 poetry collections. He served as the first U.S. Children's Poet Laureate (now called the Young People's Poet Laureate) from 2006–08 when the Poetry Foundation established the award.                                       Lane Smith  (b. August 25,1959) is an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He is the Kate Greenaway medallist (2017 - for 'There Is a Tribe of Kids) known for his eclectic visuals and subject matter, both humorous and earnest, such as the contemplative 'Grandpa Green',which received a Cldecott Honour in 2012, and the outlandish'Stinky Cheese Man',which received a Caldecott Honour in 1992.  He studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, graduated from Art Center in 1983 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration and moved to New York City. There he freelanced, illustrating for various publications, including TIME, The New York Times, Newsweek, Rolling  Stone, Sesame Street Magazine and others. He has illustrated Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach (US,Random House,1996 edn) - illustrations also appeared in 'The Roald Dahl Treasury',1997 Hardback book - see my book ID rja857619 and rja24767 (both UK,CAPE, 1997,HB+dw/dj,1st edns, and won an award in 1998 – No. 1 Publishers Weekly bestseller,Dr. Seuss' Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! with  Jack Prelutsky (US,Random House, 1998). A children's book credited to Dr. Seuss "with some help from writer Jack Prelutsky and Lane Smith". The book is based on verses and sketches created by Seuss before his death in 1991,and was expanded to book length and completed by writer Prelutsky and illustrator Smith for publication in 1998.                             Renowned children's poet Jack Prelutsky and award-winning illustrator Lane Smith were called to action by Schulman to pull these sketches into a complete story that would make Dr. Seuss fruffulous with glee. Prelutsky's delicious verse is uncannily Seussian, and it is inexplicably sensational when exploring the Diffendoofer School to discover good old Horton, a platter of green eggs and ham, and a few Whos from Who-ville scattered across the surreal and fascinating landscape of Smith's artwork. Lane and Prelutsky have gone above and beyond the call of duty, maintaining the characters and themes Geisel was just beginning to develop, but enhancing them with their own delightful stylistic stamps.                                Above all, this incredible book is an ode to unorthodox, unusually creative teachers, and the innovative thinking they encourage in young minds. (Miss Twining, for example, teaches "how to tell chrysanthemums from miniature poodles.") It is a noble theme, and one that Geisel surely had in mind when he concocted these preliminary sketches. Both new Dr. Seuss aficionados and those who remember The Cat in the Hat's 1957 debut will cherish this book for its message, artwork, and poetry, and most of all,as a tribute to the man who inspired thousands of readers. With novels such as 'The Millstone', 'Jerusalem the Golden' and 'The Needle's Eye',Magaret Drabble has firmly established her position as a writer in the forefront of British novelists today. With 'The Ice Age',she has written what many consider her finest work to date (then 1977),a book that is a triumph of incisive but humane irony. Anthony Keating,a rebel against his liberal upbringing, has switched from producing 'social conscious' programmes on television - to property speculation.A spell of enforced idleness at his seventeenth-century North Yorkshire moors home causes him to reappraise the direction in which he is heading. The sour winds of the seventies have blown out some of the spirit of ebullient enterprise of the decade before, and Anthony himself feels threatened from all sides. Alison Murray, the woman that Anthony Keating loves,is suffering the pangs of middle age.Emerging from her marriage to an egocentric actor, and having given up a promising career in acting herself,Alison finds herself torn between the needs of her two daughters: Jane,in prison behind the Iron Curtain, and Molly, whose cerebral palsy necessitates constant care and security. Through Anthony and Alison we are introduced to their families and friends: to Anthony's former wife, the chaotic Babs; to Len Wincobank,Anthony's idol in the whiz-kid property speculation line - now doing time in Scratby Open Prison; to Maureen,Len's cheerful and down-to-earth girlfriend; to Kitty Friedmann, survivor of a restaurant bombing; to Linton Hancox, brilliant classics scholar and poet of talent - twenty years ago. As the events of the novel unfold,Anthony Keating's own searching for more meaning in his life takes a surprising turn when he discovers,by sheer chance, exactly the modus vivendi that can give piquancy to his middle-age angst. In this brilliant tragi-comedy,Margaret Drabble examines the complex spectacle of Britain struggling through the early nineteen seventies. An exceptional copy,in a particularly high grade - the best I've ever handled.
